Great Music For A Great Cause Enjoy two hours of great jazz and help the street children of Quito, Ecuador at the same time. The concert takes place from 7:30 to 9:30 on Saturday, November 3 at the South Acton Congregational Church, 35 School Street, Acton near the South Acton railroad station. Proceeds support UBECI (United to Benefit Ecuadorian Children International) whose mission is to travel to open air markets, educate young market children there and enroll them in school, giving them hope for a brighter literate future. Jeff first volunteered with UBECI in 2010 and was so taken with the project that he commited to returning every year. Middlesex CC At Bedford Campus Open House Middlesex Community College will host a Bedford Campus Open House at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, in the Bedford Campus Center, 591 Springs Road. “Our annual fall Open House gives students an opportunity to learn about everything Middlesex has to offer,” said Jillian Freitas-Haley, Director of Admissions. Crop Walk For The Hungry The 38th annual Concord Area CROP Walk for the Hungry will be held Sunday, October 21, at First Parish in Concord, 20

Lexington Road, starting at 1:30 p.m. with music by ConcordCarlisle High School Pep Band. At 2:15 p.m. volunteers will join in the two and one-quarter mile route across the Old North Bridge and down Lowell Street to the Milldam. During the pre-Walk ceremony, Concord residents Carl and Carol Miller will be presented the Frank Bradshaw Award for their twenty-five years of leadership and service. Involved with Concord CROP Walk since its founding in 1980, Carl Miller assumed leadership in 1986. With the help of a task force of volunteers from Trinitarian Congregational Church, he gathered an ecumenical Board of Directors from churches in Concord, Acton and Sudbury. Concord Area CROP Walk under Carl Miller’s leadership grew from three faith-organization sponsors with eighty walkers to thirty congregations from nine towns and 300+ walkers each year. Concord CROP Walk Board of Directors also served as a catalyst in helping early organizers to develop the Open Table weekly supper program. Since his retirement in 2015, Carl continues to walk and raise funds for the hungry. Carl also founded and led the Advocacy Network to End Family Homelessness until his retirement. action unlimited school nurse in Concord Public Schools and an ombudsman for nursing home patients, has served as Concord CROP Walk’s official nurse for the past twenty-five years, providing personal care and rides to walkers in need. For the past ten years, she has also led the holiday gift project of Concord Prison Outreach. Last year, 250 walkers from Concord and nine neighboring towns raised $40,031, bringing the total Concord Area CROP Walk funds raised to $1,110,000. The CROP program was begun by Church World Service in 1946 to provide food, clothing and medical supplies to war-torn Europe and Asia. Seventy-five percent of funds raised by the Concord Area CROP Walk help fund CWS programs to fight the root causes of hunger and provide emergency response to disasters in the United States and worldwide. Ft. Devens Museum’s Annual Miniature Game Day Have you ever wondered if you could rewrite history? Go back in time and change the whole direction of a war? Come to Fort Devens Museum on Saturday, October 20th, and join in one (or all!) miniature wargames depicting different battles from world history and fantasy and see how your careful moves might affect the outcomes! The games will be held from 10 AM to 3 PM and players of all ages are welcome to watch and join in throughout the day. There will be different games being played concurrently, many with handcrafted soldiers and detailed battleground terrain. The games include “Tale of the Tentacles: Secret Battles of WWII;” “Save Us, Lt. Harley (1895 Chitral Campaign);” a World War II Naval game; and a World War I trench warfare game. It’s a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in both historical military events and today’s realm of miniature gaming. entrance to Sleepy Hollow on Bedford Street at 7:45 a.m. The Concord Minutemen, Concord Independent Battery, Veterans and Military Representatives and several musical and community groups will take part in the parade and ceremony. The Flag Retirement Ceremony is traditionally held each year on Veterans’ Day and provides Concordians with the opportunity to retire their worn American Flags in a respectful and appropriate manner. The ceremony was established in 1965, 53 years ago this year, by James Carroll, Dr. Francis McDonald, Bernard Rushe, Former Fire Department Chief Thomas Tombeno, and Clark McClevin. This group of Concord residents, and the town at large, felt that worn, torn and/or faded flags, left in place through the fall and winter months, honored neither our nation’s colors nor our departed veterans. Therefore, the Town decided that each year, on Veterans’ Day, worn American flags would be retired in an appropriate manner at this ceremony. Concord citizens are encouraged to drop off any worn flags to be retired at the Concord Fire Department, Concord Town Hall, or the Concord and West Concord Post Offices. The Public Ceremonies and Celebrations Committee will collect all flags

on Tuesday, November 7th so that Concord Scouts can prepare the flags for retirement prior to the Veterans’ Day ceremony. This year, the committee is incorporating military uniforms to be properly retired. Uniforms should be neatly folded and delivered in person on the day of the ceremony, in an effort to keep a list of those who are retiring their own or a family member’s military uniforms. The Public Ceremonies and Celebrations Committee can be reached at cpccc@concordma. gov for further questions about the flag retirement ceremony or other town events.
