Slugs and Snails are splendid little gastropods (gas-tro-pods). They have been on the planet much longer than we have.
Gastropod from Greek words: ‘gastro’ meaning stomach and ‘pod’ meaning foot. 2
3
A snail has a shell to protect it from birds. Birds like to feed on snails. 4
A Slug has no shell to protect it, but it can get into tight gaps and spots that snails cannot. 5
Snails and slugs are pests in a garden. They munch and crunch for weeks and weeks. 6
Snails and slugs have hundreds of teeth. 7
Look at the snail trail. You can track down a snail or slug if you track its trail. 8
Comprehension Questions: 1. What advantage do snails have over slugs? 2. What advantage do slugs have over snails? 3. How can you track a snail? Each series has been written with a slightly different progression to offer reading opportunities at more stages.
