Saturday, December 9th 1pm-4pm Littleton Animal Hospital 29 King St, Littleton, MA 01460 Littleton Animal Hospital is excited to be hosting a fundraiser and open house for Littleton’s finest K9 Patrol team! Please join us in our goal to raise $2,500 to purchase a new radio for Vojak’s cruiser! Vojak’s current radio was a hand-me-down from the Chief but we think it is time for this outstanding team to get an upgrade! I didn’t have a good start in life. Unfortunately, I came from a hoarding situation and didn’t get much of anything. Although I was nervous when I got rescued, I was excited to see that I get fed every day at the shelter. Not to mention that the volunteers pet me and smile at me too. It sure does make me feel loved. I’m still a little on the shy side and tend to be a come-see-me cat. Belinda is my buddy and you’ll always see us together. Please be sure to have another cat or adopt Belinda with me and let us have a chance of having a good life.

deduction or itemizing deductions and you should select whichever results in a higher amount. Nearly two-thirds of taxpayers claim the standard deduction, according to TaxACT spokesperson Jessi Dolmage. Standard Deductions Standard deduction amounts are adjusted for inflation each year, vary by filing status and are higher for those 65 and older or legally blind. For 2012 federal tax returns due April 15, 2013, standard deduction amounts are: $5,950 for single or married filing separately $11,900 for married filing jointly and qualifying widows(ers) $8,700 for head of household. Itemized Deductions When you itemize deductions, you list them all separately and only certain spending qualifies. Itemized deductions may include mortgage interest, state and local taxes, charitable gifts, unreimbursed employee expenses, uninsured casualty or theft losses and miscellaneous. Some miscellaneous deductions must exceed 2 percent of your adjusted gross income and unreimbursed medical and dental costs must exceed 7.5 percent of it.

If a married couple files separately and one spouse claims the standard deduction, the other must also claim the standard deduction. Conversely, if one spouse itemizes deductions, the other must also itemize. Some deductions can be claimed regardless of whether you itemize or claim the standard deduction. Often referred to as “above-the-line” deductions because they are deducted from gross income, these include traditional IRA contributions, student loan interest, alimony payments, moving expenses and a portion of your self-employment tax (if applicable). Dolmage suggests using an online or downloadable tax preparation solution to eliminate the guesswork involved with calculating whether the standard deduction or itemizing is more beneficial. “The program asks simple questions to help you determine if you qualify for the various deductions and other tax breaks. It then does the math for

you and lets you know if you benefit more from the standard deduction or by itemizing.” File Free - To help make calculating your deductions easy, TaxACT, the nation’s secondlargest digital tax preparation provider, offers free federal tax returns. TaxACT Free Federal Edition provides step-by-step guidance for simple and complicated tax situations, plus all e-fileable forms, including those necessary for itemizing. You can find more information about standard and itemized deductions in IRS Publication 501 at www.irs.gov. Five Everyday Reasons You Need To Know Math (NAPSI)—Many people may shy away from the subject of math, but it is important to understand math as it plays an instrumental role in making good financial decisions. A new University of Phoenix® survey found that 28 percent of respondents reported they were not confident that their current math skills are strong enough to succeed in planning for retirement and 24 percent stated they are not confident in their skills to succeed in understanding tuition assistance and save or pay for college. Additionally, 35 percent are not confident that their math skills were solid enough to start a business. Susan Hadley, Ph.D., program dean for general education at University of Phoenix, says that people could be taking a financial hit as a result of not understanding basic math and the role it plays in financial decision making. “Having a foundational knowledge of math helps people make informed purchases for major

investments and expenses as well as everyday spending and saving decisions,” Dr. Hadley said. “Being comfortable with math is necessary and deeply relevant to our personal and professional lives. As a result, we’ve gone to great lengths to incorporate math into our undergraduate programs as it relates to everyday financial decisions.” Dr. Hadley provides financial tips for areas where math skills are important: 1. Building a budget— A monthly budget helps allot money for fixed expenses like mortgage payments as well as how to plan for expenses that may vary from month to month, such as groceries. Also knowing how much to dedicate each month for long-term savings is helpful. Having this information can set the stage for making wise spending choices. 2. Renting vs. buying a home—There is no one-size-fitsall answer on whether to purchase a home or rent. Research the real estate market in the area where you want to live. Determine the mortgage or rent payment and the impact both options have on your lifestyle

Sudoku

Fun By The Numbers Like puzzles? Then you’ll love sudoku. This mind-bending puzzle will have you hooked from the moment you square off, so sharpen your pencil and put your sudoku savvy to the test!

Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

action unlimited and short- and long-term financial goals. Review your budget to understand the financial implications of each choice. 3. Buying a car—People often assume that a vehicle is an investment. However, vehicles quickly depreciate. Be mindful of how much you are able to spend, financing options and, if you decide to take a loan to make the purchase, what you will pay in interest over the life of the loan. 4. Saving for college tuition— Start planning early if you intend to send your child to college and will assume responsibility for the cost or if you’re planning on going back to school yourself. Knowing the tuition breakdown per semester, costs for materials and living expenses will help you factor them into your monthly budget and savings goals. Searching for scholarship and grant opportunities and researching student loan options will help with making sure you don’t overleverage and can repay those loans in full and on time. 5. Planning for retirement— Review your budget regularly and determine what percentage of each paycheck you can contribute to a 401(k) or individual retirement account (IRA) to save for retirement. When determining the best strategy for building your retirement savings, consult a financial adviser. It’s Never Too Late Whether for business decisions or everyday life, it’s never too late to learn new things or refresh what you’ve already learned. Consider taking a course that reviews mathematical concepts, economics, accounting

and finance applications for everyday life. Being comfortable with math will help you determine how you can better allocate your money to make it work for you while making better-informed decisions.

How Popcorn Pops The folklore of some Native American tribes told of spirits who lived inside each kernel of popcorn. The spirits were quiet and content to live on their own -- but grew angry if their houses were heated. The hotter their homes became, the angrier they’d get -- shaking the kernels until the heat was too much.

Finally they would burst out of their homes and into the air as a disgruntled puff of steam. Each kernel of popcorn does contain a small drop of water stored inside a circle of soft starch. (That’s why popcorn needs to contain 13.5 percent to 14 percent moisture.) The soft starch is surrounded by the kernel’s hard outer surface. As the kernel heats up, the water begins to expand, and

pressure builds against the hard starch. Eventually, this hard surface gives way, causing the popcorn to explode. As it explodes, the soft starch inside the popcorn becomes inflated and bursts, turning the kernel inside out. The steam inside the kernel is released, and the popcorn is popped!

More Patients Struggling To Pay For Their Medicines Expanded Assistance Programs Can Keep Needed Medicines In Reach (NAPSI)-In today’s difficult economic times, with unemployment levels near 10 percent and nearly 50 million Americans without insurance, many people in need are forced to make decisions on whether to pay for essentials, such as food and utilities, or their prescription medicines. For patients with chronic conditions such as diabetes or asthma, this can leave them without treatment that is critical to their health and well-being. However, many do not realize that they may qualify for patient assistance programs that can provide them with free medications. For more than 50 years, Merck has helped millions of Americans gain access to its medicines and vaccines. Recently, Merck significantly expanded the number of medicines available through its Merck Helps™ patient assistance programs, as well as increased the income limit so even more people are eligible—including families of four earning up to $88,200 annually. Unfortunately, awareness of these programs is low, yet the need remains great. A recent survey, conducted by Harris Interactive on behalf of Merck+, found that while 32 percent of U.S. adults are potentially eligible for patient assistance programs, 79 percent of those unemployed and uninsured are somewhat or not at all aware that such programs exist. To help increase awareness, Merck has provided a grant to NeedyMeds, a nonprofit organization that makes information about these programs available to people in need. “People should always have access to the prescription medicines they need, even if they don’t have insurance. We know that many patients who are eligible for these programs aren’t taking advantage of them—because

action unlimited awareness is low, particularly among those who are most in need,” said Richard Sagall, M.D., co-founder of NeedyMeds. “That’s why we’re so pleased to partner with Merck to help further raise awareness.” With the Merck Helps programs, there are no application fees, no co-payments and a simple enrollment process. Many medicines can be delivered to a patient’s home or doctor’s office at no charge. Patients in need of information should visit www. MerckHelps.com or call (800) PAP-5400. + This telephone survey was conducted by Harris Interactive on behalf of Merck from August 20 to 23, 2010 among 2,012 U.S. adults of whom 549 do not have any prescription drug benefits and 131 do not have any prescription drug benefits and are not employed.

Getting Banks To Show You The Money (NAPSI)-Although it’s not easy for entrepreneurs to get loans these days, they remain a driving force in the U.S. economy. According to the U.S.

Small Business Administration (SBA), there are approximately 24 million small businesses in this country and they create 65 percent of new jobs. Fortunately, financing is still available, even during these challenging economic times. Here are a few tips for small business owners seeking loans to expand their companies. 1. Manage your credit. For most companies with revenue under $50 million, the owner’s personal credit score is the company’s credit score. That score is weighed heavily when banks evaluate loan applications, so manage your personal credit wisely. 2. Update your business plan. A detailed business plan that explains how you expect your business to grow, including realistic projections for revenues, expenses and cash flow, is critical. You must also be ready to explain how the loan would be used to expand your business. 3. Pay off small debts. Banks will examine your outstanding obligations. It’s important to present a strong balance sheet. Pay off as many small debts as possible so your business doesn’t

space,” she explained. “We were seeking a conventional loan, but the bank took time to understand our business and showed us the advantages of an SBA loan, including a smaller down payment, a longer term and great rates. Before long, we were moving to a bigger space!” Sooner or later, many small businesses need loans. To increase your chances of securing a loan, put yourself on the other side of the desk for a moment. If a business owner asked you for a loan, what would you want to know? If you start there and follow a few simple tips, you may soon find your small business doing big things! appear overextended and your cash flow is maximized. 4. Go to the right bank. Different banks have different specialties. For instance, Bank of the West works closely with the SBA to make money available for small businesses, including loans for commercial real estate, construction and equipment. Banks with an expertise in the type of loan you need can go the extra mile to get the deal done. 5. Address the issue of risk. There is no business without risk. If you are not prepared to discuss this issue, bankers will assume you haven’t thought about it. Lenders want to know you have planned for a variety of major risks. Debra Sears Bergeson runs Skyline Displays with her husband Roger. Their company designs tradeshow exhibits and they recently approached Bank of the West about financing an expansion. “We needed more

action unlimited mate IRS hardship programs. The truth is that most taxpayers don’t qualify for such programs, the companies don’t settle the tax debt and, in many cases, don’t even send the necessary paperwork to the IRS. Adding insult to injury, some of these companies don’t provide refunds and leave people even further in debt. Some taxpayers who filed complaints with the FTC reported that, after signing up with some of these companies and paying thousands of dollars in up-front fees, the companies took more of their money by making unauthorized charges to their credit cards or withdrawals from their bank accounts. Avoiding Tax Relief Scams (NAPSI)-If you owe back taxes and don’t know how you will pay the IRS, it may seem like a company that promises to significantly reduce your tax bill has the answer to your problems. Not so fast. You could end up deeper in debt. According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation’s consumer protection agency, tax relief companies use the radio, TV and Internet to advertise help for taxpayers in distress. These companies claim that for an up-front fee, which can be thousands of dollars, they can reduce or even eliminate your tax debts and stop back-tax collection by applying for legiti-
