Department of Conservation and Recreation’s Lakes and Ponds Program. The workshop begins with an introduction to the invasive non-native species issue, how exotic species are introduced into our waterways, methods of dispersal, basic terminology, and guidance on performing bi-weekly monitoring and completing plant surveys. The remaining 3/4 of the class will engage participants in hands-on identification. A variety of nonnative and native plant species are provided, and people are encouraged to bring in their own samples of aquatic plants (no terrestrials please, we’re focusing strictly on aquatics). Participants will become familiar with using a dichotomous key and, although the emphasis is on exotic species, the goal is to teach people how to use the key so that they will be able to identify the majority of common aquatic plants in their lake or pond (native or otherwise). This workshop is free and open to the public, made possible by a grant from the Greater Lowell Community Foundation. The workshop is limited to 30 people; pre-registration is

Mass Audubon, the state’s largest nature conservation nonprofit, has succeeded the Museum of Science in overseeing Firefly Watch and is continuing to partner with the laboratory of Tufts University biology professor Sara Lewis, a recognized authority on North American firefly behavior and ecology. “I’m absolutely thrilled to be part of this exciting citizen science project with Mass Audubon,” Professor Lewis said. “As we try to track firefly population trends around the country, we really need everyone’s help. Plus, it’s fun! Everyone loves watching—and counting—fireflies, right?” Director of Education Kris Scopinich shared the Tufts researcher’s enthusiasm, noting, “Citizen science aligns closely with Mass Audubon’s mission to connect people with nature, so we are truly excited to be overseeing Firefly Watch and partnering with Sara Lewis and her team. “Mass Audubon members and all those who participate from

The first event, starting at 2 pm, is a 1-mile fun run that is open to all ages. The second event, starting at 2:30 pm, is a 5K (3.1 miles) race that is open to both runners and walkers. The event is USATF sanctioned and certified and has professional, computerized finish line timing for both races. The 5K course is closed to traffic and has mile markers, timed splits, and a water station on the course. A complementary bag check is available at the park. The event is fun for the whole family and includes post-race refreshments for the runners, live music by Littleton band PowerSurge, and childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s activities at scenic Fay Park. All 1-mile finishers receive a ribbon, and the top three male and female finishers in seven age categories receive medals in the 5K race. There are also cash prizes for the first place overall male and female 5K finishers. Pre-race registration fees are
$25 for the 5K with a race tech shirt, $5 for the 1-mile without shirt, and $15 for the 1-mile with shirt. Shirts are guaranteed for registrations received by September 7th.

AFIN will consider helping anyone who is recommended by clergy or social service professionals associated with a local agency. Local clergy and social service agencies know how to contact A Friend in Need on behalf of an individual in need. We do not discriminate and will try to help anyone with a genuine need.

St. Andrew’s To Host Sunday School Open Houses St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church has scheduled two open houses to introduce parents and their children to their Montessori-based Christian education program. Scheduled for Sunday, August 12 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm, and on Tuesday, August 14 from 5:30 to 7:50 pm, the Sunday School will be open for tours and staff will be on hand to answer questions. St. Andrew’s uses The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd curriculum for children ages 3-10 years old. The program is

based on Montessori principles of individual hands-on learning, which helps young children to develop and enjoy a relationship with Jesus the Good Shepherd through prayer, movement, and stories about Jesus. Each age level meets in its own room, called an “atrium”, in our newly remodeled Sunday School. The curriculum encourages children to explore and deepen their understanding of God and our worship. Children are taught and guided by a welltrained teaching staff.

Total Pain Care: It’s Up to You (NewsUSA) - The Institute of Medicine (IOM) estimates that more than 100 million people in the U.S. live with pain. For some, the pain will be temporary
and will go away on its own. However, you may be among those whose pain has become chronic, lasting several months or more. While pain is universal, health care professionals are still challenged by its unique and personal nature. Not everyone experiences pain the same way and with the same intensity. The IOM report “Relieving Pain in America” recommends an interdisciplinary approach to treating pain that actively involves the patient in their own care. “The effectiveness of pain treatments depends greatly on the strength of the clinicianpatient relationship; pain treatment is never about the clinician’s intervention alone, but about the clinician and patient (and family) working together,” according to the IOM. The best person to speak up on your behalf most often is ? you! Self-advocacy refers to an individual’s ability to effectively communicate, convey, negotiate or assert his or her own interests, desires, needs and rights. It involves making informed decisions and taking responsibility for those decisions. Whether you are a person with pain or a caregiver, self-advocacy is an essential skill to learn and embrace. In pain management, selfadvocacy is vital. It is about understanding your strengths and needs, identifying your personal goals, knowing your legal rights and responsibilities and then communicating these to your family, friends and health care team.
