It was Harvey who came up with the idea to go to the beach. He was always up to something.

Harvey was not alone. Moon and Spencer were with him, of course. They were always together. “Hey, Foster, wanna come?” I couldn’t really say no. If I did, Harvey would call me a sissy for weeks. “Yes, all right. Why not?” We all took the number 62 bus down to the beach. As we got off everybody started running towards the water. Spencer got there last, so Harvey filled a shoe with pebbles, then emptied it all over Spencer with a grin. Spencer’s sunglasses broke – but that was part of the game, Harvey’s game.

We all ran into the water which was still nice and warm. We swam and dived to see if we could pick up some interesting objects from the bottom. Spencer soon found an old lipstick and a toothbrush. Moon showed us a black hairband which he put on. It had red dots on it. “Look at pretty me!”
I dived at least twenty times till I spotted something glittering under a stone. A silver bracelet! No one would beat that! “Hey, guys, look at this.” I called Moon who was closest to me. “Amazing!” he said. “Harvey, look at this.” “Harvey!” “Where’s Harvey?” “Oh, I guess he’s just making fun of us.” Thirty seconds. Still no Harvey. “Harvey, you idiot, where are you?” We dived to look around. It was Moon who found him. He pointed at a dark shadow under the surface near a rock about fifteen metres away. It was Harvey. We swam up to him. He wasn’t moving so Moon and I grabbed him by the arms and pulled him onto the beach. He looked awful. And Spencer just stood there, looking scared.

This was it! I had learnt first aid at school so I threw myself down on my knees and bent Harvey’s head backwards. Then I started giving him ‘the kiss of life’. TWENTY-FIVE 25

Then do it all over again: deep breaths at your normal rate. Keep on working. You must work hard till he can breathe on his own. If it doesn’t work, then something may be blocking his throat. Try to clear it and try again. Never give up!

The republic of India is a huge country and there is really nothing you could call typically Indian. Let’s learn about how people live and about the various climate zones, the sacred animals, the spicy food and Bollywood.

India is seven times as big as Sweden, and its population is growing very quickly. In the big cities people live a modern life but it is more traditional in the countryside. About one third of the population doesn’t earn enough money to feed their families. New Delhi, the capital of India, is one of the most polluted cities in the world. In the north of India there are high mountains and it is rather cold while it is very hot and humid in the south. When the heavy rains come with the monsoon, many people are very happy because they need water, while in some areas others have big problems with floods. To the left: Holi, the Colour Festival. Most people in India are Hindus (about 80%). To a Hindu the cow is a sacred animal and mustn’t be harmed in any way. Many other animals are also sacred. There is a temple called the Karni Mata Temple where they treat rats as sacred animals. There are more than 20,000 rats there and when people visit the temple they even feed them. As most Hindus don’t eat meat, there are many vegetarians in India. The food is very spicy and often served with rice, bread and yoghurt. They use a lot of different spices and always make their own mixture for each dish. 70% of all the world’s spices come from India.
In Mumbai they make about 1,000 films every year. They are called Bollywood films and are usually musicals. Many of the films are romantic love stories with songs, music and dancing.

Lord Ganesha is a well known god in India. There are many stories about how he got his elephant head. This is one of them.

32 THIRTY-TWO
One day when the goddess Parvati was going to take a bath, she wanted someone to be her guard. She had no one to ask so she created a young boy from dirt and dust from her own body. She gave life to him by sprinkling water from the River Ganges. She called her son Ganesha and told him to stop everyone who tried to enter. When Lord Shiva, Parvati’s husband, came back from a long journey he was surprised to find a little boy outside the entrance to his wife’s bath. When he wanted to enter, the boy tried to stop him. “Who are you? Why are you blocking my path?” Lord Shiva asked. “No one is allowed to enter,” Ganesha replied. Lord Shiva was confused and shouted: “I have the right to enter. Go away!” But Ganesha just stood there and didn’t move. Lord Shiva got furious because people always obeyed him. So Lord Shiva cut off the boy’s head and threw it away. When Parvati returned from her bath, she found her son lying dead. She was filled with sorrow and anger. And when Lord Shiva understood that he had killed his own son, he sent out his soldiers to bring the head of the first creature they happened to see. It was an elephant. They cut off its head and took it to Lord Shiva. He fixed the head onto Ganesha and then he breathed life into him. Parvati was very pleased when she saw her son alive again. Today you will find the elephant-headed god, Lord Ganesha, at the entrance of all temples in India. Ganesha is the god of wisdom and also the god of all school children.
