Southbridge Massachusetts • Town Guide • ANNUAL

Dear member of the Southbridge community, The Town of Southbridge is located just north of the Connecticut border. Our town has a long history of manufacturing optical products, earning it the unofficial title “Eye of the Commonwealth”. We are fortunate to have so many amenities; a new state of the art middle/high school, three elementary schools, a private catholic school, a beautifully proportioned downtown, full service fire and police, 3,000 acre watershed with a technologically advanced filtration plant, an expanded public library, well maintained wastewater treatment plant, a municipal airport, YMCA, attractive Town Common, full service hospital, four large parks, trails linking to US Army Corps of Engineers dam and recreation area, state conservation area with developed hiking trails, an arts center with galleries and amateur theater, WRTA bus service, a welcoming Community Center and more! Southbridge citizens celebrate diverse cultures who honor the historical nature of our town and yet are excited about the future and the opportunities that it will bring to our community. A future that has sustainable jobs, quality education for all children, and a pride in the community that shines throughout the state. We will strengthen this community further though partnership of all citizens and businesses to develop economic development opportunities, create a positive environment for all citizens, and continue to make Southbridge a great place to live, work, and raise a family. We welcome all to visit our community and enjoy all that we have to offer. Sincerely, Ron San Angelo, Southbridge Town Manager

The Library is closed New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, President’s Day, Patriots Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas Day. Also, the Library closes the Friday following Thanksgiving and closes early on Christmas Eve.

The first public library was established in the Town of Southbridge by public vote in 1870. In 1872, Holmes Ammidown, Esq. established and leased space on Main Street for the use of the town library. Through the generous bequest of Jacob Edwards, a new facility was erected on

the current location of the Library in 1914. Having long outgrown its original building, a major addition was added to the library in 1966; this wing included the current Reading Room, Director’s Office, and the Holmes Ammidown History Room. A major expansion and renovation was completed in 2000, thus increasing the library facility to its current size of 33,000 sq. ft. For a complete history of the library see our book - The First Century: Jacob Edwards Library, Southbridge, 19142014.
