A guide for health and well-being for you and your family. Protect Eyes From Ultraviolet Rays Thanks to increased awareness about the perils of exposure to ultraviolet rays and skin damage, a greater number of people routinely apply sunscreen before spending time outdoors. But while people take steps to prevent sunburns, skin cancer and premature aging, they may fail to consider that UV rays also can damage their eyes. Just as people protect their skin from the sun, so, too, should they safeguard their eyes. Prevent Blindness America warns that the sun is comprised of UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays may hurt central vision by damaging the macula, or a part of the retina at the back of the eye. UVB rays typically affect the front part of the eye or the lens and cornea. The following are some common eye conditions that can be linked to exposure to UV rays.

A guide for health and well-being for you and your family. Always Practice Summer Sun Safety When the weather is warm, many people take time to relax at the beach or poolside. While such relaxation can provide a welcome break from busy schedules, it’s important that men, women and children prioritize protecting their skin when spending time in the sun. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, basal cell carcinoma, or BCC, is the most common form of skin cancer. The American Cancer Society notes that each year there are more new cases of skin cancer in the United States than the combined incidences of cancers of the breast, prostate, lung and colon. Despite that prevalence,

many people still engage in risky behaviors in the name of outdoor enjoyment. Being safe in the sun won’t take anything away from enjoyable outdoor activities, but exercising such caution will help summer revelers reduce their risk for skin cancer and other conditions. • Know the risks of UV exposure. Sunlight is needed to engage vitamin D production in the body, but too much sun exposure can do more harm than good. Ultraviolet, or UV, rays from the sun and other sources, such as tanning beds, are the primary cause of skin cancer. Exposure also can lead to sunburns, • Use only broad-spectrum SPF premature aging/wrinkling and eye sunscreen. Look for a sunblock product that boasts an SPF of at damage. least 30. The FDA requires any sunscreen with an SPF below 15 to carry a warning that it only protects against sunburn, not skin cancer or skin aging. Find a sunscreen that works against UVA and UVB rays as well. UVA rays are mostly responsible for contributing to skin cancer and premature aging. Reapply frequently, especially when swimming or engaging in activities that cause sweating.

• Know the difference between water-resistant and waterproof sunscreens. Manufacturers are no longer allowed to claim that their sunscreens are waterproof or sweatproof. A sunscreen may be

able to repel water for a short time, but it should be reapplied when leaving the water or when spending long stretches in the water. • Cover up whenever possible. It may seem counterintuitive in hot weather, but covering up can be beneficial to the skin and actually keep a person cooler. Wear widebrimmed hats, long-sleeve tops and light-colored pants. Some materials are made with reflective properties, while others actually boast their own SPF. Summer fun does not need to be threatened by overexposure to the sun. By exercising caution, everyone can spend quality time in the great outdoors all summer long.

• Propane tanks are constructed of heavy steel and are specially painted with a mastic coating to prevent corrosion. Environmentally friendly, a propane tank will typically last for 30 to 40 years. • Single-family homes can be fueled by tanks of varying sizes, depending on demand. Smaller 100-gallon tanks provide energy for appliances, while 1,000+ gallon tanks can fuel very large homes with additional energy demands, such as swimming pools, hot tubs, outdoor kitchens, and patio lighting. Generally, 500-gallon tanks easily accommodate an average four-bedroom home. • Once installed, underground tanks are scarcely noticeable except for filling connections and valves which are housed in a small dome protruding just inches above the ground. Standard landscaping is often done around the dome and over the spot where the tank is buried. • Can be installed FREE of charge. Certain restrictions apply. Balboa

Hello! I am sweet, handsome Balboa and I am looking for someone to turn my luck around. Are you that person? Sadly, I was just diagnosed with feline leukemia which will unfortunately shorten his life. Feline leukemia does not affect humans or dogs but it is best that I do not have any unvaccinated feline roomies. Please give Tania at the shelter a call and she can answer any questions you may have about me. I am healthy now though and looking for a foster/adopter to give me a home of my own. I adore attention (and treats). I promise that you will fall in love with me the way the volunteers at the shelter have! The CCC is in need of supplies, especially litter (Scoop Away), bleach, laundry detergent, dry and wet cat and kitten food (Purina/Friskies), paper towels, trash bags, and treats! Any help is very much appreciated! We are located at 289 Thompson Road in Webster and are open Thursday through Sunday 12pm-3:30pm. You can see more of our adoptable cats on Petfinder and Adopt-a-pet and we would love it if you would follow us and share our kitties on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com /pages/Community-Cat Connection/18375625177438. Please email us at info@ccatconnect.org for any questions!

The Cancer Center at Harrington Celebrates National Cancer Survivors Day. Southbridge, MA – More than 250 current and former patients and guests celebrated National Cancer Survivors Day on Monday, June 12 with the staff of The Cancer Center at Harrington and Radiation Therapy Services at a special dinner program under the tent at The Publick House Historic Inn on the Sturbridge common. The group was welcomed by event organizer Blaine Schnare, Harrington CFO Tom Sullivan and Cancer Center Medical Director Dr. Christopher Seidler who acknowledged associated professionals including Dr. Yasser Rehman, Donna Kentley, PA-C and Dr. T.J. Fitzgerald, Chief Radiation Oncologist with Radiation Therapy Services, a division of 21st Century Oncology. “It is indeed inspirational to look out over an audience with so many survivors present,” Seidler said. “This is clearly a community that cares.” National Cancer Survivors Day is an annual celebration of life that is held in hundreds of communities nationwide, usually on the first Sunday in June. It is a celebration for those who have survived, an inspiration for those recently diagnosed, a gathering of support for families and an outreach to the community to honor cancer survivors and to show that life after a cancer diagnosis can be fruitful, rewarding and even inspiring.

Those were some of the main themes touched on by professional triathlete Karen Smyers, the evening’s guest speaker. Smyers inspired the audience with her story of how she rose above the challenges of a severed hamstring muscle by broken glass, a timeout for the birth of her daughter, a knockdown by an eighteen-wheeler while cycling, a broken collarbone and a battle with thyroid cancer, which prompted Sports Illustrated to name her “The Triathlete Most Likely to Be Eaten by a Shark” in Sydney. Instead, she came back to win her seventh Elite National Championship title in August of 2001, just a week shy of her 40th birthday. “It was a message of hope,” said Harrington’s Executive Director of Satellite Operations and Cancer Center, Pam Zouranjian Connor. “Karen made a point of reminding us that a positive attitude and the right perspective can go a long way toward returning to good health.” The Cancer Center at Harrington provides treatment for oncologic and hematologic disease. Services include infusion therapy, pain management, nutrition and genetic counseling, lymphedema treatment and patient navigation. The Center’s staff is committed to ensuring the delivery of the highest standard of patient-family care as they navigate through diagnosis, treatment, recovery and survivorship in a convenient local setting on the Harrington Hospital campus at 55 Sayles Street, Southbridge, MA. The Center is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and may be reached by calling 508-764-2400.
