Santa Monica based Westside Rentals has been sold to the CoStar Group, operator of Apartments.com. The sale was announced this week and the new owners said the local company will keep its Santa Monica headquarters. The company will decrease focus on its brokerage sales and leasing services to maximize its inventory of available rental properties.

Local entrepreneur Mark Verge started Westside Rentals 20 years alongside his wife Lani and his brother. He said the company had been approached by potential buyers before, but the CoStar offer was exceptional. “We are thrilled to join the CoStar team and the Apartments.com network of sites,” he said. “Becoming part of an incredibly innovative company that has truly transformed the rental experience for consumers and landlords alike is exciting and we’re eager to contribute to their success.” He said the sale was more attractive due the buyer’s commitment to the current employees

“The key is the employees are all taken care of,” he said. Westside Rentals offers a subscription service for finding rental housing. The company reported more than 85,000 members in 2016 and had more than 350,000 landlords listing properties. The local listings will be added to the Apartments.com network. “The Los Angeles market represents the largest rental market in the U.S. Bringing Westside Rentals into our family of rental brands and expanding the rental choices for consumers there is a natural extension for us,” said Andrew Florance, Founder and CEO of CoStar Group. “Westside Rentals

has built a loyal base of renters in this highly competitive market as well as a dedicated group of landlords across a variety of different types of rental properties.” Verge also owns a chain of local restaurants and said he plans to reinvest in the eateries and use the businesses to build a stronger sense of community in Santa Monica. “It’s a fun business, I enjoy it,” he said. “I really enjoy the interaction with the community, with the employees.” Of his four restaurants (OP Café, Margo’s, Art’s Table and Ashland Hill) Verge said the spirit SEE APARTMENT PAGE 3

The iconic Santa Monica High School SS Viking is a symbol showing students that summer is here and graduation is near, but 2017 will be the final voyage for the popular Grad Nite tradition. Over 600 students will be attending this year’s Samohi Grad Nite 2017 on June 8. The rite of passage for graduates consists of food, various activities throughout the night and jumping on the SS Viking to an exotic destination, this year being Jamaica. Every year a group of men work together to construct the 28 feet tall and 34-foot long blue and gold ship. Fathers Chuck Kearsley, Chris Emhardt, and Woody Coleman direct much of the boat construction. They have dedicated nearly 20 years of work to provide an unforgettable experience for the graduating seniors. Year after year the boat and the men never disappoint, but as the boat continues to age, so does the crew and they feel it is time to throw in the towel. It is no secret the boat build is no easy task as it takes three weeks before graduation to setup and one weekend to tear down. The construction of the ship needs roughly

BIGGEST MYSTERY

File Photo

When Santa Monica’s oldest tobacconist, Edward Kolpin Sr., died in April 2007, he had a wish. That his little shop on Wilshire Boulevard would continue to sell handcrafted pipes, high-end cigars and custom blended tobacco for ten more years. When Kolpin’s daughter-in-law turns out the lights and locks the door one last time Monday, the nearly 90-year-old store will have fulfilled that promise. “It will be hard,” Jeanette Kolpin said as she held back tears and pulled out some pamphlets from the Museum of Neon Art. “But we will be immortalized.”

This mystery photo was retired after two months of incorrect guesses. It’s location remains a mystery. SEE VIKING PAGE 3
