The history of Christmas stockings Just when the excitement of opening presents abates after the last of the packages under the Christmas tree have been torn open, children and adults alike may discover that there are more treats to be had nestled inside of stockings hung on the mantle. The hanging of Christmas stockings is a tradition with an extensive history. Several legends attribute the hanging of stockings to different people or events. Here is a look at some of the stories that have made Christmas stockings so popular.

a merchant, his wife and three daughters. After the wife falls ill and dies, the man becomes devastated and squanders all of his wealth on frivolous things to mask his sadness. When it comes time for the daughters to marry, the man does not have money for a dowry. St. Nicholas hears of the plight and knows the man would be too proud to accept charity. Therefore, St. Nicholas anonymously tosses three bags of gold coins down the chimney. The man’s daughters had done the laundry prior and left their stockings hanging by the fireplace to dry. The gold landed in the stockings, thus starting the Christmas stocking tradition.

Italian good witch One stocking story does not attribute the tradition to Santa, but to a kind-hearted Italian witch named “La Befana.” La Befana arrives on a broomstick the night of January 5 and fills the stockings of good children with sweet treats and toys. Bad children are awarded lumps of coal. La Befana is also credited with being the old woman Dutch heritage One tradition says that, in 16th who the wise men ask for directions century Holland, children kept to Christ’s manger in the Christ their clogs filled with straw in front child’s story. Over time, stockings were swapped out for Christmas stockings have become part of holiday traditions, and clogs. this beloved tradition has its own unique history. Merchant’s family story St. Nicholas Day Rather than hanging stockings on Christmas, many countries celebrate Saint Nicholas Day on December 6, and this is when stockings are proudly left out for treats. 5 tips to keep sniffles and sneezes out of your holiday plans (BPT) - With the holidays upon us, there's a lot to look forward to: seeing old friends, eating too much, wearing ugly sweaters; the list goes on. Likewise, there are a lot of things that might make you sigh: awkward questions from your aunts, arguing about politics and of course, how you're going to work off all that extra weight in the new year.

Charlton/Southbridge Smart Shopper

MD, president of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI). "Those who suffer from allergies and asthma assume things will ease up once the cold weather hits, but there are other factors that can cause your allergies and asthma to flare. In fact, two-thirds of allergy sufferers have year-round triggers and symptoms." To help make the holidays as enjoyable as possible, here are five tips to manage your allergies this season.

An excuse to stay out of the hugging circle. There are a lot of hugs and kisses during the holidays, which can make it easy for germs and viruses to spread. Catching a cold or coming down with the flu is pretty awful, but because those illnesses make asthma and allergy symptoms even worse, those with allergies must take extra precautions. One "People don't realize how many more reason to avoid the mistletoe! hidden triggers are associated with the holidays and winter season," Watch out for that ... tree! For said allergist Bradley Chipps, many, picking out a Christmas tree One question millions of Americans should keep in mind this holiday season is how to best handle their asthma and allergies. While everyone else is singing along to carols and letting their food digest, others are tearing up, coughing and going into a sneezing fit.

is a holiday tradition. For others, a tree can be pure misery. Mold on the tree and terpene found in the sap can trigger allergies you thought you had under control. A much better option is to use an artificial tree - just be sure to dust it off! Dust allergies can be a problem year-round.

Keep an eye on holiday treats. Holidays are about food, and people usually share the food they make. As a result, you need to be extra careful about food allergies. If you or your kids have food allergies, let your host know what ingredients should be avoided. If you are hosting, prepare food you know everyone in your clan can eat. Your nose knows to sniff out those "pleasant" scents. People love to add those little touches to create a cozy holiday atmosphere in their homes. Unfortunately, scented candles, wood-burning fireplaces, aerosols and potpourri can trigger allergies and asthma. There are plenty of other nice touches you can add, but this year, forgo the scents! Leave the house prepared. Whether it's someone's lovable dog, a coworker wearing too much perfume or a moldy Christmas tree, many triggers exist out there. Before you leave the house, take your medications, and if your allergy and asthma symptoms worsen during the season, be sure to schedule an appointment with your allergist. If you need help with allergies, visit AllergyandAsthmaRelief.org to find a board-certified allergist in your area. ACAAI memberallergists are board-certified physicians trained to diagnose allergies and asthma, administer allergy shots (immunotherapy), and provide patients with the best treatment outcomes.

Baking shortcuts for time-pressed entertainers ‘Tis the season for baking cookies, cakes and other treats. However, during the holiday rush, it’s easy to get side-tracked or tired, and perhaps even a little bit overwhelmed by all the things to do in such a short period of time. Holiday baking doesn’t have to add to seasonal stress. With these tips and shortcuts, there will be plenty of sweet treats for the family. Stick with tested recipes Although holiday bakers may want to branch out a bit with their culinary creativity, recipes that have previously been prepared with great success can take some of the work out of holiday baking. Preparing recipes you recall preparing in the past is much easier than trying something new. If you’d like, add sparkle to old standards, such as decorating oatmeal or chocolate chip cookies with colored sprinkles. Cookies are fast-baking Did you know that cookies were originally made to test oven temperatures? Culinary historians say that cookies were first made to test if an oven was hot enough to bake other goods. Today, cookies can be whipped up in mere minutes. Make a batch of dough and then freeze or refrigerate it, thawing it when the time comes to bake. Also, think about baking one day and decorating the next if pressed for time.

Holiday havoc? Consider it handled (BPT) - The holiday season is full of magic and wonder - until your flight gets cancelled, your budget is blown and you fall ill at the worst possible time. Fortunately, staying merry despite common holiday conundrums is easier than you think with the right attitude and a few simple steps. Here are some of the most notorious holiday hurdles, with practical advice for overcoming them and enjoying the best of the season. Holiday hang-up: Blown budget The holidays can get expensive fast. Buying something for everyone on your list shouldn't put you in debt. Instead, think outside the box. Solution: Organize a gift exchange where each person draws one name and buys one gift. Additionally, consider homemade gifts to cut costs, as well as experiences, like taking kids sledding or ice skating.

Holiday hang-up: Sickness From holiday travelers being confined in planes and trains to loved ones gathering under one room for festivities, it's no surprise that germs are rampant during the holidays. Germs are not a gift anyone wants to receive and they can quickly strip a joyous occasion of all its fun. In fact, a recent survey by Robitussin found that 68 percent of people have been sick and miserable during holiday gatherings and 24 percent have had Try putting on comfy pajamas a holiday gathering ruined because and binge watching your favorite holiday movies while you rest up. a family member was sick. Call 508-943-5300 for more information. Flower Gallery Annual Toys for Tots Collection Day scheduled for December 9th Flower Garden Florist at 72 East Main Street in Webster is inviting their customers, friends and the entire community to again join them for their Annual Toys for Tots Campaign Collection Day. Last years event was such a success, that they would love for the community to come together again for this very important cause. Shop owner, Lisa Grzyb-Sullivan, is a Marine Corps Veteran herself, so the success of this fundraising event is very important and close to her heart. While serving with Headquarters Company, 25th Marines, Grzyb-Sullivan helped to coordinate the Program for the entire Worcester County area. Last year Lisa contacted the local Marine Corps Reserve Center and asked for their support in hosting a “Pictures with Santa and the US Marines Day” at her flower shop. The support of the Marines was outstanding. Not only did they provide a detail of Marines in Dress Blues, but they staged a HMMWE outside the shop for kids to explore and take photos in. That, along

with Santa’s presence throughout the entire day, put smiles on many local children’s faces. Local businesses also stepped in to add to the success of the day last year. Many thanks to Bank Hometown! They donated many, many toys to help the collection boxes overflow. Another example of kindness in the community came from East Main Café. One of their waitresses donated a Gift Basket in which their patrons bought raffle tickets for. All the proceeds were donated to buy more toys for event. Flower Garden welcomes these, and any other local business to join in to make this day a great success again this year! The 2017 Pictures with Santa and the Marines Day is this Saturday, December 9th, 10:00am-3:00pm, at Flower Garden, 72 East Main Street, Webster. Please join them by bringing a New, Unwrapped Toy for donation to the Toys for Tots Collection and you can take great photos of your children Santa and the Marines. It is awesome to share the meaning of the reason for this toy collection with children during this holiday season... Love and giving is the reason for the season.

FREE MARKET ANALYSIS!

Waterfront Property Specialist by Waterfront Owner and much more!

Real Results! Here I sit in a cage, overlooked and shy. Pay me some attention and help me to see why I haven't found a lovely home to last me all my days and entertain the family with my funny little ways. I'm such a friendly kitty when at last I know you well, and all I want is love and care and be your bestest pal. I love to play and every day I'll jump and chase and run to make you laugh, to cheer you up, until my playing's done. Although I have this FlV my life will not be sad I'll be a healthy, happy boy, the best you've ever had. I was a stray, but now I say I want to be your cat. So take me home and love me and that will then be that! The CCC is in need of supplies, especially litter (Scoop Away), bleach, laundry detergent, dry and wet cat and kitten food (Purina/Friskies), paper towels, trash bags, and treats! Any help is very much appreciated! We are located at 289 Thompson Road in Webster and are open Thursday through Sunday 12pm-3:30pm. You can see more of our adoptable cats on Petfinder and Adopt-a-pet and we would love it if you would follow us and share our kitties on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com /pages/Community-Cat Connection/18375625177438.
