COMING SOON... Steiner 2018 HOLIDAY

Community Cat

Connection

The Wish Book is full of holiday gift ideas that are sold locally and with an attractive catalog-style layout. Our Wish Book is something you will be excited to browse through this Holiday Season! The name is Steiner, and my rugged good looks are just one of the perks you'll get when you take me home with you. I don't know what they mean by this, but I've been called a "big baby" and a "giant teddy bear" more than a few times since I came here. Those are compliments, right? I hope so, because even though I have some thick skin from being forced to live on the streets for four years after I was thrown out as a youngster, I still love people. I still trust them, I still want to be with them. I may feel like solid muscle when you touch me, but I adore affection and my poofy cheeks are soft enough to scritch all day long. The folks who give me yummies think I'm around 4-6 years old and that I'm a pretty chill dude who enjoys a nice view of the great outdoors and would be fine with friendly feline roomies. Let the applications begin!

Lesser-known information about Halloween Halloween is a day of costumes, hijinks and an often unhealthy helping of sugary sweets. Many celebrants know that Halloween evolved from ancient Celtic festivals, such as Samhain, which marked the end of the harvest season and the dawn of winter. Celts were no longer spending long days in the pastures, and so they gathered in their homes to tell stories and wait out the winter. When Christianity spread, Halloween became intertwined with a feast day dedicated to the saints and deceased loved ones. “All Hallows Even,” eventually got shortened to “Hallowe’en,” and then Halloween.

Though certain parts of Halloween history are well-known, there are many additional interesting facts about this beloved holiday that are less widely known. The following are some lesser known Halloween tidbits, courtesy of the websites, The Thought & Expression Company and Random History, as well as “The Halloween Handbook” (Citadel Press) by Ed Morrow. • The first jack-o-lanterns were made from turnips and beets. Pumpkins were used after Halloween was brought to North America. • The word “witch” is thought to come from the Olde English word “wicce,” meaning “wise woman.” Witches once were held in high regard.

• Pumpkins actually are a fruit, a type of squash that is a member of the gourd family. Its cousins include cucumbers, melons, and other squashes. • Trick-or-treating may have originated with a European custom called “souling.” On All Soul’s Day, early Christians would go doorto-door begging for “soul cakes,” which were square pieces of bread with currants. The more cakes a person received, the more prayers he or she would promise to the dead relatives of the cake donors.

Halloween candy sales in the United States average about $2 billion annually. • Some people still celebrate the ancient Celtic customs of Samhain. Many followers of various pagan religions, such as the Druids and Wiccans, observe this day as a religious festival and a memorial day for their deceased friends. It also is a night to practice various forms of divination.

Sweet, sweet candy history Halloween is as much about candy as it is about dressing up in fun costumes and engaging in scare tactics. Humans have loved their sweets for centuries. Early human beings made candy out of honey by drying it and forming a taffy-like confection, while many modern incarnations of candy involve dissolving sugar into water or milk to form a syrup. Candy is then made by varying the temperature of the syrup and the sugar concentration to achieve desired textures. The word “candy” is derived from the Arabic “quandi,” meaning “made of sugar.”

It wasn’t until the 19th century that innovators began mixing cocoa with sugar to create chocolate bars. Joseph Fry is credited with making the first chocolate bar in 1847, using bittersweet chocolate. Milk chocolate came later, in 1875, when it was introduced by Henry Nestlé and Daniel Peter. Milton Hershey began producing sweet chocolate in 1894.

Hershey bars, Nestlé bars and many other original candies are still in production today. Tootsie Rolls and Charleston Chews are other classic candies still produced. Good & Plenty debuted in 1893, making it the oldest branded candy in America. GUIDE

The 4 Cs of diamonds

• Color: A white diamond is more valuable the less color it contains. GIA uses a D-to-Z grading system to determine a diamond’s color value. D would be a colorless diamond and Z the most saturated with color.

Anyone who is about to purchase a diamond is encouraged to do their research about selecting quality diamonds. At the heart of the diamond grading process are the 4 Cs of diamond quality. The Cs refer to carat weight, color grade, clarity grade, and cut grade. The Gemological Institute of America helped to create the Diamond 4 Cs and the International Diamond Grading System™. These benchmarks are used to classify all diamonds.

• Clarity: Diamonds are formed by carbon exposed to heat and pressure. Natural internal characteristics known as inclusions and external components called blemishes are the norm. The closer the gem comes to being perfectly pure without inclusions or blemishes, the greater the value.

Diamonds are the stone of choice for engagement rings and wedding jewelry. Diamonds are durable and remain a timeless way to complement every style.

The following is the GIA’s explanation of each component of the system. • Carat: Diamond carat weight is the measurement of how much the diamond weighs and is equivalent to 200 milligrams per carat. Each carat is subdivided into 100 points. Therefore, a one-carat diamond is 1.00 or 100 points, while a twentyfive point diamond is .25 carats. Naturally, larger diamonds can be more rare and desirable.

• Cut: To transmit light and sparkle, diamonds have to be cut precisely and with great artistry. A diamond will be further graded based on symmetry and proportions, as well as how the stone returns light. Brightness, which is the internal and external white light reflected; fire, or the scattering of white light into rainbow colors; and scintillation, or the sparkle the diamond produces, are factored into how the cut is valued. Diamonds are a major investment. Consumers who do their research and verify diamond grading can get the best value for their money.

Harrington Announces "Devestating Effects" to Patient Care if Question 1 Passes in November

services, impacting access to care. Emergency department wait times will increase dramatically as the hospital struggles to comply with the rigid ratios.

Government mandated nurse staffing ratios will cause hospital $5 million loss

The ballot question would require that hospitals across the state, no matter their size or specific needs of their patients, to adhere to the same rigid nurse staffing ratios within all patient care areas at all times. The petition does not make allowances for rural or small community hospitals, holding them to the same staffing ratios as major Boston teaching hospitals. “As a nurse, I find the inflexibility of these proposed ratios so dangerous,” said Tracy DiGregorio, RN, a 18year veteran nurse at Harrington. “These numbers will not change with patients’ conditions, will not change based on the nurse and their experience, and will not change for emergency situations that we can’t plan for. I have the training and experience to make these decisions so the government -- or anyone else for that matter -- doesn’t have to.”

BOSTON, MA – September 11, 2018 – Harrington HealthCare System today announced the negative impacts mandated nurse staffing ratios would have on their viability and their capability to provide safe, quality care to patients in the region. Slated to be Question 1 on the ballot this November, these rigid staffing ratios will devastate community hospitals and behavioral health facilities across Massachusetts. “Harrington is proud to deliver safe and quality care to those in our community,” said Jessica Calcidise, Vice President of Nursing and Ancillary Operations at Harrington HealthCare System. “The government has no place in implementing cookie-cutter care across all of patients, all of our departments, and all our hospitals across Massachusetts. From our nurses to our doctors, our anesthesiologists and support staff, we already make the best decisions for our patients every minute of every day—we don’t need a blanket mandate telling us how we should be delivering care.” The enormous costs associated with the nurse staffing ballot question will cost Harrington Hospital approximately $5.2 million, resulting in possible bed closures and cuts to critical health programs, including cancer screenings, substance use treatments, mental health services and domestic violence prevention programs. According to an independent study by MassInsight and BW Research Partners, Question 1 will cost Massachusetts’ health care system $1.3 billion in the first year, and $900 million every year thereafter. This cost will be passed on to community hospitals, and result in the closure of programs and
