DIRECTORY Is that 'Junk' in Your Attic or Basement Worth a Fortune? (StatePoint) From baseball cards and sports equipment to postcards and toys, is that “junk” in your attic or basement dusty treasure or just dusty? We’ve all heard of families getting rich from the sale of rare memorabilia. So how can you tell if your stuff is valuable and how can you sell it, if it is? “The general rule is that the older the item, the more valuable it is. 1980 is not old. 1960 is kind of old. 1910 is old,” says Al Crisafulli, Auction Director at Love of the Game Auctions, an internet sports auction house that has helped many families identify and sell valuable items. In one instance, Crisafulli determined that a family’s baseball bat that spent decades beside their front door to protect from intruders, was actually used by Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig -- and Love of the Game Auctions sold it for them for more than $430,000.

To Grow Happiness, Scientists Say, Send Flowers (NAPSI)—Sending flowers to show love, caring, and concern—whether for Mother’s Day, a birthday, an anniversary, or just because—is something people have done for a long time, and now science tells us there might be a biological reason why.
“Flowers have immediate and longterm effects on emotional reactions, mood, social behaviors and even memory,” note researchers at Rutgers University. “The simple presentation of flowers, even a single flower, will release a strong and immediate behavior reflecting positive affect. It’s possible that the flowers—either through their visual or odorous qualities—have effects on brain chemistry.” In fact, the researchers found that women
who receive flowers report positive moods as long as three days later.
• Know their favorites. Delight your loved ones by giving them the kinds of flowers they prefer. (And call ahead to ensure your florist can include those varieties.) Different blooms can carry different associations based on personal experience. Perhaps pink roses bring back happy memories of her mother’s rose garden, but orchids remind her of her aunt’s funeral. He might be partial to beautifullyscented varieties, such as lilies, freesia, lavender, or hyacinth— or maybe flowers with strong fragrances trigger his allergies.

About the artist: There are a variety of topics that inspires K. Monét’s collection as a whole but most of all it is heavily influenced by the night. At night all is dark except the moon and stars that shine brightly in the sky. They act as guidance and comfort in dark times thus symbolizing the hope that life has to offer us in order to persevere through any situation. Instead of looking at the negative side of dark times, she wants the viewer to stay in a mindset of calmness and self-reflection. Through careful selection of the colors and mediums ranging from acrylic paint to ink used, she creates these serene yet mysterious sceneries.
