MDF is an invite-only gathering of the energy storage ecosystem, including regulators, utilities, and CESA members, focused on how energy storage will support California’s decarbonization and grid reliability goals. 100+ CESA industry leaders will be gathering in-person for business networking opportunities and an insightful, educational program on safety permitting, long-duration energy storage, integrated resource planning, resource adequacy, distributed storage, interconnection, and more.

The Role of Long-Duration Energy Storage in the Grid of the Future Panelists will discuss the latest research on LDES technologies, state and federal support of LDES, and industry efforts to educate policymakers in the US and abroad about the benefits LDES can provide as power supplies are decarbonized. Experts will weigh in on critical materials required to grow LDES domestic supply chains. The panel will deliver perspective on likely technological development scenarios and help the audience understand the need for market evolution based on the expected LDES performance requirements.

Planning to Meet California’s Clean Energy and Reliability Goals California will need thousands of MW of storage capacity in the next two decades to operate a low-carbon grid reliably. This panel will discuss the quantities and types of storage recent research indicates will be needed, the CPUC’s vision for ensuring that load-serving entities are on track to procure clean energy and storage at a sufficient pace, and the changing resource requirements and counting rules that load-serving entities are adapting to.

Speaker Bios
Drew Bohan is the executive director of the California Energy Commission. The Energy Commission is leading the state to a 100 percent clean energy future. He has served Californians for more than 15 years. His public service includes leadership roles with the Energy Commission, California Environmental Protection Agency, the Ocean Protection Council, and the California Department of Conservation.
He served as the executive director of Santa Barbara Channelkeeper, chief counsel to the House of Delegates in the Republic of Palau, and a litigation attorney at Heller Ehrman in San Francisco.

Severin Borenstein is E.T. Grether Professor of Business Administration and Public Policy at the Haas School of Business and faculty director of the Energy Institute at Haas. He is also Director emeritus of the University of California Energy Institute (1994-2014). He received his AB from UC Berkeley and PhD in Economics from MIT. His research focuses on business competition, strategy, and regulation. He has published extensively on the airline industry, the oil and gasoline industries, and electricity markets. His current research projects include the economics of renewable energy, economic policies for reducing greenhouse gases, and alternative models of retail electricity pricing. Borenstein is also a research associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research in Cambridge, MA. He served on the Board of Governors of the California Power Exchange from 1997 to 2003. During 1999-2000, he was a member of the California Attorney General’s Gasoline Price Task Force. In 2010-11, Borenstein was a member of U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood’s Future of Aviation Advisory Committee. In 2012-13, he served on the Emissions Market Assessment Committee, which advised the California Air Resources Board on the operation of California’s Cap and Trade market for greenhouse gases. In 2014, he was appointed to the California Energy Commission’s Petroleum Market Advisory Committee, which he chaired from 2015 until the Committee was dissolved in 2017. Since 2015, he has served on the Advisory Council of the Bay Area Air Quality Management District. In 2019, he was appointed to the Governing Board of the California Independent System Operator.
Christine Hironaka was appointed Deputy Cabinet Secretary in 2019 by Governor Gavin Newsom. Hironaka has most recently served as Deputy Secretary for Legislative Affairs at the California Environmental Protection Agency (CalEPA). Prior to joining CalEPA, Christine served as Assistant Director for Policy Development at the California Department of Resources, Recycling and Recovery (CalRecycle), where she previously served as Deputy Director for Legislative Affairs. She also served as a legislative assistant in the Office of State Senator Mark Leno, and as a capital fellow in the Office of State Senator Denise Moreno Ducheny. Nyla Khan, Systems and Materials Engineer, Energy Storage Division, Office of Electricity, DOE Grant Mack, Deputy Legislative Secretary Becky Robinson is a Principal Economist at the California ISO, where she focuses on market policy and performance. Prior to joining the ISO, Becky had roles at Vistra Corp and at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, including as an advisor to Commissioner Cheryl LaFleur.
