Mia

It’ Mia again. I am still here... been waiting for months for someone to notice me and want to adopt me. I like to follow you around and see what you are up too and I really do love treats. I would be a great friend for someone who is looking for a calmer, adult cat (approx. 6 years old) and not interested in a cat who will climb the curtains and perform acrobatics on the furniture. I love to have my cheeks rubbed and will give you little love nibbles. I am not fond of other cats or small children, but older kids are fine. Did I mention that I have the most beautiful green eyes (if I do say so myself!). Come and see me at the shelter in Webster, MA. You will find me in the lobby! We are open Thursday through Sunday from 12pm to 3:30pm.

Clean indoor air can help reduce asthma attacks Did you know that, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 25 million Americans, including roughly seven million children, have asthma? It’s true, and those numbers have steadily risen in recent years. Asthma is more than occasional wheezing or feeling out of breath during physical activity. Asthma is chronic and can lead to coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, fast breathing, and chest tightness, states the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America. In the 21st century, people spend significant time indoors at home, school or work, and indoor air environments could be triggers for asthma. Improving indoor air quality can help people breathe clearly. The AAFA notes that the following agents can adversely affect indoor air quality, potentially triggering asthma attacks.

September 5, 2018

Allergens Allergens such as mold, dust mites, pet dander and fur, and waste from insects or rodents thrive in many homes. Ensuring indoor air quality is high can cut back on the amount of allergens in the air. People with asthma can invest in an air purifier and vacuum regularly, being sure to use a HEPA-equipped appliance. Routinely replacing HVAC system filters can help prevent allergens from blowing around the house. Also, frequent maintenance of HVAC systems will ensure they are operating safely and not contributing to poor indoor air quality. Mold can be mitigated by reducing moisture in a home. Moist environments in the kitchen and bathroom may promote mold growth. Ventilation is key to keep mold at bay. Tobacco smoke Thirdhand smoke, or THS, may be unfamiliar to many people. A 2011 report published in Environmental Health Perspectives says THS is an

www.SmartShopperAd.com

invisible combination of gases and particles that can cling to clothing, cushions, carpeting, and other materials long after secondhand smoke has cleared from a room. Studies have indicated that residual nicotine levels can be found in house dust where people smoke or once smoked. Studies have indicated that smoke compounds can adsorb onto surfaces and then desorb back into air over time. Keeping tobacco smoke out of a home can improve indoor air quality and personal health. VOCs Volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, are gases released from commonly used products. These can include paints and varnishes, cleaning supplies, air fresheners, new furniture, and new carpet. People with asthma may find that VOCs can trigger attacks. Airing out items, reducing usage of products that are heavily scented and choosing low- or no-VOC products can help. Making cleaning products from baking soda, vinegar

and liquid oil soap also can keep indoor air quality high. Homeowners who plan to renovate their homes can consider using the appropriate specifications for HVAC systems to promote good indoor air, as well as address any other potential problems that may be compromising indoor air quality.

While the trend is to share photos and anecdotes via social media, these memories tend to be forgotten soon after they are posted. Once you choose a theme, it’s just a matter of putting together several coordinating items. Gift-giving is not always easy. Some people already seem to have it all, while others might not be forthcoming with regard to their interests or needs. Strategies parents can use to motivate students Students may need some time to adjust at the beginning of a new school year. Summer vacations typically lack the structure of the school year, and it might be unfair to expect kids to seamlessly slip back into their more regimented lives as students. While some early school year sluggishness might be normal, that should wear off pretty quickly. If not, and students appear to be struggling to get motivated for their schoolwork, parents can try various strategies that should help reignite youngsters’ passions for learning. • Make your home more schoolfriendly. Summer is a relaxing time of year when parents have a tendency to relax rules around the house. But come the school year, parents must make sure their homes are as conducive to studying as possible. Resist the urge to turn the television on each night so students are not distracted from their studies. Keep the home quiet so students are motivated to focus on their studies. • Encourage participation in extracurricular activities. Various studies have examined the relationship between extracurricular activities and academic performance. A 2002 study published in the journal Sociology of Education found that participation in extracurricular activities is associated with improved grade point average, increased college attendance and reduced absenteeism. The

link between participation in extracurricular activities and improved academic performance is still in need of study, but such participation may help children acclimate to the structure of the school year more quickly than they might if they do not participate in such activities. • Encourage curious youngsters. Kids are curious, and fostering that curiosity can be a great way for parents to get their kids excited about learning. Whether it’s during the school year and part of their curriculum or on summer break, encourage kids to engage in subjects that interest them. As kids learn more about the topics and subjects that interest them, they may develop a passion for learning that they can then take with them to the classroom. • Express an interest in the subjects children are studying. Another way to motivate students at the dawn of a new school year is to express an interest in the subjects they’re studying. Ask questions about their studies and encourage them to share their thoughts and opinions. Engaging students about the subjects they’re studying can motivate them to explore those subjects more deeply than they otherwise might. Motivating kids to be excited about their schoolwork at the dawn of a new school year can sometimes be difficult. But parents can employ various strategies that can help their children readjust to life in the classroom and motivate them to perform to the best of their abilities.

Back to School, Back to You: A Parent’s Survival Guide

• Boil a dozen eggs for an easy protein-rich snack. Create baggiesized portions of nuts and fruit. Prepping nourishing grab-and-go snacks for the afternoon crunch will help you stay on track. Walk on Your Lunch Break If you find yourself really strapped for workout time, try taking a 30-minute walk before eating your lunch. Even doing light cardiovascular exercise for a half hour can help you stay in shape and shed some pounds. Get the Kids Moving

If you weren’t able to squeeze in a sweat session sans kids, round up the family and take a long, after-dinner stroll. Encourage your children to keep up a moderate pace, while sharing stories and highlights from the day and playing games like “I Spy.” While it sounds counter-intuitive or even impossible to put yourself first when you’re a parent, prioritizing your health and fitness is essential to keeping up with parental demands. This back-to-school season, stay focused on the fact that you still need time for you.

Southbridge 100 Years Ago: Exploring the Franco-American Community presented by Dr. Elizabeth Blood SOUTHBRIDGE - Please join the Jacob Edwards Public Library on Thursday, September 27 from 6:30pm to 7:30pm for a special presentation. Between 1840 and 1930, approximately one million FrenchCanadians immigrated to the United States, the vast majority settling in New England. In Southbridge, Massachusetts a century ago, when state representative Félix Gatineau published his important chronicle of the town’s Franco-American community, French-speaking immigrants and their American-born children represented 60% of the town’s population! Gatineau’s History of Franco-Americans of Southbridge, Massachusetts, originally written in French in 1919, has just been translated into English by Dr. Elizabeth Blood of Salem State University and will be published through Via Appia Press (viaappiapress.com) in September. In this talk, Dr. Blood will offer a glimpse of what life was like for FrenchCanadians in Southbridge one hundred years ago, highlighting the role that the French-Canadian community played in establishing many of the town’s political, cultural, business, and religious institutions and offering insight into the fascinating character of Félix Gatineau, himself. Books will be available for purchase at the event.

The Dragonfly Spirit: A Mother’s Journey Book Signing WEBSTER - Saturday, September 29, from 1pm to 3pm – The Dragonfly Spirit: A Mother’s Journey book signing and talk with Susan Brunell at Booklovers’ Gourmet, 55 East Main Street, Webster, MA. After her twenty-year-old daughter dies in an automobile accident the author finds herself on a journey of grief that, until then, she could not even imagine. As she travels down this path, that has been determined for her, she learns about death and its effect on her life and the lives of others she loves. This is a story about learning to grow and cope despite great loss and also about opening the heart and mind to possibilities for healing and growth. Tools to understand the process and deal with the tragedy of loss are offered for the grieving and their loved ones. Free. Signed copies of the book will be available for purchase. America according to the United States Centers forDisease Control and Prevention's (CDC) 2010 NationalVital Statistics Report. In 2010,137,000 Americans died of stroke. The lack of regular physical activity results in 250,000 deaths annually, according to a 2003 report in the medical journal Circulation. The least physically fit persons have a mortality risk 4.5 times higher than physically fit persons.

(NewsUSA) - It's home run time. From spring training through the World Series in October, baseball fans are glued to their flat screens. Vascular surgeon David H. Stone, M.D., encourages arm chair enthusiasts to get into the game. "Find your favorite summertime sports pastime, and give your vascular system a great workout." As a member of the Society for Vascular Surgery, Dr. Stone encourages physical activity that can pump up blood while lowering blood pressure. "More than diet, exercise helps keep your weight down and provides positive health benefits," said Dr. Stone.

Lifestyle choices affect blood flow and blood pressure. The 2010 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention statistics indicate that one in every three Americans more than 20 years old has high blood pressure.

• Golfing, carrying clubs -- 391 • Rope jumping -- 1,074 • Swimming laps -- 528 • Tennis, singles -- 728

To remain "in the game," Dr. Stone recommends: • 30 minutes of exercise daily. After a one-hour workout, • a healthy diet the Mayo Clinic states that a • not smoking 200-pound person will have burned • maintaining a healthy body weight the following calories: This may reduce the risk of stroke, • Baseball -- 455 the fourth leading cause of death in • Bicycling, 10 mph -- 364

To detect vascular disease, noninvasive screening tests are available. To treat vascular disease, medications and preventive surgical procedures are available. For free print and electronic vascular health information, visit: VascularWeb.org.
