What makes Mog and Gom books decodable? The first book is introduced after children learn the sounds for s a t p i. This book only uses decodable regular words that use those grapheme-phoneme correspondences (GPCs). Letter sounds (phonemes) and the spellings (graphemes) that represent them are introduced systematically. Text in each book is limited to the graphemes that have already been taught.
What are Tricky Words? These are words that are not yet decodable, but are needed to construct sentences, such as ‘the’ and ‘to’. These are gradually introduced like the sounds and only previously used tricky words are used. When a new tricky word is introduced the tricky part is highlighted throughout the story.
The Code It is important that students are aware that there is an underlying code to the English language. The chart on the opposite page shows the spellings for different sounds taught in Units 1 to 7. The chart on the next page includes new spellings taught in Units 8-17. Sounds can be spelled with more than one letter and the same spelling can make different sounds (e.g. ea in bread and sea).

Ways to support your child when reading at home: 1. Make sure that your child knows what the focus sound is before reading the story. 2. Ensure your child can read all previous tricky words listed. When teaching tricky words, remind your child that some words are tricky and can’t be decoded. Sound out the regular letters while pointing at them (e.g. s-d in the word “said”). Provide the sound for the tricky part ‘ai’, then blend through the word s-e-d. 3. Prompt your child to blend the word from left to right quickly. 4. If your child is stuck on a word, read it to them. 5. Always use pure sounds, do not add a schwa to the end of sounds. e.g. say c-u-p not cuh-u-puh. 6. Make sure reading sessions stay positive and relaxed. Encourage and praise your child for their efforts. Each book is matched to your child’s current reading level. Please don’t worry if it seems too easy – your child needs to develop fluency and confidence in reading.
Glossary: CVC Words: CVC stands for consonant vowel consonant (e.g. c a t). Nearly all words used in units 1 to 7 use this pattern. CCVC words (e.g. f r o m) are introduced at Unit 8.
Digraphs: Consonant digraphs such as ff, ll, qu, ch, sh and vowel digraphs such as ai, ee, oa, oo are two letters that make a single sound.
Blending: Pushing sounds together to make a word (e.g. c - a - t = cat).
Segmenting: Pushing sounds apart in a word (e.g. cat = c - a - t).
Phoneme: The sound that a letter or group of letters makes. Grapheme: A letter or group of letters that represent a sound (phoneme).
Morpheme: Alters the grammatical function of a word.
(e.g. ownership - ’s - The cat’s meow / The cats meow).
Magic e / Split Digraph: A sound made up of two letters, which are split (e.g. a-e in the word take). ISBN 942-1 - 0 0 2 4 1 4 - 0 0 - 7 © 2021 Smart Kids Product code: MG00
