Drivers' re-education on flat-tire fixing

(BPT) - The hardships of navigating winter roads aren't made any easier when facing a flat tire. In fact, for many Americans, fixing a flat remains a mystery. According to a survey from AAA, nearly 20 percent of U.S. drivers don't know how to change a flat tire. This is compounded by research saying there are 220 million flat tires annually - and each driver will experience up to five flat tires in their lifetime. Before hitting the road, study up on these flat-tire-fixing hacks and build up the confidence to complete this all-American road test: Be spared: Knowing how to change a flat is all for naught if a spare tire is not along for the ride. Spares are usually hidden under the carpet in the trunk area, but they aren't always included in newer vehicles (allowing manufacturers to make lighter, more fuel-efficient vehicles). When purchasing a new

Use the tire iron to further secure the lug nuts in a "star-like" pattern: After tightening the first lug nut, tighten the one that is diagonally across from it and continue in that pattern. This will prevent the wheel from wobbling. In an age of mobile phones and easy connection to roadside assistance, the knowledge of addressing a flat tire has gone out the window - or the sunroof. But, motorists should know - and practice - the basics of changing a flat to ensure they are prepared for the dreaded pop.

7 Tips For Balancing Retirement Savings And Paying For College (BPT) - Most people want to help their children pay for a quality college education, but it can be difficult to balance personal financial goals and funding your kids' educational aspirations. When retirement savings is sacrificed for college costs, it can be a disservice to the entire family.

February 14, 2018 Tip 3: Involve your children in the college cost discussion. College is expensive, so make sure you're discussing with your kids overall costs and what you're willing to contribute. Chicken soup is good for more than the soul Cold season never seems to take a year off. Experts estimate that colds are so widespread that very few humans escape infection. Some people come down with colds more than once per year. That should not come as too great a surprise, as there are now thought to be more than 200 different strains of cold. For the past 50 years, researchers studied two classes of viruses responsible for a total of roughly 100 different incarnations of the common cold. Two years ago, after development of molecular techniques to look at the viral genome, researchers found a third class of rhinoviruses, according to James Gern, MD, an asthma specialist at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. This discovery doubled the number of potential cold viruses. While there’s no cure for the common cold, cold remedies have been around for centuries. Chicken soup remains one of the more popular cold remedies. Grandmothers have long espoused the virtues of chicken soup with regard to treating colds, but now

research is backing up those claims. Researchers have long examined the potential health benefits of chicken soup in an attempt to understand why it seems to be such an effective tonic at treating colds. A 1998 report found that broth may help improve the function of the tiny hairs in noses called cilia. The cilia help prevent contagions from getting into the body. Hot fluids also can help increase the movement of nasal mucus, helping to relieve stuffiness and congestion. Chicken soup also can help reduce inflammation, which often results as the immune system works to fight the cold virus. A study in the

What to bring to the Tax Preparer

62 Days Until April 17th

Smart Tax Tips Early Withdrawals from Retirement Plans

Many people find it necessary to take out money early from their IRA or retirement plan. Doing so, however, can trigger an additional tax on top of income tax taxpayers may have to pay. Here are a few key points to know about taking an early distribution: Early Withdrawals. An early withdrawal normally is taking cash out of a retirement plan before the taxpayer is 59½ years old. Additional Tax. If a taxpayer took an early withdrawal from a plan last year, they must report it to the IRS. They may have to pay income tax on the amount taken out. If it was an early withdrawal, they may have to pay an additional 10 percent tax. Nontaxable Withdrawals. The additional 10 percent tax does not apply to nontaxable withdrawals. These include withdrawals of contributions that taxpayers paid tax on before they put them into the plan. A rollover is a form of nontaxable withdrawal. A rollover occurs when people take cash or other assets from one plan and put the money in another plan. They normally have 60 days to complete a rollover to make it tax-free. Check Exceptions. There are many exceptions to the additional 10 percent tax. Some of the rules for retirement plans are different from the rules for IRAs. File Form 5329. If someone took an early withdrawal last year, they may have to file Form 5329, Additional Taxes on Qualified Plans (Including IRAs) and Other Tax-Favored Accounts, with their federal tax return. Form 5329 has more details. Use IRS e-file. Early withdrawal rules can be complex. IRS e-fileis the easiest and most accurate way to file a tax return. The tax software that taxpayers use to e-file will pick the right tax forms, do the math and help get the tax benefits they are due. Seven out of 10 taxpayers qualify to use IRS Free File tax software. Free File is only available through the IRS website at IRS.gov/freefile. More information on this topic is available on IRS.gov. Taxpayers should keep a copy of their tax return. Beginning in 2017, taxpayers using a software product for the first time may need their Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) amount from their prior-year tax return to verify their identity. Taxpayers can learn more about how to verify their identity and electronically sign tax returns at Validating Your Electronically Filed Tax Return. * Source: www.IRS.gov

CLIP & SAVE

(NAPSI)—While a plate of cookies may be nice to bring a hostess, what your tax preparer would prefer (at least in the office) is that you bring in the proper paperwork. Here’s a list of the most likely paperwork to provide: What You’ll Need 1. Last year’s return, the last two years if this is your first appointment. Chances are much of the information—Social Security numbers, address and the like— will be the same, saving everybody time and reducing the risk of errors. 2. Your W-2. W-2s must be mailed to employees by January 31. They show your income and how much you’ve already paid in income taxes. If you’ve had more than one job this year, you need a W-2 form from each of them. 3. 1099s. If you’re a freelancer or part-time worker, you should have 1099 forms from everyone for whom you’ve worked this year. These forms are also used to report earned interest, cancellation of debt, dividends received and proceeds from broker transactions.

money donations. Keep a list of items and the values you assigned them along with the receipts for any household goods, toys and clothing donations. If you volunteer, keep a record of your mileage and other expenses. 5. 1098 forms. Homeowners can deduct mortgage interest. Also deductible are student loan interest and tuition paid to colleges and universities. 6. If you have a home office, you can deduct some of your rent, mortgage, utilities and so on. Bring any relevant receipts. 7. If you’ve been looking for work, bring receipts for whatever the search has cost you—transportation, paying to join a job search website, hiring a résumé writer or taking relevant courses. This list should get you started, but a tax expert such as an enrolled agent (EA) will let you know about any additional documentation needed to complete your return. Enrolled agents are the only federally licensed tax practitioners who specialize in tax matters and have unlimited rights to represent taxpayers before the IRS.

4. Receipts for donations. Keep the receipts for all charitable event sponsorships, money or food for holiday charities and any other

The physical and emotional ways love affects the body

Love is at the forefront of couples’ minds during the month of February, thanks in large part Valentine’s Day. For centuries, poets have espoused the virtues of love while songwriters often look to love and heartache as their subject matter. It’s easy to overlook that the heart and the brain are parts of the body when considering the effects of being in love. While a large part of the reactions that occur are emotional in nature, being in love also has a profound physical effect on the body. Scientists have studied chemicals that flood the brain when love is in the air. noting that some can affect personal attachment, pleasure and well-being. So there are reasons why pulses race and palms sweat when people are in love. Here are some chemical players in the love equation.

• Dopamine: The medical resource Health says dopamine is the brain’s pleasure chemical and it is released during pleasurable activities. When one falls in love, he or she feels elated and energetic because of the release of dopamine. Biological anthropologists say that the release of dopamine can lead to intense focus on the object of one’s desire and influence goal-oriented behavior. • Adrenaline & norepinephrine: These chemical messengers cause anxiety to rise and the fight or flight response to kick in. These substances also contribute to a racing heart and sweaty hands. Butterflies in the stomach and nervousness are subtle clues that there is genuine attraction for a person. • Oxytocin: Oxytocin is known as the “love hormone,” according to University of Birmingham researchers. Oxytocin, researchers

found, produces some of the same symptoms of indulging in alcohol. These include feeling less inhibited, an increased willingness to take risks and calmness. Oxytocin also helps couples bond by promoting intimacy, according to research associates at Rutgers University. • Testosterone: Testosterone is largely considered a male hormone, but it is present in females as well. Testosterone rises during romantic love, and it can increase sexual desire in a partner. Health also states that testosterone may be present in male saliva and transferred to a partner through kissing, further revving up intimate feelings. • Pheromones: Although they are only believed, and not proven, to play a part in romantic attraction, pheromones do garner significant attention. Some theorize that these chemical messengers can change body chemistry so that those in love can actually “smell” their romantic partners. It may help explain why

women may wear their partner’s shirt to bed or a man may hold on to a scarf or a pillow his lover has used. Love can have a dramatic impact on the human body, and chemicals play a larger role than many may know.
