To the Citizens of Southbridge, Southbridge is on the move! We have drastically improved the Town’s fiscal positon, have been cleaning blighted properties, and are working hard to improve economic development opportunities. Our Town has a long history of manufacturing optical products, earning it the unofficial title “Eye of the Commonwealth”, in reference to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Under the Wells family, the American Optical Company (“AO”) became the world’s largest manufacturer of ophthalmic products, and at its height employed more than 6,000 people around the world. The industrial revolution brought rapid growth to Southbridge, and with growth came varied neighborhoods and a historical downtown with Victorian architecture and large and shady streets. Today as a community we should be proud of the achievements over the last few years. Southbridge is now a “Green Community” and receives state grants, technical assistance, and other state support to reduce energy use and to implement clean energy alternatives. We are also excited to have purchased our first electric car and to have developed charging stations for those who come to Town Hall. The Southbridge Business Partnership is growing and working with the Town’s Economic Development Director to improve the business climate in Town. Our school system under state leadership and with strong support of the Town Manager and elected officials is working hard to provide a high quality education four our children. Our Town airport is seeing major infrastructure improvements such as a new administration building, new apron, and once again, the diner is open for business. We have invested in new Capital equipment, such as a rescue vehicle for our Fire Department, a snowplow for the DPW, and police cars that will serve the citizens of our Town for many years to come. Together we are building a better community for all to enjoy. We thank you for your commitment to our Town and look forward to working with all of you as we continue to build a better Southbridge!
Sincerely, Ron San Angelo, Southbridge Town Manager

On behalf of the Town of Southbridge, it is our pleasure to bring you this year’s annual Southbridge Town Guide. This publication contains relevant, timely information about programs, events, and services offered by the Town of Southbridge during the coming year. Our goal is to broaden the town’s ability to inform the residents of our community about the programs and services offered in the local area. To accomplish this goal, Smart Shopper has worked with the different departments and civic groups to produce this guide for insertion into Smart Shopper’s Southbridge circulation on September 12th. Extra copies will be made available at the town hall to be given to those who move to town after the general distribution so that we will reach as many families and individuals as possible. In addition, extra copies will also be available at the Smart Shopper office at 31 Thompson Road in Webster, MA. Smart Shopper has maintained a consistent presence in the community and we are excited to produce this guide for you, our readers. Thank you for submitting your community events this past year. We invite you to send pertinent information for this guide for next year as you set next year’s dates and create new events. Please send to our address by USPO or email to submitads@smartshopperad.com. We hope you enjoy this guide as much as we did in creating it.

The Quinebaug Valley Council for the Arts and Humanities (QVCAH), familiarly known as the Arts Center, is a membership association dedicated to perpetuating the arts and humanities in the area. The association was formed in 1977 by a group of people concerned with the role of the arts and humanities in the lives of local citizens – before the days of mandated local cultural commissions. As government funding for local cultural endeavors rapidly disappears, the role of the Quinebaug Valley Arts Center again becomes more important than ever in our lives and the lives of our children. QVCAH serves the following 25 communities in South Central Massachusetts and Northeast Connecticut: Massachusetts: Brimfield, Brookfield, Charlton, Dudley, East Brookfield, East Douglas, Holland, Leicester, Monson, North Brookfield, Oxford, Palmer, Southbridge, Spencer, Sturbridge, Wales, Warren, Webster, and West Brookfield. Connecticut: N. Grosvenordale, Pomfret, Putnam, Quinebaug, Thompson, and Woodstock.
