Assabet Metal Fabrication Students Attend Fitchburg Forge There’s a slight chill in the air, and this weekend, the skies were filled with sun rays, and temps in the 60’s but New England trees are proudly showcasing their true colors, the pumpkins are beginning to be picked and will soon be placed on New England’s door steps, Halloween is not far away, and the students from Assabet Valley School are thrilled that it’s Autumn and Autumn means it’s time to be moving hot iron up in Fitchburg, Massachusetts. Yesterday, the students arrived

saturday, october 13, 2018

at Assabet’s Metal Fabrication shop much before the sun has risen, and still with sleep in their eyes, only to load up a school van and a flatbed truck with heavy tools, shop equipment, and iron bars before 6: 30 am, then driving up to Fitchburg’s 15th Annual Blacksmith Competition hosted by Achla Iron Designs located in Fitchburg. Well it was a quick stop to a local coffee shop to fuel up at sunrise, then onto what the students have been anticipating for weeks, the Forging competition. As we arrived on location, the students quickly unloaded the equipment & tools and set up their stations while on standby and poised and ready to go. As the instructions

were passed along to each competitor and then bell rang out to begin the contest. The students went right to work and I mean work. It was nonstop action with such a beehive of energy for each forging session. In all, there were three sessions for the event, which included one hour periods for session one and two and then the last session was a two hour period. At the end of the day, students walked away with dirty hands, tired feet, and wet heads, several Assabet Vocational School students won ribbons with cash prizes. Elan Cannon of Maynard, Nathan Murphy of Hudson and Jose M. Morales of Marlborough; swept overall for Assabet. It was a proud moment for all who participated and a great sense of accomplishment.

Children and adolescents often struggle with a wide range of emotional and behavioral disturbances such as withdrawal from friends, school avoidance or sudden change in grades. Running away, defiance toward authority at home and in school, and depression, eating disorders, abuse of alcohol and drugs, attachment issues and self-harming. NAMI MASS, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, Massachusetts along with NAMI Central Middlesex affiliate are offering an educational program – “NAMI Basics”, specially designed for parents and other caregivers of adolescents and children living with emotional or behavioral challenges recognized before the age of 14. The course is taught by trained family volunteer teachers who themselves are parents/caregivers of children living with emotional difficulties. This structure creates an intimacy that few programs possess and consequently, a program now whose capacities are unparalleled. It is an evidenced based program and recognized across the country. The BASICS program runs for six consecutive weeks each class lasting 2 ½ hours. There is no cost to participants and the materials are provided by NAMI. The programs goal is to provide the fundamentals of caring for, you, your family and your child with the emotional difficulties. Up to date current information on common

action unlimited for the safety and lives of people around the world. National Refugee Shabbat 2018 is a moment that brings together congregations from around the country by creating a Shabbat experience dedicated to refugees. This will be an opportunity to deepen our understanding of today’s global refugee crisis, connect with the Jewish movement for refugees, commit (or recommit) to taking action, and launch new efforts in aiding refugees. This special service will include music, and personal accounts from a detainee, an immigration attorney, and members of the congregation. This event is free and open to the public Founded in 1974 in Sudbury, Mass., Congregation B’nai Torah is one of the most innovative Jewish experiences in MetroWest. The congregation emphasizes a fun and connected community, lifelong learning from its unique and convenient one-day-a-week Hebrew school through adult education, and a personal relationship with the rabbi. B’nai Torah is a friendly and inclusive congregation, where people brought up in different branches of Judaism

worship together, and where interfaith and non-Jewish family members are included completely and comfortably. Our Reform Jewish congregation supports

It is a chance to come together to celebrate her short but giving life. Michaella was a 2010 graduate of Hudson High School where she was a honor roll student and athlete. She was a sophomore at the University of Maryland majoring in Public Health when she passed away. She had a passion for helping others, which was reflected in her involvement with Peer Mediation, tutoring inner city children in Washington DC

Blood Donation Opportunities October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month – the perfect time to give blood or platelets to support cancer patients and others. Anna Gwinnup, a loving wife, mother and grandmother, was diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer in September 2017. Within weeks, it advanced to stage 2, forcing her to undergo a double mastectomy, chemotherapy and multiple surgeries, which required blood products. Though she was a blood donor prior to her diagnosis, Gwinnup now has a new passion for the cause. “I want to raise awareness about the need for blood to treat cancer,” she said. Cancer patients may need red blood cell or platelet transfusions during chemotherapy, surgery or treatment for complications. Donors of all blood types are needed to help ensure a sufficient supply for patients this fall, espe-

cially after Hurricane Florence and subsequent flooding forced the cancellation of more than 6,000 blood and platelet donations last month. Make an appointment to donate blood by downloading the free American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). As a thank-you, those who come to donate blood or platelets in October will automatically be entered to win one of five $500 gift cards redeemable at hundreds of merchants. Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Please Donate To Fresh Start Furniture Bank Fresh Start Furniture Bank is seeking volunteers and donations of furniture and household goods. We are a volunteer run charity in Hudson that provides furniture, linens and housewares to qualified Massachusetts residents in need, free of charge. We depend on your donations to provide for hundreds of families from across the state each year, as they transition to new apartments from shelters or treatment centers, relocate due to domestic violence or natural disaster or fire, return from active duty overseas, or immigrate to the US, among many other reasons. And we rely on volunteers to load, unload, sort, clean, stock and distribute these items. As the cold weather approaches, we are especially in need of warm blankets and comforters, as well as sheet sets. We always need basic kitchen items such as pots and pans, utensils (cooking and eating), sets of drinking glasses, dishes, and basic appliances such as microwaves and toasters. We also always need furniture, as we see as many as 10 families in a day taking furniture by the truckload. Additionally, we would be grateful for new packing materials (bubble wrap) and new bed pillows, or cash

You can leave a message at 508-4852080 to see when we will be in your area (within 20 minutes of our location) picking up larger furniture (as identified on our website). We ask that you bring your smaller items and furniture to us, during business hours only please. We accept items in good,

Just look for our sign on the street and “OPEN” flag at our doors.. We are open Tuesdays and Thursdays 10-12, and Saturdays 9-12. Our greatest need for volunteers is on Saturdays and Thursdays. We are a very friendly group and welcome new volunteers who can donate as few as 3 hours a month. It’s not work - it’s fun! And the gratefulness of our clients is priceless.
