Lighting the Path Fundraiser Benefits the Madonna Fund at the Virginia Thurston Healing Garden The Virgina Thurston Healing Garden is a support center for those who are coping with cancer. Currently serving over 165 cities and towns in Massachusetts and beyond, it is an invaluable and unique resource both during and after cancer treatment. As we are all aware, cancer is a devastating disease which has far reaching effects not only for those indi-

action unlimited viduals diagnosed with cancer, but also for their families. While a client of the Healing Garden, Linda Hair-Sullivan became aware of the difficult struggle that young mothers have when trying to nurture and provide for their children while they themselves are battling cancer. Often coping with overwhelming medication side effects, they face a monumental battle working to regain their health and strength all the while caring for those who rely on them. In order to support these young women as they travel this difficult path, Linda established the Madonna Fund. This fund is dedicated to providing child

care so that these mothers can have peace of mind knowing that their children are being cared for while they are undergoing treatment or recuperating at home. There is no other resource that specifically supports children during their parent’s illness. The fund seeks to provide not only child care, but positive, balancing experiences for children and mothers such as membership to the YMCA, summer camp, or healthy lifestyle classes at the Healing Garden. Margaret Koch, Executive Director of the Healing Garden states, “I am deeply grateful for this initiative. It is and will be tremendously helpful to our clients in need.”

Please join us in this unique opportunity to ease the burden and light the path forward for these struggling families. Your sponsorship, donation and/or presence at “Lighting the Path”, our fundraiser, will show these families that they are not alone. Museum Exhibit Still Standing: The Barns of Acton A Freedom’s Way “Hidden Treasures” Exhibit Hosmer House Museum, 300 Main Street, Acton The springtime 2017 exhibit in Gallery I at the Hosmer House Museum—a collaboration between Acton Boxborough Regional High School and the Acton Historical Society—will feature the creative work of current photography students under the guidance of art teacher, Nat Martin. Selected paintings and sketches of Acton’s esteemed artist, Arthur Davis (1863– 1953), will be on view as well. Davis captured both the essence and the context of several local barns, some of them still standing. The consultations of Davis curator, Wanda Null; architectural historian, Anne Forbes; and town historian, Bill Klauer have been invaluable to the shaping of this tribute to Acton’s agrarian past. The exhibit of images, past and present, is Acton’s 2017

contribution to “Freedom’s Way Hidden Treasures” project. See: http://www.discoverhiddentreasures.org The Exhibit in Gallery I will be open every weekend on both Saturdays and Sundays during the month of May. The admission fee of just $3.00/person is a welcome contribution to the costs of maintaining the museum and presenting these local history-inspired exhibits to the membership and our larger community. (AHS membership includes free admission.) Please check our website for hours by date: See www.actonhistoricalsociety.org, or email jenkslibrary@verizon.net for further information.

imported aggressive English (house) sparrows. Bluebirds will quickly accept manmade boxes for their specific requirements - namely a floor roughly 4½” x 4½”, with an entrance home 1½” set 6” above the floor. The box should have ventilation holes on the sides or front, just under the roof overhang. Provision should be made on one side, front, or top can be easily opened and cleaned for yearly and in-between nesting cleaning. (You wouldn’t want to sleep in last year’s bed, would you?) No perch in front of the hole that will encourage sparrows. The box should be mounted on a greased metal pole or pipe set out in the open and not more than 6 feet from the ground. Regular monitoring is necessary to discourage English Sparrows from taking over, as they consistently kill the parents and their babies! English Sparrows are referred to as “The Hitlers of the Bird World.” Being a Europe import and pest they are not protected by law. Keep them evicted. With human knowledge and help, this native American Bluebird can survive. For more information, Google “Helping Bluebirds” or “Bluebird Nesting Boxes.” Swallows will also use these boxes. Each swallow eats a minimum of 6,000 insects a day, mainly mosquitoes.

Thoreau loved them personally, admired their beauty, studied how they grew, took them as spiritual companions and wrote about them as few have. Higgins is a writer and editor in Concord, Massachusetts. His most recent book, Thoreau and the Language of Trees, was published in April by the University of California Press. A former longtime staff writer for the Boston Globe, Higgins’s writing has appeared in the New York Times, Atlantic Monthly, Christian Century, and Smithsonian. action unlimited Readers of all ages enjoy books in series but often wonder what the right order is for reading the works of a newly discovered author or when the next book in a series will come out. Three resources on the library’s website can help answer those questions. Use FictFact to track your favorite fiction series and receive free alerts to remind you when new books in the series are being published. Juvenile Series and Sequels helps youngsters and adults discover complete series in children’s literature. Series are classified into three groups, Juvenile Easy (JE), Juvenile (J), and Young Adult (YA). The site What’s Next shows all the books in a series and their order. To find these resources, go to http://www.actonmemoriallibrary.org/resources-research/ book-lists/, scroll down to Books in Series and then click on the topic that suits your needs the best. Seniors, We Need Your Feedback! The Boxborough COA encourages all local seniors to attend a public forum to be held on Tuesday, April 25, at 1 PM, at the Sargent Memorial Library in Boxborough. At that forum, resi-

dents will learn about the various options that are being considered for a school improvement plan. The Acton Boxborough Regional School District is involved in a major building project. This is a complex issue that will have a major impact on local taxes and on property values. Last year, education was almost 60 percent of Boxborough’s Town budget. Also, the quality of schools has a major impact on home prices. So even if you have no children in the local school, this project will affect you and your future. Today, the towns are considering numerous options. Should we build a new single, twin,

or triple school? Should Middle School be grades 6-8 instead of 7-8? Which grades should be in which schools? Should we have an Early Childhood Center? Costs of these options vary greatly. Come share your thoughts at this forum, while you learn more about the benefits and challenges of each plan. The decisions made now will affect us all for years. With public participation, the

final decision will reflect what really matters to us.

Award Winning Film “Tashi And The Monk” Centerpiece Of May 17th Fundraising Event Jhamtse International, a nonprofit group based in Acton, will present a FREE screening Emmy award winning film “Tashi and The Monk” at the Fine Arts Theatre in Maynard, MA. The event will take place on Wednesday, May 17th from 6:30-8:30pm as a benefit for the Jhamtse Gatsal Children’s Community, a brave social experiment for children, taking place on a remote mountaintop in the Himalayas. Executive Director Odessa Dwarika and Jhamtse International Board

members will be present to answer questions. The trailer for the film can be viewed at https:// vimeo.com/95827076. Buddhist Monk Lobsang Phuntsok was trained under the guidance of His Holiness the Dalai Lama but 11 years ago he left behind a life as a spiritual teacher in Concord, Massachusetts to create a unique community in the foothills of the Himalayas which rescues orphaned and neglected children. The film documents 5 year-old Tashi, the newest arrival. Her mother has recently passed away and she’s been abandoned by her alcoholic father. Wild and troubled, Tashi is struggling to find her place amongst 84 new siblings. Lobsang has channeled his own unhappy childhood into an opportunity for other ‘uninvited guests of the universe’ to avoid a similar fate. But Can the community’s love and compassion transform Tashi’s alienation and tantrums into a capacity to make her first real friend? Jhamtse International invites the public to witness the magic of “Tashi and the Monk”. This special event will be held from 6:30pm to 8:30pm at Maynard, Fine Arts Theatre, 19 Summer St. Maynard MA. Doors will open at 6:00pm for a silent auction and cash bar. The film will be shown at 7pm followed by a Q&A at 8pm. The screening and event is free and all are welcome to attend. Jhamtse International is a non-profit organization. For more information on Jhamtse International, visit jhamtseinternational.org.

The Mikado! Don’t miss The Mikado: Gilbert & Sullivan’s beloved comic operetta, which brilliantly lampoons Victorian politics—or politics of any age. Watch as the consequences of appointing unqualified politicians and buyable bureaucrats unfold with merry song and witty banter— and romantic consequences. A common prisoner has been appointed Lord High Executioner

and he finds he must cut his own head off. Witness the pompous bureaucrat who will perform any service—no matter how degrading—for a price. And greet the benevolently delusional Mikado, who enacts laws and punishments that rain turmoil on the country. The production features a full orchestra, amazing costumes, and a talented cast! Stage direction is by James Ravan; music direction is by Craig Tata. VENUE: Maynard High School Auditorium, 1 Tiger Drive, Maynard. Reaching Out For Donations Habitat for Humanity NCM is looking for donations for their ReStore. The ReStore, located in Leominster MA, sells donated new and gently used furniture, home improvement and building materials at a fraction (typically 50-70 percent) of the original retail value. All profits go to support home ownership for hard working families in North Central Massachusetts, while keeping good reusable materials

Fun By The Numbers Like puzzles? Then you’ll love sudoku. This mind-bending puzzle will have you hooked from the moment you square off, so sharpen your pencil and put your sudoku savvy to the test!

Here’s How It Works:

Answers:

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

in use and out of the landfill. Since opening on January 5, 2011, the Habitat for Humanity’s Restore has diverted over 1,000 tons of goods from the landfill. That is over 2,205,000 pounds or about 77 dump trucks full of usable items. The ReStore mission is to increase the number of homes built for hard working, low income families, keep good and reusable items out of the landfill, provide quality materials to the general public at discounted prices, and bring people together to build homes, communities and hope. When you donate your gently used items to the Restore, you’re helping change the lives of many by making affordable home ownership a reality! If there are items you would like to donate, there are several options to donate the gently used items. The store is open Wednesday through Saturday 10:00 am until 4:00 pm and staff will be happy to assist you in offloading your items. You can also contact the store by phone at 978.227.5556 or use the online form at www.restorencm. org/donate to schedule a donation pick-up for qualifying items. Donations are picked up Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. Habitat for Humanity North Central Massachusetts Habitat for Humanity NCM offers a hand up, not a hand out, to hard-working, low-income central Massachusetts families seeking affordable homeownership. Through volunteer labor and donations of money and materials, Habitat NCM builds and rehabilitates simple, decent houses alongside our homeowner partner families.

OPEN YOUR HOME TO A LOVING COMPANION

Spooky Male, 1 year old, black cat. My name might be scary but I’m not. Sure, I like to hide in cubbies or in a bed but if you find me, then I have a nice surprise for you. The surprise is that I’ll let you hold me for quite a while. Also, my green eyes look stunning with my fur. Ok, so I’m a come-see-me cat which means you’ll have to find me. If you have a friendly cat looking for a friend then I bet I can blossom in your home and become one of your favorite cats. I’m not aggressive and if I’m scared, I’ll hide so don’t worry that I’ll chase your other cat, that won’t happen. Please give me a chance to be a part of your family soon. All cats have been spayed/neutered and are up to date on shots. Please visit our website at www.catsontheweb.org to view all our shelter residents and crafts.

Brown Dog Coalition Brown Dog Coalition is a foster based rescue group headquartered in Hopkinton, MA. We rescue dogs from a kill shelter in Alabama and match them with wonderful forever homes in Mass. We rely on FOSTERS to be able to continue this important work for these special dogs, who otherwise would not have a chance. Providing a stable home environment for a dog is critical in helping them bridge the gap of time between going from a shelter to their forever home and decreases the stress of transition. Fostering can be a hugely rewarding experience with a far reaching impact! We have a bunch of awesome adults and puppies coming up over the next few months. We currently transport dogs on an approximately 2 week basis. They are up to date on all shots, spayed/neutered, microchipped, and pre-screened for temperament. Would you be willing to open up your home and your heart?
