THE PUBLIC HONORS COLLEGE

PUBLIC. HONORS. COLLEGE. Rigorous, relevant, and experiential education should be open to ev eryone with the talent, ambition, and potential to do the work.

Welcome to the Public Honors College. THE PUBLIC HONORS COLLEGE

In today’s competitive world, it’s more important than ever to choose a college that will make employers notice you first. That will challenge you to find your voice and reach further than you ever thought possible. St. Mary’s College of Maryland is the nation’s first public honors college and one of only two in the United States to have earned that designation: we clearly have expectations—for ourselves, and for you. When you choose our honors-level education, you’re

asking for something special: elevated academics, a pathway to a prosperous career, prestige without the pretentiousness, and professors who genuinely care about your success. In return, all we ask is that you put in the work, be relentlessly motivated, and of course, get wet. Have fun. Make lifelong friends. The best part about our honors education is that you get to experience it with some of the kindest people you’ll ever meet on one of the nation’s most beautiful campuses.

AN HONORS EDUCATION. You don’t have to study the galaxy in our new minor, astrophysics, to believe that everything is connected in the world. At least it’s what we believe in our own universe of St. Mary’s College. It’s why economics majors benefit from studying sociology and why music can relate to mathematics. We believe an interconnectivity of curriculum delivers the most well-rounded education. Which, in turn, creates the most well-rounded educated person. A person who isn’t a bystander, a person who is a force in the world. A true global citizen. Prepare to roll up your sleeves, because if you think you’ll sit bored behind a desk all

ΦBK Phi Beta Kappa institution

day, think again. Our approach to education is hands-on, in and out of the classroom. The same political science discussion in the classroom can continue with your professor in the dining hall, which can turn into your capstone project, or as we call it St. Mary’s Project, presented at a national conference. After all, you’ll be taught by the best of the best in their field, not by teaching assistants.

You’ll also learn real-world skills that employers demand for easy entry into the career of your choosing. That’s why our graduates go on to work at places like the Discovery Channel, Amazon, and J.P. Morgan.

MAJORS

Tailored for excellence. Let’s find what speaks to you. As you might expect of an honors college, close personal attention is the norm here. But as a public institution what you might not expect is our small, powerful size and one of the lowest student-to-faculty ratios in the nation. What does that mean for you? Our world-class professors are your advisers, advocates, confidants, and friends. They care about your interests, believe

in your potential, and go above and beyond to help you succeed. And that includes assisting you in navigating our 78 academic programs to find an area of study just for you. From the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and mathematics, to cross-disciplinary studies and pre-professional programs, there’s a lot to choose from.

BE HERE. BE PROUD. BE YOUR BEST. It's an image that will take your breath away, rounding the bend and seeing the campus for the first time. Our stunning waterfront location isn’t just aesthetically pleasing; the river actually extends our learning community. Join the environmental studies students seed the oyster beds or connect with biology majors as they study the growth of moss on the shore. Across our campus you’ll find green rooftops, outside classrooms, a campus farm, solar panels, and more. In fact, our sustainability practices have earned us a Top 6 Green Colleges

designation from the Princeton Review, 2018, and honored us with Tree Campus USA® recognition by the Arbor Day Foundation.

You’ll catch students using our kayaks, standup paddleboards and sailboats on the beach. You might even find the student next to you in class still dripping from being out in the water. Meet us at the river, and soak in the energy of this place and let it inspire your spirit and daily life.

Welcome to St. Mary’s College By choosing to join this community, I accept the responsibility of helping to build on its past heritage, of living its ideals, and contributing to its future.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

Make a difference. Lots of St. Mary’s College students do. They tutor all ages, build houses, feed the hungry and work for social justice. At a rate of 9K hours per year! We are so proud of our students and to be on the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll (2016).

CLUBS

Find what you love. Put your passion into dance club, Intervasity Chrisitian Fellowship, College Democrats or Republicans, Habitat for Humanity, St. Mary’s Triangle and Rainbow Society, Jewish Student Union, organic farming, windsurfing, Black Student Union, climbing, Maryland Student Legislature, Latinos Unidos, Relay for Life, or many other options.

GREEN CULTURE

We’re proud to be green. We grow our own organic produce and eat it in the dining hall. If we’re eating on the go, we take it in a green box. When we’re done, we compost and recycle the rest. We also build tiny houses, and our buildings are LEED certified: even the roofs are green.

“Take your passions, your skills, and the knowledge you have gained at this place to create a more just and humane society for all.”

– President Tuajuanda C. Jordan

Morgan, sports medicine assistants at Salisbury University, and contract specialists at Booz Allen Hamilton. More than 60% of St. Mary’s College graduates pursue advanced degrees within five years of graduation, like Brian Tennyson ’11, who is finishing a doctorate

in physics at Yale Univeristy. Nicole DeAngell ’14 and Erin Knutson ’15 earned National Science Foundation fellowships: Nicole is a doctoral student in neuroscience at Dartmouth University and Erin is a doctoral student in physics at Tulane University.

Major: Political Science Current Position: Works in Switzerland for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, running a global public health advocacy program. Specific initiatives he has shaped are for road safety and tobacco-free kids. St. Mary's challenged and expanded my narrow worldview and sparked a desire to better understand the contours of the world order. This spark inspired my career path as an international development and humanitarian worker and, in all honesty, changed my life. The public honors college experience fostered intellectual debate about international affairs and politics within a community of individuals who were all, in one way or another, looking to leave the world a little bit better.”

Nina Mercedes Rabin ’13

Major: Political Science Current Position: Attorney, Lennon Murphy & Phillips, LLC, Westport, Connecticut “I love that political science internships allow students to see why and how the political system actually works. Sometimes it’s frustrating to watch but it’s amazing when it all comes together to cause change.”

Stephon Dingle ’12

Major: History Minor: African & African Diaspora Studies Current Position: TV Anchor/Reporter for CBS WLKY News Louisville, Kentucky Graduate School of Journalism, Columbia University ’13 “Little did I know SMCM would be the place I embraced wholeheartedly and that would in turn embrace me back, making it a place to truly always call home.”
