The Ranamok Glass Prize 2012 Please handle with care Styrofoam or bubblewrap Finding the right words On our 18th year, it’s been another outstanding effort. My thanks and appreciation to our: Board... Maureen, Jacqui, Deirdre and Damien, Judges… Anne, Gill and Brian, Management... Elizabeth, Polina, Peta and James, Underwriters and Sponsors. Handled with care. Andy Plummer

Once again, we are pleased to see the escalating numbers of artists applying to the Ranamok Glass Prize. The breadth of applicants who are at various stages of their careers is truly reflected in this current choice of works. It is so important that such a Prize exists which gives the opportunity for all artists, from students to established artists, to share the same exhibition platform. This generates a multiplicity of ideas from different levels of understanding, which show the diversity of this exciting medium of glass. Each year, audiences grow as they visit this firmly established annual event. It has served to educate the broader public at a national level and highlight the significance of Australian and New Zealand contemporary glass and the role it has played in the international arena. Sincere thanks to all of those who have supported and contributed towards the Prize in so many different ways. This is most appreciated as it is so valuable for the Prize’s on-going success. Maureen Cahill Glass Artists’ Gallery Co-founder, Ranamok

Introduction I was delighted to accept the invitation to be a judge for the Ranamok Glass Prize 2012. The judges’ rendezvous was ‘The Shed’ located in the hard-working backstreets of Brookvale between Alsupply’s aluminium and Wardley’s aquariums. In reality this ‘shed’ is an architect-designed, purpose-built studio office, clad in reflective corrugated metal with large glass windows open to the sky and to an integrated landscape of grasses and sweet frangipani. Amid the activity of the street this shed was a haven. And, it is also embodied with memory and story. In a previous life it was a house of pleasure or ill-repute as some neighbours say. But now as the home of the Ranamok Glass Prize it is layered with many sensory associations of material and memory. The morning unfolded with a dialogue about contemporary glass. My fellow judges were Gillian Minervini, Creative Director/Producer Events, City of Sydney; Brian Parkes, Chief Executive Officer, JamFactory, Adelaide and Andy Plummer, Co-founder, Ranamok. Now how does one really describe Andy Plummer? He is a man of many parts – with extraordinary business acumen, acute collector’s eye, enthusiastic maker, generous benefactor and co-founder and backbone of the Ranamok Glass Prize. His co-founder is the acclaimed and indomitable glass artist and gallerist Maureen Cahill. This dynamic partnership has created a unique event in Australia’s cultural calendar. How does one judge a glass prize called ‘Ranamok’? It seems such a strange and sweet irony – I mean the word ‘ranamok’ – a highly emotive Malay word conjuring up all manner of mayhem and then apply it to the art of glass – that most fragile and defiant yet reflective and compliant medium – such a wonderful fusion and frisson. Is this what we judges were being asked to reflect on – to take glass art beyond some frozen boundary and let it run-a-muck?

6

No, our judging criteria was crystal clear – to encourage creativity, skill and innovation in contemporary glass. Prizes have shaped the Australian art scene, revealing powerful national sentiments. Democratic, encouraging artistic freedom and yet shaped by a clear vision acknowledging excellence in a particular field and usually judged by peers. Our judging ‘conversation’ started about reconciling the criteria for this prize with how the individual artists expressed themselves in their work. Fellow judges for the Ranamok Glass Prize 2012 brought such knowingness and commitment to the process and I acknowledge their contribution. The judging process was stimulating, the exchange was open and decisions were unanimous. As we viewed the digital imaging of the works we were profoundly sensitised by the quality of the image that had been so beautifully lit, often back lit against a neutral, grey background. Two images were supplied for us to make our decision. Blindly seductive images, rendered by the photographer’s light to capture a wide shot and a detail of the work. We struggled with the sense of scale and the physicality of the work and wondered what the material work was like. This is the art experience we all crave. There was much discussion about the ‘edges’ of the work – what the artist was exploring conceptually and how the work was made. Was this work exceptional within the artist’s practice? And then the thorny issue of the power of the image over the power of the work. What did the work feel like, how was it made, what was the artist dealing with and how did the use of the glass convey meaning? The ambiguity was in the physicality of the work – how did it exist in space without the photographer’s seductive light? Out of the 101 entries we sought to create an exhibition that reflected the range of interests artists were exploring

and their diverse production. But the pervading criteria for selection was the quality of the individual work and the way the artist had pushed boundaries – all types of boundaries – in the piece submitted. Six artists have explored the intimacies and ‘feeling’ of textile in glass. Denise Pepper has created an ethereal lace collar, Emma Varga a shimmering pâte de verre tapestry and Te RŌngŌ Kirkwood a potent protective cloak. Jennifer Kemarre Martiniello’s glass dilibags play on the rhythmic weaving in traditional baskets. Paddy Robinson knits and slumps fibreglass and Gabrielle Adamik stitches miniature houses. Four artists demonstrate exceptional botanic-inspired works. Mandy Eilbeck entranced us with her Banksia and stick arrangement, Evelyn Dunstan and Sue Hawker with their sublime budding vessels and Alasdair Gordon with his beautifully resolved traditional vase – this year engraved with kangaroo paws. Holly Grace and Nikki Main use glass to explore environmental themes – from the vast and fragile alpine landscape to the flood ravaged Birdsville lakes. Other artists have concentrated on the form, colour and fragility of glass itself. Lisa Cahill hangs large, coloured sheets, Tim Shaw plays with seductive incalmo glass and Christine Cathie twists a minimalist lead crystal form. Julie Reimer, Dale Roberts and Anne Sorensen have created beautiful works with a highly resolved mastery of material, colour and form. We enjoyed seeing the domestic reworked. There is an enigmatic silence in the two vessels by KuBHo Collaboration and a functional simplicity in David Yule’s glasses. We also delighted in the witty statements with glass in Estelle Dean’s fortune cookies, Tom Moore’s hand made ‘bear’ multiples and Nick Wirdnam’s tray of classy delights.

Annette Blair and Kate Baker use figurative images in their works but in very different ways. Roslyn Harris has two works selected this year, both exploring the edges of the human condition – one a fragmented text work and the other a tectonic play of fused and sandblasted plates. Kristin McFarlane plays with museum typologies with glass words. Bethany Wheeler plays conceptually with tools of trade while Tyler Rock stretches boundaries with blown glass, water, light and sound. From a remarkable field of 101 works, 30 were short listed from 29 artists including a collaborative work by two artists. Four artists are from New Zealand and 25 from Australia. We look forward to seeing the works in Canberra and making the final decision. The Ranamok Glass Prize acknowledges innovation, skill and creativity and is eagerly sought by a hugely talented field of artists. The exhibition reaches a broad audience with the extensive Australian tour and internationally with this publication. I thank fellow judges Gillian Minervini, Brian Parkes and Andy Plummer for their generous contribution and the ever efficient, hard working Ranamok team. If ever there is a team that does not run-a-muck it is Elizabeth MacDougall, Polina Gavria and James Graham. We hope the works selected for Ranamok 2012 will give you the same sense of wonder and enchantment that they gave us. Anne Flanagan Deputy Director Art Gallery of New South Wales

As the dreams grow, the houses multiply.

25 H x 11 W x 11 D cm

Kate Baker Untitled Kiln formed glass 58 H x 39 W x 7 D cm

10

Sydney, New South Wales, Australia

The spaces we inhabit, both internal and external, define us. These temporal places are encoded with the secrets of our memories and our histories. Language, culture, nature and technology merge to create our reality within a living, breathing place.

Annette Blair Still Life #1 Blown glass and glass enamel 33 H x 38 W x 16 D cm

Queanbeyan, New South Wales, Australia

I can feel the warmth of the sun on that day and remember the smell of the roses that he nurtured. Preserved in glass, the humble watering can represents my interest in utilitarian objects and their incredible power to evoke such vivid nostalgia.

Photographer: Stuart Hay

Lisa Cahill Tide #3 Kiln formed glass and stainless steel fixings 88 H x 180 W x 10 D cm

14

Pialligo, Australian Capital Territory, Australia

The fragility of glass combined with the impermanence of paper is intended to evoke notions of an ephemeral landscape and encourage the viewer to consider the transitory nature of human existence.

Photographer: Xavier Bolla

Christine Cathie Reclining O-void Cast lead crystal, acid etched and polished 18 H x 56 W x 35 D cm

16

Herne Bay, Auckland, New Zealand

When I turned the O-void to its side I found I had to approach the form in a different way - the walls became higher and the shape more elongated, but still working with smooth twists in curve and variations in thickness, and using the polished face to define that curve.

Blocked Cast, cold worked and glued glass

Inspired by our compulsion to control nature to meet our needs.

15 H x 17 W x 53 D cm

Blocked is an arrangement of sticks and Banksia transformed into both a positive and a negative image within glass. The block represents the controlling built environment whilst nature adapts within and around the new.

Photographer: Greg Piper

Alasdair Gordon Kangaroo Paw Blown, overlaid colour and copper wheel engraved glass 24 H x 11.5 W x 11.5 D cm

Palmyra, Western Australia, Australia

My intention in this work was to explore the sculptural qualities of the Kangaroo Paw using the traditional engraving technique of copper wheel.

Holly Grace Thredbo Blown and kiln formed glass 45 H x 100 W x 17 D cm

26

South Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

Thredbo is a photographic journey in glass that explores the Australian Highlands in New South Wales. This study translates the harsh, rugged beauty of the alpine region into a personal interpretation of the landscape.

Roslyn Harris Termination of Analysis Glass decals, fused and slumped glass 98 H x 58 W x 3 D cm

28

Caulfield South, Victoria, Australia

This piece is composed from fragments of administration records that were found in an abandoned mental institution. This work discusses the notion that a ‘documented’ existence is not a whole story. A “mental patient” may have been described in terms of pathologies, etc., but was still a complex human.

Photographer: Andrew Barcham

Roslyn Harris The Diagnosis Series – Bipolar Disorder Fused, slumped and sandblasted 12 H x 35 W x 32 D cm

30

Caulfield South, Victoria, Australia

Within the Bipolar Disorder composition I aim to combine two conflicting states of mind; one of happiness caused by the euphoric brightness that invades the mind and one of sadness caused by a loss that has never manifested itself in reality. Both extremities are represented as being corrosive over time.

Photographer: Andrew Barcham

Sue Hawker Portrait of Celina Pâte de verre 43 H x 32 W x 28 D cm

32

Kerikeri, Northland, New Zealand

This work conveys a sense of young Celina. I had always seen her as the archetypical tomboy – rough and tumble and allergic to dresses. But the flower girl who glided down the aisle at her cousin’s wedding liberated a new persona.

Photographer: Ron Hawker

Jennifer Kemarre Martiniello Loop Weave Dilibags (Set of 2) Hot blown glass with canes 27 H x 23.5 W x 8 D cm 39 H x 12.5 W x 10 D cm Gaffer: Tom Rowney

34

Rivett, Australian Capital Territory, Australia

These dilibags are inspired by traditional Aboriginal woven loop weave dilibags from North-East Arnhemland. I have experimented with various opaque and translucent colours to invoke traditional grasses and pandanus, as well as techniques to evoke the beauty of traditional weaves and forms.

Photographer: Belinda Morgan-Pratten

Te RŌngŌ Kirkwood Te Puhuia-Hinengaro Kiln formed, fused, cold worked and slumped glass with flax fibre 5 H x 98 W x 62 D cm Weaver: Mandy Sunlight

36

Silverdale, Auckland, New Zealand

An exploration of the sacred Maori cloak form, a Kahu Toi – Warriors Cloak. Taking the form from a protective garment to a sculpted art object where glass and light combine to collapse layers of time and space, each piece represents an ancestral connection, a cloak of healing consciousness.

KuBHo Collaboration Vessel 1 & Vessel 2 Engraved glass 17 H x 28.5 W x 21 D cm 11 H x 37 W x 26.5 D cm

38

Annandale, New South Wales, Australia

Formed in 2011, KuBHo represents collaborations on a project basis involving the skills and ideas of two or more artists. KuBHo has developed new carving techniques that are shown in these vessels.

40

Weston, Australian Capital Territory, Australia

In 2011, floodwaters filled a pelican breeding ground near Birdsville. The lake was a sea of feathers of old and young birds, but the birds left in droves when fish stocks declined, abandoning many nests with young too immature to fly. The vacant eggs, a testimony.

Typographic Specimens: Lost Words Selective laser sintered glass, silver leaf, kiln formed and blown glass

Language is constantly changing and evolving; words are archived from use and become mere etymological artefacts.

19 H x 48 W x 14 D cm

This piece showcases three ’Lost Words’. By creating them in glass through a new process called selective laser sintering, these words are preserved as typographic specimens.

Tom Moore Bear in the Woods Blown and solid glass with silver leaf 21 H x 23 W x 9 D cm 21 H x 22 W x 8 D cm 22 H x 22 W x 10 D cm 7 H x 7 W x 7 D cm

44

Richmond, South Australia, Australia

Bear in the Woods has been designed for release as a numbered limited edition. It is intended for use as a vase and as a piece of small sculpture. I have chosen to show three units together as an interesting example of acceptable variance within hand-made multiples.

Photographer: Grant Hancock

Denise Pepper Punto in Aria (Stitches in Air) Pâte de verre 60 H x 35 W x 30 D cm

46

Bayswater, Western Australia, Australia

My contemporary connotation of the ‘cape collar’ retains its historical elegance and homage as an heirloom. I have crafted pâte de verre lace in which glass frit captures the decoration and detail found in the intricate weave. The effect is delicate and complex.

Photographer: Eva Fernandez

Julia Reimer Burrow Blown glass 19 H x 40 W x 35 D cm

48

Birkenhead, South Australia, Australia

I am interested in how the force of life is manifested in ordinary and minor structures in nature. Though it is often overlooked, this force of life seems indomitable, hopeful and beautiful in its essence.

Photographer: Michael Hines

Dale Roberts Subsurface Blown, incalmo, sandblasted and cold worked. 42 H x 38 W x 14 D cm

50

Paddy Robinson The Fishermen Knitted and slumped fibreglass mounted on glass (x12) 26 H x 32 W x 10 D cm

52

Sofala, New South Wales, Australia

In Ireland, fishermen wear different designs by which they can be known - in the case of an accident they can be identified. In Australia, we can perhaps identify our tribe/family in patterns and traditions from the countries of our origin.

Photographer: Bruce Alexander

Tyler Rock Still Water Blown glass with water, lights, compressed gas, microphones, amplifier, speaker and electronic switches 55 H x 45 W x 45 D cm

54

Birkenhead, South Australia, Australia

Using light and reflection, this installation creates an immersive experience. As the viewer approaches the cast light image on the floor created by the object, a quiet ensues that is disrupted only when there is noise. The object responds to sound, which creates a disturbance of the perceptual field; an interaction, which in most cases, leaves the viewer seeking stillness once again.

Photographer: Christopher Boha

Tim Shaw The Rising Mold blown incalmo glass, applied tiles, carved and sandblasted 35 H x 35 W x 35 D cm

56

Stirling, South Australia, Australia

A remarkable vision of the future, there is no doubt that these unique desert cityscapes will continue to grow into the future, keeping up with the spirit of the age and defying land, water and gravity. The new age is upon us to be embraced by all.

Photographer: Iain Bond

Anne Sorensen One Kiln formed, slumped and coldworked glass

Emma Varga Day & Night P창te de verre glass elements sewn onto organza Organza 105 H x 60 W cm each Glass centre 40 H x 40 W cm each

Brookvale, New South Wales, Australia

Day & Night tapestry panels are an exploration in developing new ways of assembling glass elements and combining other materials with glass. The contrasting duo of Day & Night is inspired by images seen from above the clouds on an aeroplane while flying over the Pacific Ocean at an altitude of 33,000 feet.

Glossary of Glass Terms Acid Etched The process of acidic, caustic or abrasive substances to create matt surfaces on glass. Annealing The controlled cooling of glass in order to remove any strains that may have otherwise been ‘frozen’ into the object by rapid cooling. Blown Glass The process of forming an object by inflating a glob of molten glass gathered on the end of a blowpipe. The glassblower or gaffer blows through the blowpipe, inflating the glob, which is then manipulated into the required form by swinging, rolling on a marver or shaping with tools. Blowpipe A hollow, tapered metal tube, usually 1.3m long. The glassblower gathers molten glass on the thicker end of the pipe and blows through the narrow end to inflate and shape the glass. The blowpipe comes in different sizes depending on the height of the worker, the strength of the worker and the size of the piece to be blown. Borosilicate Glass A glass made from both silica and boric oxide usually manufactured for laboratory ware, domestic cooking ware and for many kinds of technical purposes where a relatively high resistance to both heat and thermal shock is required. It is also used for low expansiontype glass required to bond to metals and for glass with high degrees of chemical resistance. Ideal for lampworking. Bullseye Glass The brand name of a glass manufactured in the USA for the specific purpose of kiln working. Bullseye glasses are well known for reliable compatibility, meaning that they have the same or a similar rate of expansion.

82

Cameo Glass A method of carving through fused layers of glass, which nearly always features a raised, positive image against a background of contrasting colour.

Cold Worked An all-embracing term for the various techniques carried out when the glass is cold, such as engraving, grinding, carving, cutting, etc.

Cane Rods of glass usually formed by drawing out long lengths of glass from large gathers on a punty iron. Bundles of canes are often fused together and drawn out again to a suitable diameter before being cut into small decorative pieces, such as millefiori, for picking up into paperweights. They are also cut into lengths and placed against the side of an open mould for picking up onto a gather which is marvered and pulled out to make rods used for opaque twists and filigree work.

Copper Wheel Engraving A form of engraving where glass is shaped by a small copper wheel on a lathe. This engraving lathe uses spindles of various sizes to fit a variety of copper discs. Decals A plastic, cloth or paper material that has a pattern or image printed on it that can be moved to another surface upon contact, usually with the aid of heat or water.

Carved Glass which has been cut or abraded into shape from a solid block. It is also one that can be used to refer to blown or cast glass which has been further shaped by cutting, abrading, nibbling and/or grinding.

Dichroic Refers to a colour that has been manufactured and coated with various chemicals to give specific properties in relation to the transmission or reflection of light, i.e. when two or more colours react according to variants of polarised light passing through.

Casting A process of shaping molten glass by pouring or melting it into a mould.

Fibreglass A fiber reinforced polymer made of a plastic matrix reinforced by fine fibers of glass.

Cire Perdue The ancient technique traditionally used for the casting of bronze and precious metals. The technique is now widely used for casting glass objects. The basic process involves producing a form in wax, which, after being covered with a suitable investment to make a mould, is heated sufficiently in a burn-out kiln or double boiler so the wax melts and runs out. Glass is then melted into the space left by the wax to produce a replica of the original form.

Flameworking The process of forming glass objects from glass tubing and rod by heating in a flame from a torch. Also called lampworking. Furnace The primary heating unit from where the glassblower gathers molten glass. Fusing The process of heating pieces of glass in a furnace or kiln until they bond.

Gaffer (English: corruption of ‘grandfather’) The master craftsperson in charge of a chair or team of hot glass workers.

Hot Glass A generic term for glass working from the furnace.

Gaffer Glass A New Zealand company that manufactures coloured crystal and blowing glass that is compatible with the majority of glasses used throughout Australasia.

Hot Worked or Sculpted A technique in which molten glass is gathered directly from the furnace on a punty and manipulated using specialised tools.

Glass Blowing The shaping of molten glass by air pressure and manipulation. Glass Enamels Paint made of finely ground glass particles with a relatively low melting point which, once applied, are fired onto the glass using a kiln. Glory Hole The furnace used to reheat glass on the blowpipe or punty. Graal A technique, reputedly developed at the Orrefors factory, used in order to create more precise decoration than previously possible at the glassmaker’s chair. A gather of clear glass is cased with a layer of coloured glass or vice versa. It is then blown into a bubble and either left in this form or opened up into a bowl before being annealed. The layer of colour is cut and abraded by sandblasting or etched with acid to produce the required decoration. The bubble or bowl is then heated and picked up on either a punty or blowpipe to be worked to the final form. The name ‘Graal’ refers to the legendary bowl in which the blood of Christ was collected as he hung on the cross.

Incalmo The technique of joining two or more sections of blown glass while hot. Inclusions A collective term for bubbles, precious metal, glass particles and other materials that have been added to the internal layer of a glass object for decorative effect. Intaglio Engraving Refers to any form of engraving which is cut or incised. It is now also generally accepted as referring to all designs that are engraved into the glass as negative form, giving an impression of actually standing out as positive relief. It is usually carried out by using a small lathe equipped with copper wheels which are fed with a mixture of oil and abrasives. Kiln Forming The process of fusing or shaping (usually in or over a mould) by heating in a kiln. Laminated The joining together of layers of glass either by fusing or the use of adhesives. Lead Crystal Glass that contains a high percentage of lead oxide. It is relatively soft and has a high refractive index. Ideal for wheel cutting.

Lost Wax A technique adapted from metalworking. The object to be made in glass is modeled in wax and encased in a plaster mix. The wax is melted out of the plaster, thus forming the mould into which molten or powdered glass is added. After annealing, the mould is removed from the glass object, which is then cold finished by grinding, sandblasting or fire or acid polishing depending on the surface required. Marvering The technique of rotating hot glass on a polished iron or marble slab to cool, control and centre on the blowpipe. Melt Molten glass obtained by melting a batch of raw materials at one time. Merletto A particular form of cane work. Mould Blown The process of forming an object by inflating a glob of molten glass into a wooden or metal carved mould. In this way, the shape and the texture of the bubble of glass is determined by the design on the interior of the mould rather than the glassworker. Murrini A cross cut piece of glass (with a design or colour pattern) used in the creation of larger glass works. Overlay A layer of glass gathered over a layer of a different coloured glass.

Glossary of Glass Terms (continued) Pâte de Verre (French: glass paste) A process that involves making a paste of powdered glass that is applied to a mould. When fired, the particles melt and bond with each other creating a frosted or opaque glass that is rich in colour and texture.

Selective Laser Sintering An additive manufacturing technique that uses a high power laser to fuse small particles of plastic, metal, ceramic or glass powders into a mass that has a desired threedimensional shape.

Pâte de Crystal A technique that differs to pâte de verre in the particle size and composition of glass in the paste.

Slumping A process, generally done in a kiln, which uses heat and gravity to change the shape of a three-dimensional form.

Polishing A cold working process where the glass object is smoothed by holding it against a rotating wheel fed with a fine abrasive, immersing it in acid or using a hot flame.

Spectrum Glass An American manufacturer of products for architecture, kiln forming and other glassworking arts.

Punty A metal rod for gathering and manipulating the hot glass. It is usually used to remove the partly formed glass object from the blowpipe and for bringing ‘bits’ of hot glass to the glass blower to be applied as handles, prunts or other decoration to a piece. Sandblasting A technique that produces a matt surface to achieve texture and decoration or to re-define a shape by sandcarving. An air compressor is used to propel sand or grit onto the object or surface. Pioneered by Val St Lambert in 1907. Sandcasting A method of producing glass forms by pressing a form into damp sand to create an impression. When the form is removed, a negative space is left in which to pour the molten glass. The glass is then removed from the sand and annealed in a kiln in the usual manner.

Spin Cast A variation on an industrial centrifugal casting technique. The metal moulds normally used are replaced with an arrangement which permits the use of mouldable sand, thus allowing one-off items to be produced. Hot glass is ladled into the sand mould, which is then spun. Centrifugal force pushes the glass up the sides of the mould to form a hollow casting. Stained Glass Usually refers to coloured or painted glass used as a decorative element in windows. These elements are generally joined with lengths of lead channeling. Waterjet Cut The process of using a highly pressurised jet of water or a mixture of water and an abrasive substance to cut glass. Wheel Cut The use of various types of abrasive wheels to produce a wide range of decorating facets and cuts.

Heat transforms the state of glass from solid to liquid. The mass of the glass inside the mould collapses under gravity and density increases as melting continues. My process allows the object to inherit both the beauty of the material as well as my desire to control it.
