Alla Breve will play Christmas, winter solstice, and holiday music throughout the ornament-making service. New Class Through Lincoln-Sudbury Adult Ed January-February 2018 Thursday Evenings, 7:00 9:00 PM Bridge Play: Practice Makes Perfect!

Lincoln-Sudbury Adult Ed is offering a special six-week program in January & February 2018 to play Bridge and practice your skills with a teacher’s guidance. Bridge players of all abilities are welcome. Muggsie Rocco, a successful tournament player and bridge teacher, will give a brief mini-lesson or “bridge tip” each week, then stay while you play to answer questions as you go. Scoring will be Chicago style and all tables will play the same pre-arranged but randomly dealt hands. This is a fantastic opportunity for newer players to gain some valuable practice under the guidance of a seasoned player/teacher. More experienced players are also invited to play in a friendly, nopressure setting with new friends and old; ask questions; and gain knowledge of modern bridge techniques. To enroll, you should already know the fundamentals of bridge, as you will launch right into playing in Week #1. Bring a partner if you have one; singles are welcome and will be paired up in class. Meets in the LSHS Library. About the teacher: Muggsie Rocco learned bridge as a child, and has played ever since. In 2014 she started playing competitively in local, regional, and national tournaments. Her background in professional training enhances her teaching style, as

Auditions For Tennessee Williams’s ‘Summer And Smoke’ Ghost Light Players of MetroWest will be holding auditions this January for their spring 2018 production of ‘Summer and Smoke’. One of Tennessee Williams’s early and most critically acclaimed works, ‘Summer and Smoke’ is a love story that reaches across time and space into the core of human nature. Directed by Alecia Thomas and produced by Krisha Maynard, the story follows a high-strung minister’s daughter, and the wild young doctor who is her nextdoor neighbor. The two explore the many facets of love – romantic, physical, and spiritual. Ghost Light recognizes and celebrates the value of diversity in our art and in our lives, and would like in particular to encourage artists of color to consider auditioning. The play’s characters include

Seniors: Make Eye Care Part Of Your Wellness Routine (NAPSI)—Regular checkups at the doctor’s office are a familiar routine for most people: blood pressure checks, blood tests and health history questions. There’s something else you should know, however: Your overall health can affect your eyes.

action unlimited This is why ophthalmologists—physicians who specialize in medical and surgical eye care—urge people to take a similar wellness approach when it comes to the health of their eyes. By age 65, one in three Americans has some form of age-related, vision-limiting eye disease such as glaucoma or macular degeneration. The good news is, treating these conditions can slow or prevent vision loss. The key to a diagnosis is a medical eye examination by an ophthalmologist who can help keep your eyes functioning well throughout your life. In general, the American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends that people age 65 or older get a comprehensive medical eye exam every one to two years, regardless of whether they experience any symptoms. Eye Exam or Glaucoma Exam, Often At No Cost The American Academy of Ophthalmology’s unique EyeCare America program helps medically underserved seniors access sight-saving eye care. The program offers two services: a comprehensive medical eye exam for eligible seniors and

a glaucoma exam for individuals who are determined to be at increased risk based on their age, race and glaucoma family history. Each service has slightly different eligibility requirements. Under the Seniors program, those eligible will be matched with a nearby volunteer ophthalmologist who will provide a medical eye exam and up to one year of follow-up care for any disease diagnosed at the initial exam, often at no out-of-pocket cost. To be eligible for the Seniors program, you must: • Be a U.S. citizen or legal resident • Be age 65 or older • Not belong to an HMO or have eye care benefits through the VA • Have not seen an ophthalmologist in three or more years. The Glaucoma program provides a glaucoma eye exam at no cost to those who are eligible and uninsured. Glaucoma testing is especially important because the condition can sneak up on you, worsening over time without symptoms. Glaucoma is the leading cause of blindness in people over age 60.

coma, determined by age, race and family history of glaucoma. EyeCare America is co-sponsored by the Knights Templar Eye Foundation, Inc., with additional support provided by Alcon.

The condition can respond well to treatment, especially when diagnosed early. Once thought to be a lighting technology only for early adopters willing to pay top dollar, LED bulbs are now a possibility for the average consumer, with prices hovering around $2 a bulb or less in many areas. Top Five Tips For Buying Safe Toys This Holiday Season by Joan Lawrence (NAPSI)—This holiday season, you can pick out toys that are both fun and safe with these simple tips: 1. Follow the age guidance and other safety information on toy packaging. The age grading isn’t about how smart a child is—it’s based on the developmental abilities of children at a given age and the specific features of the toy.

can save households $50 to $100 per year in utility costs. LED bulbs are expected to see widespread adoption by 2020 in significant part because of utility programs continuing to rebate the bulbs and educate consumers about the energy-efficient options that are available. The Problem Despite the tremendous savings opportunity, many Americans have yet to experience the LED difference in their own homes. Less than 30 percent of U.S. light bulb sales in 2016 were LED, and according to a report by the business research firm ORC International, most consumers have little knowledge about the various light bulb options available to them. The average American home has approximately 50 light sockets, and about 60 percent of them still contain an inefficient bulb. So the opportunities for energy savings are huge. It’s important to know that all toys sold in the U.S., no matter where they’re made, are subject to strict federal safety laws and standards. 4. Shop at a retailer you know and trust. Store staff at established businesses will be knowledgeable about age-appropriate toys. At garage sales, secondhand stores or temporary “pop-up” retailers, sellers may not know about the latest safety information and certified products—and may not be around should an issue arise later on. 5. Visit PlaySafe.org for more safety advice. Once the gifts are unwrapped, visit www.PlaySafe. org for tons of advice on toys and play. 2. Choose a toy that matches your child’s age and interests. The perfect toys are the ones that are right for your children. If a toy is too advanced, they’ll become frustrated, and if it’s too simple, they’ll get bored. Providing kids with age-appropriate playthings will help them stay safe and reap the full benefits of playtime. 3. Avoid toys with small parts for kids under 3. Items around the home that have small parts are fine for older kids but can pose a choking hazard for children under 3 (or kids who still mouth objects). Toys with small parts have a warning label on the packaging, so keep a careful eye out as you shop.

Depending on the resources we have on hand, we can usually provide between $300 and $800 to the needy family. Our volunteers pay for postage and all other costs, so we are able to give away 100% of the money we receive. Myths And Facts: Clearing Up A Few Misconceptions About Eye Exams (NAPSI)—People are constantly reminded to eat right and exercise to stay healthy. But what about eye health? Dozens of eye diseases and conditions, such as diabetes, high blood pressure and some cancers, can be diagnosed and detected during a simple eye exam. This is because the eye is actually part of the nervous system. An eye physician can detect abnormalities in the fine blood vessels at the back of the eye before they’re seen in other parts of the body. Trouble spotted in the eye may signal health-related changes that may otherwise go undetected. Eye Health Truths Here are the facts on a few common myths about eye exams: • Myth: Eye exams only provide a prescription for eyeglasses. • Fact: There are two different types of eye examinations: 1. A comprehensive medical eye exam is typically performed by an ophthalmologist, a physician who specializes in medical and surgical eye care. Your ophthalmologist will dilate your eyes with drops. This lets him or her thoroughly examine your retina and optic nerve, located at the back of your eye, for signs of damage from disease. 2. A routine eye exam determines whether you need glasses or contact lenses to see clearly. You will be asked to read a standardized chart to determine how well you see at different distances. This exam is typically performed by an optometrist. • Myth: An eye exam is unnecessary unless you have a vision problem. • Fact: Don’t wait to notice a vision problem before you get

an eye exam. Some eye diseases and conditions have no early warning signs until vision is lost. If they’re detected early, however, vision can usually be saved. Eye Exam Recommendations The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends that people get a baseline eye examination at age 40, the time when early signs of disease or changes in vision may occur. This exam is just as important as a baseline screening for diabetes or certain cancers. If you’re age 65 or older, have your eyes checked every year or two for signs of age-related eye diseases such as cataracts, macular degeneration, and glaucoma. Sight-Saving Care If you are 65 or older and worry about the cost of an exam, the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s EyeCare America program may be able to help. EyeCare America provides medical eye exams, often at no out-of-pocket cost, to eligible people through a network of approximately 6,000 volunteer ophthalmologists. Nearly 2 million people have been helped through EyeCare America’s two programs. The Seniors program connects eligible seniors with a volunteer ophthalmologist for a medical eye exam at no out-ofpocket cost for up to one year, while the Glaucoma program offers a glaucoma eye exam to eligible individuals who are at increased risk for glaucoma, determined by their age, race, and family history. Program Eligibility: Seniors Program: • U.S. citizen or legal resident • Age 65 or older • Not belong to an HMO or have eye care benefits through the VA • Not seen an ophthalmologist in three or more years Glaucoma Program: • U.S. citizen or legal resident • Not belong to an HMO or

Adam I didn’t have a good start in life. Unfortunately, I came from a hoarding situation and didn’t get much of anything. Although I was nervous when I got rescued, I was excited to see that I get fed every day at the shelter. Not to mention that the volunteers pet me and smile at me too. It sure does make me feel loved. I’m still a little on the shy side and tend to be a come-see-me cat. Belinda is my buddy and you’ll always see us together. Five Steps To A “Greener” Car (NAPSI)-Protecting the environment can take you placesespecially if you do your part by making sure your car is as “green,” or environmentally friendly, as possible. Every vehicle owner can take some preventative maintenance steps to have a greener car. By following these five simple steps from the Car Care Council, you can help protect the environment by improving gas mileage, which in turn saves money at the pump. 1. Keep your car properly tuned for optimum performance. A well-tuned engine delivers the best balance of power and fuel economy and produces the lowest level of emissions. A 21st Century tune-up for modern vehicles includes the following system checks: battery, charging and starting; engine mechanical; power-train control (including onboard diagnostic checks); fuel; ignition; and emissions. 2. Regularly check and replace dirty air filters. An air filter that is clogged with dirt, dust and bugs chokes off the air and creates a “rich” mixture-too much

gas being burned for the amount of air -that wastes gas and causes the engine to lose power. 3. Check the spark plugsif they haven’t already been checked as part of the tune-upand replace if necessary. A vehicle can have four, six or eight spark plugs, which fire as many as 3 million times every 1,000 miles. This results in a lot of heat, electrical and chemical erosion. A dirty spark plug also causes misfiring, which wastes fuel. 4. Maintain the cooling system of your vehicle. A cooling system thermostat that causes the engine to run too cold will lower the fuel efficiency of a car by as much as one or two mpg. There are also improved radiator caps on the market today that allow the cooling system to operate at a higher temperature before boiling over, increasing the system’s efficiency and reducing emissions. 5. Get a free copy of the “Car Care Guide.” The last step toward keeping a green car is to properly maintain and repair your car as outlined in the Car Care Council’s “Car Care Guide.” The guide helps drivers under-

Fun By The Numbers Like puzzles? Then you’ll love sudoku. This mind-bending puzzle will have you hooked from the moment you square off, so sharpen your pencil and put your sudoku savvy to the test!

Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Looking To Develop Your Girl’s Leadership Skills? Try Girl Scouts (NAPSI)—If you’re ever the parent or grandparent of a girl, recent research from the University of Essex in England may provide some surprising but important information: Girls are more willing to take risks, speak up, and take on leadership roles when in single-gender environments. In the study, researchers found that when in all-girl groups, female students had a 7.5 percent boost in their average marks. Other studies support the finding that single-gender environments provide more opportunities for girls to build confidence and have greater academic and life success, and that girls in single-gender environments are more likely to explore and pursue STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) subjects. At a time when 81 percent of American voters think preparing girls for leadership roles should be a national priority, Girl Scouts of the USA—the preeminent leadership development organization for girls—offers girls

even more opportunities to learn skills and empower themselves with the experiences they need to succeed in life. And as the Girl Scout Research Institute (GSRI) releases new findings that confirm the outstanding leadership results that Girl Scouts exhibit compared to their non−Girl Scout peers, there has never been a better time to join. Where To Turn Participating in a single-gender group activity such as Girl Scouts can help girls develop key leadership skills they need to be successful in life. New GSRI research shows, compared to their peers, Girl Scouts are more likely to: • Be leaders • Have confidence in themselves and their abilities • Act ethically and responsibly, and show concern for others • Seek challenges and learn from setbacks • Develop and maintain healthy relationships • Identify and solve problems in their communities • Take an active role in decision making • Do better in school. For over 100 years, Girl Scouts has helped girls become their best selves. Today, it’s 2.6 million strong—1.8 million girls and 800,000 adults who believe in the power of every G.I.R.L. (Go-getter, Innovator, Risk-taker, Leader)™ to change the world. Now, there’s new programming designed to build girls’ skills and encourage their interest in STEM and the outdoors. In fact, the organization has just released 23 new STEM and out-

door badges, which are two areas that girls may not otherwise be encouraged to explore. Girls can design robots and race cars, go on environmentally conscious camping trips, create algorithms, collect data, try their hand at engineering and much more. Further, the new programming is available to volunteers via a digital toolkit, which is intended to save time and make it even easier to support amazing experiences for girls. Leadership, collaboration and a commitment to personal development are the keys to creating engaged leaders, and that’s what girls gain from Girl Scouting, determined a study by Vanderbilt University’s

Helping Well Owners Keep Their Water Safe (NAPSI)—There is good news for homeowners who want to protect the safety and quality of their well water. There is a new set of information tools designed to help household well owners operate and maintain their wells to provide safe water for their families. The tools, which are being developed by the National Ground Water Association (NGWA) through assistance from the U.S. EPA, include: • A series of live webinars • A series of online lessons • A Private Well Owner tollfree hotline (855-420-9355) • A monthly Private Well Owner Tip Sheet. To access these private well owner information tools and more, visit www.WellOwner. org. Testing, Treatment And More “Household water well owners are responsible for monitoring their water quality and taking action when necessary,” said NGWA Public Awareness Director Cliff Treyens. “To help, these new information tools are designed to give well owners next steps and guide them to the help they need.” Among the specific areas covered by the new information tools are: • Water testing • Water treatment • Well maintenance • Water testing related to hydraulic fracturing • Groundwater protection • Well construction • Well flooding. Webinars On Demand The live webinars will be recorded for viewing at any time.

Both the webinars and the online lessons will be added to the collection as they are done, so well owners are advised to check periodically for new offerings. Registration links for the webinars and online lessons will be accessible through the Well Owner.org home page, where visitors can also subscribe to the free monthly Tip Sheet. The telephone hotline is operational Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Eastern Time (except national holidays). To encourage learning, the online lessons and the webinars will have a short pre-lesson/ webinar quiz and a post-lesson/ webinar quiz. Those who successfully complete the final quiz will receive a certificate of completion. “There is no replacement for certified drinking water testing labs and qualified water well system professionals in providing accurate diagnoses and remedies for water quality issues,” Treyens said. “What these tools are intended to do is arm the well owner with important basic information and direction.”

What To Expect When You’re Expecting...A Teenager (NAPSI)—Here’s good news for parents and people who’d like to be parents: You don’t have to be perfect. That’s the word from the experts at AdoptUSKids, which maintains a photolisting website to promote adoption from foster care and raises awareness of the 112,000 children and teens waiting to be adopted. With the help of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Children’s Bureau, the

Ad Council (a private, nonprofit organization with a rich history of marshaling volunteer talent from the advertising and media industries to deliver critical messages to the American public) and the KBS global advertising agency, the partner organizations created new public service announcements (PSAs) to encourage families to adopt teenagers. Facts And Figures To Consider Of the 428,000 youths under the age of 18 in the U.S. foster care system, 112,000 are currently waiting for adoptive families. Forty-three percent of all children actively photolisted on AdoptUSKids.org are ages 15 to 18, yet only 5 percent of all children adopted in 2015 were between the ages of 15 and 18 years old. Unfortunately, teens in foster care have lower adoption rates than younger children, and they often wait longer to be adopted. Adoption Facts Although many people believe adoption is always expensive, in fact, most adoptions from U.S. foster care are free. The minimal costs that can be associated with them are often reimbursable. In addition, the vast majority of youths adopted from foster care are also eligible for monthly adoption assistance. What’s more, in most instances, you’re eligible to adopt regardless of age, income, marital status or sexual orientation. You don’t need to own your own home, be wealthy, be a stay-athome parent or have a college degree to adopt. You just need to demonstrate that you can support yourself without any additional income, such as adoption assistance. “All of us—and that includes teens in foster care who are wait-

ing to be adopted—need and want families to support us and to give us the connections, relationships and sense of belonging that are so critical to our well-being,” said Jerry Milner, Associate Commissioner at the Children’s Bureau, and the Acting Commissioner for the Administration on Children, Youth and Families. “The parents and families that adopt older teens from foster care enrich their own lives while providing an incredible impact on the lives of the adopted children and teens at a time when it is needed most.” What’s Being Done To help, KBS collaborated with the authors and illustrator of the iconic “What to Expect When You’re Expecting” pregnancy books. The resulting humorous videos feature wellintentioned moms and dads attempting to give new parents of teens step-by-step parenting tutorials on such things as how to wake up your teen, how to teenproof your home, and what to do about confusing text messages, binge-watching and promposals. Learn More To see the PSAs and to learn how you can adopt a teen or help those who do, visit www. AdoptUSKids.org, for both English and Spanish information; call (888) 200-4005 for English-speaking staff or (877) 236-7831 for Spanish-speaking staff; or visit the AdoptUSKids social communities on Facebook and Twitter.
