For twelve years, my name has been Shiloh. For twelve years, I had a purrent who loved me and I loved them too. I loved them so much that I was also friendly with family because that's where I felt safe. But everyone knows that worlds can be turned upside down when your companion passes away suddenly, and that's a tearful reality that I'm still coping with. It's been a few months since it happened, and some incredible people even tried to take me in as their own. I'll always save them an extra cuddle for that, but the truth is that I need to be your only cat. I have enough sass and swagger for two fabulous felines half my age, and another whiskered friend is just too much for me. You'll never feel like you're missing out though, because I need a cat experienced owner who is willing to give me as much effort as I will return once I know that you aren't leaving me any time soon. The slowest hands will yield the most purrs, and I hope someone out there understands enough to connect with me. I could be around for a long time!

‘TIS THE SEASON

Pets and holiday gifting Furry, finned and feathered friends help make a house a home. These companions are more than just pets; they’re often cherished family members. So it should come as no surprise that, come the holidays, people want to lavish extra attention on their animals by way of presents. The American Pet Products Association says pet owners spend billions of dollars on their pets each year. The majority of pet owners plan to gift their pets on holidays such as Valentine’s Day, Halloween and Christmas. DogTime.com says that pet presents are not a North American phenomenon, either. Pet owners in the United Kingdom are expected to spend the equivalent of $46 U.S. per pet on gifts.

While dog owners are more likely to buy their pets gifts, cat owners have been closing that gap over the years. Some pet parents even offer Christmas cards or hang Christmas stockings for their pets.

a reputation that few plants would want.

First discovered in Mexico and brought to the United States by Dr. Joel Poinsett, the poinsettia has long been rumored to be poisonous. However, the National Capital Poison Center notes that poinsettias are not deadly. In fact, the NCPC notes that the rumor that poinsettias are deadly may have been around for more than a century, tracing its origins all the way back to a child who was found Thanks to its bright red and green dead lying next to a poinsettia colors, the poinsettia is perhaps the plant. The plant was blamed for the ideal holiday plant. But as much child’s death, and even though that as it suits holiday decor and seems blame was misplaced, the stigma tailor-made for that special time of stuck. WebMD notes that others year between Thanksgiving and the trace the false rumors surrounding first of January, the poinsettia has poinsettias to 1919, when parents Christmas trees, Santa Claus, menorahs, and glittering lighting displays are just a few of the many prominent symbols of the holiday season. necessary to prevent children and pets from swallowing it. Placing poinsettias beyond the reach of kids and pets is one simple way to accomplish just that.

The NCPC notes that, in most cases, exposure to any part of a poinsettia plant in children or pets has little, if any, effect. However, if the plant is swallowed, some people and pets may experience symptoms including nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. Some who touch the plant may develop a rash after contact.

Poinsettias are seemingly everywhere come the holiday season. And because they’re not fatal, celebrants can continue to display these beautiful plants that call to mind the colors of the holiday season.

While poinsettias are not deadly, the NCPC still advises those who plant to include the plant in their holiday decor to take every measure

This Holiday Season: Protect Your Family by Recycling Old Batteries (StatePoint) The holiday season can be just the motivation you need to finally declutter your junk drawers, closets, attic and basement in time for friends and family to visit. If these areas of your home contain used rechargeable batteries, you’re in good company. One in five consumers store some or all of their used batteries from the past year, according to a recent Nielsen study conducted on behalf of Call2Recycle. Whether it’s electronics packed away in the attic or boxed toys in the basement, old batteries are everywhere. As part of your de-cluttering efforts this holiday season, experts say it’s worthwhile to take the time to gather used batteries and properly recycle them. Recycling used batteries is not only good for the environment, but it also can play an important role in keeping families safe this

When hauling your holiday decorations out of storage, check to make sure that there aren’t any forgotten batteries hiding under cherished mementos. HOROSCOPES

SAGITTARIUS – Nov 23/Dec 21 Family affairs move to the forefront this week, Sagittarius. A spouse or a child is in need of assistance, and you must set aside the time to help amid your other responsibilities. CAPRICORN – Dec 22/Jan 20 Things have started to settle down a bit for you. Capricorn. That’s a welcome change from the harried pace you’ve been keeping of late. Enjoy the respite.

Flower Garden Annual Toys for Tots Collection Day scheduled for Saturday, December 8th Flower Garden Florist at 72 East Main Street in Webster is inviting their customers, friends and the entire community to join them again for their Annual Toys for Tots Campaign Collection Day. Past years’ events were such a success, that they would love for the community to come together again for this very important cause. Shop owner Lisa Grzyb is a Marine Corps Veteran herself. While serving with Headquarters Company, 25th Marines, Grzyb helped to coordinate the program for the Worcester County area. The Toys for Tots Campaign is one close at heart to her, and therefore the success of this event is very important to her. The support of the Marines last years was outstanding. Lisa contacted the local Toys for Tots Marine liaison and asked for support in hosting her “Pictures with Santa and the US Marines Day” at her flower shop. As in previous years they provided a detail of Marines in Dress Blues, and also staged a Humvee outside for the local children to explore and take photos in. The presence of Santa throughout the entire day at the event put smiles on kids and adults alike. Flower Garden owner and staff welcomes other businesses to join in

and make this day a success again! As in the past, a large donation has already come in to the flower shop from Hometown Bank in Webster. Their continued support of this collection event is so appreciated! The 2018 Pictures with Santa and Marine’s Day is this Saturday, December 8th, 10:00am-3:00pm, at Flower Garden Florist, 72 East Main Street, Webster. Please join them by bringing in a New, Unwrapped Toy for donation to the Toys for Tots Collection and have the opportunity to take great photos of your children with Santa and the Marines. It is awesome to share the reason for the need of this toy collection with children during the holiday season… it lets them know the true meaning of sharing and giving.

SMART BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT

GENERATIONS Herbal Apothecary & Gift Shop

East Main Plaza 129 East Main Street Webster, MA 508-987-3310 “The roots in our family grow strong and deep,” is the motto of the owner of Generations Herbal Apothecary and Gift Shop. If you have never had the pleasure of stopping in, make sure to head down as soon as possible. This phenomenal specialty shop is run by Del Bachand . This is a true family run business with its name being derived from the 4 generations that may be working at any time you stop in. Her childhood interest in all things natural is where the seeds that one day would become her store were planted. It has been 16 years since they have first opened their doors, though a few changes have taken place. On January 2nd, 2018 Del lost her retail location in Oxford due to a pipe bursting in her

building. This unthinkable tragedy has a silver lining though; it allowed her to move to her current location in the East Main Plaza. While a new location, it is still our familiar Del and her various tantalizing items. As an area resident and fierce advocate for local businesses, she understands the important relationship between residents and their neighborhood shops. This means she specializes in items made in America with emphasis on New England small companies. If you are looking for any Native American pieces Del offers items direct from the local tribes. The ever expanding inventory is always being replenished. The cozy atmosphere was recently enhanced

with new section for clothing. The curious and fascinating herbs, jewelry, and crystals are not the only draw of Generations. Del offers seminars and workshops for peace and harmony. Whether you are looking for a reiki recharge or a calming massage for stress relief head on down to Generations Apothecary and Gift shop for more information and a lively chat with Del! Generations is proud to honor all spiritual paths, from Buddhist singing bowls to Christian angel statues, there is something for

everyone. When you stop in make sure to ask Del about PinkHippy. org. A nonprofit organization dedicated to helping those directly and indirectly affected by cancer. Regular business hours are Monday 10-2, Tuesday – Friday 10-6, & Saturday 10-4, closed on Sundays. For more information on products and seminars call 508-987-3310, visit our website www.generationshealingcenter.com, or our Facebook page!

Warm hearts

keep kids from being cold. As beautiful as winter can be in New England, the bitter cold nights find many children going to sleep without the warmth that we often take for granted. Over the years, our annual pajama drive has helped provide many needy children with pajamas and slippers. Sadly, every winter a critical need remains. Our community support is so important. Through the warmth of our hearts, we can help stop children from going to sleep cold this winter.

Pajama Drive Nov. 24th through Dec. 15th Donations accepted at all bankHometown locations

• Please donate complete sets with a top, bottom or appropriate nightgown. • Children sizes 4T and up, as well as women’s sizes, small and medium, are of greatest need but all sizes are thankfully accepted.
