WANTED: Warm lap with a weight limit of 19 pounds or more! I'm not asking for myself, no, but a shy neighbor of mine who has the voice of a mouse in spite of his size. His name is Bruno and he's a bit of a conundrum - he may look a bit sad at first glance and be slow to make the first move, but when YOU initiate affection? Be ready for rumbles and a very happy boy! He's a youthful fellow of only 3 years and very healthy, sweet, AND a total lap cat who appreciates belly rubs even at his young age! His vice is that he began to show aggression to other pets in the home, and so he humbly requests that his furever family makes him their baby. Off the record, though... he was recently seen receiving a kitty-snuggle from our resident flirt, Andreas, and kind of enjoying it, so it may be worth inquiring about. As Bruno's not-so-shy neighbor, I kind of really like him and I think you should come meet him, especially if you'll give me head scritches too!

Fight the flu with these strategies

will be the most common each flu season. Getting vaccinated by the end of October is recommended.

Influenza can rear its head any time of the year, but is known to be a particularly bad thorn in one’s side during times of year when the weather is cold. According to WebMD, anywhere from 5 to 20 percent of the population will get the flu in an average year and it can take three to seven days for a regular case of the illness to go away, with some effects lingering for up to two weeks.

Steer clear of sick individuals and make a concerted effort to avoid germs and the spread of germs. Diligently washing hands and avoiding touching your nose, eyes and mouth can help you avoid and spread germs. In addition, repeatedly clean and disinfect surfaces that may be contaminated with the flu virus.

No one wants to get the flu, which is marked by fever, aches and pains, congestion, fatigue, and other symptoms. As a result, people do all they can to help prevent the flu — or at the very least shorten its duration. The best way to stave off the flu is to get a flu vaccination each year. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the vaccine is carefully curated to treat against the flu strains that research suggests

You might want to consider prophylactic treatment with an antiviral medication. In 2000, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the use of oseltamivir phosphate, which is known by the brand name Tamiflu, as a flu preventative. However, many people only reach for the drug when symptoms already have set in. Instead, it can be especially helpful in preventing the flu when someone in the household has already contracted the illness. The results of several clinical studies show that Tamiflu, when taken once

www.SmartShopperAd.com

daily, is up to 92 percent effective in preventing influenza illness in adolescents, adults and the elderly. Drink plenty of liquids during flu season to keep the body well hydrated so the immune system can be in top form. Fruit juices, water, broth-based soups, and sports drinks can help keep the respiratory system from forming thick mucus that can become laden with bacteria. Should a fever set in, fluids help prevent dehydration.

It also can be wise to take zinc supplements during cold and flu season. Neil Schachter, MD, medical director of the respiratory care department at Mount Sinai Medical Center and the author of “The Good Doctor’s Guide to Colds & Flu,” says zinc may boost immunity, which can shorten the duration or severity of the flu. The flu can quickly escalate and cause serious symptoms. Prevention and early treatment are essential during cold and flu season.

Get a head-start on tax season The dawn of a new calendar year often marks the end of the sometimes hectic holiday season. This time of year marks a return to normalcy for many families, as the kids go back to school and parents return to work. The beginning of January also serves as a great time to start preparing for tax season. While the deadline to file returns may be several months away, getting a head-start allows men and women the chance to organize their tax documents so they aren’t racing against a deadline come April. The following are a handful of ways to start preparing for your returns now. • Find last year’s return. You will need information from last year’s return in order to file this year, so find last year’s return and print it out if you plan to hire a professional to work on your return.

January 23, 2019

• Gather dependents’information. While you might know your own Social Security number by heart, if you have dependents, you’re going to need their information as well. New parents or adults who started serving as their elderly parents’ primary caretakers over the last year will need their kids’ and their folks’ social security numbers. If you do not have these numbers upon filing, your return will likely be delayed and you might even be denied potentially substantial tax credits.

• Speak with your mortgage lender. Homeowners should receive forms documenting their mortgage interest payments for the last year, as the money paid in interest on your home or homes is tax deductible. If these forms are not received in a timely manner, speak with your lender. You might even be able to download them from your lender’s secure website.

The earlier you book your appointment, the more likely you are to get a favorable time for that meeting. In addition, if you have gathered all of the information you need by early February, then booking your appointment early means you can file earlier and receive any return you might be eligible for that much quicker.

• Make a list of your charitable contributions. Charitable contributions, no matter how small, are tax deductible. Eating healthy, eating safe (BPT) - You try to eat healthy, but the one thing you can't control is who has been handling your food and whether they are practicing adequate food safety. Each year, foodborne illnesses sicken close to 50 million Americans and lead to more than 130,000 hospitalizations and 3,000 deaths. A lot of these illnesses are caused by simple things like restaurant employees' failure to properly wash hands, cooking surfaces and fruits and vegetables. Foodborne illnesses present a greater challenge to certain groups of people with reduced immunity, such as children younger than age 4 and people older than age 50. Food can also become compromised much earlier in the production process, and for this reason food producers are using a variety of means to keep our food safe.

BMC Health System and its BMC HealthNet plan formed accountable care partnership plans with BACO and three other ACOs in other parts of the state in order to provide enhanced services to MassHealth members.

The ACO program is a major component in the state's five-year innovative “1115 MassHealth Demonstration1, bringing in $1.8 billion in new federal investments to restructure the current MassHealth system. The waiver – effective July 1, 2017 through June 30, 2022 – seeks to transform the delivery of care for most MassHealth members and to change how that care is paid for, with the goals of improving quality and establishing greater control over spending.

The Boston Accountable Care Organization is made up of 19 provider organizations. It includes Boston Medical Center and, in addition to Harrington HealthCare System, the following health care organizations: Boston University Affiliated Physicians, Inc.; Boston University Family Medicine, Inc.; The Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program, Inc.; Child Health Foundation of Boston, Inc.; Codman Square Health Center, Inc.; Dorchester House Multi-Service Center, Inc.; Evans Medical Foundation, Inc.; Greater New Bedford Community Health Center, Inc.; Greater Roslindale Medical and Dental Center; Health First Family Care Center, Inc.; Manet Community Health Center, Inc.; Mattapan Community Health Center, Inc.; South Boston Community Health Center, Inc., South End Community Health

SOUTHBRIDGE, MA; January 10, 2019 – Harrington HealthCare System is the latest organization to partner with Boston Medical Center (BMC) Health System and participate in the MassHealth Accountable Care Organization (ACO) program through the Boston Accountable Care Organization (BACO).

BMC Health System President Kate Walsh said that the organization’s longstanding patient and community-centered approach, understanding of MassHealth cost drivers, and its commitment to innovative, new approaches to improve care put BMC Health System and BACO in a strong position for success. “We’re pleased to be a part of this important restructuring of the MassHealth program to improve care for MassHealth patients and reduce costs for the Commonwealth, Walsh said.
