Caliana

My name is Caliana and I'm much too pretty for my cage. Some people say I look like a miniature bobcat with my black-tipped ears, but I think my sparkling green eyes are my finest feature. I'm nine years old AND I still have all nine of my lives - you'll see how fit I am when you play with me! If my playmates are children, I purrfur them to be older and human. Other animals really, really aren't my cup of milk. I hope I don't have to respect yours too much though, because I love to nuzzle up against your legs when you'll let me and I insist that you pet me on a regular basis. You won't be able to resist when you feel how soft I am. If you think we're a match, come see me and let me choose you fur life. The CCC is in need of supplies, especially litter (Scoop Away), bleach, laundry detergent, dry and wet cat and kitten food (Purina/Friskies), paper towels, trash bags, and treats! Any help is very much appreciated! We are located at 289 Thompson Road in Webster and are open Thursday through Sunday 12pm-3:30pm. A Thank You from Rollie

After twenty years I have sold Rollie’s Variety and decided to retire from the business, embark on my next adventure and enjoy the fruits of my labor. I want to really thank you all and tell you how much I’ve appreciated your business and loyalty for the past two decades. To me, you’re more than customers; you’ve become friends. I sincerely hope the feeling is mutual. The same friendly faces you’ve become accustomed to will be remaining, so why not stop in and introduce yourself to Gary, the new boss. I truly expect you will receive the same friendly, courteous and fair service that has become a Rollie’s tradition over the years.

THE SECRET PLACES PESTS ARE HIDING IN YOUR HOME

(BPT) - Pests can be hiding just about everywhere - whether you can see them or not. When you know where to look, there are preventative measures you can take to help avoid a pest infestation problem in your home. Terminix shares details on the unexpected, "secret" places pests can be hiding. Sinks and drains One often overlooked area is the kitchen sink. When not properly sanitized, drains can become a breeding ground for pests like cockroaches, drain beetles and fruit flies. Cockroaches are one of the more common pests found in drains as they can access pipes when pushed up from sewers. Cockroaches survive in drains by feeding on available organic matter like grease, food waste and hair. Other drain-breeding pests include drain flies, which resemble tiny moths, and fruit flies. Drain flies breed in residue found in drains. Fruit flies are attracted to garbage residue found in drains, which can contain damp, organic matter in which to lay eggs, and is a good food source to feed young larvae. Use smaller drain mesh and drain cleaner to create a less appealing environment for drain flies and fruit flies. Ceiling light fixtures Bugs see UV lighting more clearly than humans, making ceiling light fixtures a common place to find insects. Flies, beetles, cockroaches and wasps are attracted to the warmth and light, which, unfortunately for them, typically results in an early death. Electrical outlets One of the most unexpected places pests hide is inside your electrical outlets. Ants, beetles and bed bugs have been known to hide in electrical Custom outlets and the voids behind the outlet plate. A pest controlKitchen technician may use a dry residual dust product to reduce any bugs that could be residing

there. If bed bugs are found in electrical outlets, it is likely there are more in other parts of the room or home, so call a professional to schedule a full home inspection. The kitchen pantry

Equally likely to welcome uninvited guests is your kitchen pantry and cupboards. Pantry pests can include moths, weevils, beetles and mice, all of which are attracted to food stored in the kitchen. Pantry pests can quickly contaminate batches of cooking and baking ingredients, such as flour, grains, spices and pricey nuts and dried fruits. Thankfully, there are plenty of ways to keep them out of your cabinets, including examining all packaging for damage; avoiding storing food in original cardboard and paper packaging and instead choosing airtight containers with sealing lids; buying smaller quantities of products and using them before expiration; consistently organizing and cleaning your pantry; and throwing away all contaminated food. For even more information on secret places pests may be hiding in your home, go to Terminix.com.

LIVING IT UP OUTSIDE BY BRINGING THE INDOORS, OUT

(NewsUSA) - For many, enjoying their outdoor space includes a poorly lit patio or deck with spartan, uncomfortable furniture, devoide of real style. According to the American Lighting Association (ALA), outdoor living can be just as captivating, high-tech and chic as life inside your home. Regardless of the season, it is becoming common to turn a patio, deck or outdoor space into an additional family room with modern amenities and beautiful furnishings. ALA-member lighting manufacturers are making this transition easier with expanded lines of decorative lighting rated for all-weather use.

"One of the things consumers are concerned about when shopping for lighting is durability," says Seidman. "It really has to be able to withstand the elements. With new technology, fixture finishes are actually built into the material so that it weathers beautifully."

It's fairly commonplace to use sconces to highlight doorways and step lights to define spaces; today's homeowners are also hanging elaborate chandeliers and colorful pendants over outside tables. Spotlights can be seen above grills and downlights under covered patios. With a little creativity and imagination, just about anything goes. And the demand is increasing for those fixtures to mimic the styles and attention to

"People want to extend their indoor living space outside, and still have the same quality of finishes outside as inside," says Rick Seidman, president and CEO of Quoizel, Inc. "They're putting rugs, televisions and furniture outside, so we almost have to treat [outside] decorative lighting as if it's interior." Just because the newest outdoor lighting fixtures are beautiful, don't assume they lack the engineering to withstand harsh temperatures and extreme weather. High-quality outdoor fixtures are designed for reliability and endurance.

Hinkley Lighting's CEO Rick Wiedemer, CLC, explains how the trend of accessorizing outdoor areas with traditionally indoor lighting products has gained momentum over the last several years. "It started with landscape lighting and then moved into sconces, wall sconces, and now pendants and chandeliers," Wiedemer says.

detail traditionally found indoors.

Wiedemer concurs."You want to have something that's meant to be in the weather. Normally a rustic finish fixture will weather better," he says. "The principal thing these are engineered for is to be rained upon. Rain will not collect inside the fixture, it will drain out…. A typical interior fixture is not made that way." The latest all-weather lighting is at your local ALA-member showroom.

As unsightly as it can appear, leaf spot is often harmless. But homeowners can take steps to prevent it and stop it from spreading to healthy leaves.

SPRING HOME & GARDEN

WHEN TO TACKLE WEEDS IN YOUR LAWN

Weeds are the bane of lawn and garden enthusiasts. Weeds can spread rapidly and overrun pristine grass, choking lawns and robbing them of their lush green look. In garden beds, weeds can steal water from thirsty plants, threatening their survival. A proactive approach that prevents weed growth is easier and less frustrating than dealing with weeds after they have sprouted. That means addressing weeds before they release seeds, and not waiting so long that the damage is already done. According to the home and landscape experts with This Old House, spraying herbicide for weeds in June and July can address weeds before seeds are set. Tilling and installing a new lawn in late August or the beginning of September can help the lawn establish itself before the first frosts arrive, all the while avoiding weed growth. The weed control experts at Roundup also suggest a springtime application of weed killer if this is the desired route. Early treatment can prevent weed roots from spreading too far in the soil, which can reduce the chances that application. This ensures that all weeds that have surfaced are addressed and that none are missed by weeding too early. weed remnants will be left behind to grow at a later time. The Idaho-based Town & Country Gardens suggests lawn and garden enthusiasts wait to tackle weeds. By waiting and applying weed treatments in the fall, when dandelions and other weeds are absorbing food and nutrients in larger quantities to survive winter, homeowners can rid their lawns and gardens of weeds efficiently.

Homeowners with small lawns or gardens or those who prefer handweeding or using nonchemical ways to treat weeds must take steps to address the weeds early. Gardeners can try suffocating weeds by placing wood, blocks or plastic over them. Wet newspaper used as mulch can block weed formation and also clear patches of unwanted grass so that garden beds can be mapped out. Pouring boiling water on weeds or pulling them by hand is more effective when roots are young and have not yet spread.

Weeds are a nuisance and an eyesore in lawns and gardens. Choosing the right time to treat them can ensure they don’t adversely affect lush The UK-based company Lawnsmith also suggests a mid-spring weed killer landscapes and thriving gardens.

KNOW WHICH PLUMBING PROJECTS NEED A PRO (NewsUSA) - Plumbing projects can seem daunting to many homeowners, and when done incorrectly, they can be messy and disastrous to your property. In addition, poorly performed plumbing repairs can be expensive. You may spend more money on a plumber who has to fix your mistakes in addition to repairing the initial problem. Most homeowners are capable of fixing a simple leak, at least enough to prevent further damage until a plumber arrives. Early detection is the key, and several products are available that are designed to help identify small leaks before they become big problems. One such product is the FloLogic System, which monitors the water supply in your house from a single

15

location in the main. If the water flow exceeds a preset limit, indicating a possible leak, the system acts like a circuit breaker, shuts off the water, and sounds an alarm. There are several other plumbing projects that an energetic do-it-yourself homeowner can tackle, including: • Hoses and shower heads. Replacing shower heads and washing machine hoses isn't difficult, but make sure you know which replacement parts to buy before getting started. If you need to replace the shut-off valves in a shower or tub, however, it's best to call a professional plumber, because an incorrectly installed valve can lead to a flooded bathroom. • Pipe insulation. If you have the time and inclination, seek advice from the experts at your local home repair store so you have the right jackets, boards, moldings, mats and tapes. Once you have the right items, and if you are prepared for cramped spaces, you can take on insulating your own pipes. For a major installation, such as a water heater, don't try it yourself. It's an expensive project, but once it's in place, it should last for 15 to 20 years, so it's worth having it done by a professional. And, of course, small leaks can turn into big problems, so once you have identified and temporarily contained a leak, call your plumber to have the leak evaluated and fixed.

DOS AND DON’TS FOR SECOND-FLOOR LAUNDRY ROOMS Laundry can be a cumbersome chore. In homes with more than one story, clothes are put in a hamper, carried down to the washer and dryer, where they are then cleaned, dried, folded, and taken back upstairs to be put away. The entire process can be inefficient, which may contribute to why so many people delay doing laundry for as long as possible. As unenjoyable as it can be, doing laundry is a necessity. Fresh clothing not only looks and smells good, it is essential to personal hygiene. One way to make the process of doing laundry go more smoothly is to consider moving the location of the laundry area. According to the National Association of Home Builders, more homeowners are moving their laundry rooms upstairs so they don’t have to transport laundry baskets up and down the stairs. Before moving their laundry rooms, homeowners should take steps to safeguard their homes, and that may involve finding the ideal location for the new room. Find space for an upstairs laundry room and then consult with an engineer to be sure that the plan is feasible. An engineer and an architect can assess if a home is structurally sound enough to handle the weight and vibration of an upstairs laundry. One of the biggest concerns with regard to moving a laundry room upstairs is the fear of flooding or leaks. There are certain steps to take to minimize these risks. Experts advise installing an easily accessible water shut-off valve. Turn off the valve when the washer is not in use. Also, steel-braided washer hoses are more sturdy than standard hoses and are less likely to burst. Homeowners also can place the washer in a drain pan, which will catch overflowing water and drain it through a pipe. Some areas may require a floor drain as an alternative. Homeowners also must recognize that noise can be a problem with upstairs laundry rooms. Front-loading appliances may cause more vibration and movement than top-loaders. However, some front-loaders are designed to be quiet. Antivibration pads may help with vibration issues. Before moving their laundry rooms, homeowners should consult with contractors to ensure things go smoothly.

INTRODUCE EARTHWORMS INTO THE GARDEN Gardeners eager to revitalize their lawns and gardens may spend hundreds of dollars on tools and products designed to improve soil and growing conditions. Although many of these items can be advantageous, gardeners also may want to look to nature’s best garden helpers: earthworms. It is believed that nearly 3,000 different types of earthworms inhabit the planet. Worms have been around for hundreds of millions of years. Worms can be seen as bait dangling on fishing lines or as meals for redbreasted robins. But these subterranean dwellers play their biggest role beneath the soil. Earthworms move through dirt as they search for food. The worms consume particles in the soil, helping to recycle materials like dead leaves, plant parts, decaying animals, and feces. Through their travels, worms also serve to aerate the soil. Worms bring the subsoil closer to the surface and mix it with the topsoil. Earthworms’ castings also help naturally fertilize the areas in which they reside. The slimy mucus that worms leave behind very rare, however. WITH MORE BUYERS OUT THERE, THESE HOME UPGRADES CAN REALLY PAY OFF (NewsUSA) - Sponsored by GAF - It's time to stop thinking of Millennials as totally uninterested in owning anything just because they were early adopters of Uber. The newly released U.S. home ownership rate rose in 2017 for the first time in 13 years - it now stands at 64.2 percent driven mainly by a shift towards owning over renting by the under-age 35 crowd who'd been wary of committing for both financial and personal reasons.

"They want to use their brains for other things, not for remembering whether they adjusted the heat or closed the garage door," Angie's List stressed. •Cross-generational: a new roof. It's the ultimate curb appeal enhancer and a perennial Remodeling magazine A-lister, with Credit.com having observed that "buyers pay a premium for one already in place."

"This is happening because young households are buying homes. Full stop," Ralph McLaughlin, chief economist at home listings provider Trulia, told the Wall Street Journal.

So if the first thing prospects notice even before exiting their cars looks like something out of "Twister," you've got a problem.

They're not the only purchasers, of course. Which means if you're looking to sell your house now or in the not too distant future, you might want to check out this generational roadmap to four upgrades experts say are worth it to help attract potential buyers. • Cross-generational: a new steel door. The only thing that beat it on Remodeling magazine's annual Cost vs. Value Report for 2017 was loosefill attic insulation, but this project - with a 90.7% return on investment - speaks directly to the report's main takeaway: "Curb appeal projects, by and large, generated higher returns on investment than work done inside the home." Plus, as far as Millennials go, while their ideal interiors may differ from older generations - for example, they prefer open floor plans and hardwood floors - Architectural Digest says they're still into "traditional exteriors." • Millennials: smart-home tech. Yes, there are Boomers and Generation Xers who are super tech savvy, but Millennials especially crave homes that allow them to control their heating, air-conditioning, home security, and lighting systems from their phones.

"It's a huge turn-off," said Patsy O'Neill, a sales associate with Sotheby's in Montclair, New Jersey, "and makes buyers of all ages predisposed to find even more things they don't like." If your roof does need replacing, those particularly interested in targeting Millennials might want to consider the very affordable Sienna line of diamond-shaped shingles from GAF (gaf.com), North America's largest roofing manufacturer, since they capture that generation's sensibilities. "They pick up on key Millennial style trends of natural, clean materials, clean lines, and the integration of artistic elements," said Leslie Franklin, executive director of residential marketing at GAF. • Millennials: all-new appliances. Realtors will tell you that major kitchen (and bath) upgrades aren't generally worth their high costs, in terms of return on investment, since prospective buyers' tastes can clash with yours. However, Millennials do love, love, love all-new stainless steel appliances. So much so that what RealtyTimes.com called "an astonishing majority of 75 percent" of respondents in a recent survey chose to spend their hypothetical home buying budgets on them.

POOLS AND LAWNS CAN GET ALONG Homeowners interested in installing pools in their backyards need not worry about the potential impact of such decisions on surrounding landscapes. According to the Association of Pool & Spa Professionals, there are 10.4 million residential and 309,000 public swimming pools in the United States. Although the average monthly temperatures in Canada are lower than those throughout much of the United States, many Canadian homeowners still have pools in their backyards. Quebec is home to the most pools per capita for Canada — with some estimates suggesting the province has more than 300,000 backyard pools, according to Pool and Spa Marketing magazine.

the selectivity of grass. Blades of grass are particular about which nutrients from the water they absorb and in what quantities. Lawns are largely unaffected by chlorine. Furthermore, soil can withstand chlorine when kept at applicable sanitary levels (which generally range between two to three parts per million), at high acid levels. That’s much more than is usually contained in pool water. Pool water is also maintained in the neutral range at a pH of 6.5 to 7.8, which is safe for plants. Should the pool water test at a higher acidity or alkalinity, it can adversely affect landscapes, particularly delicate plants.

Many homeowners wonder if the chlorine and other chemicals in pool water have any affect on the lawn, particularly if pool water robs lawns of vital nutrients they need to thrive. But the resource All About Lawns says most people needn’t worry about errant drops or even higher levels of overflow. It all comes down to WE SELL FUN!

SAVE WATER BY STOPPING LEAKS EARLY (NewsUSA) - Water is a limited and essential resource, but too many people are unaware of how much is wasted. Believe it or not, the average American family uses more than 300 gallons of water each day, and 70 percent of that water is used inside the home. Unfortunately, much of that water is wasted without a homeowner's knowledge.

Delay Dishes Wait until the dishwasher is full before running it; a half full load wastes both water and electricity. Improve Appliances Data suggest that high-efficiency water-saving devices, such as low-flow showerheads and toilets, could save U.S. households 5.4 billion gallons of water and $11.3 million each day, and the low-flow devices that are currently available don't sacrifice water pressure for efficiency. But if more efficient bathroom fixtures aren't an option, simply taking shorter showers can save two to five gallons of water per minute.

Water leaks are among the main sources of wasted water in the home, accounting for as much as 13.7 percent of a household's water use. That's more than the top household water uses, which include taking a shower, running the dishwasher or doing laundry. However, some simple tips can help homeowners conserve water, prevent damage caused by leaks and save money on repairs caused by water damage. Launder Less Do fewer larger loads of laundry instead of more smaller loads. A larger load uses less water per pound of clothes.

LLC

Get a Grip on Leaks New leak detection products can help homeowners identify leaks early, so they can be managed before water damage sets in. The FloLogic System, for example, serves as a circuit breaker for the plumbing system in the home, sending an alarm and shutting off the water supply when a leak is detected. This early detection feature is key to preventing water damage associated with an unidentified and unrepaired leak. As an added bonus, some insurance companies will provide discounts to homeowners who install systems such as FloLogic. For more details about how the FloLogic System can help you save water, and money, by managing leaks, please visit www.flologic.com.

THE BASICS OF MULCHING Mulch is available in various forms. Like other land and garden products, mulch can go a long way toward helping plants thrive. Mulch comprises just about any material that is spread over the surface of soil. Its purpose is primarily to help soil retain moisture. In addition, mulch can staunch weed growth, keep soil cool, improve the aesthetics of garden beds, and even improve soil nutrient composition. When the right mulch is chosen, it can reduce the amount of time homeowners spend watering and weeding their gardens and insulate plants from dramatic changes in weather.

contain beneficial microorganisms that can fight against plant diseases. Inorganic mulches may be made of stones, landscape fabrics and plastic. Both types will need to be amended or replaced as they degrade. Those who want the most environmentally-friendly mulching materials can choose all-natural mulches instead of synthetic alternatives. To work effectively, mulch should be applied in a two- to three-inch layer of material, state the experts at Old World Garden Farms. This is the ideal amount to retain soil moisture and suppress weed growth without choking plants. Also, mulch that is too thick may make it impossible for water to penetrate, or it may prevent the soil from airing out, causing continuously wet conditions that lead to root and stem rot.

Gardeners may not realize that mulch also can prevent garden soil from becoming overly compacted, according to HGTV. This can mean beneficial earthworms can move easily through the soil, creating channels for water and depositing their nutrient-rich waste products.

The University of Connecticut Home & Garden Education Center says mulch should not be placed directly against plant crowns or tree bases, as this can promote the development of disease. It may also serve as a habitat for bark- and stem-eating rodents. The center also suggests watering newly installed bark or wood mulches to prevent fungi from colonizing in dry mulch and causing problems like a waterrepellent surface on the mulch.

Gardeners can choose organic or inorganic mulch. Organic mulches are derived from natural materials that will decompose over time, lending organic matter as well as various nutrients to the soil. Organic mulches also may

Home landscapers considering mulch types may find that compost, manure and grass clippings (from nonpesticide-treated lawns) can be inexpensive and versatile in garden beds. The home advice site The Spruce notes that newspaper may also be effective. Many newspapers have switched over to organic dyes, especially for their black and white sections. Newspapers are an inexpensive way to suppress weeds and act like organic mulch in beds. They can be covered with other organic mulch, like shredded bark, for more visual appeal.

HOW TO SELECT INTERIOR FINISHINGS FOR YOUR HOME (NewsUSA) - Sponsored News - When building or renovating a home, the use of interior finishings can help create a finished and unique look . Interior finishings can include trim or moulding, wall treatments, interior doors, posts and columns, stairway systems, and ceiling treatments. Here are some tips and tricks from interior design experts at Metrie to help you choose the best interior finishings based on your style and home: • STYLE: There are endless options when it comes to moulding profiles. It's important to consider the style of your home, both inside and out when selecting the right moulding, along with the lifestyle, personalities and design preferences of those living in the home. Metrie has a fantastic online resource at Metrie.com called Room Styler to help guide the selection process. • TYPE: Primary trim is used in most home installations and includes baseboard, casings and crown mouldings. They are the most functional trim elements and help set the tone of a room. Design enhancing trim such as chair rail, panel moulding and architraves add extra dimension and flair to any room. Ornamental trim, a decorative trim, helps warm up a space; corner blocks, plinth blocks, rosettes and Ikons are part of this category. To help ease the chaos of choice, Metrie has designed the Then & Now Finishing Collections, the industry's first coordinated finishing elements consisting of moulding, trim and interior doors sized and proportioned to fit together with ease and precision. • MATERIAL: Choose a material based on application and the finished result desired -- options can range from solid wood species, to MDF to faux wood and flexible moulding options.

• SIZE: The choice should be based largely on the ceiling height of the room. In many cases, there are complementary profiles that can be used in a home with varying ceiling heights. The size may vary, but the style should remain consistent room to room. • APPLICATION: Trim can be used in a number of non-traditional ways, such as creating door headers, wall treatments or frames, and can be layered or built-up for a unique or custom look. Planning the design in advance can ensure that all of the necessary products are ordered at one time, reducing down time in the project.

SPRING HOME & GARDEN

ADDRESSING SPRING ANT PROBLEMS The return of warm weather in the spring often marks the return of animals and insects as well. The spring season is a popular time for insects to mate and build nests. This also may be a time when homeowners see ant “swarms” in or around their homes.

or books to identify the species of ant on your property. Knowing which species of ant is in or around your home can help you address the problem more effectively. • Create a food trap. Ants are attracted to various food sources, such as fats, sweets and proteins. Mixing a very small amount of a food with boric acid can help control ant populations. Ants will bring tainted food back to their colonies and perish.

Ants and termites are social creatures, and when their colonies become too large, flying ants will spread out in search of new territories and to establish new queens. This mobility may also be coupled with an increasing number of ants marching on the ground and scaling walls. Although many species of ants are harmless, homeowners do not want to see ants inside their homes — especially in large numbers. The following strategies can help homeowners address ant infestations this spring. • Identify the type of ant around your property. Consult with online guides

• Keep a clean house. Use vinegar, soap and water to clean areas where ants are seen. Many leave a scent trail of pheromones to tell others where to go for a food source. • Treat carpenter ants at the source. Carpenter ants will not bring back food to the nest. Instead, sprinkle diatomaceous earth, or DE, around outdoor nests to eradicate colonies. • Work with an exterminator. If home remedies do not work, consult with a trained exterminator.

ADD FIRE SAFETY TO YOUR FAMILY'S ROUTINE (BPT) - Think of all the items you replace regularly - your cellphone, lightbulbs and even your toothbrush. But when was the last time you replaced your smoke alarm batteries, or even the alarms themselves? It's easy to overlook, but the time to think about ďŹ re safety is now - before an emergency strikes. Many assume that because they have smoke alarms in their homes, they're protected in the event of a ďŹ re. In reality, smoke alarms need to be installed, maintained and tested regularly to ensure they're working properly. That effort includes knowing how old smoke alarms and their batteries are, as neither lasts forever. While smoke alarm lifespan and sensing technology have improved in recent years, the fact remains that all smoke alarms even hardwired and sealed battery models - expire after 10 years. "According to the National Fire Protection Association (www. nfpa.org), three out of ďŹ ve home ďŹ re deaths occur in homes without smoke alarms or from missing or dead batteries," said Tarsila Wey, director of marketing for First Alert. "Just like other household duties, it's important to make sure alarm maintenance and replacement and escape planning and practice become a regular, ongoing part of your family's routine." First Alert offers the following advice to ensure your family is best protected from ďŹ re. Count the alarms - In most cases, one alarm isn't enough. In fact, the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA), recommends smoke alarms be installed inside every bedroom, outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home, including the basement, as well as one carbon monoxide (CO) alarm on each level and in each sleeping area. A quick and easy way to remember is one on every level and in every bedroom.

so high placement provides a direct path for detection. Lastly, don't install smoke alarms near windows, doors or ducts, where drafts might interfere with their operation. Get complete coverage - In general, there are two types of ďŹ res - quick aming and smoldering. Today's smoke alarms are effective at detecting both but use unique technologies that make them better suited for particular locations within the home. The NFPA and other safety advocates recommend installing dual-sensor alarms like the First Alert 10-Year Battery Dual Sensor Alarm because they provide the best potential for early detection of all types of common household ďŹ res while helping to reduce the number of non-emergency alarms - all while providing a decade of protection without the need for costly and ongoing battery replacement. Install and maintain - Having smoke alarms is only one part of the story. In order to function properly, all alarms must be regularly inspected and maintained. Make sure to test the alarm, by simply holding down the test button, at least once a month. Also, when testing, it's important to clean the alarm to remove any dust or debris. This advice holds true even for newer alarms, which feature 10year batteries, as well as hardwired alarms that feature a battery backup. Check or replace the battery when you change the time on your clocks each spring and fall. Plan your escape - Maintaining alarms is essential to every household, but what about your escape route? Unfortunately, recent research indicates that just 25 percent of families have an escape plan that they practice regularly. To develop an effective plan, walk through your home and inspect all possible exits and escape routes. Identify two ways out of each room, including windows and doors. Practice your home ďŹ re escape plan at least twice a year and make sure to plan a meeting spot.

Install them properly - Does your alarm ever sound when cooking? Chances are, you've installed the alarm too close to your appliances. For more ďŹ re safety tips, visit www.ďŹ rstalert.com. An easy way to reduce false alarms and maximize coverage is to take a moment to review manufacturer guidelines and install alarms in the proper locations. Smoke alarms should generally be installed at least 10 feet from a cooking appliance to minimize false alarms. It's also recommended to install smoke alarms high on walls or ceilings. Remember, smoke rises,

IS YOUR HOME AS CHILDPROOFED AS YOU THINK? (NewsUSA) - Sponsored News - It happens more often than we like to think. Nearly seven times a day, some young child is rushed to the emergency room after being burned -- or worse -- from having stuck something as innocuous as a paperclip into an electrical outlet, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. Ah, but being the diligent parent you are, you're sure those plastic outlet caps you installed for childproofing purposes will keep your own kids safe, right? Not so fast. A study conducted by Temple University found that it took less than 10 seconds for 100 percent of children ages 2 to 4 to remove them from sockets. And that should scare you for an additional reason. "It poses a choking hazard for small children," says Brett Brenner, president of the nonprofit Electrical Safety Foundation International (Esfi. org), which promotes electrical safety in homes and workplaces. "And because plastic caps do need to be removed for the outlet to be functional, there's the inherent safety threat of forgetting to recover the outlet when it's no longer in use." Brenner, as it turns out, also has a problem with the less-popular sliding receptacle covers. "They're no match for the impressionable minds of children, who can learn to defeat the devices by watching their parents plug objects into them."

To look at them, TRRs appear to be ordinary outlets -- a blessing for those who consider plastic caps a bit of an eyesore -- but they're specifically designed with spring-loaded receptacle cover plates that close off all openings or slots. Only by simultaneously applying pressure to both sides do the cover plates open to allow standard plugs to make contact with the receptacle contact points. "Without that simultaneous pressure," Brenner explains, "the cover plates remain closed, preventing the insertion of foreign objects and thus protecting children from painful, traumatic electrical injuries." The best part may be that the added safety will only run you 50 cents more than a standard electrical outlet, though TRRs should only be installed by a licensed electrician. But getting back to that opening U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission statistic -- know that of those nearly seven children a day: • 89 percent are under 6 years old. • 50 percent are 2 to 3 years old -- the highest risk group. • Boys are most at risk, regardless of age. Definitely not something we like to think about.

IT’S TIME FOR

So what does he recommend? The same technology -- called tamperresistant receptacles -- was deemed so effective that it's actually been required in hospital pediatric care facilities for more than 20 years. But it remained something of a trade secret until its use was finally mandated in all new home construction under the National Electrical Code in 2008.

TIPS TO PROTECT BIRDS IN YOUR YARD AND GARDEN (StatePoint) One of the best parts of backyard living in the warmer months is all the potential for bird watching that comes with it. You may have even installed a birdfeeder in your garden in an attempt to attract more birds to your property. But did you know, your home poses dangerous risks to the birds that visit your yard and garden? Window strikes are common among many species of migrating birds, and millions of wild birds are killed annually flying into windows.

“Turning your home into a refuge for birds is a simple way to save lives and protect the creatures that beautify your yard and, in the case of hummingbirds, pollinate your garden,” says Spencer Schock, founder of WindowAlert.

Whether you are an avid amateur ornithologist or just a casual observer of feathered friends in flight, by taking precautions your home need not be part of the problem. Take advantage of the fact that birds can see certain light frequencies that humans cannot to make windows visible to birds in a way that won’t obstruct your own view. Doing so can be a simple home project completed in just an afternoon. Try applying UV decals and UV liquid to your home’s windows and

While the coating will look like etched glass to the human eye, it will look very visible to a bird. As UV reflectivity may fade over time, it’s important to replace the decals and liquid every four months. Application techniques can be found by visiting WindowAlert.com.

Schock also recommends planting trees, shrubs and flowers that provide birds with nourishment and shelter, as well as paying attention to pet cats when they are outdoors, to ensure they don’t hunt the birds that visit. This season, be a better friend to birds by taking a few simple measures in your home and garden.

SPRING HOME & GARDEN

PREPARING GARDEN BEDS FOR SPRING AND BEYOND Gardening enthusiasts may have been thinking about their landscape plans throughout the winter, eager to once again get their hands dirty with soil. Whether a home gardener is making preparations for edible crops or beautiful flowers, he or she must take time to make the soil amenable to planting. To establish hearty, durable plants, gardeners can focus on three main areas: addressing soil composition, cultivating and adding nutrients. Soil composition Many gardeners prefer growing a variety of plants in their gardens. Such an approach requires taking inventory of the type of soil in one’s garden and making the necessary modifications so that the types of vegetables, herbs, shrubs, or flowers that will be planted can grow in strongly. In fact, according to the plant company Proven Winners, the most important step to developing good roots is preparing the soil. Take a sample of the soil and examine it to see what is present. If the soil is too full of clay, too sandy, too dense, or too loose, that can lead to problems where plants cannot grow in strong. Work with a garden center to add the right soil amendments to make a rich soil. This may include organic compost or manure, which will also add nutrients to the soil. Cultivation Cultivating the soil can involve different steps. Removal of weeds, errant rocks, roots, and other items will help prepare the soil. Mother Earth News suggests working on garden soil when the soil is damp but never wet; otherwise, garden soil can become messy and clumpy. Use a digging fork or shovel to lightly turn the soil when it’s mostly dry. Gentle tillings also can open up the soil to incorporate the nutritional amendments and relieve compaction that likely occurred from freezing temps and snow pressure. Tilling also helps with drainage and oxygen delivery to roots. The DIY Network suggests turning over soil at a depth of 12 inches to work the soil — about the length of a shovel spade.

GET A JUMP ON SPRING!

However, the resource Earth Easy says that existing garden beds have a complex soil ecosystem and simply top-dressing with compost or manure can be enough preparation for planting. Gardeners can experiment with the methods that work best for their gardens. Nutrition

Testing the pH and the levels of certain nutrients in the soil, namely nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium, will give gardeners an idea of other soil additions that may be needed. Soils with a pH below 6.2 often can benefit from the addition of lime several weeks before planting. Soil tests will determine just how much fertilizer to add to the soil. Complete fertilizers will have equal amounts of nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium. Individual fertilizers can amend the soil with only these nutritional elements that are needed. Top-dressing empty beds with a layer of mulch or compost can prevent weed growth and preserve moisture until it is time to plant. If existing shrubs or plants are in garden beds, use more care so as not to disturb roots or dig too deeply.

Smart Tax Tips IRS Phone Scam Intensifies During Filing Season

As taxpayers are working to file their taxes, criminals are also hard at work — attempting to steal their money. While there are several versions of tax scams, the classic telephone continues to thrive, especially during filing season. As a reminder, here’s how the scam works: • Scammers call taxpayers telling them they owe taxes and face arrest if they don’t pay. Sometimes, the first call is a recording, asking taxpayers to call back to clear up a tax matter or face arrest. • When taxpayers call back, the scammers often use threatening and hostile language. The thief claims the taxpayers may pay their debts using a gift card, other pre-paid cards or wire transfers. • Taxpayers who comply lose their money to the scammers. Taxpayers should remember that the IRS does not: • Call taxpayers demanding immediate payment using a specific payment method, but will first mail a bill. • Threaten to have taxpayers arrested for not paying taxes. • Demand payment without giving taxpayers an opportunity to question or appeal the amount the IRS believes they owe. • Ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone. Taxpayers who receive these phone calls should: • Hang up the phone immediately, without providing any information. • Report these calls to the: -Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration, using the IRS Impersonation Scam Reporting form, or by calling 800-366-4484. - Federal Trade Commission, using the FTC Complaint Assistant on FTC.gov, being sure to include “IRS Telephone Scam” in the notes. * Source: www.IRS.gov

What to bring to the Tax Preparer (NAPSI)—While a plate of cookies may be nice to bring a hostess, what your tax preparer would prefer (at least in the office) is that you bring in the proper paperwork. Here’s a list of the most likely paperwork to provide: What You’ll Need 1. Last year’s return, the last two years if this is your first appointment. Chances are much of the information—Social Security numbers, address and the like— will be the same, saving everybody time and reducing the risk of errors. 2. Your W-2. W-2s must be mailed to employees by January 31. They show your income and how much you’ve already paid in income taxes. If you’ve had more than one job this year, you need a W-2 form from each of them. 3. 1099s. If you’re a freelancer or part-time worker, you should have 1099 forms from everyone for whom you’ve worked this year. These forms are also used to report earned interest, cancellation of debt, dividends received and proceeds from broker transactions.

money donations. Keep a list of items and the values you assigned them along with the receipts for any household goods, toys and clothing donations. If you volunteer, keep a record of your mileage and other expenses. 5. 1098 forms. Homeowners can deduct mortgage interest. Also deductible are student loan interest and tuition paid to colleges and universities. 6. If you have a home office, you can deduct some of your rent, mortgage, utilities and so on. Bring any relevant receipts. 7. If you’ve been looking for work, bring receipts for whatever the search has cost you—transportation, paying to join a job search website, hiring a résumé writer or taking relevant courses. This list should get you started, but a tax expert such as an enrolled agent (EA) will let you know about any additional documentation needed to complete your return. Enrolled agents are the only federally licensed tax practitioners who specialize in tax matters and have unlimited rights to represent taxpayers before the IRS.
