Protoje shares movement inducing engaging sounds at the pier
PROTOJE & THE INDIGGNATION
W
earing dark pants, an olive shortsleeved collared shirt and a black cap that doesn’t come close to concealing his long dreadlocks, Protoje jukes and gestures as he walks backwards across Ocean Avenue at Colorado Avenue, the iconic Santa Monica Pier arch looming in the background. It’s merely a quick visual clip midway through the reggae musician’s video for “Can’t Feel No Way,” parts of which were filmed on the world-famous pier and its nearby beaches. But it’s a fitting prelude to Thursday evening’s show as part of the Twilight Concert Series, which brings Protoje back to the Santa Monica landmark to share the engaging sounds he’s taken around the globe. “We had a lot of fun doing it, and the people were very cooperative,” he says of the music video, which has already commanded tens of thousands of views on YouTube since its release earlier this
month. “The series seems like a great platform to showcase my music to people who would have probably not been exposed to it if not for a series such as this.” Reggae has evolved since the days of Bob Marley, retaining its roots while incorporating other musical styles and influences into songs about love, faith, family and more. Protoje, the stage name for Jamaica native Oje Ken Ollivierre, is a perfect example: He collaborated with KyMani Marley (a son of the reggae legend) on “Rasta Love,” and his band, the Indiggnation, pulls together elements of rock, hip-hop, dubstep and dancehall. It’s wild, it’s free, and it’s movementinducing. “I’m very high-energy from start to finish to make sure I keep the vibe going,” Protoje says. “You can just expect to just come out there dancing and have a smile put on [your] face.”
2016 TWILIGHT CONCERT SERIES WEEK 4
JULY 28TH - REGGAE
As far as Protoje is concerned, reggae music is in a good place, especially from a creative standpoint. He says the current generation of artists has come up with unique sounds and approaches to keep the genre fresh, although it’s often a challenge to spread the music into new listening circles. “I just feel like our budgets are not up to scratch in this big industry or this genre,” he says, “so that’s what we would have to work on to spread it further.” It’ll help Protoje to have an audience of thousands at the Santa Monica Pier, where he’ll have a chance to introduce new listeners to his groovy rhythms and skillful sing-speak. His versatility becomes evident across his discography, which recently added five free-to-download songs from Side B of the “Royalty Free” album. Protoje honed his sound while also diversifying his talents on “The Seven Year Itch” and “The 8 Year
Affair,” his first two studio releases. “Criminal,” a highlight of last year’s “Ancient Future” album, stands out with its politically provocative lyrics. Yet the musician nails the playful, back-and-forth banter of “Really Like You,” a decidedly sunnier collaboration with Sara Lugo. Protoje says his approach to live performances is the same whether concertgoers know his material or not. “No matter what happens in the crowd, it’s me doing my art for an hour and a half and I get a chance to go out there and perfect my craft and try to get closer to mastery as possible,” he says. “So this just poses a different challenge, but for me I’m very relaxed in these situations and it doesn’t matter if ten people know my music or a thousand. I’m just gonna go out there and do what it is I do.” And what he does, like the “Can’t Feel No Way” video, is certainly suitable for a summer evening on the beach.

Pier Seafood, Yunnie Kim Morena has taken the helm from her mother, Hae Ju Kim, continuing the legacy of this familyowned and operated Pier mainstay. With yet another generation of Santa Monican's coming up through the business, the Albright said they see their partnership with TCS as an extension of their family history and lifestyle on the pier. Inside the TCS venue, food options extend to the popular food vendors and beer garden. Boulevard Brewing Company is hosting this year's beer garden and adults who like a little liquid merriment can do so in full view of the TCS stage. The area also provides exceptional views of the Santa Monica coast and in perhaps a clever bit of cross marketing, is downwind from some of the great food booths. If you want a lighter snack, perhaps something to eat while you stroll past the Snapchat games, the Pier deck hosts some traditional snack choices including kettle corn, churros and the massively popular roasted corn booth. Cooks go through more than 400 ears of corn per night at the roasting station and 50 pounds (pre-popped weight) on the kettle corn side. The vendors have had the same set-up for years and there's a distinct segment of the TCS audience that doesn't consider their night complete without a roasted treat. “We really like sitting at the benches and eating outside, said Taylor Ericson. “The kids care more about the corn than they do the music.

at, drink and be merry because tonight it's a party on the Pier. Given the thousands of merrymakers who flock to the concert and surrounding beach every week, the party part of TCS is pretty obvious. There's music, dancing and thanks to the Friends With Me installation, the show even has a set of party balloons to set the mood. Additional upgrades to the season in 2016 include a more robust lineup of opening acts and bigger games on the pier that have combined to make a trip to the Twilight Concert Series into a complete evening's worth of entertainment. Capping the now all-evening experience is the world class food and dining options surrounding the show. If you want to enjoy the benefits of a real restaurant experience, both The Albright and Al Mare have a history of feeding hungry pier patrons. Al Mare's traces its roots all the way back to Rome where a group of friends developed a deep love of food. After moving to the states and discovering the beauty of the beach, the group used their native knowledge to open a classic Italian eatery. “This stunning 3-story restaurant is known for its Italian cuisine and ocean views, says their website. “The restaurant features a rooftop deck with full bar, 2nd floor balcony terraces, private dining room, and 1st floor exterior decks overlooking the Santa Monica Pier boardwalk and beautiful beaches. Al Mare has long been a supporter of TCS and its southern patio hosts the kickoff party every year. For the remaining nine shows, that same patio is open for guests to enjoy a meal and the show. Adjacent to Al Mare is another Pier stalwart, The Albright. Named after a nautical knot, the family owned restaurant has been feeding locals for almost 40 years. The Morena family recently secured the use of Popeye (also a Santa Monica native) for their branding. “The Albright grew out of one family's love and commitment to the dynamic beachside community of Santa Monica, said the owners. “After 35 years as SM

Protoje's visibility has steadily increased with articles being written in major publications ahead of his album release, and a major achievement was being named to the BBC 1xtra Hot for 2015 Artiste list so he will be promoted across the BBC platform. Artistes were selected because As Mista Jams of BBC stated; "they're producing the quality music needed to become big in the next 12 months. It's a real cross section of really exciting new talent all currently on their A game." Protoje has been gaining momentum throughout the world, performing at quality venues to large audiences and will continue to tour consistently with his band The Indiggnation to promote ANCIENT FUTURE especially in Europe where several tours have already been booked as they continue to spread the music to the world. AUG 4TH - LATIN
NATALIA LAFOURCADE with MONSIEUR PERINÉ The most awarded artist of the last edition of the Latin Grammys started her successful career at age 14, when she joined the pop group Twist. It was then that she decided to devote her life to music and started attending music school.
She learned to play guitar and piano, as well as studied singing and dancing. Later on, she attended a music training program at Berklee College of Music in Boston and, when she was 16, she started writing her own songs. In 2002, at age 17, she signed her first record deal with Sony Music and made her debut album: 'Natalia Lafourcade', which was produced by Loris Ceroni and Aureo Baqueiro. In 2005, she released her second album: 'Casa', which she wrote along with her band 'La Forquetina'. In 2006, after spending nine months in Canada, she wrote the instrumental album 'The Four Seasons of Love', which she recorded with the Youth Symphony Orchestra of the State of Veracruz. At the same time, she also wrote some of the songs for her next solo album: 'Hu Hu Hu', which was released in 2009. Her fifth album is the magnificent 'Mujer Divina - Tribute to Agustin Lara', which has set common ground between generations and highlights the romantic character of Mexican hearts. Musicians such as Gilberto Gil, Vicentico, Miguel Bosé, Lila Downs, Adrián Dargelos (Babasónicos), Meme (Café Tacuba), Jorge Drexler, León Larregui (Zoé), Leonardo de Lozanne, Leonel García and Kevin Johansen contributed to this album. The album has become Platinum, SEE BIOS PAGE 10

AUG 11TH - DANCE
RÜFÜS DU SOL with MARC BAKER A lot can change in two years, and for a band selling out shows in places they'd never visited two years ago, a lot certainly has changed. What hasn't changed for RÜFÜS is a unique approach to their song writing that has seen them gather an ever increasing swathe of fans all over the world from Sydney to Berlin. Two years after their platinum selling debut album, RÜFÜS return with their follow up record, Bloom, and as the title would suggest, the band have blossomed into the tour-de-force that Atlas hinted at. Bloom picks up right where Atlas left off, it's dreamy vocals, moody synths and driving kicks. This time delivered with the confidence of a band who understands their place in the world; as musicians and as people. There is a maturity in Jon, James
and Tyrone's production work that comes from spending two years on the road testing new songs. They've figured out what works and more importantly, why. Bloom is the product of isolation and saturation. The songwriters either being alone and away from friends and family, or at home soaked in familiarity. The only constant in the writing process was the three songwriters spending each day writing with the goal of creating a feeling. They start each project with an idea of a feeling, a setting, a location or a scene in their minds, and try to soundtrack that moment. Hunt says, “We were writing feelings more than songs. We were ready to cut a lot of the parts or elements to make sure there was this sense of exercising restraint, you don't want everything to sound big. If something goes down to almost nothing it makes the high points sound 20 times higher. And if you over-think something it can kill the spark sometimes." While making the album the trio found themselves dipping other mediums, filling their screen savers with underwater photography of animals. "That inspired the production, in some abstract way," Hunt says. "You get that feeling of floating underwater, the way water is darker the deeper you get." A bit of aqua-Googling later, they fell down an online sinkhole that told them a group of jellyfish is called a 'bloom' - and the trio found their album title. "The double meaning for Bloom felt perfect, things that can grow and flourish and open up over time," Hunt says. As the release of Bloom approaches it feels as if RÜFÜS have already broken the shackles of 2nd album syndrome. Early single You Were Right, is already certified Gold in their home country and has just won the ARIA award (Australian Grammy) for Best Dance Release. While the 3rd offering Innerbloom, at 9 minutes 38 seconds, is an ode to everything the band loves about dance music and everything Bloom means to them, Lindqvist explains; "For us personally, we were each drawn to electronic music because of the euphoric nature of it. At its core, it brings people together to dance. I'm sure I'm not the first person to say this, but our favourite artists
are our favourite because we've shared moments listening to them with friends or family that you can't recreate. Moments that stay with you. We really wanted to create those moments for other people with the songs from BLOOM. Innerbloom is probably the most personal song we've ever written in terms of where we are at as people. Hopefully, it can create for other people, some of the moments we've shared with each other and friends listening to our favourite songs...…" Using layered synths, drums and warm vocals, Jon, James and Tyrone have built a soundscape and aesthetic that is instantly familiar, yet distinctly their own. Bloom is written, recorded and produced by RÜFÜS. Available worldwide January 22.

AUG 18TH - CLASSIC
MAVIS STAPLES with THE SUFFERS Mavis Staples is living, breathing history. She is an alchemist of American music, having continuously crossed genre lines like no musician since Ray Charles. Weaving herself into the very fabric of gospel, soul, folk, pop, R B, blues, rock, and
hip hop over the last 60 years, this iconic singer has seen and sung through so many changes, always rising up to meet every road. Now in her seventh decade, with the release of her new album Livin' on a High Note (ANTIH), she is only gaining momentum. Produced by M. Ward with songs by Neko Case, Justin Vernon, Nick Cave, Ben Harper, Tune-Yards, Aloe Blacc and others, the album serves as a summation and furtherance of her illustrious career. Refusing to fade away, she continues to tour incessantly, remaining as vital, engaged, and true as always. There is no persona; she is, simply and untouchably, Mavis - and Livin' on a High Note is the symphony of her life. “I think about this album as a new beginning in my career,” says Mavis. “I'm living on a high note, I'm floating on air. I know I don't have as much time on this Earth as I've already had, but I see it as saying, 'Mavis has been here, y'all.' Before I move on, I just want to leave some Mavis with you that you're not used to hearing. I want to leave you with some joy and love, and some don't-forget-me songs.” And with those words, her high note is revealed not as a pinnacle of ease and wealth but as a righteous life. Mavis is here, having weaved in and through all that fabric for all these many years, to show us that true joy lies simply in living for others. It's the sermon Dr. King gave all those years ago, and we must be grateful that she is able to echo it for us now. Mavis takes usnot only there, but back, up, and through. Since her first recording at age 13 in 1954, Mavis Staples has learned from, worked with, and schooled countless legends, and has brought her own timeless talent to every performance. From the Delta-inflected gospel sound she helped create in the 1950s with her father, Pops, and her brother and sisters as The Staple Singers, to the freedom songs of the Civil Rights era, to pop radio stardom during the Stax era with hits “I'll Take You There” and “Respect Yourself,” to The Last Waltz, to serving as muse to both Bob Dylan and Prince at the peak of their careers, to 21st century collaborations with Van Morrison, Billy Preston, Zac Brown, Ry Cooder, Chuck D. and Willie Nelson, to her Grammy winning partnership with fellow Chicagoan Jeff Tweedy, the one constant has been Mavis and her singular voice. She has embraced her evolution, absorbing new sounds and ideas, rising to meet the challenges of longevity and bringing her message of hope and positivity to new listeners, song after song, show after show. on the complications of being together. Multi-Love adds dimensions to the band's already kaleidoscopic approach, with Nielson exploring a newfound appreciation for synthesizers. The new songs channel with the spirit of psych innovators without ignoring the last 40 years of music, forming a flowing, cohesive whole that reflects restless creativity. Cosmic escapes and disco rhythms speak to developing new vocabulary, while Nielson's vocals reach powerful new heights. “It felt good to be rebelling against the typical view of what an artists is today, a curator,” he says. “It's more about being someone who makes things happen in concrete ways. Building old synthesizers and bringing them back to life, creating sounds that aren't quite like anyone else's. I think that's much more subversive.” While legions of artists show fidelity to the roots of psychedelia, Unknown Mortal Orchestra shares the rare quality that makes the genre's touchstones so vital, constant exploration.
WEEK 10 SAVE FERRIS
BIOS FROM PAGE 10 WEEK 8

SAVE FERRIS with CIBO MATTO & JAKE DAVIS BAND
(Rusty's Emerging
Artist Competition Winner)
SAVE FERRIS is a ska-punk band formed circa 1995 in Orange County, Southern California. Their name is a reference to the 1986 film Ferris Bueller's Day Off. The band formed after the dissolution of a number of Southern California bands. With Monique Powell as manager, front person, and co-songwriter, the band began to book shows around Southern California to a great underground response. Financed by Powell's sister, the band released their debut EP "Introducing SAVE FERRIS" on Powell's label, Starpool Records, in 1996. They ended up selling close to 20,000 copies of their EP out of the trunks of their cars, with huge support from Orange County independent record shops and fans. That year, Powell provided vocals on the Reel Big Fishsong "She Has A Girlfriend Now" on their album "Turn the Radio Off" (Mojo). With Powell as manager and lead, and as favorites of KROQ radio's legendary Rodney
on the Rock, SAVE FERRIS created a presence on LA's KROQ radio, possibly being the first unsigned band to do this in LA alternative radio history. Later that year, the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences gave the band a Grammy showcase award for best unsigned band, earning them a recording contract with Epic Records (SONY). The band released their debut full-length album for Epic in 1997. "It Means Everything" featured several re-recorded tracks from the EP, several new songs, and, on Powell's urging, a cover of Dexy's Midnight Runners' "Come on Eileen," which the band released as their first official single, and what was to become their most successful single. The band also released "The World is New" as a single which was featured in the film "The Big Hit" starring Mark Wahlburg. Olympic medal winner Tara Lipinski used "The World is New" in her debut program as a professional skater in the nationally telecast 1998 Skate TV Championships. The band toured extensively in support of "It Means Everything", opening for bands such as Sugar Ray, The Offspring, and Reel Big Fish. In April 1998, they made their television debut on HBO's music series "REVERB" and made an on-screen appearance in the cult classic teen film, "10 Things I Hate About You". The album sold over 400,000 copies, and spawned three Top Ten hits in both Japan and Mexico. With two singles in the Billboard top 100 and full
rotation on alternative radio all over the world, SAVE FERRIS has managed to go Platinum internationally. Winter 1998 saw the departure of their drummer. After a thunderously successful main stage tour with the Vans Warped Tour, the band began writing their follow-up to "It Means Everything". The appropriately-titled "Modified" was released in October 1999. The album saw the band moving away from their ska-punk roots and into pop-punk territory. The band toured nationally with the band "Lit", of hit single "My Own Worst Enemy" fame. SAVE FERRIS continued to tour in support of "Modified" throughout 2000 and 2001. In August and September 2001 the band did a short tour of the UK. In the winter of 2002, SAVE FERRIS had the rare opportunity to play front and center at the nationally broadcast Winter Olympics Snowboarding Championships in Salt Lake City, Utah. Still fronted by their original lead singer, SAVE FERRIS has been through a number of changes in their musical lineup through the years. Powell self-financed what she called the "For the Fans" SAVE FERRIS US tour in 2003. On March 29, 2003 at Ska Summit 2003 in Las Vegas, SAVE FERRIS played on the main stage to a thunderously positive response. Other appearances of note Ms. Powell has made: "Mayor of the Sunset Strip" film, "Roswell" network television show, "The Conan O'Brien Show", "Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher", MTV's Loveline with Dr. Drew, the "Keenan Ivory Wayans" show, and the "Late Show with Craig Kilbourne".

FOOD & DRINK There are plenty of great food and beverage options on the deck and at the various restaurants on the Pier. Most even have to-go options perfect for munching during the show. As a reminder, alcohol consumption is not permitted in public spaces, but there are several full-service bars in the area.
BIKE/ SKATEBOARD VALET Park your wheels at the free bike and skateboard valet located next to the beach bike path just south of the Pier. Make it even easier and cruise over on a bike from the new Breeze Bike Share.
FIRST AID/ LOST & FOUND If you need first aid or assistance, please visit the Pier Tent or flag down a security officer. If it is an emergency, please call 911.

FRIENDS & FAMILY Bring them, the more the merrier. You will not regret it. This is one epic Summer tradition.
SEATING Seating is not provided, so feel free to bring your own chairs, blankets, etc...
