While a client of the Healing Garden, Linda Hair-Sullivan became aware of the difficult struggle that young mothers have when trying to nurture and provide for their children while they themselves are battling cancer. Often coping with overwhelming medication side effects, they face a monumental battle working to regain their health and strength all the while caring for those who rely on them. In order to support these young women as they travel this difficult path, Linda established the Madonna Fund. This fund is dedicated to providing child care so that these mothers can have peace of mind knowing that their children are being cared for while they are undergoing treatment or recuperating at home. Arbor Day 2017 On SATURDAY, April 29, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. the Friends of the Tree Warden and the Groton Garden Club will host the Arbor Day celebration in Groton. This year’s festivities will take place at our new Fire Station on Farmers Row. The folks at the Fire Station will host us with an open house and the chance to see fire equipment. In our Groton records, the first time trees were mention at a meeting was on March 5, 1665. Citizens voted that there should be trees marked for shade for cattle in all common highways and they should be marked with a “T”. Any person found cutting

down a tree of more that 6 inches in diameter (except for walnut or pine) would be fined 10 shillings. In his 1912 book, “Facts Relating to the History of Groton Mass” Samuel Green enthused, “Its (Groton) beautiful trees have always been admired, especially the elms: not only those which add so such beauty to the Main Street, but also many in the outlying districts”. Continuing our heritage for planting trees, our ARBOR DAY 2017 commences our town spring planting. Tom Delaney, our Tree Warden, and his “right hand” group, Friends of the Tree Warden work in this way to keep Groton beautiful.

Church Supper The next supper at Christian Union Church in West Groton will be held on Sat. April 22nd (PLEASE NOTE - 4TH SAT). Ayer Shirley Robotics Team “Let’s build something amazing!” is the Ayer Shirley Regional High School’s robot-

ics team’s motto, and they have lived up to it. They are on their way to St. Louis to compete in the April 26-29 FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) Championship to vie for the title of World Champion. What earned the Ayer Shirley team, known as Andromeda One, the opportunity to compete at “World’s” in St. Louis for the third time in its short four-year history was not just building and competing with a technologically sound robot, earning it the rank of 27 out of 194 FRC teams in New England. Rather, it was the team’s commitment to school and community outreach, combined with its commitment to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), that earned the team one of two Engineering Inspiration (EI) awards at the New England District Competition at UNH in Durham, NH this past weekend. In addition, team member Will Doyle, a junior, was selected as a Dean’s List Finalist competing at the World Championship. The Road to St. Louis The road to St. Louis started this year in January when the rules for this year’s FIRST® STEAMWORKSSM competition were released, giving teams across the world six weeks to build a robot that could shoot balls into a boiler, pick up and deliver gears, and climb a rope. The Ayer Shirley team worked many late hours after school and on weekends to craft their strategy and their robot.

At the New England District FIRST Robotics competition at Worcester Polytechnic Institute on March 9 and 10, the team won the prestigious Chairman’s Award for the third year in a row. The weekend of March 24, Andromeda One was awarded the Engineering Inspiration Award at the Southern NH District Competition at Bedford High School, guaranteeing them a spot at the NE District Championship at UNH in Durham, NH the weekend of April 5.

Ranked 27 out of 194 teams competing last weekend, the team was again awarded the EI Award, solidifying their spot at the St. Louis competition. The FRC Championship, this year hosted by two cities, Houston and St. Louis, was previously the final and largest event of the FRC Season. This year, however, the winner of each of those two regional championships will then play the other city’s champion in July at the FIRST Festival of Champions in New Hampshire. That event will be the Super Bowl of Robotics. The many mentors and students on the ASRHS team could not be prouder of their accom-
