Assabet Valley Camera Club On Wednesday, December 6, the Assabet Valley Camera Club (AVCC) is pleased to host Ed McGuirk, a Massachusetts based photographer, whose work focuses on the landscape, wildlife and natural beauty of New England. McGuirk will present “Artistic and Abstract Nature Photography”. Abstract images generally rely on the strong use of lines, curves, shapes, colors, patterns and texture. This presentation discusses how to utilize these elements as they apply to abstract photography. The program covers creative techniques such as Soft Focus, In-Camera Movement, and Multiple Exposures that allow a photographer to create more painterly-type images. Ed McGuirk, a founding member and past president of the Boston West Photographic Society, belongs to the Sudbury Valley Nature Photographers and the Massachusetts Camera Naturalists. Photographic honors for McGuirk include the Videtta Award for the top scoring New England entrant at the

Lynn International Salon, Best Wildlife image at the George Glennie Nature Salon, and a New England Camera Club Council Nature Image of the Year. Ed’s work has been published in Outdoor Photographer, The New Hampshire Wildlife Federation Magazine and other publications. Volunteers will demonstrate how to make holiday cards and unique envelopes. Free postage using vintage Christmas stamps will be available to mail the cards. Children can write their letters to Santa Claus and post them in the Museum’s North Pole mailbox. A unique North Pole museum cancellation will be added to all letters and Santa has told the museum he will write back. Children can also have their picture taken and make it into a special postage stamp. In addition to the Holiday stamp exhibit other displays include the “History of Christmas Seals,” “The History of Rural Free Delivery,” “Comics on Stamps,” ”The JFK Centennial” “Civil War Mail” “Owls on Stamps” “The Boston Post Road,” “Whales on Stamps” “Stamps from the FDR collection” and “Zeppelin Mail.” Current US holiday stamps will be on sale in the Museum’s official Post Office (It is open on Sunday as well but no packages.) Tips about how to start a stamp collection will be offered and each child can make a free collection of holiday stamps to take home as well as a free packet of stamps. Refreshments will be served. Appointments can also be made that day for people to bring in their collections for an evalua-

Ghost Light Players of MetroWest will be holding auditions this January for their spring 2018 production of ‘Summer and Smoke’. One of Tennessee Williams’s early and most critically acclaimed works, ‘Summer and Smoke’ is a love story that reaches across time and space into the core of human nature. Directed by Alecia Thomas and produced by Krisha Maynard, the story follows a high-strung minister’s daughter, and the wild young doctor who is her nextdoor neighbor. The two explore the many facets of love – romantic, physical, and spiritual. When Veterans’ Caregivers Are Left Behind (NAPSI)—Dave Riley doesn’t take a step without his wife, literally. “In the morning, he needs help putting on his shirt and his prosthetics—both his legs and arms. Then, I brush his teeth and shave him,” said Yvonne Riley, who serves as her husband’s primary caregiver. At night, Yvonne reverses that routine to get Dave into bed. Dave is an Army and Coast Guard veteran; he served as a helicopter rescue swimmer. He is also a quadruple amputee. In 1997, he contracted a rare bacterial infection when swimming— septic shock pneumococcus sepsis. The infection essentially stopped the blood flow inside his body. As a result, doctors advised Yvonne that they would need to have all four of his limbs amputated and several internal organs removed. It was the only thing that could be done to save Dave’s life. “As I lay in the hospital bed recovering, I was devastated to find both my arms and legs had been amputated. All I could feel

was despair,” Dave recalled. “I couldn’t imagine how the rest of my life would have any value or happiness.” But thanks to his wife’s continuous care and support from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and others, Dave was able to rebuild his life and start a new career in IT. Over the years, he has learned to ski and golf, he has competed in cycling races, and he has honed his skills as a woodworker. Dave has also risen through the ranks to become the National Commander of the 1.3 million−member veteran service organization DAV (Disabled American Veterans). Yvonne—like many other caregivers of veterans severely injured while serving their country—has made a lifetime of personal sacrifices to help manage her husband’s care. These sacrifices not only benefit Dave, but serve the country as well. Statistics show that family caregivers save the federal government significant dollars, when compared to treating disabled veterans through institutions. For example, veterans with catastrophic injuries such as Dave’s, who are eligible for nursing home care, could cost

taxpayers upward of $300,000 per year. However, by providing support to the family member caregiver through VA’s Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers, the average cost per veteran is under $30,000 annually. And the care is generally better for the veteran’s health and quality of life. It’s shown that family caregivers help reduce overall health care costs through care that minimizes medical complications and lowers the number of hospital admissions for veteran patients. Yet Yvonne and Dave do not qualify for all of VA’s caregiver benefits. Surprisingly, only veterans injured after September 11, 2001, are eligible for the complete comprehensive caregiver benefit package through the VA—which includes education and training, respite care and mental health services, and, perhaps most importantly, monthly stipends and health care coverage for the caregiver. Organizations such as DAV, veterans such as Dave Riley, and Veterans Service Organization partners and caregiver advocacy groups are working hard to

change these laws and correct this inequity. The Foundation is also raising funds through the Army Brick Program, which allows individuals and groups to order personalized bricks that will line the Museum’s outdoor pathways. Time is running out to order a brick at armyhistory.org/bricks that will be in place when the Museum opens in late 2019. The U.S. Army has preserved and restored the artifacts that will be displayed in the Museum, which is being built at Fort Belvoir, just south of Washington, D.C. Home For The Holidays (NAPSI)—With today’s technology, staying in touch with loved ones around the country—and the world—is easier than it’s ever been. We are connected to each other virtually day and night—from cell phones and video calls to social media, texting and e-mail. While we may rely on this technological closeness throughout the year, the holidays offer a unique opportunity to sit and spend time with family members, particularly older family members, whom we don’t see on a regular basis. This face-to-face time provides a chance to connect, catch up, and observe behaviors that may go undetected over the phone or through e-mail. Certain changes in these behaviors from year to year may indicate a need for long-term care. While each passing year will show some changes in an older family member’s capabilities and function, the table at right provides common changes in behavior to watch for to get a better idea of where your loved ones stand functionally. It’s important not to focus on the behavior itself, but rather the change in that behavior compared to what is considered normal for that person. For example, someone who has always been quiet and somewhat introverted would be held to a different standard than someone who is usually very outgoing and conversational, but now seems withdrawn and isolated. Based on the information you gather, it may be time to start thinking about your family’s plan for long-term care. Based on what you observe, the Federal Long Term Care Insurance Program (FLTCIP) may be worth considering when developing your family’s plan for long-term care. How did you answer? Mostly unchanged. The best time for you and your family members to consider long-term care insurance is long before it’s needed. Because the FLTCIP is medically underwritten, it’s important to apply while you’re still in good health to avoid the risk that a future illness or medical condition may prevent you from obtaining coverage later. Also, premiums are directly related to age. This means that premiums tend to be lower for younger applicants. Recognized changes. If you’re already a FLTCIP enrollee and recognize some of these behavioral changes in a loved one, contact a FLTCIP care coordinator at the phone number provided at right to gather important information about the different care options that may be available. James Hogan has logged more than 2,800 hours of voluntary service as one of 260 volunteers nationwide performing 34,177 hours of service a year through the Blinded Veterans Association (BVA). Since 1945, BVA has assisted blinded veterans and their families in adjusting to life without sight and in regaining confidence and independence. The organization of blinded veterans helping blinded veterans was originally founded by combat-blinded veterans of World War II. Through service programs, regional groups, resources, and advocacy before the legislative and executive branches of government, it makes life better for blinded veterans. There’s no charge for any BVA service and you don’t have to be a member to get help. All legally blinded veterans are eligible for assistance whether they become blind during or after active-duty military service. BVA volunteers work out of VA medical centers, outpatient clinics and regional offices but are also active in their communities. The volunteers are often blinded veterans themselves but they can also be spouses, family members, and friends of BVA. For example, Hogan’s dedicated service has also involved his wife, Pam, who volunteers with him. In addition, his guide dog of nine years, Atticus, has also served as a therapy dog at times for VA hospital patients. The volunteers help blinded veterans get the assistance they need when they need it. Sometimes, volunteers speak one on one with blinded veterans; at other times, they listen and share ideas in groups. BVA volunteers provide information on programs and services, encouraging blinded veterans to use the

opportunities that will help them become more independent and self-sufficient. They also demonstrate equipment and aids used by the blind. Hogan performs a multitude of volunteer tasks as a VA volunteer, serving blind and visually impaired veterans in the Visual Impairment Service Team (VIST) program. He helps veterans attend fishing trips by arranging transportation for them and with VIST Support Group activities. One of his specialties is also outreach to younger Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) and Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) veterans and their families regarding benefits, adjustment to disability and educational opportunities. Hogan visits regularly with veterans and mobilizes his Disabled American Veterans chapter to bring treats and cheer to hospitalized patients. He also works with Vietnam Veterans of America on their annual Homeless Stand Downs, and helps the Elks raise funds for an annual veterans’ luncheon and the Boy Scouts place more than 6,000 flags on veterans’ graves on Memorial Day. A veteran of the U.S. Navy, Hogan was diagnosed with hearing loss as a young boy and quickly began using hearing devices. Determined to fulfill his dream of serving his country, he enlisted in the Navy at the height of the Vietnam War. After serving in Vietnam combat areas, he re-entered civilian life in 1973. Ten years later, he was diagnosed with Ushers II, a degenerative disease that causes both vision and hearing loss. It also provides camaraderie, a sense of purpose, and community impact to those who serve in this extraordinary way. New recruits are trained by the department.
