President’s Letter

Espie Santiago Welcome to the 2021 MPACE Conference in Disneyland. After two years of physical separation, I’m grateful that we can meet in person at the “Happiest Place on Earth.” This year’s conference theme, How Far We’ll Go Together, exemplifies the challenging times we’ve been living through and the adversities we continue to overcome. From uncertainty, fear, and loss to perseverance, opportunities, and wins, MPACE is always here to support you, and together, there’s no limit to what’s possible! Our awesome conference planning committee is thrilled to bring you three days of activities and sessions, providing you with time to connect and reflect with colleagues. Among the many events planned, we are excited to bring you three amazing keynote speakers. We will officially kick off the conference with Clark Jones, Vice President of Disneyland Resort Finance, Revenue Planning & Special Events. You’ll also hear from Dr. Sumun Pendakur, whose work and research focuses on helping campuses and corporations build capacity for social justice and racial equity. Lastly, you won’t want to miss Dr. Michele Harper, emergency room physician and the author of The Beauty in Breaking, a memoir of service, transformation, and self-healing. In addition, we have multiple breakout sessions, roundtables, and exhibitors aimed to inspire you. During your down time, some of you may enjoy exploring Downtown Disney for some shopping and yummy treats - I personally enjoy Salt & Straw for ice cream and Sprinkles for cupcakes. Others may enjoy a round of bowling at Splitsville - I love the retro vibe there! If you are in the mood for some fun ambiance and delicious cocktails, stop into Trader Sam’s Enchanted Tiki Bar - it’s a must while at the Disneyland Hotel! On the evening of December 9, you’ve been offered the opportunity to attend Disney’s Merriest Nites, a special holiday event where you can enjoy after-hours admission to Disneyland Park with limited capacity, including access to attractions and Disney entertainment options. If you opt not to attend, there will be “dine-abouts” for you to join other attendees at restaurants in Downtown Disney. Either way, you’ll have the chance to network and deepen your connections with colleagues and make new friends! I attended my first MPACE Conference in 2003, and I never imagined it would have such a profound impact on my career. Several things made an impression on me, including the quality of the speakers and workshops. Most of all, I could not believe how inclusive and friendly everyone was and how eager they were to support our profession. I knew right away that I wanted to increase my involvement with the MPACE community. My hope is that our conference has this same impact for you as it did for me many years ago. Whether this is your first conference or your eighteenth, please explore many of the volunteer opportunities and connect with MPACE members who have done the same. As a volunteer association, you help shape the future of MPACE. Please be sure to say hello to me as you will find, “You’ve Got a Friend in Me.” ESPIE SANTIAGO MPACE President 2021-2022 9

Dear MPACE Colleagues: Welcome to The Disneyland Hotel & the 2021 MPACE Conference How Far We’ll Go Together: Reimagining the Future! We are extremely honored and thrilled to engage in this year’s conference experience with each and every one of you. What is even more special is bringing the MPACE community back together in person. We have been hard at work all year long with our fabulous conference committees to plan for this exciting time at Disneyland. All of our amazing conference volunteers have worked extremely hard to ensure everyone has an exciting time filled with networking, best-practice sharing, leadership development, fun, Disney magic, and, most importantly, BEING TOGETHER. Our main goal for this conference is that you reconnect with colleagues and gain innovative ideas shared throughout the conference from a diverse range of presenters and keynote speakers that will help us all to reimagine the future of career services and talent acquisition. In addition to the work of our awesome conference planning committees, we want to thank the MPACE Board and our association management group, Smith Moore & Associates, for their guidance and support. We definitely could not have made this all possible without the generous contributions of our sponsors and business partners in the exhibit hall. We are extremely grateful for the continued and new partnerships with MPACE. And, as we all know, what makes MPACE so special is the people…all of you. We thank you for taking time away from work and home to be present, to share, to learn and grow, and to reimagine work that is forever changed. In the words of the great Walt Disney, “We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things, because we’re curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.” Cheers to three days filled with a little magic, a lot of fun, and togetherness! DR. MICHELE HARPER FRIDAY, DECEMBER 10 PRESENTING VIRTUALLY | 9:00 AM – 10:00 AM Dr. Michele Harper is an emergency room physician and the author of The Beauty in Breaking, a memoir of service, transformation, and self-healing. In her talks, Dr. Harper speaks on how the policies and systemic racism in healthcare have allowed the most vulnerable members of society to fall through the cracks, and the importance of making peace with the past while drawing support from the present. In each anecdote, she shines a light on the disenfranchisement of patients and providers alike due to poverty, profiling, sexism, and stigmas. Speaking with honesty and compassion, Dr. Harper reflects on her journey from navigating a complicated family in Washington D.C. to attending Harvard, where she pursued emergency medicine and met her husband. They stayed together through medical school— until two months before she was scheduled to join the staff of a Philadelphia hospital, when he told her he couldn’t move with her. Her marriage at an end, Dr. Harper began a new career in a new city, as a newly single woman. Longlisted for the 2021 Andrew Carnegie Medals for Excellence in Nonfiction, The Beauty in Breaking tells how she learned to bring insight and empathy into the emergency room, and how recognizing and mending physical, emotional, and psychological breaks are all crucial parts of the healing process. A graduate of Harvard University and the Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University, Dr. Harper has worked for over a decade in various hospitals, including being the chief resident at Lincoln Hospital in the South Bronx and an attending physician in the emergency department at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Philadelphia. She currently resides in Philadelphia. For more information on this Speaker, please visit www.prhspeakers.com. 2021 MPACE Annual Conference
