Center of Hope Opens New Day Habilitation Program
SOUTHBRIDGE, MA. - The Center of Hope Foundation, a Chapter of the Arc in South Central Massachusetts, opened its newest Day Habilitation program in Sturbridge, MA on Tuesday, January 2. This is the agency’s fifth Day Hab program and is serving nearly 100 adults with Intellectual Disabilities at this site. The Sturbridge Day Habilitation program offers a variety of community based activities aligned with skills trainings, and also promotes vocational opportunities, volunteer options, and community based activities with an emphasis on physical activity. Individuals that attend this program create schedules based on their interest and skill sets. Program members also research and develop relationships with local nonprofits to support their volunteer needs.
January 17, 2018
www.SmartShopperAd.com
Upon admission, individuals are evaluated by consultants in Speech Therapy, Physical Therapy, and Occupational Therapy and consultants, then train program staff in order to fulfill any therapeutic recommendations that are made. At Sturbridge Day Habilitation, each individual is assigned a Case Manager who works with the person to develop a balanced schedule and measurable objectives based on sustaining and promoting a more independent lifestyle. Chad Krause, Vice President of Day Programs, states “This program has been a long time coming. The agency continues to receive referrals for our services and this additional site allows us to admit new program members”. The Day Habilitation program works collaboratively with the agency’s Employment Supports program, which provides vocational opportunities to members served. This blended model, according to Krause, “is what attracts
individuals to our program sites. We recognize that each person is unique and has different needs, so everyone develops their own schedule. Vocational opportunities at the agency include working at our agency businesses, which include a candy shop in Sturbridge (Hope Sweet Hope),a thrift store in Southbridge ( Hope’s Treasures), Auto Detailing in Southbridge ( Just the Details) as well as many other entrepreneurial social enterprises that provide work opportunities and training for individuals”.
Monthly, the Center offers a tour of the agency for those in the community interested in learning more about the agency and the services we provide to the community. The Center is hosting its next monthly “Sandwich and Social” on Tuesday, January 30th. For more information, please call the agency at (508) 764-4085. To learn more about the agency, visit www.thecenterofhope.org or call (508 764-4085).

Hi! My name is Tammy and I am a petite tortie girl a little over a year old. I love all the kitties here at the shelter, especially my good friend Hallie, who I have been showing the ropes and helping her to come out of her shell. I am still a little shy but with the right person and a little patience, in a quiet home with no small children, I am sure I will fit right in to your home. Will you be the special one to give me that chance? The CCC is in need of supplies, especially litter (Scoop Away), bleach, laundry detergent, dry and wet cat and kitten food (Purina/Friskies), paper towels, trash bags, and treats! Any help is very much appreciated! We are located at 289 Thompson Road in Webster and are open Thursday through Sunday 12pm-3:30pm. You can see more of our adoptable cats on Petfinder and Adopt-a-pet and we would love it if you would follow us and share our kitties on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com /pages/Community-Cat Connection/18375625177438. How to create an effective fire safety plan
The following guidelines can help families customize their fire escape plans.
How quickly fire can spread may surprise some people. The Grand Traverse Metro Fire Department says that in the average two-story While fire can provide warmth and home fire, fire ignites in 30 seconds, safety, it also can cause immediate smoke pours into most rooms by 2.5 and significant damage that can minutes, and roughly 4.5 minutes uproot lives and devastate homes. after the fire has ignited, flames Because fire is such a formidable can be visible from the exterior of foe, it’s imperative that people from a house. Temperatures inside can all walks of life have a fire safety grow from 190 F to more than 1400 plan. F in two minutes. The threat of fire The National Fire Protection Association says U.S. fire departments responded to an average of 358,500 home structure fires per year between 2011 and 2015. On average, seven people die in U.S. home fires per day. The Ontario Ministry of Community Safety & Correctional Services says 48 percent of fires that cause severe losses occur in residential properties. Both the NFPA and the Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management in Ontario state that cooking-related fires are the most prevalent, followed by fires sparked by heating equipment.
www.SmartShopperAd.com
• Find two ways out. Look at your home’s layout and identify two ways out of every room, if possible. Walk around the house in each room and practice what to do if a fire broke out in that space, offers Safe Kids Worldwide. • Choose an outside meeting place. Establish a spot to meet a safe distance in front of the home where everyone can gather after they’ve gotten out safely.
Planning is critical When fires ignite, time is of the essence to make a fast evacuation. Unfortunately, panic may set in and people may not know how to act when under such acute stress. That’s why planning for the event of fire can provide families with the information they need to evacuate safely. Evacuation plans and drills should be established and practiced frequently so that getting out alive becomes second nature. However, only about one-quarter of households have actually developed and practiced a home-fire escape plan, according to the NFPA.
• Drop it low. Heat and smoke rise and escaping on hands and knees is essential for survival.
• Assign help to those with mobility issues. Elderly adults, infants or young children may have difficulty escaping on their own. Plan a buddy system so that a key person in the household is responsible for rousing and helping another from the house. • Check fire protection. Be sure that there is a working smoke alarm in every bedroom and on every level of the house.
• Practice several times a year. Conduct a fire drill a few times each year, and choose a different escape route each time. Invest in a UIcertified collapsible rescue ladder and attach it at least once, advises The Fire Department of New York, in case a second-story evacuation is necessary.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that in the last seven years the flu has been responsible for more than 700,000 hospitalizations and more than 55,000 deaths across the U.S. Furthermore, the risk of flu varies state by state, and some regions - including Texas, Florida and California - tend to see more flu cases than others. Contrary to popular belief, cats can be trained. Although they’re not likely to be as motivated by praise as dogs, cats can respond to food treats — particularly something soft and smelly. However, that may take some practice as, according to Petfinder, cats are less instinctively driven to work in partnership with humans. But those tasty treats may inspire them to stay and come and even use a toilet in lieu of a litter box. People who welcome cats into their homes can expect a companion for a long time, as cats can live up to 20 years or more. Cats make wonderful pets. In contrast to dogs, cats have not undergone major changes since being domesticated, and their ancient characteristics still make them desirable companions to this day.
