Ed McGuirk, a Massachusetts based photographer, whose work focuses on the landscape, wildlife and natural beauty of New England. McGuirk will present “Artistic and Abstract Nature Photography”. Abstract images generally rely on the strong use of lines, curves, shapes, colors, patterns and texture. This presentation discusses how to utilize these elements as they apply to abstract photography. The program covers creative techniques such as Soft Focus, In-Camera Movement, and Multiple Exposures that allow a photographer to create more painterly-type images. Ed McGuirk, a founding
member and past president of the Boston West Photographic Society, belongs to the Sudbury Valley Nature Photographers and the Massachusetts Camera Naturalists. Photographic honors for McGuirk include the Videtta Award for the top scoring New England entrant at the Lynn International Salon, Best Wildlife image at the George Glennie Nature Salon, and a New England Camera Club Council Nature Image of the Year. Acton Historical Society Holiday Open House The Acton Historical Society will hold a festive two-day open house on Saturday and Sunday, December 2-3, from 1 to 4:00 p.m. featuring – what else? – candy! – and candy-making. An exhibit on “Acton’s Sweet Tooth—Then and Now” will include a display on Acton’s rich history of candy making, from Loraine’s Candies in the 1920s to the Happy Chocolatier of today. Also on exhibit will be the collection of Fanny Farmer candy tins of Leon Poirier, who will speak on the History of

The Imago School Soccer Season Report This fall of 2017, the Imago soccer team went undefeated for the first time in many years! The season was a wonderful and bonding experience. For the duration of the season, our team competed with three different schools, whose soccer teams are voluntary, with often daily practice; Imago plays every student

and has a weekly practice. The first match took place at the Fowler School against Veritas Christian Academy. This was only our third time on the field together as a team. Surprisingly our team largely controlled the game, but the result was a draw, 3-3. Though our players were not confident in their ability and were only beginning to develop a feel for the fundamentals of the game, we were encouraged

by our performance and trained more intensely the following few weeks. On October 13, we challenged Lexington Christian Academy’s team. Our team absolutely dominated the game! Each player had improved so greatly throughout the preceding month that we were starting to operate as team. Because of the intense effort and focus of every individual, we held formation, positioned ourselves to create a strong momentum, and most importantly remained composed. Subsequently our passes were
complete and players even began to make runs, though we did not score. Midway through the second half, however, our opponent was fouled in the box and capitalized on the penalty. Yet our team only increased the pressure, never once hanging heads. That response is one of the most crucial aspects to victory. Late in the game, Imago’s determination paid off: we scored, again ending in a tie. On November 1, we produced what we had been looking for! Despite that fact, we possessed the ball most of the first half and generated many more chances than they. The score, however, was a frustrating 2-2 at halftime. After a quick talk from our coach and a short rest, we returned to the field. It was then the team really came together. We contained the play on their half for most of the remaining time. We possessed the ball, conducting the flow of the game and keeping the other team chasing after the ball, which became their only option. Runs and wellplaced balls created even more chances. Finally we struck with precision in the final third of the field and we scored three more goals, leaving with our first win of the season! Our soccer season helped us to build a team mentality. We found we were willing to sacrifice for our teammates, work hard for them, and have their backs. Together we fought to be the best and recovered after setbacks, constantly advancing. As a team, we won graciously. These values apply not only to

displayed tremendous growth. Our two separate grades formed a bond and established friendships and memories. All who participated in the experience will remember it as a highlight of this year. Peter Christensen is an 8th grader at The Imago School and co-captain of the upper school’s soccer team. Imago is an independent Christian school in the classical tradition offering excel-
athletics, but to everyday life. Although we only practiced a mere handful of times and played in a total of three games, we had formed a team. And a good team at that! Our seventh and eighth grade classes were asked to step out of their comfort zones, but by the end of the season, all wished it could have been extended. The Spellman Museum of Stamps & Postal History at Regis College in Weston is holding its annual Holiday Family Day on Saturday, December 9 from 11:00 until 4:00. Children and adults can decorate Christmas tree ornaments and make holiday gifts with stamps from around the world. There will be a door prize of $100 worth of United States postage. stamps In addition, visitors can do holiday stamp hunts and games, create their own holiday stamp designs, make stamp mosaics and see displays of Christmas stamps from the USA and worldwide. Volunteers will demonstrate how to make holiday cards and unique envelopes. Free postage using vintage Christmas stamps will be available to mail the cards. Children can write their letters to Santa Claus and post them in the Museum’s North Pole mailbox. A unique North Pole museum cancellation will be added to all letters and Santa has told the museum he will write back. Children can also have their

picture taken and make it into a special postage stamp. Tips about how to start a stamp collection will be offered and each child can make a free collection of holiday stamps to take home as well as a free packet of stamps. Refreshments will be served. Appointments can also be made that day for people to bring in their collections for an evaluation for a fee.
