How Much Will This Holiday Season Cost You? (StatePoint) According to one festive and fun annual economic indicator, the cost of this holiday season for shoppers is not expected to rise a significant amount over last year. For more than 30 years, PNC has calculated the combined estimated price of the gifts from the classic carol “The 12 Days of Christmas.” Known as the PNC Christmas Price Index, the results can indicate what holiday shoppers might expect at the register. This year, the index calculated the total price of all 12 gifts to be $34,558.65, a modest 0.6 percent increase over last year. While the average consumer is unlikely to shop online or at the mall in search of geese-a-laying or a partridge in a pear tree, the Christmas Price Index can be informative for those planning their holiday shopping, as the cost

for these gifts often increase or decrease at a rate consistent with the U.S. Consumer Price Index, a measure of inflation produced by the U.S. Department of Labor. “The U.S. economy is growing at a sustainable pace, fueled by higher consumer confidence, low unemployment, modest wage gains and low interest rates,” says Thomas P. Melcher, chief investment officer for PNC Asset Management Group. “However, The PNC Christmas Price Index rose at slow steady pace of 0.6 percent in 2017, as companies appear hesitant to pass through price increases to the consumer.” A few factors largely have driven changes in the index over the years. The Internet makes it easier to find the gifts from the song online, but these goods and services tend to be expensive, mainly due to added shipping and handling costs. The price of services overall has increased, while the price of goods has slowed. Fuel costs, which have been especially volatile over the

last few years, have a major effect on the cost of shipping. So, while you may have no need to buy anyone on your list any maids-

a-milking, it is good for jewelry lovers to know that the price of golden rings jumped more than any other gift that may be on their true love’s wishlist this year!

The health benefits of avocados Food trends come and go. But one such trend that has seemingly enjoyed more staying power than other flavors of the month is avocado toast, a popular dish that might trace some of that admiration to how easy it is to prepare. The popularity of avocado toast has exploded in recent years, but it has actually been around for decades. Many trace the origins of avocado toast to Australia, though it’s hard for food historians to say with utmost certainty where the dish was first served. Avocado toast might be as healthy as it is popular. Avocados boast a host of health benefits, some of which might surprise even the most ardent devotee of avocado toast.

• Avocados are loaded with vitamins. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Nutrient Database, avocados are a great source of numerous vitamins, including C, E, K, and B-6. Avocados also contain beta-carotene, which the human body converts into vitamin A that promotes healthy skin and a strong immune system. • Avocados can benefit vision. Avocados contain lutein and zeaxanthin, a pair phytochemicals concentrated in the tissues in the eyes. Lutein and zeaxanthin are believed to block blue light from reaching structures in the retina, thereby reducing a person’s risk of developing macular degeneration. December 18th Redeeming the Revolution - Book Talk by Dr. Joseph U. Lenti SOUTHBRIDGE - On Monday, December 18 from 6:30pm to 7:30pm at the Jacob Edwards Library. Dr. Joseph U. Lenti will be at the Library to discuss his book “Redeeming the Revolution”. Nearly fifty years ago, on October 2, 1968, over 300 students and other civilians were murdered while peacefully demonstrating in a plaza in Mexico City’s Tlatelolco district. The Massacre of Tlatelolco, hence, precipitated a political crisis that

forced the Mexican government to alter its relationship with the working class, a sector only tangentially connected to the blood bath. In his new book, Redeeming the Revolution: the State and Organized Labor in Post-Tlatelolco Mexico, Dr. Joseph U. Lenti describes events that, although they happened half a century ago in a place far away, have increasing relevance in today’s America. Through its treatment of themes including political populism, class conflict, workers’ activism, and government repression, Lenti’s book demonstrates how a government may use history, legacy, and ideology to appease the masses and obscure the truth. Lenti has a B.S. in history from Northeastern University and a M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of New Mexico. Since 2010 he has been a professor of Latin American history at Eastern Washington University in Spokane, WA. As a professor he has maintained a busy teaching and publication schedule that has expanded his community’s awareness about Latin America through the organization of research forums – the most important being the 2016 EWU Colloquium on Mexico: Societal Challenges & Popular Responses, a major event that put thirty-five scholars, filmmakers, journalists, and social activists in discussion with over a thousand community members on subjects of state and political stability, migration, drug trafficking, cultural diffusion and resistance in the Mexican-U.S. borderlands, broadly defined. Lenti is a native of Southbridge and a graduate of Southbridge High School (Class of 1996.) This will be his first ever academic talk in his hometown. Copies of Lenti’s book will be available for sale and signing following the discussion. Sponsored by Friends of Jacob Edwards Library.
