Tuajuanda C. Jordan, PhD Dr. Tuajuanda Jordan has served as St. Mary’s College of Maryland’s (SMCM) seventh president since July 2014. The College, as Maryland's only public honors college and the first of its kind in the nation, has been widely recognized for its successes. Consistently ranked among the top 100 Kiplinger's list of best values in public colleges and among the top 10 best public liberal arts colleges in the nation by U.S. News & World Report, SMCM continues to build upon its solid reputation for academic excellence under Dr. Jordan’s watch. Under her leadership, the College continues to analyze and assess its programming to ensure that students are provided opportunities to be engaged, productive global citizens and leaders. President Jordan has been widely recognized for her contributions to higher education and the larger community. She was named a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (2018) and one of the Top 25 Women in Higher Education by Diverse Issues in Higher Education magazine (2017). She was recognized as a Black Leader in Education by the AFRO (2017), was named as one of Fisk University’s Talented Tenth (2016), Purdue University’s Distinguished Women Scholars (2015-16), and as an Influential Marylander by the Daily Record (2015). Dr. Jordan received the inaugural CEO's Excellence Award from the Prince George's County Public Schools Foundation (2019), an Education Excellence Award (2018) from the Southern Maryland Minority Chamber of Commerce, the Torchbearer Award (2014) from the National Coalition of Black Women, Baltimore Metropolitan Chapter, and was inducted into the Zeta Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa (2015), the nation’s oldest academic honor society. Dr. Jordan gained national prominence in the realm of science education with the creation of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Science Education Alliance (SEA) program and the launch of its first initiative, the SEA Phage program, which engaged novice undergraduates in research in genomics and bioinformatics. This program has been implemented in more than 50 diverse institutions across the nation, impacted thousands of students and faculty, and resulted in numerous scientific and pedagogical publications. Prior to SMCM, Dr. Jordan was a tenured faculty member and administrator at Xavier University of Louisiana and Lewis and Clark College in Oregon. She holds a B.S. in chemistry from Fisk University and a PhD in biochemistry from Purdue University.

Faculty Distinction In the academic world, it is not only students who receive special notices for outstanding work; faculty do, too. Faculty are recognized with promotions, awards, and endowed chairs/ professorships. Such special professorships are supported by an endowment – that is, by gifts made by individuals to the St. Mary’s College of Maryland Foundation. The interest from these specially designated gifts makes it possible for the holder of the chair or professorship to enjoy extra financial support for further research and professional growth. Each spring, the College recognizes student and faculty scholarship at an Awards Convocation. The faculty recognized at the 2021 convocation are noted here. The Homer L. Dodge Award for Excellence in Teaching by a Junior Faculty Member was established in 2003 by the late Norton T. Dodge, faculty emeritus, to recognize faculty accomplishments. The 2021 recipient of the Homer L. Dodge Award for Excellence in Teaching by a Junior Faculty Member is Amy Steiger, assistant professor of theater. The Norton T. Dodge Award for Scholarly and Creative Achievement was created in 1989 by the late Norton T. Dodge, faculty emeritus, to recognize faculty accomplishments. The 2021 recipient of the Norton T. Dodge Award for Scholarly and Creative Achievement is Elizabeth Nutt Williams, professor of psychology. The Jordan Teaching Exemplar Award was established In 2017 by President Tuajuanda C. Jordan to recognize members of the St. Mary’s College community who exhibit exemplary teaching within or beyond the traditional classroom. The 2021 recipient of the Jordan Teaching Exemplar Award is Sahar Shafqat, professor of political science. In 2011, Don Stabile established an award to recognize faculty members who are active

participants in the student life of the College. This award was named to honor his colleague, the late Andy Kozak, professor of economics. The 2021 recipient of the Andy Kozak Faculty Contribution to Student Life Award is Antonio Ugues Jr., associate professor of political science and director of the Center for the Study of Democracy. In 2021, President Jordan created two-year named professorships for junior faculty who have been employed by the College for three to 10 years and who are exemplary teacherscholars within their academic program areas. These honorees exceed standards in teaching and or scholarly/creativity and at minimum meet standards for the other. These individuals are also good citizens of the campus community. There can be no more than two such awards in any department. When there are two, the more senior faculty member is named the Pandion haliaetus professor and the other honoree is the Haliaeetus leucocephalus professor - because seahawks (ospreys) trump eagles. The junior faculty professorships for 2021 are as follows: Emily Brownlee (biology) Andrew Cognard-Black (sociology) Torry Dennis (neuroscience) Jeff Eden (history) Gili Freedman (psychology) Jerry Gabriel (English) Liza Gijanto (anthropology) Argelia González-Hurtado (ILC-Spanish) Cassie Gurbisz (environmental studies) SooBin Jang (educational studies) Ellen Kohl (environmental studies) Kelly Neiles (chemistry) George MacLeod (ILC-French) Michelle Milne (physics) Amy Steiger (theater) Troy Townsend ’07 (chemistry) Antonio Ugues Jr. (political science)

Retiring Faculty Anne Leblans joined the SMCM faculty in 1987 and has single-handedly sustained the closeknit German program over this time. She has supported the First Year Seminar program from its inception and has been a tireless supporter of students, urging them to always do their best work. As one example, in 2016, she and her German students created an exhibition regarding Syrian refugees in Europe and Germany. Katharina von Kellenbach joined the SMCM faculty in 1991 to build the religious studies program. She was also instrumental in founding the WGSX program and is a founding member of the Chesapeake Public Charter School. In 2019-2020, she served as Corcoran Visiting Chair in Christian-Jewish-Relations at Boston College, and in May of 2021, she begins a new job at

the Evangelische Akademie in Berlin to design teaching materials to combat antisemitism and racism in religious education. Iris Carter Ford joined the SMCM anthropology department in 1993. Her research interests include popular culture and consumption. Ford has conducted research on food consumption among poor women in both West and East Africa, on media consumption among homeless women in the District of Columbia, and more recently 18th-century English materiality and consumption at Oxford’s Bodleian Library. In 2015, she was the recipient of a National Endowment for the Humanities grant to explore materialism in human life.

The Founding of St. Mary’s College In 1840 it was decided that Maryland should have a monument to Lord Baltimore’s 1634 colony known as St. Mary’s City. Lord Baltimore’s experiment in freedom of conscience and in the separation of church and state was admirable, so Maryland’s “living monument” would be a girls’ high school (or seminary, as high schools were often called in those days) that would exemplify his beliefs. The state-supported school would be named after Maryland’s first capital, St. Mary’s City, and would have an independent board of trustees. It would be non-denominational, with both trustees and faculty evenly divided among Methodists, Catholics, and Episcopalians—the three major denominations in St. Mary’s County at the time. The first certificate of graduation was granted to Sallie Brome Morsell in 1874. St. Mary’s Female Seminary taught the liberal arts and evolved into a junior college in 1926. By the end of the 1960s it had become St. Mary’s College of Maryland, a coeducational four-year college. It attracted bright students who were looking for the almost impossible—a college that was public, affordable, devoted to the liberal arts, academically rigorous, respectful of all races and creeds, and overseen by an independent board of trustees and a well-credentialed faculty committed to scholarship and teaching. In 1992, St. Mary’s College was recognized by the governor and the Maryland legislature as an honors college.

Commencement Speaker Brandon M. Scott

Doctor of Humane Letters, Honoris Causa Brandon M. Scott ’06 is the 52nd mayor of Baltimore, Maryland. He was unanimously elected president of the Baltimore City Council by his colleagues in May 2019. As Council President, Scott developed and released the first-ever City Council President legislative agenda, focused on building safer, stronger communities, cleaning up city government, investing in Baltimore’s young people, and centering equity. Previously, Scott served on the City Council representing Baltimore’s 2nd District. He was first elected in 2011 at the age of 27 and is one of the youngest people ever elected to the Baltimore City Council. During his first term, Scott emerged as a leading voice in reducing violence in Baltimore and reinstated Council oversight of the Baltimore Police Department by holding quarterly hearings. He believes that reducing violence will require a holistic, all-hands-on-deck approach, one that recognizes violence is fundamentally a public health issue. Scott led legislative initiatives that created extensive crime data sharing and online reporting of crimes by the Baltimore Police Department. In 2016, Scott introduced and passed legislation creating an open data policy in Baltimore. Scott is a lifelong resident of Baltimore City. He is a graduate of MERVO High School and St. Mary’s College of Maryland. He lives in Baltimore’s Frankford neighborhood in Northeast Baltimore.

Honorary Degree Recipient Mervin Savoy

Doctor of Humane Letters, Honoris Causa A Piscataway Indian and former Tribal Chair of the Piscataway Conoy Tribe of Maryland, Mervin Savoy was born in Charles County, Maryland, in 1943. Savoy lived a life that would have been familiar to most southern Maryland farming families, but her life – and the lives of other Piscataway descendants – was also infused by Piscataway traditions. During this time, Piscataway families were conscious of their Native heritage but hesitated to discuss it outside of their community for fear of ridicule or other repercussions. The rise of both the Civil Rights Movement and the American Indian Movement began to change Piscataway attitudes about their role in Maryland history and community. Piscataway families began to publicly celebrate their history, traditions, and identity. They also began the process for seeking state and Federal recognition. Through this time, Mervin Savoy served as chair of the Piscataway Conoy Tribe of Maryland, providing leadership for her tribe, conducting and supervising the required research for recognition, meeting with elected and appointed officials to argue her case, developing school and other educational programs, and raising awareness in Maryland and internationally about the living Piscataway. It took nearly 20 years for the State of Maryland to officially recognize the Piscataway Conoy Tribe along with the Piscataway Indian Nation. Through it all, Savoy managed the tribe and the process, betraying an unwavering commitment to her community and her state until she stepped down as Tribal Chair following the recognition of the Piscataway Conoy Tribe and the Piscataway Indian Nation in an executive order issued by Gov. Martin O'Malley on January 12, 2012.

Academic Distinction Graduating with Honors Seniors with a high grade-point average (GPA) are candidates for a degree with honors. These honors have, for centuries, been expressed in the Latin phrase “cum laude” (with praise). All candidates for a degree with honors are also St. Mary’s scholars. Below, the GPAs are ranked from highest to lowest: Summa cum laude: 3.900 - 4.000 GPA Magna cum laude: 3.700 - 3.899 GPA Cum laude: 3.500 - 3.699 GPA

Valedictorian The senior who has the highest GPA (grade-point average) is the class valedictorian. For the Class of 2021, the valedictorian is Danielle Szynborski. Originally from Lusby, Maryland, Danielle Szynborski began her career at St. Mary's College in the fall of 2017 and is finishing it as valedictorian. A double major in art and English, Danielle has created art lessons for children, served as a Writing and Speaking Center tutor, a teaching assistant, a gallery attendant, and an editorial assistant for the College archives. Given these experiences, it is no surprise that she intends to continue her education after graduation. This fall, Danielle will pursue a master’s degree in speech pathology from SUNY Buffalo.

Academic Honor Societies The College has 12 academic departments that have instituted campus chapters of discipline-specific national honor societies. Students admitted to these academic honor societies wear cords or medallions over their black gowns.
