AD DEADLINE: Friday noon
Hello, Hallie here! I am a sweet young girl, only a year old. After coming to the shelter as a rescue, I have been in a foster home learning how to trust and love people, and got along well with my kitty brothers and sisters. I love gentle pets, wand toys, and treats. I am still a little shy so would need a quiet home and someone with patience to continue and help me bloom and grow. Will you be that special person to help me trust you with my beautiful green eyes, so I can become 'your little girl’?

HAPPENINGS Gary McKinstry Event to Benefit Harrington Auxiliary STURBRIDGE: The Harrington Auxiliary is proud to bring back Gary McKinstry, world-renowned, professional medium and psychic, to Old Sturbridge Village on Thursday, November 16, 2017 from 6 pm to 8 pm. This is an ideal opportunity to attend McKinstry’s presentation and connect with loved ones who have passed to the other side. McKinstry’s psychic activities are legendary and have been chronicled in Ghost Hunters of America: Real Stories of Paranormal Investigators. He is one of a handful of psychics to have toured the Victorian Mansion in Gardner, which he certified as definitely haunted. McKinstry has also verified that the Publick House in Sturbridge is haunted and has been since the Colonial era.
At the event attendees will have an opportunity to purchase tickets for two raffles. Proceeds from a 50/50 raffle will enable the Auxiliary to purchase equipment and provide community health programs that support Harrington Hospital’s mission. The second raffle entitles the winner to a one-hour private reading with McKinstry.
Your Guide to Local Halloween Events and Happenings!
Tickets for the event are $20 and can be purchased through Harrington Hospital’s Volunteer Office at 100 South Street, Southbridge. HALLOWEEN HAPPENINGS
HAPPENINGS Preserve carved pumpkins in various ways Jack-o’-lanterns and other carved pumpkin designs are frequently the centerpieces of Halloween festivities. The twinkling lights and orange glow of jack-o’-lanterns can add ambiance to any autumn event. The trouble with carving pumpkins is that most people want to do it right away, only to discover their pumpkins wilt and decay long before Halloween. Nothing ruins Halloween more than visiting a home to trick-ortreat and not getting candy. Equally disappointing is a sad pumpkin display withering away on a front porch. Even though all pumpkins will eventually rot, certain tips can keep carvings from collapsing too soon. • Choose a sturdy pumpkin. Inspect the pumpkin of your choosing carefully, looking for gouges, spots and holes. Even a small blemish can quickly expand into a mushy mess. Select pumpkins with even color and firm flesh, and make sure that the pumpkin doesn’t feel tender when you push on the skin.
• Visit local pumpkin stands. Pumpkins that have been shipped miles and miles in hot cargo trucks may be overly ripened or battered. Pumpkins that were grown nearby may be fresher. Plus, buying pumpkins locally supports local farmers.
• Coat the pumpkin. Preservation methods may aim to keep the pumpkin hydrated and inhibit mold and other microbial growth. Commercially sold pumpkin preservation products, such as Pumpkin Fresh®, hold up well. • Skip the carving. Once pumpkin skin is compromised, microbes can enter. In lieu of carving, paint or decorate pumpkins in other ways if you want them to stay fresh for a long time. Glow in the dark paint can help pumpkins stand out at night. Carved pumpkins may last a week or two, while uncut pumpkins can last for a month or more. Keeping pumpkins hydrated and mold-free will prolong your designs.
• Use an artificial light source. Reduce the heat inside of the pumpkin and encourage hydration by selecting a battery-powered light instead of a lit candle to illuminate the carving.

Horror flick “Night of the Demons” from Seven Arts Pictures combined Zombie Girl, Creature Feature, 45 Grave and more for a scarily popular soundtrack. Don’t deafen your guests: Although dancing is a non-negotiable necessity for good parties, we can’t ignore the minglers who thrive off stimulating conversation. Keep the volume cranked in one room and turn it down in another. The quieter music keeps the ghoulish festivity alive without killing all possible conversation. creep factor on your favorite drink with simple food coloring and use eyeball or fingernail gummies instead of lemon wedges and olives. Don’t spend extravagantly: Since adult beverages and food can add up, save money on decorations. Food coloring really is a blessing. Old white sheets and red food coloring create a gory, bloodspattered corner or table display. Keep lights turned low, or throw dark-colored scarves and pillow cases over your lampshades for a shadowy setting. Candles also provide an eerie element to any room.

HAPPENINGS Sugar skull tradition and Día de los muertos Halloween costumes may go away right after October 31, but the celebration of the macabre and spirits do not get buried so quickly. El Día de los Muertos (The Day of the Dead) is celebrated in central and southern Mexico during the early days of November. The day coincides with the Catholic All Soul’s Day and All Saint’s Day and incorporates many different traditions. One of the more recognizable traditions is the creation of “calaveritas de azúcar,” or “sugar skulls.” These are decorative or
edible skulls made from either clay or sugar, which are used in celebrations. The origin of these molded skulls can be traced back to the Spanish conquest of Mexico. Although the dead were already honored in Mexico, the Spanish brought their own customs, including molded decorations. Because sugar was readily accessible in Mexico and quite affordable, using it to make molds was a natural choice.

Adherents of this tradition believe that the gates of heaven are opened at midnight on October 31 and the spirits of deceased children can reunite and celebrate with their families for 24 hours. How to Optimize Your Home Office (StatePoint) The old 9-to-5 isn’t what it used to be. As more companies embrace telecommuting, a growing number of employees are finding that even in the professional realm, there’s no place like home. Here’s how to set up a home office for success. • Commission floor plans. It’s a good idea to have plans drawn up by an architect. Knowing your exact square footage has tax-savings implications: If your home office is your principal workplace, you may qualify for a home office tax deduction (for what the IRS calls “business use of your home”) based on the overall area of that space. Plus, an architect may be able to see beyond walls to find potential spatial configurations you might not have considered.
