IS THAT YOUR BROTHER?

Alan: Who’s that, Gran? Is that you? Granny: No, that isn’t me, it’s your auntie Annie. And next to her, that’s our brother, your uncle Ben. Alan: Is this you then? Granny: Yes it is. I was only six or seven. And that’s my dad. Alan: Ha! Ha! Look at him! I like his hat. Was that your boat? Granny: Mm, I think so. But it had a big hole in it! And this was my bike – the little green one. Alan: Is that your mum and dad? I like their car!

WHY DID THEY LEAVE HOME?

From 1820 to 1900 about 1.3 million people left Sweden. Most of them went to America and most of them loved their home, so why did they leave? Let’s listen to one of them. My name’s Hans Persson. When I was a young man I had a small farm in Småland. I lived there with my wife and our children. Life was never easy but we were OK, I guess. But in 1866 and 1867 the weather was very bad and our crops didn’t grow. After two winters like that, I knew that we had to go. We loved our home and we didn’t want to leave, but we had no choice. People said life was better in America. So in 1868 we sold our land and started the long, long journey. We travelled first by boat to Grimsby in England, then by train to Liverpool and finally by ship to America. The ship was small and crowded and we took our own food with us. We were at sea for more than two weeks. And life was better in America. It was hard work but we had a new home and enough to eat. Our children grew up and soon learned English. It was easy for them but harder for us. We got a better life but we always missed Sweden. 20

Grammar to Go är skriven på naturlig vardagsengelska.
