lipoprotein, often referred to as “bad” cholesterol, can increase a person’s risk for heart disease. The AHA notes that excessive amounts of cholesterol can be deposited into the arteries as plaque. When that happens, it leads to a condition known as atherosclerosis, or a narrowing of the inside of the artery walls. That narrowing leads to an increased risk for heart attack and stroke. Men and women should get their cholesterol levels checked at least once every four to six years beginning at age 20. Men and women who have been diagnosed with high cholesterol should recognize that cholesterol is only found in animal products, so a diet that is rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains and low in animal products can provide a simple way for men and women to lower their cholesterol. A more thorough and detailed plan to lower cholesterol levels should be discussed with a physician.

Heart disease is a formidable foe. According to the American Heart Association, heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, accounting for approximately 800,000 deaths every year. The Government of Canada notes that heart disease is the second leading cause of death in that country, annually accounting for tens of thousands of deaths. (Note: Canada’s population is slightly more than one-tenth the population of the United States.) While heart disease exacts a devastating toll on the United States and Canada, its reach extends far beyond North America, as the American College of Cardiology notes that cardiovascular disease accounts for 31 percent of all deaths across the globe. In spite of the prevalence of heart disease, men and women are not helpless against it. In fact, there are many ways for men and women to reduce their risk for heart disease. 1. Maintain a healthy weight. The American Heart Association reports that between 60 and 70 percent of Americans are overweight or obese. Carrying around extra weight takes a toll on the body, increasing a person’s risk for heart disease and stroke. Overweight or obese men and women can work with their physicians to develop a plan for effective, long-term weight loss, a plan that will likely include a combination of diet and routine exercise.

More information about heart disease and how to combat it can be found at www.heart.org. not necessarily produce symptoms. Blood pressure measures the force pushing outward on the walls of blood vessels as they carry blood oxygen to the body’s organs, and the force created as the heart rests between beats. Over time, the arterial walls of people with high blood pressure may become stressed and develop weak spots or scarring that makes them vulnerable to the buildup of plaque. Plaque buildup can increase the risk of blood clots and stroke. Blood pressure can rise as a person ages, so managing blood pressure involves routinely checking it and making certain changes, such as eating healthier foods and exercising more often, if it is high.

SMART BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT

Independent bookstore, gift shop, café & community gathering space

55 East Main St. • Webster, MA 508-949-6232 www.bookloversgourmet.com

Booklovers’ Gourmet, located in Webster, MA will celebrate 23 years in business this March. A destination store, which consists of a 1,000 square foot independent bookstore, coffee house & gift shop, Booklovers’ Gourmet opened its doors in early March of 1995 by owner/operator Debra Horan, a Webster native and graduate of The Rhode Island School of Design. From the very beginning, the shop was envisioned as a central gathering place where people could enjoy good books, local art, poetry & music and other cultural happenings in a cozy, inviting space. Still in its original location at 55 East Main Street, Booklovers’ Gourmet carries a wide variety of new & used books on all subject matters and interests as well as hand selected gift items,

many locally made, including pottery, garden & home decor, jewelry, candles, incense and greeting cards. Educational puzzles & toys by “Melissa & Doug” are featured prominently in the children’s room. The café offers homemade pastries by Phyllis’s Bakery in Putnam, CT and organic, micro-roasted coffee from Hogan Brothers Coffee Roasters in Framingham, MA plus other specialty beverages like smoothies, matcha green tea and apple cider. There are many opportunities to socialize on a monthly basis-book discussion groups, writers groups, open mics, author readings & signings, special workshops and artist receptions. “The heart and soul of this type of community-based business is being

able to offer cultural opportunities for everyone to enjoy without having to travel to the big city. To be able to experience different ideas and viewpoints through these events or viewing art is vital and enriching for everyone”, said Ms. Horan. Another example of this priority is showcasing the work of local and student artists throughout the year. What does the PTA do, you might ask? I had NO IDEA, until I got involved and knew that I had to share. As the President of the PTA, I’m making this a mission, to educate other parents, teachers, students and community members as to how much of a contribution this amazing organization makes to the kids and our schools. Without new members, fundraising, volunteers and support, these things would all go away (or suffer). We look forward to answering any questions you might have and welcome you to come to any meeting, or volunteer for an event, that might work for 8) Movie nights at the schools. We also collect clothing and school supplies, for the schools to keep on hand when needed.

Deathbed Scenes as Death of Community in Mid-20th Century Irish-American Fiction with Beth O’Leary Anish SOUTHBRIDGE - For the first 100 years that the Irish lived in cities of the northeastern United States, they mostly inhabited ethnically homogeneous neighborhoods, with Cath-

olic parishes at their center. Just after World War II, however, thanks in part to economic incentives provided to returning soldiers, the Irish in America began dispersing to the suburbs. The environment in which Irish Americans lived began to change drastically during this time period. In rising up and out of the urban ghetto, they had gained material comfort, but they had lost the safety net that was their Irish neighborhoods. This loss provoked anxiety over blending anonymously into the rest of white America, losing their uniqueness and possibly their values. Irish-American novelists in the decade after World War II strove to capture the Irish-American community of their grandparents they saw fading away. This presentation to be held on Thursday, March 15 from 6;30pm to 7:30pm at the Jacob Edwards Library will discuss some of the historical factors that caused this change in make-up of the Irish-American community. It will then examine how novels from this time period use the death of a community elder to symbolize the disappearance of the concentrated ethnic neighborhoods, those familiar Irish-American environments, of the authors’ youths. Edward McSorley’s Our Own Kind (1946), Mary Doyle Curran’s The Parish and The Hill (1948), and Edwin O’Connor’s The Last Hurrah (1956) express concern for what the Irish had become when they lost the core of values represented in the immigrant generation. Wakes, keening, and deathbed confessions function in these novels both as literal, traditional send offs for elderly immigrant characters, and as symbolic farewells to the set of values they represent.

Set in western Massachusetts, the plot emerges through the eyes of the arresting police officer, the judge’s law clerks, the defense attorney, the prosecutor, the witnesses, and the defendant himself. What to bring to the Tax Preparer

55 Days Until April 17th

Smart Tax Tips

(NAPSI)—While a plate of cookies may be nice to bring a hostess, what your tax preparer would prefer (at least in the office) is that you bring in the proper paperwork. Here’s a list of the most likely paperwork to provide:

Tax Preparers: Take these Steps After a Data Loss

The IRS warns tax professionals that cybercriminals are at work now that the nation’s tax season is here. Thieves file fraudulent tax returns and use the stolen information to get tax refunds using their victims’ information. Tax preparers who experience a data theft can follow these steps.

What You’ll Need 1. Last year’s return, the last two years if this is your first appointment. Chances are much of the information—Social Security numbers, address and the like— will be the same, saving everybody time and reducing the risk of errors.

Contact the IRS and law enforcement: IRS – Report client data theft to the local IRS Stakeholder Liaison. Liaisons will notify IRS Criminal Investigation and other appropriate offices within the agency on behalf of the preparer. Speed is critical. If reported quickly, the IRS can take steps to block fraudulent returns in a preparer’s clients’ names. • Federal Bureau of Investigation – Contact your local office. • Local police – File a police report on the data theft. Contact state agencies where they prepare state returns: • State Tax Agencies. • State Attorneys General – Most states require that the attorney general be notified of data thefts. This process may involve contacting multiple offices.

2. Your W-2. W-2s must be mailed to employees by January 31. They show your income and how much you’ve already paid in income taxes. If you’ve had more than one job this year, you need a W-2 form from each of them.

Contact experts: • Security expert – They can determine the cause and scope of the theft. They can also figure out how to prevent further losses. • Insurance company – Preparers should check to see if their insurance policy covers expenses related to the data loss. Contact clients and other services: • Federal Trade Commission – They offer tips and templates for businesses that suffer data compromise. They even have suggested language for informing clients. • Clients – Send a letter to victims letting them know about the theft. Preparers should work with law enforcement on timing. A preparer who has prior-year data in their system may need to contact former clients. • Tax software provider – The provider may need to take steps to prevent inappropriate use of the compromised account for e-filing. • Website and client portal provider – Thieves may have stolen passwords. The preparer and provider would need to reset these • Credit and identity theft protection agency – Certain states require credit monitoring and identity theft protection to victims of ID theft. • Credit bureaus – Notify them if there’s a compromise. The preparer’s clients may seek their services. * Source: www.IRS.gov

3. 1099s. If you’re a freelancer or part-time worker, you should have 1099 forms from everyone for whom you’ve worked this year. These forms are also used to report earned interest, cancellation of debt, dividends received and proceeds from broker transactions.

money donations. Keep a list of items and the values you assigned them along with the receipts for any household goods, toys and clothing donations. If you volunteer, keep a record of your mileage and other expenses. 5. 1098 forms. Homeowners can deduct mortgage interest. Also deductible are student loan interest and tuition paid to colleges and universities. 6. If you have a home office, you can deduct some of your rent, mortgage, utilities and so on. Bring any relevant receipts. 7. If you’ve been looking for work, bring receipts for whatever the search has cost you—transportation, paying to join a job search website, hiring a résumé writer or taking relevant courses. This list should get you started, but a tax expert such as an enrolled agent (EA) will let you know about any additional documentation needed to complete your return. Enrolled agents are the only federally licensed tax practitioners who specialize in tax matters and have unlimited rights to represent taxpayers before the IRS.

4. Receipts for donations. Keep the receipts for all charitable event sponsorships, money or food for holiday charities and any other

3 tips to keep your home cozy all winter

(BPT) - Every year, homeowners across the country take precautionary steps to winterize their homes to protect against burst water pipes as well as improve their overall comfort throughout the colder months. Winterizing your home goes beyond just ensuring snow and chills stay out. These three tips will help ensure that your home is adequately prepared for the harsher months ahead. 1. Reduce the risk of water damage - Beyond damage sustained from heavy rainfall, water damage can occur because of ice dam formation. Ice dams on your roof as well as snow melt near vulnerable basement windows can cause significant (and often unseen) damage to your home, which can result in costly repairs. Replacing traditional attic insulation with open-cell spray foam insulation can help mitigate air loss through your home's roof, reducing the risk of ice dams while also helping to keep

all that expensively conditioned air inside your home, keeping you and your family comfortable. Closedcell spray foam insulation installed in basements can help reduce the risk of water entering your home. FEMA has identified this insulation as a flood-resistant material. 2. Reducing the prevalence of drafts - Cold spots and drafts throughout your home can literally make you shudder. It is estimated by the Air Barrier Association of America (ABAA) that gaps and cracks throughout the typical 2,500-square-foot American home can equate to more than half a mile. Sealing your home's tiny cracks and crevices can help reduce the possibility of drafts inside your home. 3. Address potential problems before they develop - The frigid winter weather can often create problems that you did not anticipate around your home. Colder temperatures and increased precipitation are harsher on a house. Cleaning eavestroughs, ensuring the seals around windows and doors are

intact, upgrading your traditional insulation and getting your HVAC unit serviced are all actions that can help to prepare your home for the upcoming winter. Insulation can play a vital role in winterizing your home, allowing you and your family to remain comfortable throughout the entire winter. Spray foam insulation like that available from Icynene works well in all climates to seal the building and fill gaps to stop air leakage and reduce the strain on HVAC equipment. More information is available online at www.icynene.com.
