Red Cross Blood Shortage Continues Thousands of people have responded to the emergency call for blood and platelet donations issued by the American Red Cross in early July. Still, there continues to be an emergency need for donors of all blood types, especially type O, to give now to address a severe blood shortage. Red Cross blood donations are being distributed to hospitals faster than they are coming in, and right now there is less than a five-day blood supply on hand. the needs of patients and to be prepared for emergencies that require significant volumes of donated blood products. “Patients don’t get a summer break from the need for lifesaving treatments, so it is critical that hospitals have access to blood products each and every day,” said Kelly Isenor, External Communications Manager of the Massachusetts Blood Services Region. “We sincerely appreciate those who have responded to the call to help save lives, but the emergency need remains. Those who haven’t rolled up a sleeve to give are urged to do so today.” There is a particular need for type O blood, which plays an

WARNING: Hot Cars Kill Pets! People who take their dogs with them on quick trips usually care about their pets and don’t realize that a short trip to the supermarket could cause brain damage or death. On an 80 degree Fahrenheit day, the inside of a parked car can heat up to 120 degrees in just 10 minutes, even with the windows cracked. On a 90-degree day, the interior

action unlimited temperature of a parked car can reach as high as 160 degrees in less than 10 minutes. What can you do if you see an animal suffering? Break a window? Walk past the scene feeling guilty? Before deciding, here are some facts to consider. Dogs cool off by panting; they do not sweat like humans, leaving them extremely vulnerable to heatstroke. Animals can suffer brain damage or death from heatstroke in just 15 minutes. As of May 2018, 28 states have laws concerning companion animals left unattended in parked vehicles under dangerous conditions, such as intense weather conditions. Know the signs of heatstroke and how to prevent it. Symptoms of overheating in pets can include: Excessive panting or difficulty breathing Increased heart and respiratory rate Drooling Mild weakness Stupor Collapse Symptoms can also include seizures, bloody diarrhea and vomit along with an elevated body temperature of over 104 degrees. Subsequently, brain damage may set in with disorientation, collapse or loss of consciousness and seizure. Keep an eye out for these signs of distress, and also ensure that your pet is properly hydrated at all times. Make sure you give your pets plenty of fresh, clean water when it’s hot or humid outdoors. Ensure that your pets have a shady place to get out of the sun, be careful not
to over-exercise them and use your best judgment to keep them indoors when it’s extremely hot. Never let your dog linger on hot asphalt. Being so close to the ground, your pooch’s body can heat up quickly, and sensitive paw pads can burn. Keep walks during peak daytime hours to a minimum. If you see a dog or other pet trapped in a hot car: 1. Write down the make, model and license plate of the car. 2. If possible, quickly have the owner paged in the store. 3. Call the police. Do not leave the area until the owners/police arrive. For emergency situations, call 911. While waiting for the police to arrive, you can take video footage to show the police or owner, as appropriate. If there has been no response from the police or animal control officer, gather witnesses to support your observations. Make sure everyone notes the facts: time, condition of the animal, your attempts to contact authorities and owner. Massachusetts law (Title XX, Ch 140, Sec 174F) allows police, fire fighters, animal control officers and concerned citizens to remove and protect animals at risk when left in cars that become dangerously hot or cold. You may remove an animal to protect the health and safety of that animal in immediate danger if you: (i) notify law enforcement or call 911 before entering the vehicle; (ii) determine that the motor vehicle is locked or there is no other reasonable means for exit and use not more force than reasonably necessary
saturday, august 4, 2018
to enter the motor vehicle and remove the animal; (iii) have a good faith and reasonable belief, based upon known circumstances, that entry into the vehicle is reasonably necessary to prevent imminent danger or harm to the animal; and (iv) remain with the animal in a safe location in reasonable proximity to the vehicle until law enforcement or another first responder arrives. Massachusetts law further provides that a person who removes an animal from a motor vehicle pursuant to subsection (e) shall be immune from criminal or civil liability that might otherwise result from the removal.

Calling All Shutterbugs! Snap A Photo And Enter To Win The countdown has begun! Only six weeks remain to enter your photos in the Hidden Treasures 2018 Photo Contest, which launched in May as part of the annual, month-long Hidden Treasures program offered by Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area. Photographers—amateur and professional, young, older and in between—are invited to submit images that reflect the natural, cultural, and historical resources of the Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area in this inaugural Photo Contest. Your images will inspire others to connect to the people, places, and stories that make the Heritage Area unique, and will provide a narrative that links the past to the future, reinforcing the region’s sense of place. Photos may be submitted in three different categories: What’s Your Nature? Show the magic and wonder of the natural world that gives you pause and provides inspiration for you to explore the Heritage Area. Culture Reframed Show us expressions of arts and culture within the 45 unique communi-
ties of the Heritage Area. History in the Making Show us the treasured places that reveal the Heritage Area’s history— both the stories well-known and those yet to be revealed. “The Photo Contest is an exciting extension of the Hidden Treasures program which takes place in May. The Heritage Area has so many stories that have been shared through this program and the photo contest invites the community at large to participate by submitting photos of activities and special places they care about,” explained Patrice Todisco, Executive Director. Winners will receive gift certificates to some of the region’s favorite businesses including 80 Thoreau Street, The Bull Run Restaurant, Forge & Vine at The Groton Inn, Concord’s Colonial Inn, Gibbet Hill Grill, Battle Road Brew House, True West Brewery, The Rail Trail Flatbread Co., Mahoney’s Garden Center, Cataldo’s gift & garden and Idylwilde Farms. Gift certificates from Chatbooks, will be awarded to the winners of the youth categories. The contest ends September 4, 2018 at 5:00pm. For complete conditions of entry visit http:// freedomsway.org/programs/ hidden-treasures-2018-photocontest/. Voting for the People’s Choice Award will take place September 10th–September 24th. All winners will be notified before the Freedom’s Way Annual Meeting on October 28 and will be invited to attend. Sudoku
Fun By The Numbers Like puzzles? Then you’ll love sudoku. This mind-bending puzzle will have you hooked from the moment you square off, so sharpen your pencil and put your sudoku savvy to the test!
Here’s How It Works:
Answers:
Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Firefly Watch Who isn’t delighted to see fireflies begin their mysterious blinking-light displays on a mid-summer night? Fans of these intriguing insects can turn their awe into positive action by joining Mass Audubon’s Firefly Watch Citizen Science Project. Firefly Watch combines an annual summer evening ritual with crucial research. People of all ages and backgrounds can become part of a community of volunteer “citizen scientists” looking for fireflies in their backyards or nearby fields and then providing data in support of these amazing creatures and their habitats. Project citizen scientists can play an important role in answering questions related to firefly vitality, including population changes, geographic distribution, and environmental pressures. Mass Audubon, the state’s largest nature conservation nonprofit, has succeeded the Museum of Science in overseeing Firefly Watch and is continuing to partner with the laboratory

of Tufts University biology professor Sara Lewis, a recognized authority on North American firefly behavior and ecology. “I’m absolutely thrilled to be part of this exciting citizen science project with Mass Audubon,” Professor Lewis said. “As we try to track firefly population trends around the country, we really need everyone’s help. Plus, it’s fun! Everyone loves watching—and counting—fireflies, right?” Director of Education Kris Scopinich shared the Tufts researcher’s enthusiasm, noting, “Citizen science aligns closely with Mass Audubon’s mission to connect people with nature, so we are truly excited to be overseeing Firefly Watch and partnering with Sara Lewis and her team. “Mass Audubon members and all those who participate from across the U.S. and Canada in this worthy project are working at the intersection of their own curiosity about fireflies, a concern for conservation, and scientific discovery,” Scopinich added. “Let’s also remember that fireflies are a great reason to explore all of the wonder of nature at night.” To sign up and to learn more,
