changes, geographic distribution, and environmental pressures. Mass Audubon, the state’s largest nature conservation nonprofit, has succeeded the Museum of Science in overseeing Firefly Watch and is continuing to partner with the laboratory of Tufts University biology professor Sara Lewis, a recognized authority on North American firefly behavior and ecology. “I’m absolutely thrilled to be part of this exciting citizen science project with Mass Audubon,” Professor Lewis said. “As we try to track firefly population trends around the country, we really need everyone’s help. Plus, it’s fun! Everyone loves watching—and counting—fireflies, right?” Director of Education Kris Scopinich shared the Tufts researcher’s enthusiasm, noting, “Citizen science aligns closely with Mass Audubon’s mission to connect people with nature, so we are truly excited to be overseeing Firefly Watch and partnering with Sara Lewis and her team. “Mass Audubon members and all those who participate from

across the U.S. and Canada in this worthy project are working at the intersection of their own curiosity about fireflies, a concern for conservation, and scientific discovery,” Scopinich added. “Let’s also remember that fireflies are a great reason to explore all of the wonder of nature at night.” To sign up and to learn more, please visit www.massaudubon. org/fireflywatch.

Three Steps Toward A Better Retirement In 2018 (NAPSI)—For seniors who have already entered retirement, there are some important things that can be done in 2018 to make it better and more fulfilling: 1. Consider your spending. Create a budget and track your expenses. Most experts say you’ll need at least 70 to 80 percent of your current income to live the same

action unlimited lifestyle in retirement, so after you figure what you’ll get from Social Security and any other income sources, you’ll need to create a nest egg that can throw off that much without your having to use any of the principal. Also, your retirement can last for a good long time. According to AARP, a healthy, uppermiddle-class couple who are 65 today have a 43 percent chance that one or both partners will live to see 95. Financial planners now advise that you withdraw no more than 3.5 percent a year out of your savings for both your regular expenditures and one-time items like a new roof or a big vacation for the money to be around as long as you are. 2. Take that dream trip while you can. Research by Joseph K. Goodman of Washington University in St. Louis, and Sarah Lim at Seoul National University, South Korea, among others, shows experiences bring more happiness than things. You want to get in as many good times as you can while your health holds out. Another impetus: Many hotels, resorts, restaurants, attractions and tour operators

offer special discounts for older travelers. For example, for less than $100 you can get a lifetime pass that lets you enjoy every national park in the country. Ask when you book about discounts for seniors and you may save enough for an extra trip or two. 3. Inventory your assets for sources of cash. For example, take a good look at any life insurance policy you no longer need. It could be sold for a significantly greater amount than the policy’s cash surrender value through something called a Life Settlement. You get a cash payment and the purchaser assumes all future premium payments in exchange for the benefit. Candidates for life settlements are typically aged 70 or older, with a life insurance policy that has a death benefit of at least $100,000. Such a sale could improve retirement for many, yet fewer than half of American seniors are aware of the option. That’s one reason the Life Insurance Settlement Association (LISA), a non-profit organization that is the nation’s largest association representing participants in the life settlement industry, is com-

mitted to making sure that older Americans have all the information they need to make an informed decision. To explore whether a life settlement is a good option for you, you or your financial adviser can contact a licensed life settlement professional who is a member of the association and is subject to a rigorous vetting process. Learn More For further facts about life settlements, how they work and whether you’re eligible, call the LISA office at (888) 504-8561 or visit www.lisa.org.

I recently arrived at the shelter with my best pal Bee Bee. We arrived at the shelter when our previous owner was no longer able to care for us. We are very bonded to one another and must be adopted together. I’m the more outgoing of the two and I’m a very sweet girl with a lot of cute behaviors. I love to play with toys and tilt my head when you call my name. I tend to guard Bee Bee so you’ll have to pet me first, so I can make sure you’re ok before I let you pet Bee Bee. We like to rub against each other and take naps off and on during the day. All cats are spayed/neutered and up to date on shots. Top Tips To Live A Healthier, More Active Lifestyle Well Into Your Later Years (NAPSI)—According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), by 2030, one in every five Americans will be over the age of 65. Whatever your age now, it’s wise to prepare yourself mentally and physically for growing older. Adults today, the CDC adds, are looking not only to extend their lives, but to enjoy a healthier, more active lifestyle well into their later years. Here are a few simple tips to incorporate into your daily routine to ensure healthy aging: 1. Tailor your diet to include lots of organic fruits and vegetables, as well as healthy fats such as omega-3s, and limiting your intake of processed foods and added sugar. 2. Exercise three to four times a week, including a mix of moderate-intensity activity like brisk walking or water aerobics, along with vigorous-intensity activities such as playing tennis or hiking. Adding strengthening activities that work all major muscle groups is important to consider as well. 3. Work with your health care provider to introduce a foundational supplement regimen into your daily routine. Nutritional supplements contribute to adequate intake of vitamins, minerals and other beneficial compounds such as antioxidants, resveratrol and other phytonutrients to keep your cells healthy. In addition to multivitamins, other top supplements that are considered beneficial for healthy aging include: • Omega-3 fatty acids such as fish oil that help to balance inflammation and support joints, as well as cardiac and cognitive function • A multistrain probiotic to support healthy gut bacteria, leading to improved digestion

However, as the natural effects of aging begin to take their course, hormone levels often diminish, so it’s important to regulate levels of sex, thyroid and adrenal hormones to feel and function your best. Also, supporting musculoskeletal system health can help enhance mobility and joint function. The 60s and 70s: People in their 60s and 70s know that aging is about getting the most life out of their years. During these decades, nutritional supplements can support healthy vision, cognition, and digestive health. Expert Advice “Aging is a beautiful, healthy process,” explains Registered Dietitian and Director of Product Development and Education at Douglas Laboratories, Kristi Belohlavek. “With the right nutrition regimen, people can look and feel their best, no matter how many candles they’re adding to their birthday cake. With a balanced diet, exercise and proper supplementation, busy bees can stay mobile and active later in life, despite changes in muscle function and decreases

in bone density.” Many of the top-quality supplements that can protect your health come from Douglas Laboratories, a nutritional supplement company dedicated to helping people lead healthier, active lifestyles well into their later years. We’ll be doing an activity that works with the weather, whether it’s windy, sunny, or rainy. Sponsored by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts. About the Discovery Museum

Discovery Museum is a hands-on museum that blends science, nature, and play, inspiring families to explore and learn together. The museum and its Discovery Woods accessible outdoor nature playscape and 550 sf treehouse blend the best of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) learning on a beautiful 4.5-acre campus abutting 180 acres of conservation land in Acton, MA, about 20 miles west of Boston. Originally founded in 1982 and expanded to two museums in 1987, the museum reopened in a single accessible building after a complete renovation and expansion in early 2018. Hands-on, open-ended exhibits developed by professional educators inspire curiosity and exploration, providing a fun and engaging experience for children and adults to discover their world together. Serving families and schools from towns throughout the region, the museum is devoted to informal education that enhances classroom learning. Discovery Museum is committed to accessibility, and is a proud recipient of the 2017 Massachusetts Commonwealth Award, the only winner in the Access category. Discovery Museum is the winner of Boston magazine’s 2018 Best of Boston® Best Family-Friendly Museum, West. For more information please visit www.discoveryacton.org. Discovery Museum is a community-supported non-profit organization. Discovery Museum programming is supported in part by a grant from the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.

Registration For Annual Littleton Road Race! Calling all runners and walkers to the 10th annual Littleton Road Race to be held on Sunday, September 23rd at Fay Park (20 Foster St., Littleton). Registration is open and information is available at www.LittletonRoadRace. org. Registration may be completed online or by mail. Over 400 runners and walkers are expected to once again make their way over Littleton’s scenic roads in this community event to benefit the Littleton Road Race & Track Organization. Proceeds from this race will support updates to the Littleton track and field facility (50%) and the Friends of the Littleton Council on Aging (50%). The first event, starting at 2 pm, is a 1-mile fun run that is open to all ages. The second event, starting at 2:30 pm, is a 5K (3.1 miles) race that is open to both runners and walkers. The event is USATF sanctioned and certified and has professional, computerized finish line timing for both races. The 5K course is closed to traffic and has mile

markers, timed splits, and a water station on the course. A complementary bag check is available at the park. The event is fun for the whole family and includes post-race refreshments for the runners, live music by Littleton band PowerSurge, and children’s activities at scenic Fay Park. All 1-mile finishers receive a ribbon, and the top three male and female finishers in seven age categories receive medals in the 5K race. There are also cash prizes for the first place overall male and female 5K finishers. Pre-race registration fees are $25 for the 5K with a race tech shirt, $5 for the 1-mile without shirt, and $15 for the 1-mile with shirt.
