WEbster WEdnesdays at French River Park The WEbster Arts/Recreation Committee has a great summer in store for everyone and we continue on next week with The Bartlett High School Jazz Ensemble and Art Show. Come hear the sweet sounds of New Orleans style jazz at French River Park, WEdnesday, June 28th from 6pm-8pm. Under the direction of BHS band teacher Peter Twiraga, these students have flourished and their commitment to learning is apparent in their performances. Along with these musicians comes a display of BHS student artwork throughout the park. Art teachers Sean Harrington and Brittany Gyllenhammer have a very talented group of students on their hands! They just had a showing at Booklovers' Gourmet here in Webster and we are happy for the opportunity to bring it to you. As with the Booklovers' showing, these works will be for sale so bring cash!

Monday, June 19th marked The WEbster Arts/Recreation Committee's first 'Move it Monday'. This installment brought The Worcester Fencing Club to Town Hall. After giving a talk on the history and explaining some of the key elements, they gave a demonstration but were cut short by the monsoon that swept through. This won't be the last you will hear about these guys, but in the meantime, check out their website and summer classes for all ages! WEbster WEdnesdays continue to grow and we are excited to bring you a fantastic nine weeks of musicians, artists, crafters, doers and makers. Check in with the WEbster Arts/ Recreation Group Facebook page for up-to-date information and links to all of those who are participating in our Summer Concert Series and Farmers Market. June 29th Author Talk with Michael E. Neagle, Ph.D. “America’s Forgotten Colony: Cuba’s Isle of Pines” DUDLEY – The Pearle L. Crawford Memorial Library in Dudley will be hosting an author talk with Michael E. Neagle, Ph.D., Nichols College Assistant Professor of History on Thursday, June 29 at 6pm. America’s Forgotten Colony examines private US citizens’ experiences on Cuba’s Isle of Pines to show how American influence adapted and endured in republican-era Cuba
(1902–58). This transnational study challenges the notion that US territorial ambitions waned after the nineteenth century. Many Americans, anxious about a ‘closed’ frontier in an industrialized, urbanized United States, migrated to the Isle and pushed for agrarian-oriented landed expansion well into the twentieth century. Their efforts were stymied by Cuban resistance and reluctant US policymakers. After decades of tension, however, a new generation of Americans collaborated with locals in commercial and institutional endeavors. Although they did not wield the same influence, Americans nevertheless maintained a significant footprint. The story of this cooperation upsets prevailing conceptions of US domination and perpetual conflict, revealing that US-Cuban relations at the grassroots were not nearly as adversarial as on the diplomatic level. You see, when I first came to the shelter I lived in my litter box, I'm not kidding, I LIVED in my litter box! You ask any of the volunteers, I did not want to get out of there. It was GROSS! But people kept petting me and talking softly to me and they discovered the places where I liked to be scratched! So I became more confident. And now, I sit at the front of my cage and meow and try and get people's attention! How cool is that? I think that deserves a pet and a treat don't you? I am one brave young man!! Instead of Faze, I now declare my name to be Brave Faze! So please come and give me a pet and a treat! The CCC is in need of supplies, especially litter (Scoop Away), bleach, laundry detergent, dry and wet cat and kitten food (Purina/Friskies), paper towels, trash bags, and treats! Experts say it's never too early to teach compassion and empathy to children (BPT) - The news is filled with articles about the opinions and attitudes of the millennial generation and now, Generation Z. But what about the youngest generation - youths 4-9 years old? These children are growing up in a time of unprecedented access to information, when civility, kindness and compassion have taken a back seat to bullying and violence. Experts say it is more important now than ever for parents to seek learning moments in which children can experience compassion and empathy. The Jensen Project is a program designed to foster compassion, inspiration and courage in young people as a path to avoiding the bullying and sexual harassment prevalent on college campuses. The program examines the attitudes and opinions of young people with the goal of inspiring a gentler, kinder, more empathetic dimension in their lives.
