THE THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER

MAY 1, 2022

Welcome!

JOIN US ON SUNDAY

Dear Friends, As we continue through this Easter Season, I hope you’re taking advantage of the many supportive offerings we have at Saint Michael. Throughout the Easter Season, “Come, Follow Me” is the theme of our Easter podcast series, daily meditations led by the Saint Michael clergy, as well as Sunday and midweek classes for all ages. Today we continue our 75th Anniversary celebration and welcome the Rt. Rev. Dean Wolfe back to Saint Michael. Dean will be our guest preacher at 9 and 11 a.m. in the Church and will lead the adult forum in the Saint Michael Chapel at 10 a.m. The celebration continues next Sunday, May 8, as we welcome back the Rev. Chip Edens and the Rev. Dr. Brenda Sol as our guest preacher and celebrant, respectively. We will also host Mothers & Mimosas, a festive Mother’s Day reception, on May 8 at 9:45 a.m. in the Garden Cloister. Come celebrate with your mother or the mother in your life! Finally, mark your calendars for the first Combined Choirs Concert at Saint Michael in a generation! This gala choral concert will feature the combined choirs of Saint Michael and include the final premiere of a 75th anniversary commission: Psalm 100 (Jubilate Deo) written for the combined Cherubs, Choristers, and Choir by internationally renowned composer Cecilia McDowall. Join us on Sunday, May 15 at 4 p.m. in the Church.

The Te Deum is a hymn of thanksgiving that was written in the 4th century. It is prescribed for use on any major feast day, and is used here to celebrate the most festive of all liturgical seasons. Buxtehude’s organ solo setting of the Te Deum was originally intended to be played in alternation with a choir from one verse to the next. The final verse is set as a chorale fantasia, which means that it treats each phrase of the chant individually with contrasting motives and sounds.

The Lesson

Acts 9:1-6

Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest and asked him for letters to the synagogues at Damascus, so that if he found any who belonged to the Way, men or

women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem. Now as he was going along and approaching Damascus, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him. He fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?” He asked, “Who are you, Lord?” The reply came, “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. But get up and enter the city, and you will be told what you are to do.” Lector The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. Psalm 30:1-6, 12-13

Henry Walford Davies

Chanted by the Choir

I will exalt you, O LORD, because you have lifted me up * and have not let my enemies triumph over me . O LORD my God, I cried out to you, * and you restored me to health . You brought me up, O LORD, from the dead; * you restored my life as I was going down to the grave . Sing to the LORD, you servants of his; * give thanks for the remembrance of his holiness . For his wrath endures but the twinkling of an eye, * his favor for a lifetime . Weeping may spend the night, * but joy comes in the morning . You have turned my wailing into dancing; * you have put off my sack-cloth and clothed me with joy . Therefore my heart sings to you without ceasing; * O LORD my God, I will give you thanks for ever. John 21:1-19 The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Jesus showed himself again to the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias; and he showed himself in this way. Gathered there together were Simon Peter, Thomas called the Twin, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples. Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We will go with you.” They went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing. Just after daybreak, Jesus stood on the beach; but the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to them, “Children, you have no fish, have you?” They answered him, “No.” He said to them, “Cast the net to the right side of the boat, and you will find some.” So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in because there were so many fish. That disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on some clothes, for he was naked, and jumped into the sea. But the other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish, for they were not far from the land, only about a hundred yards off. When they had gone ashore, they saw a charcoal fire there, with fish on it, and bread. Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish that you have just caught.” So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, a hundred fifty-three of them; and though there were so many, the net was not torn. Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” Now

none of the disciples dared to ask him, “Who are you?” because they knew it was the Lord. Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. This was now the third time that Jesus appeared to the disciples after he was raised from the dead. When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my lambs.” A second time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Tend my sheep.” He said to him the third time, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” Peter felt hurt because he said to him the third time, “Do you love me?” And he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep. Very truly, I tell you, when you were younger, you used to fasten your own belt and to go wherever you wished. But when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will fasten a belt around you and take you where you do not wish to go.” (He said this to indicate the kind of death by which he would glorify God.) After this he said to him, “Follow me.” Gospeler People

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ.

The Sermon

The Right Reverend Dean E. Wolfe

The Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;

Then shall the Rector and Choristers say the Royal School of Music Choristers Prayer together. The Rector and the Director of Music congratulate the new chorister. “I will sing” is a movement from Mendelssohn’s oratorio St. Paul, a major work for choir, orchestra, and soloists which outlines the life of St. Paul. The movement we hear today is placed near the beginning of the second half of St. Paul, which focuses on the mission of Paul and Barnabas. The words “mercy” and “faithfulness” are, perhaps appropriately, regularly highlighted by the composer in the vocal line.

Sir William H. Harris lived and worked through the first three quarters of the twentieth century. He held several prominent positions, including on the faculty of the Royal College of Music and as organist at St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle. Harris’s music is harmonically conservative in comparison to that of many of his peers in the 20th century, and quickly found a place in the canon of Anglican repertoire. This morning’s anthem presents a meditation on a text originally written for All Saints’ Day. It features soaring melodies, luscious harmonic shifts, and simple but profound text setting.

The Great Thanksgiving: Eucharistic Prayer B Celebrant People Celebrant People Celebrant People

All baptized persons of any age regardless of their denomination and tradition are welcome to share in the banquet of the Lord’s Supper.

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise.

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: Sanctus and Benedictus: Hymn S 128

William Mathias

We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.

Here a Proper Preface is sung or said on all Sundays, and on other occasions as appointed.

At the following words concerning the bread, the Celebrant is to hold it, or lay a hand upon it; and at the words concerning the cup, to hold or place a hand upon the cup and any other vessel containing wine to be consecrated.

On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Therefore, according to his command, O Father,

Celebrant and People

The Celebrant continues

We remember his death, We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory; And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with Saint Michael all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN. And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Felix Mendelssohn

Mendelssohn’s organ sonatas represent a significant rebirth for the organ in both continental Europe and England. Mendelssohn was a child prodigy and one of the great virtuosos of his day. He made his name on the continent as a pianist and conductor and in England as an organist, and frequently drew packed houses to his concerts on tour. When he published his sonatas simultaneously with four publishing houses in England, Germany, Italy, and France, these works instantly joined the standard canon of organ repertoire.
