In the spring, I was in bed surfing the web.

2

Dad thrust my door ajar. “Scrap that screen,” said Dad, “It is a splendid night. Come for a run.”

3

So we strapped on our boots and ran onto the starlit street.

At the end of the street we ran down a trail and into a park.

5

Soon the trail turned into a dark trench with twisting scrub and drenching ponds. 6

I splash, and I scram. I scrap, and I strain.

7

“I am afraid that I do not like your spring night runs,” I screech at Dad, as I turn and sprint back to my bed.

Comprehension Questions: 1. What was she doing when her Dad came into her room? 2. What did they put on before the run? 3. Do you think she enjoyed the run? Why? Each series has been written with a slightly different progression to offer reading opportunities at more stages.
