What they’re saying about us! 31 Thompson Road Webster, MA 01570 Tel: 508-943-5300
Good morning fellow feline fanatics. Everyone calls me Dove, and I couldn't have asked for a better name. Not only is my white fur feathery soft, but life on the streets hasn't tarnished my sweet soul either. I'm between 3-5 years old and they found me as a stray but you'd never know it. My three cottonball-cloud-kittens did a great job of keeping me grounded, but now it's my turn to shine! I might be a little shy when you first come to meet me, but I'll warm up to you once I know you're safe. Hint: it usually only takes a few seconds! Once you hear the soft, gentle rumbles in my throat, you're in. One of my goals in life is to become a carefree lap cat, which you may witness after a few minutes and I start to knead my bed like a love-thirsty kitten - oh, and I even have a few extra toes to do it with!
“I am so happy with my first ad with Smart Shopper resulting in so many grooming appointments! Tammy is the best! She cares about helping me build and grow my new business. I can’t wait to work on my next ad.” Nicole H. - Fairy Tails Pet Spa

How to create a wedding day schedule Wedding days can be hectic. In fact, many couples note after tying the knot that their wedding days were so busy that the ceremonies and receptions were over before they knew it. Creating a wedding day schedule can seem like a daunting task. Couples tend to have lots of things to do before saying “I do,” and organizing everything so ceremonies begin on time can seem as puzzling as a brain teaser. But certain scheduling strategies can help couples ensure they look their best and make it to the altar on time. • Start with the ceremony. Couples can establish a framework for their wedding day schedule by working back from the ceremony. Once the ceremony time is set, couples who plan to take photos before their ceremonies can then

Bridal parties may need transportation to the photo session, so determining when and where to take photos before the ceremony gives couples an idea of when to arrange for pickup.
• Confirm when the wedding venue is open to the wedding party. Before booking hair and makeup appointments, couples should confirm when they will be able to access their wedding venue. Brides may want to get their hair and makeup done at the ceremony sight, but that may only be possible if the venue opens early for the wedding party. If it does not, then brides must account for transportation time to the ceremony parties will require more time for sight when making their wedding hair and makeup than ceremonies day schedules. with small bridal parties. Wedding hair and makeup sessions can last several hours for large bridal parties, so brides should schedule their sessions early if their parties are big.

Grooms’ wedding day todo lists might not be as extensive as brides’, but grooms should still be kept in the loop regarding the schedule so they can help if anyone • Distribute your schedule to one has questions or if something goes costs, while others might charge extra. Confirm the availability and costs, and if it’s unavailable or too expensive, then arrange for lunch to be delivered. Either way, couples should not skip lunch, as it may be their only chance to eat until after the ceremony.

dog may really hope to include their furry friend in the festivities, but should not do so at the expense of the animal’s health. Outdoor wedding ceremonies under sunny skies may produce potentially unhealthy conditions for certain breeds or older dogs. Dogs that have difficulty getting around may need a red wagon (and attendant) to make the rounds at the wedding. Assistance Couples will be busy on their wedding days, so they may need to arrange for a caretaker to look after their dog during and after the ceremony. Asking a guest or guests
to play this role may be asking too much, as guests will no doubt want to celebrate without having to take care of a dog. A professional pet sitter might work, but that can be costly, as couples must pay for the sitter and will likely need to pay for the sitter to have a seat and a meal during the reception. Dogs can make great additions to weddings, but couples must consider a host of factors before deciding to have Fido join them as they tie the knot.

SMART BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT
Simply Elegant Yet Remarkably Affordable 444 Main St. • Southbridge, MA 774-318-8083 Since 2004, La Salle Reception Center has been a beautifully appointed reception venue located on the property of The Notre Dame Church, 444 Main Street in Southbridge. The Church was constructed in 1916, is a marvel of Romanesque design and was consecrated as a cathedral in 1950. Margaret Farrand, a resident of Southbridge, has attended Notre Dame Church all her life. In the 1980’s, and again in the year 2000, Margaret directed the renovation of the Notre Dame Rectory. From 2006-2010, Margaret served in the position of parish business manager where she led the renovation efforts at La Salle and other projects on the Notre Dame grounds. With
the merger of the four Catholic parishes in Southbridge, Margaret is now solely dedicated to the La Salle Reception Center as part of the newly formed Saint John Paul II Parish. Active in Southbridge and at Notre Dame Church for almost 50 years, Margaret has the knowledge of this community and its resources that will help in the planning of your special event. Lenny Patrillo is a lifelong resident of Sturbridge, and graduated from Tantasqua Regional High School. Lenny has always had a love for cooking and sharing a good meal with others. In 1983, he purchased Annie’s Country Kitchen, in Sturbridge. He has since expanded into the catering business with the

creation of Hearthstone Catering. Lenny works with many local organizations and is also actively involved in the renovations at La Salle Reception Center. La Salle has two rooms, the Grand Ballroom and the Tuscan Room. The Grand Ballroom can accommodate parties of between 125 and 300 people. The Grand Ballroom features chandeliers, an attractive granite bar, and a large and newly curtained stage which is perfect for a band or sweetheart table. The Tuscan Room can accommodate parties of between 50 and 125 people, and is designed to make you feel as if you were sitting on a porch overlooking a vineyard in Tuscany. This room features a stone fireplace, a “window” bar, and an indoor patio seating area. If you are looking for an elegant and affordable venue for your next event which is conveniently located halfway between Boston

Southbridge 100 Years Ago: Exploring the Franco-American Community presented by Dr. Elizabeth Blood SOUTHBRIDGE - Please join the Jacob Edwards Public Library on Thursday, September 27 from 6:30pm to 7:30pm for a special presentation. Between 1840 and 1930, approximately one million FrenchCanadians immigrated to the United States, the vast majority settling in New England. In Southbridge, Massachusetts a century ago, when state representative Félix Gatineau published his important chronicle of the town’s Franco-American community, French-speaking immigrants and their American-born children represented 60% of the town’s population! Gatineau’s History of Franco-Americans of Southbridge, Massachusetts, originally written in French in 1919, has just been translated into English by Dr. Elizabeth Blood of Salem State University and will be published through Via Appia Press (viaappiapress.com) in September. In this talk, Dr. Blood will offer a glimpse of what life was like for FrenchCanadians in Southbridge one hundred years ago, highlighting the role that the French-Canadian community played in establishing many of the town’s political, cultural, business, and religious institutions and offering insight into the fascinating character of Félix Gatineau, himself. Books will be available for purchase at the event.

3 Tips to Raise a DrugFree Child (StatePoint) By the time teens graduate from high school, about 45 percent will have tried marijuana, according the National Institute on Drug Abuse. And while marijuana is one of the most used substances among teenagers, it is not the only one of concern today. The drug epidemic is an expansive and very real public health crisis and families are on the front line when it comes to getting prevention and recovery efforts underway. Here are three steps parents can take to help keep their kids safe. 1. Communicate. The best line of defense is an open relationship with your children that encourages a healthy dialogue about the dangers of drug use in terms they can understand. Paired with consequences that will resonate, like the taking away of freedoms and valued items, discussions should include talking openly about the effects of drugs like marijuana, heroin, cocaine and methamphetamine on a user’s health and wellness. Be available and willing to listen to whatever your children have to say without interrupting or losing your composure, ensuring a healthy conversation where they feel their voices are being heard. 2. Have a Plan and Offer Privileges and Incentives. In the home, prescription drugs such as opioids and stimulants should be locked away safely, accessible only to the person to whom they’re prescribed. If those drugs are prescribed to your child, monitor use of the medication, and keep it
stored in your bathroom rather than your child’s. Parents who suspect their child may be facing peer pressure or abusing drugs should consider using a home drug test. Sold at major retailers in the pharmacy section, First Check Home Drug Tests are a quick and accessible resource for parents concerned about their children’s health. Over 99 percent accurate, these kits deliver results in five minutes, testing for the presence of up to 14 commonly abused drugs. Your drug prevention plan may also include a system of rewards for passing home drug tests, including car privileges and other tangible incentives. 3. Strategize Saying “No.” Strategize with your children on how to say “no” when pressured to use drugs, while also reinforcing the “why.” Reasons to say “no” can be anything from not wanting to harm one’s grades, health or athletic potential, or even just the fact that you implement home drug testing. To that end, consider home drug testing as a way to take the pressure off your children, giving them an easy out in social situations where drugs are introduced, while saving face with peers. You can even give them a line to use on their friends, such as, “I can’t, my parents are crazy and they drug test me!” More tips to help raise drug-free kids can be found at notmykid.org. Drug use is a challenging issue to navigate, but with a few preventative actions and an open discourse, you can foster a healthy, drug-free environment for your family.
