‘TIS THE SEASON 2018
F
or those who’d prefer their holiday rush to be more of a holiday stroll, Montana Avenue is offering the perfect opportunity to shop and relax in one of Los Angeles’ most pleasant neighborhoods. This year, 150 shops, restaurants, and establishments in Santa Monica’s premier retail destination will swing open their doors and celebrate the season with two days of discounts, specials, and promotions. Small Business Saturday will be Nov. 24 from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. and the Holiday Walk will fill the night with live music, tasty treats, and festivities on Saturday, Dec. 8 from 4 - 8 p.m.. Held the Saturday after Thanksgiving, Small Business Saturday has grown to a national event thanks to a promotion campaign by American Express. Businesses hope to motivate shoppers to keep their dollars within their communities and support local merchants. Shopping locally, whether it’s on a dedicated day or just as a matter of habit, helps everyone, shopper and shopkeeper. As much as 70 cents of each dollar spent locally stays in the community. Keeping that money in the local economy supports local schools, residents, youth sports and charities. This year, Montana’s popular Holiday Walk will also take place on a Saturday providing more time for locals to enjoy the spirit of the season. On Saturday, December 8, from 4 – 8 p.m. visitors can enjoy the charms of browsing in a small
village of sophisticated retailers. Organized by Montana Avenue Merchants Association in partnership with Buy Local, the day features live music, food, drinks and great deals on Montana Avenue between 7th & 17th Street. Store owners will be striking up the band, wrapping presents and hosting the big man himself - Santa Claus - to make this year’s walk the most fun and festive yet. Montana’s eleven blocks of open-air shopping allows customers to browse the pleasant tree-lined street at their leisure, providing shoppers the chance to find everything they need for the upcoming festivities. Stores up and down the street will have sidewalk displays to help shoppers hunt for their perfect holiday gifts and still enjoy the fun on the sidewalk. Neighbors meet and mingle with store owners and often bring their friends to enjoy the celebratory atmosphere. There will be Santa photos for kids (and kids at heart) and the ever popular carolers will be on several corners. With three decades of history, the holiday walk has evolved from a simple sidewalk sale to a multi-generational and much anticipated centerpiece of Santa Monica’s holidays. Santa Monicans that first wandered the street with their parents are now bringing their kids to the event and generating entirely new memories that will be passed down to yet another group of eager shoppers.

T
his January, Santa Monica Restaurant Week returns to Los Angeles, California’s beachside city for a week-long culinary celebration of Santa Monica’s award-wining dining scene. Back for its seventh year, Santa Monica Travel & Tourism’s signature innovative program will feature Santa Monica’s top restaurants, a new custom ingredient and a social media contest giveaway. From January 7-13, 2019, Santa Monica Restaurant Week will bring beloved local restaurants together to offer diners a chance to begin 2019 on a healthy note while enjoying the city’s vibrant food scene. Participating Santa Monica restaurants will offer specially-crafted dishes (and even beverages), all created to highlight the generous health benefits of this year’s featured ingredient – the persimmon. The orange-colored fall fruit is known for its honey-like flavor, and rejuvenates both sweet and savory dishes alike. The fruit pairs perfectly with seasonal dishes such as a persimmon and brie crostini to a citrus, beet and persimmon salad to spiced persimmon turmeric tea. Not only are persimmons tasty, they are full of vitamins A, B and C, minerals, and fiber that promote heart health,
reduce inflammation, support healthy vision and keep your digestive system healthy. Santa Monica Restaurant Week creations will be prepared to harness the ample health benefits of the persimmon, with a spotlight on creating fresh and flavorful dishes for an audience that demands nothing but California cuisine at its finest. Santa Monica Restaurant Week is a time when many of the city’s renowned chefs put their creativity to the test, whipping up bold and innovative dishes that are certain to delight. As the reputed birthplace of California fusion cuisine, this year’s dishes will showcase Santa Monica’s artistic blending of culinary styles made with fresh, local and organic ingredients. Take advantage of Santa Monica Restaurant Week this upcoming January by indulging in healthy, persimmon-inspired culinary creations cultivated from Santa Monica Farmers Markets at restaurants throughout the city. Enter the chance to win $500 by sharing Santa Monica Restaurant Week photos on social media using the hashtag #SMRestaurantWeek. Extra Bedroom Program Returns
Annual hotel program offers Santa Monica residents deeply discounted hotel rates through January
F
or many, the holiday season is an important time of year to spend with loved ones. Those of us who live in a place filled with as much natural beauty and cultural vibrancy as Santa Monica may find that we are the designated host and tour guide for visiting friends and family during this time. After all, as winter descends, who can blame our visitors for wanting to celebrate the season near the ocean in our sunny beachside city? No matter how welcomed our cherished guests may be, Santa Monica Travel & Tourism (SMTT) recognizes space can become an issue. Santa Monica residents in need of an extra bedroom for visiting friends and family during the holidays are in luck –SMTT is bringing back its annual Extra Bedroom Program just in time for the holiday season. Each year with Extra Bedroom Program, Santa Monica’s hotel community comes together to serve their neighbors by offering Santa Monica residents access to hotel rates
far below those available to visitors throughout the year. From November 12, 2018 through January 18, 2019, Santa Monica residents are offered discounted hotel rates and perks, and during this time, SMTT invites Santa Monica locals to host their visitors without sacrificing their personal space or holiday budget at 16 properties across our celebrated hotel collection. “We are pleased to welcome the return of Extra Bedroom Program,” said Misti Kerns, SMTT president/CEO. “During this special season Santa Monica residents can keep their visitors and loved ones near-by with generous offers from our accommodation partners all while enjoying a taste of our destination’s world-class hotel collection.” Residents can secure these discounted hotel rates simply by mentioning the program while making the reservation over the phone, then showing proof of Santa Monica residency (California ID or drivers’ license) SEE HOTELS PAGE 16

anta Monica is many things to many people: a family getaway, a day of retail therapy, a night out with friends and a fine dining destination. Pico is all of that and more. Residents of the city by the sea, as well as thousands of eager visitors, can find restaurants, bakeries, coffee shops, bars, ice cream shops, art galleries, live theater, gyms, spas, boutique retail and everyday staples. The business district spans all of Pico Blvd within Santa Monica, from The 10 Freeway to the ocean. The neighborhood’s proud history as the city’s most diverse area is reflected in the unique mix of uses that call Pico Blvd their home. Perhaps the most stylish addition to the street is Seth Schafer, a second generation tailor who recently brought his skills to the West Coast from Baltimore, catering to the polished business people of Southern California. The Brixton, a stylish gastropub offering incredible food and insane happy hour specials, is the perfect place to show off such a suit. Across the street, The Daily Pint SEE EXPLORE PAGE 17

ico is a gateway to the ocean for many Angelenos. Those passing through the area will experience an artful welcome to the vibrant neighborhood. With nearly 30 murals populating previously bland walls and an upcoming banner program to adorn light poles in the street, Pico is poised to become an arts destination in its own right. Santa Monica’s Beautify Earth (BE) is a nonprofit organization on a mission to paint the world in color. The group levies massive community participation to create stunning works that increase foot traffic using a “stopand-look” effect that draws visitors to the surrounding stores. While there are pockets of
murals created by Beautify Earth near 10th St, 17th St and the Virginia Avenue Park, most are distributed along the entire Boulevard, creating a one-street art walk. The art of the murals will soon be complimented by new banners running the entire length of Pico Blvd. More than 50 banners will be placed, brightening the neighborhood with different designs that highlight the diversity of attractions along Pico. “If you’re driving from West L.A. to Santa Monica, you’ll come through the underpass and all of a sudden there will be beautiful, colorful banners promoting music, theater, dining and recreation,” said Sharon Town

Tips for a Sustainable Holiday from the City of Santa Monica’s Office of Sustainability & the Environment
n Give the gift of an experience over something physical like concert or theatre tickets. n DIY Gift wrapping with fun construction paper, your free local newspaper or favorite magazines. n Avoid tinsel and plastic decorations.
n Skip wrapping altogether and tie a bow with ribbon or twine. n Always use LED lights and make sure to turn them off when not in use! n Look for heirloom or vintage gifts and think quality over quantity, purchasing gifts that are long lasting.
n Make something edible or pick up something from the Santa Monica Farmers Market. Include a recipe for a personal touch. n Support local and sustainable businesses. Visit www.smgbc.org/directory and www.buylocalsantamonica.com for a list of businesses.
