How chocolate became tied to Valentine’s Day Heart-shaped boxes filled with decadent treats are coveted gifts on Valentine’s Day. Chocolate lovers typically have a favorite type of chocolate, whether it’s creamy filled truffles or chocolate pieces with fruit or nut fillings. The tradition of gifting chocolate is anything but new. Chocolate and other sweet treats have been offered for centuries as prized gifts. Even ancient Aztecs and Mayans celebrated chocolate and saw it as a hot commodity. Drinks made of cacao beans would be given as presents to people of high status. Chocolate also would be offered to the gods as a token of appreciation. Cacao beans were even used as a form of currency at one point.
across Europe. Chocolate houses cropped up in London, and the French elite often indulged in chocolate. Chocolate’s popularity continued to grow, but the dessert was not linked to Valentine’s Day until nearly 200 years later. In the mid-1800s, an enterprising individual named Richard Cadbury was looking for a way to make chocolate even more popular than it already was. He sought out a method to make drinking chocolate more palatable and created “eating chocolates.” These chocolates were packaged in decorative boxes. Eventually, Cadbury saw the benefit of putting images of cupids and roses on the boxes. Cadbury even designed chocolate boxes in the shape of hearts that could be saved as mementos. These chocolates soon became intertwined with Valentine’s Day celebrations.

commercializing chocolate as well. Hershey began as a caramel maker, but experimented with covering the caramels in chocolate in 1894. Hershey would go on to develop one of the most successful brands of chocolate in the United States, which included the famous Hershey bar. In 1907, Hershey launched production of tear-drop shaped “kisses.” (The chocolates were given their unusual name because of the “smooching” noise made by the chocolate when being manufactured.) The kisses became wildly popular and made for affordable chocolate gifts on Valentine’s Day.

Many other chocolate manufacturers soon began packaging their chocolates in special boxes for Valentine’s Day. Russell Stover and Whitmans are two such manufacturers who have long specialized in heart-
Chocolate has long been tied to Valentine’s Day gifting. Whether one believes that chocolate symbolizes heightened status, acts as an aphrodisiac or is just a special treat, chocolates will likely always be associated with the day of love.
Traditionally, men have gifted women with boxes of chocolate for Valentine’s Day. However, that role is reversed in other areas of the world. For example, in Japan, women give gifts — namely chocolates — to the men in their lives to express love, courtesy or social obligation. This tradition first began in 1936 when confectioner Morozoff Ltd. ran the first ever Valentine’s Day ad in Japan through a local English newspaper. By the 1950s, other Japanese confectioners were following suit.

Please may I talk to you? I'd like to be your friend. I'd like to come and live with you until the very end. Is your home a quiet home with love and caring in it? I'd like to come and play with you for minute after minute. I'm only 3 or 4 years old and very, very pretty. My grey bits and my white bits make me a gorgeous kitty. My long white whiskers, lovely face and calm and friendly eyes. Make me a little cat who will appeal to girls or guys. So come and fetch me please! To make your life complete and make me happy too. The CCC is in need of supplies, especially litter (Scoop Away), bleach, laundry detergent, dry and wet cat and kitten food (Purina/Friskies), paper towels, trash bags, and treats! Any help is very much appreciated! We are located at 289 Thompson Road in Webster and are open Thursday through Sunday 12pm-3:30pm. Bousquet's Appliance Charity Ice Fishing Derby THOMPSON, CT – Mark your calendars for the Bousquet's Appliance Ice Fishing Derby! On Sunday, February 18th Bousquet's Appliance located in Danielson, Connecticut is hosting a Charity Ice Fishing Derby from 8am to 1pm. On Sunday morning fishermen from all over will descend upon Valley Springs Sportsmans Club, 65 Valley Road, North Grosvenordale, Connecticut. The weather is looking promising for this ice fishing derby. Valley Springs Sportsman's Club is located in the quiet corner of Connecticut just minutes from the Massachusetts and Rhode Island borders. Valley Springs Sportsmans Club's private three and a half acre pond is stocked certain times throughout the year with Rainbow, Brown and Brook Trout. The entry fee is $50 per person and must be paid at the time of registration. Every fisherman gets two holes and all the holes will be pre-drilled so there is no need to bring your auger. Three fish may be kept from your catch. Catch and release is allowed but only with artificial lures. We ask that you please refrain from drinking alcohol until 11am. A breakfast buffet will be served for $7 per person. WINY Radio Station will be on hand doing a live remote broadcast. The event is open to the public, so invite your friends and family and see who can catch the biggest fish!
There will be various prizes including one $3,000 prize for special tagged trout, a big screen television for special tagged trout, and prizes for first, second and third longest trout. Anyone interested in participating in this February 18th event can register at Bousquet’s Appliance or Valley Springs Sportsmans Club or for more information please call Bousquet’s Appliance at 860-7745821 or Valley Springs Sportsmans club at 860-923-2121. Proceeds from this event support the Thompson Historical Society's mission to save the Ellen Larned Memorial Building. In 1902, Ms. Ellen Larned, Windham County's most famous historian and a native of Thompson, CT, dedicated a small library building on Thompson Hill. Now, a century later, that library building has been given a new lease on life thanks to the Thompson Historical Society. Society members Beth Greene and Barbara Weaver led a team of energetic volunteers for the better part of a year to create a wonderful addition to the Thompson scene. Beth Greene's creative spirit, hard work and determination to see the job through coupled with Barbara Weaver's outstanding administrative abilities have brought forth a museum worthy of Thompson's illustrious past. The museum opened officially September 6, 2003 and is located on Historic Thompson Common, Rte. 193, in Thompson CT.

6 common tax filing mistakes to avoid
February 7, 2018
www.SmartShopperAd.com
Here's a closer look at some common tax-filing errors and tips to help you avoid making them.
It's probably safe to say handing cash to Uncle Sam does not top the list of your favorite things. When it comes to filing taxes, making a small mistake can mean delays in processing refunds, paying more taxes than you need to or forking over cash to cover penalties.
Mistake: Not reporting all income. Reporting your income is easy if your employer sends you a wage statement (called Form W-2) documenting what you made throughout the year. But what about the money you earned from any freelance work? Unfortunately, many people forget to report extra Fortunately, there's an easy way income from side jobs such as to make sure your tax return is photography shoots, design projects mistake-free: just take a little extra and Etsy shops. time to double check that you have all your paperwork. A professional How to avoid the error: Depending Tax Preparation Specialist can help on how much you earned, you in letting you know exactly what may receive an "information you will need to bring with you for return" called Form 1099 from the your personal situation. institution that paid you. different types of income earned during the year, but in some cases you may not receive the document. For example, if you earn less than $600 as a freelance writer, the institution is not required to send you Form 1099-MISC. However, you still need to include the amount earned in your total annual income so it's important to keep your own records of each transaction.
return. "If you need help figuring out account information, don't be afraid to ask your bank for assistance," Jaeger says.
"To help accurately report your income, review last year's return and match your income sources item by item," says TaxAct Director of tax development, Mark Jaeger. "If you discover you haven't received a 1099 for your work, last year's return will serve as a reminder to ask about it. Keep in mind, all freelance or side-gig income is reported on Schedule C as part of your Form 1040."
How to avoid the error: Electronic filing (e-filing) is the quickest and most accurate way to file your tax return. In fact, the IRS typically processes e-filed returns within 48 hours. If you're due a refund, you'll get it quicker if you e-file and choose direct deposit. Your tax professional can help with this, to get you your refund as fast as possible
Mistake: Mistyping bank accounts and personal information. Believe it or not, incorrect bank account numbers or personal information like Social Security Numbers - is one of the main reasons tax returns are rejected. Using a nickname or a shortened version of your legal name also lands near the top of the list.
Mistake: Not e-filing. While 91 percent of tax returns were e-filed in 2016, there are still filers who file a paper return. Going the pencil and paper route often means longer tax return processing times.
Mistake: Incorrect calculations. When the IRS receives your tax return, one of the first steps the agency takes is to check the figures to make sure they add up. Unfortunately, it's easy to miscalculate numbers - especially if you're in a rush or aren't sure what to add or subtract.
How to avoid the error: First, take your time and double check all How to avoid the error: Double numbers. Second, consider using an - or triple - check any personal or experienced tax professional, who bank account information before will take any guesswork out of the you submit your completed tax equation.

Mistake: Using the wrong filing status. Choosing the wrong filing status, like Head of Household instead of Single, can have a great impact on your tax rates, the number of personal exemptions you can claim, your qualifications for certain tax deductions, credits and more.

How to avoid the error: Before starting your return, review the five different filing statuses to help you select the one most appropriate for your tax situation. Carefully selecting the right one will help you feel confident you're taking the right steps to maximize your tax outcome.

1. Last year’s return, the last two years if this is your first appointment. Chances are much of the information—Social Security numbers, address and the like— will be the same, saving everybody time and reducing the risk of errors. 2. Your W-2. W-2s must be mailed to employees by January 31. They show your income and how much you’ve already paid in income taxes. If you’ve had more than one job this year, you need a W-2 form from each of them. 3. 1099s. If you’re a freelancer or part-time worker, you should have 1099 forms from everyone for whom you’ve worked this year. These forms are also used to report earned interest, cancellation of debt, dividends received and proceeds from broker transactions.
money donations. Keep a list of items and the values you assigned them along with the receipts for any household goods, toys and clothing donations. If you volunteer, keep a record of your mileage and other expenses. 5. 1098 forms. Homeowners can deduct mortgage interest. Also deductible are student loan interest and tuition paid to colleges and universities. 6. If you have a home office, you can deduct some of your rent, mortgage, utilities and so on. Bring any relevant receipts. 7. If you’ve been looking for work, bring receipts for whatever the search has cost you—transportation, paying to join a job search website, hiring a résumé writer or taking relevant courses. This list should get you started, but a tax expert such as an enrolled agent (EA) will let you know about any additional documentation needed to complete your return. Enrolled agents are the only federally licensed tax practitioners who specialize in tax matters and have unlimited rights to represent taxpayers before the IRS.
4. Receipts for donations. Keep the receipts for all charitable event sponsorships, money or food for holiday charities and any other
