Dear Runners, Supporters and Fans: Welcome to the 2018 Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon! We are proud to return for the third year as the title sponsor for this iconic race. As a global company based in Los Angeles, we not only have strong Southern California roots, but also an outstanding international footprint. This year, we are excited to host more than 24,000 runners from all 50 states and more than 63 countries from around the world, who will join us in bringing this monumental event to life. On Sunday, March 18, 2018, you will be accomplishing something many people only dream about. From first-time marathoners, to half marathoners/charity runners, seasoned racers, and elite athletes, we commend you for choosing to participate in the 2018 Skechers Performance™ Los Angeles Marathon®. You have put in many long hours—training and making sacrifices—to embark on this momentous “Stadium to the Sea” race. We want to thank you for your dedication and perseverance. We also want to thank all the countless supporters; from the friends and families who will be cheering along the course, to the many volunteers giving their time and energy. This race would not be possible without you all. Whether you’re here for the pure love of running, camaraderie, to set a new personal record, or if you’re here raising money for an incredible cause, we look forward to seeing each of you at the finish line in Santa Monica and presenting you with a finisher medal that you thoroughly deserve.

MICHAEL GREENBERG
Dear Friends: On behalf of Conqur Endurance Group and our partners, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to Marathon Week and the 33rd Edition of the Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon. The week’s festivities kick off at Dodger Stadium on Sunday, March 11th when more than 6,000 students will take on their final mile to complete a marathon over an 8-week period as part of the LAUSD Beyond the Bell running program. It is wonderful to see the kids celebrate fitness and running in this world-class setting. On Friday, March 16 and Saturday, March 17, the LA Convention Center welcomes more than 45,000 athletes and supporters to the Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon Health and Fitness Expo. Some of the leading brands in the world will feature their latest products and services including title sponsor Skechers Performance, BIG 5 Sporting Goods, Air France, Hyundai, Muscle Milk, CLIF Bar and All Whites. On Saturday the 17th, Dodger Stadium will be ready for some 4,000 athletes who will participate in the LA BIG 5K and the LA 1/2K Kids Run. The 5K marks the third and final stage of the Triple 5K Tour of LA, comprised of the Santa Monica Classic 5K, the Pasadena 5K at the Rose Bowl and the LA BIG 5K. Hundreds of runners will proudly receive their Triple 5K Tour of LA bonus medal as they complete the LA BIG 5K. Overnight, Dodger Stadium will be transformed to welcome more than 24,000 athletes who will toe the line to run the iconic Stadium to the Sea course. New this year, we’re recognizing those who run consecutive Los Angeles Marathons with the LA Loyal bib in the dramatic black and gold color combination. For those who love to earn the bling, there are no less than 4 medals up for grabs: - the Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon medal; - the industry-first, spinning Conqur LA Challenge medal for participating in the Santa Monica Classic, the Pasadena Half Marathon at the Rose Bowl and the Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon; - the newly minted LA Double Play medal for completing the LA BIG 5K and the Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon; - and the very bold – and gold – LA Loyal medal inspired by, and replicating the inaugural 1986 Los Angeles Marathon medal for those completing 10 or more consecutive marathons with us. We’re proud to partner with 75 nonprofit organizations at this year’s Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon. Over the years, our charity program partners have raised more than $47 million for important environmental, educational, civic and health related causes. We sincerely appreciate the support from our partner cities in Los Angeles, West Hollywood, Beverly Hills and Santa Monica, without whose partnership and collaboration the marathon could not take place. The same is true of our 6,000 enthusiastic and loyal volunteers whose efforts are invaluable and paramount to producing a marathon of this scale. We are grateful to each and every volunteer and encourage our participants to thank them throughout the weekend. On behalf of our amazing partners and incredible staff, I wish everyone the best of luck and congratulate you on your tremendous achievements. Sincerely,
TRACEY RUSSELL Chief Executive Officer TRACEY RUSSELL

CARBS, REST AND PLANNING MAKE FOR A SAFE MARATHON EXPERIENCE T
he night before the Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon, Dr. Carolyn Kaloostian wants you to get in the zone. “If you’ve trained properly, you are going to run on default,” Dr. Kaloostian said from her medical office at Keck School of Medicine of University of Southern California where she is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Family Medicine and Geriatrics. With three marathons under her own belt, Dr. Kaloostian personally knows the toll 26.2 miles of pavement take on your body. “Go at your own pace and try not to let the hype of the event get to you.” When Dr. Kaloostian ran the Los Angeles Marathon as a teenager, she made a checklist the night before of everything she needed to remember and touch base with friends and family who planned to cheer her on along the way. Now as a doctor at USC’s medical school, she passes on the same advice to her patients. “You need to go to your sweet place physically and mentally. Keep in the zone and remember everyone has a different zone,” Dr. Kaloostian said. The adrenaline of the race start can lead some runners to begin running too quickly. Beginning slowly to start can help avoid a late race flame out.
14
DR. CAROLYN KALOOSTIAN
Although the secret to a successful marathon comes from months of preparation, Dr. Kaloostian says loading up a “carbolicious” meal the night before can help provide energy to sustain your run from “Stadium to the Sea”. She also advocates eating during the race as well, specially formulated gels with electrolytes and carbohydrates or other quick snacks that can prevent cramps along the way. “You should not feel any unusual pain, even towards the end of the marathon,” Dr. Kaloostian said. “If you do feel pain, I would encourage any runner to seek out a rest stop with a medical zone and talk to someone and rest. Check to make sure you’re safe to continue running. Don’t push through too much pain.” The Keck School of Medicine oversees 12 medical tents along the route
with 200 volunteer physicians, nurses and staff, including two aid stations at the Finish Line. On-site assistance includes basic first aid, over-the-counter painkillers, water, Gatorade Endurance and triage for those who experience serious medical issues. Danger signs include sharp pain, limping, confusion, lightheadedness, chest pain and shortness of breath. If you’ve done the training, however, doctors say race day can feel euphoric. “I hear from many of my patients who are marathon runners that they get this amazing second wind,” Dr. Kaloostian said. “It gets really good at the last half mile and even when they finish they are smiling from ear to ear.” Once you complete the race and move on to the celebration, water is still key. As you greet your family
2018 SKECHERS PERFORMANCE LOS ANGELES MARATHON
and friends at the Finish Line remember to stretch and cool down. “Hydrate well. Have a relaxing night. I would recommend a bath with salts. You may have a blister or two.” Even if you feel exhausted, Dr. Kaloostian recommends setting a timer the night after the race to wake up after four hours and drink water to rehydrate your system. She advises most patients to take a two week break from long distance running right after a marathon to allow their feet time to recover. “It’s a huge accomplishment,” Dr. Kaloostian said. “It’s been twenty years and I still feel so proud I was able to run the marathon in my home city. To this day it’s one of my best accomplishments. Running in itself gives you so much happiness. You get endorphins pulsing through your body.”

PRIDE OF LOS ANGELES POWERS THE SKECHERS PERFORMANCE LOS ANGELES MARATHON F
or the title sponsor of the Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon, race day is a celebration of the city they call home. Even as parent company Skechers continues to expand their global presence to more than 2,600 stores, the company’s headquarters remain in Manhattan Beach, just 12 miles from the Stadium to the Sea course finish line on Ocean Avenue in Santa Monica. Sponsoring the race is a way for the company to share its successes with the local community and get the word out about their running shoes and Performance brand. “2017 was a monumental year for Skechers as we achieved sales of more than $4 billion for the first time in our 25-year history,” said Skechers CEO Robert Greenberg, who calls Los Angeles home. Just two years ago, Skechers became the second largest athletic footwear brand in the U.S. Every year, more feet are hitting the pavement in Skechers’ Performance athletic wear. The shoes feature cutting edge technology formulated specifically for running, resulting in record sales last year and massive praise for Skechers. The magazine Men’s Journal called the Skechers GOmeb Razor one of the best new running shoes of 2017, perfect for both casual runners and advanced competitors.

THE 2018 LIMITED EDITION SKECHERS GO MEB RAZOR 2, DESIGNED FOR THE 2018 SKECHERS PERFORMANCE LOS ANGELES MARATHON
The lightweight and fast running shoe, Skechers GOmeb RazorTM, is marathon legend Meb Keflezighi’s official training shoe and features a removable insole for a custom fit, a molded heel for stability and a midfoot strike zone. Over the course of a nearly 30year career, Meb won both the New York City Marathon and the Boston Marathon, and he earned a silver medal at the 2004 Olympics in Athens. Meb retired from competitive running last year after completing his 26th marathon, however, he will continue to lace up his shoes and hit the road. Like most runners, a lifelong passion keeps him going. “Now that I am retired, I see myself continuing as an ambassador for the sport
and staying very involved in the running community,” the four-time U.S. Olympian said. “I’m still going to be running, just not competitively. Running has given me so many opportunities throughout my life, and I’m excited to give back and help the sport continue to grow.” The 2018 Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon limited edition running collection features the Skechers GOmeb Razor 2TM in yellow and pink and the Skechers GOrun Forza 3TM with a print of an iconic Southern California sunset behind palm trees. The Skechers GOrun Forza 3TM has more stability, complete with an inner support strap and an asymmetrical tongue to provide a secure fit. When runners pick up

their bibs, they’ll have the opportunity to purchase the limited-edition shoes and other gear at the Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon Expo store. Fans and racers will also have a chance to meet Meb—who will return to Los Angeles to cheer on a new generation of runners on race day. A UCLA graduate himself, this city has a special place in his heart. “Enjoy the journey you're going to experience on race day,” Meb said. “You have worked extremely hard to get to the starting line and the 26.2 miles that you will run are the reward for all of your training and dedication. You will not always feel great during the race, but get to that finish line and celebrate your accomplishment.”
CONGRATULATIONS MARATHON RUNNERS!
Meet us at the finish line for elevated American comfort fare and hand-crafted cocktails.
VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT It takes a village to put on the marathon F
or longtime marathon supporter Lisa Anderson, there’s nothing like watching new volunteers experience the Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon for the very first time. “I love to see when a runner takes a drink of water from a first time volunteer. They are elated with the joy of volunteering which opens up their minds to other volunteer options in the future,” Anderson said, who over the past three decades has helped with nearly every aspect of race day. She’s been in the warehouse packing goodie bags. She’s handed out bibs. For the past 20 years she’s been a Water Station Captain helping hand out those precious cups of water. “I’ve had two kids during the process and I even had my daughter in front of me in a baby carrier at 6-monthsold to work my water station,” Anderson said, whose three grown children now volunteer at the Los Angeles Marathon themselves. “In fact, my son will actually run this year. We are super excited. This year takes on a different meaning.” It takes a village to put on the marathon: 22 water stations along the route take about 150 volunteers each. All in all, it takes about 6,000 volunteers to make race week run smoothly. There are nearly 60 different volun-
36
teer assignment roles, including registration, water and medical stations, distributing race bibs and goodie bag gear, gear checks and information ambassadors. Many of those volunteers come back year after year and from all over the world to experience the energy and excitement of the Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon. For Austrian exchange student Sandra Deutsch, it’s a memory she will treasure for life. “I had absolutely no experience with volunteering at all and I didn’t know what to do, what to expect and how the people would be so I was unsure,” Deutsch said.
“But my doubts were misplaced. All the supervisors and volunteers were so nice, sweet, helpful and funny.” Thanks to a new partnership with the U.S. State Department, even more international volunteers will be helping with the race and the Health and Fitness Expo. Because of the J-1 Visa program, about 150 additional volunteers will be helping runners get set for the race and make it to the finish line. This year, Deutsch is back at home studying for exams, but says when she comes back to the U.S. to visit, she will volunteer again. “As the Austrian Arnold Schwarzenegger once said:
2018 SKECHERS PERFORMANCE LOS ANGELES MARATHON
‘I’ll be back,’” Deutsch joked. Whenever Deustch returns, chances are longtime volunteer Lisa Anderson will be there too. For her, it’s a family tradition that inspires everyone to pursue their dreams, whatever they may be. “The kids are always amazed with the wheelchair athletes,” Anderson said. “It inspires them in a way that is unexplainable. It is incredibly inspiring to see what and how others accomplish and push through for their dreams and goals. It’s an unbelievable experience that every person should experience at least once in their lifetime.”
TRIPLE RACE CHALLENGES WITH THE ULTIMATE BLING EFFECT Conqur LA Challenge and Triple 5K Tour of LA are a reverie for runners
F
or most, the rush of running is only part of the reward; the real reward is what awaits when you cross that finish line. And that is exactly the hunt that drives the quest for the runners to take on the Conqur LA Challenge and the Triple 5k Tour of LA. The Triple 5K Tour of LA is a series comprised of the Santa Monica Classic 5K, the Pasadena 5K at the Rose Bowl and the LA BIG 5K at Dodger Stadium. The Conqur LA Challenge series takes place at the same time and within the same venues as the Triple 5K series. The Conqur LA Challenge has a gradual distance cadence build-up to the Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon: a 5 or 10k at the Santa Monica Classic, a half marathon in Pasadena at the Rose Bowl, and culminating with 26.2 miles at the Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon. Athletes that complete the Triple 5K Tour of LA or Conqur LA Challenge receive the already coveted bonus medals.

One runner who fell in love with running and speaks of the virtues of these programs is Miriam Macias. As a toddler, Macias grew up in the Los Angeles area and was a spectator at her first Los Angeles Marathon. The thousands of people in full stride, running in unison, challenging their bodies in ways they never knew they could wowed a young Macias. She dreamt of joining them one day when she was old enough to participate. However, she had some setbacks. “I was born with hip dysplasia,” the now 23-year-old Macias said in a phone interview. “It’s basically a kind of
dislocation of the hip. Doctors thought I wasn’t going to be able to walk in my lifetime.” After several surgeries and time spent in casts, Macias proved doctors wrong; she walked. With one foot in front of the other, she soon got to experience her first love: running. After “a few 5Ks here and there,” and participating in high school and college track and cross-country teams, Macias wanted more, she wanted to conquer her dream, the Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon. “I remember registering … the whole experience is still such a beautiful memo-
2018 SKECHERS PERFORMANCE LOS ANGELES MARATHON
ry,” Macias said. “On race day I was so nervous. The first couple miles, my parents kept calling to ask if I was okay. At the finish line, we were all crying.” Macias is now in her third year as Ambassador for the organizer of these series, Conqur Endurance Group. Her work entails promoting races, interacting with runners, and most important to Macias, sharing her experiences and giving back to a sport she loves. With the Conqur LA Challenge, Macias says the gradual increase in miles is useful in preparing a runner for the rigors of a marathon, a program that gets your body prepared for the big run, perfect for first-timers and expert runners alike. The distances may seem daunting, but Macias thinks if someone like her could finish the race, so can you. “If you set your mind to it, you can accomplish and conquer anything. And if anyone needs a little extra motivation, the medals we are awarded for completing one of these triple events’ series are absolutely world class. Seriously, I have not experienced medals like these, and you know, who doesn’t appreciate some serious bling you can proudly wear and share with all your friends on social media!”
IN THE LA ROAD RUNNERS FAMILY, FINISHING THE MARATHON IS JUST PART OF THE DEAL
T
he Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon is, in a word, enormous. 24,000 athletes participating, 63 different countries represented, an athlete participating from all 50 united states, a mass of bodies engaging with 26.2 miles of Los Angeles and its varied terrain. As a runner, participating in the Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon could seem daunting. That is unless you surround yourself with an encouraging running community, and that is exactly what the LA Road Runners are all about. With Venice as a base, LA Road Runners (LARR) is California’s largest marathon training group with a reach extending to Long Beach, Pasadena, Downtown LA and Manhattan Beach. Through the first-of-its-kind affiliate partner training program, athletes all over the southland now have access to vetted, impactful programs to prepare them for the marathon. At this year’s marathon, over 1,000 athletes will be representing LARR with close to 2,000 more coming from affiliate partner training programs such as Pasadena Pacers, BlacklistLA, AREC Long Beach, South Bay Runners Club and LA Leggers. LARR is designed to unite the Los Angeles running community, providing participants ranging from beginner and experienced to young and old with local, affordable, certified training programs that’ll get you across the finish line
40
in March. The LARR Program offers many benefits, among them a 26-week custom training plan, weekly practices led by a professional coach, guest speakers, and 20 levels of pace groups and pace leaders. It’s a program designed at the local level but one that has helped athletes hailing from Japan to the UK. With all these program perks, perhaps the most important asset the LA Road Runners provides is an immeasurable benefit: a sense of acceptance. “If you’re new to LA Road Runners the first week, you’ll be family by the end of that same week”, LARR Head Coach Mark Minichiello says. “The best thing that comes out of LARR is you become hooked. Life-long friendships are established, you feel confident about yourself, and you finish something most people think they will never do. You spend hun-
dreds of hours doing these things with people you come to know and love. LA Road Runners is the glue that brings all of that together.” LARR is an inclusive running group, with Program Coordinator (and wife to Coach Mark Minichiello) Maria Miller saying they want to appeal to all Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon participants, not just runners. “When people hear ‘marathon training’ they think running all day, but we’re designed for all types. This program breaks stereotypes, people here have all shapes and sizes. Everyone is meant to feel part of the family here. If you can walk, we will get you over that finish line.” To cater to all participants, the LA Road Runners provides twenty different pace groups for veterans and firsttimers alike. Groups one through ten are the runner groups, with athletes in this category projected to finish
2018 SKECHERS PERFORMANCE LOS ANGELES MARATHON
the marathon within three to five hours. Groups eleven through seventeen run and walk the course, while the remaining three groups walk the distance to Santa Monica. “People have a positive experience with this program,” Minichiello says. “Newbies especially. They join us in September, they’re uncomfortable. By January, once they've done the workouts, they’re confident, you see the transformation. The results show on race day.” For those running, walk/running, or walking the marathon, LARR will ensure you never feel alone. If you happen to lose track of your pace group or running partner come race day, don’t be overwhelmed; Miller says your new running family will always have your back. “If you see someone and they have a LARR shirt, you're my team, you’re my family. I'm here for you. We’re in this together.”
LA LOYAL – INSPIRED BY OUR VERY OWN LEGACY RUNNERS T
his year the Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon proudly introduced a new program to honor our repeat runners – those running the Stadium to the Sea course year after year. Welcome to LA Loyal -our way of thanking our returning runners. If this will be your second (or more) Marathon finish in a row -- welcome to the club! You’ll earn your unique black and gold graphics race bib that stands out among fellow runners. Five consecutive finishes earn you a limited-edition shirt and travel mug also adorned with LA Loyal marks. The reward for ten consecutive finishes is a limited-edition shirt, sweatshirt and the certain to be coveted Bold & Gold commemorative medal featuring the classic design of the original Los Angeles Marathon medal from 1986! LA Loyal puts you in exclusive company with only about 1,000 runners eligible this year for the 5-year swag and about 500 eligible to claim the 10-year Bold & Gold Medal. LA Loyal members have run marathons all over the world. Many are local. But all share the common bond of pounding the pavement for the 26.2 mile stretch of open streets that flows through the Walk of Fame, the Sunset Strip, West Hollywood, Rodeo Drive, Brentwood and Santa Monica.

“I’ve always run the Los Angeles Marathon,” said Leon C. who began his streak in 1999 as a teenager with Students Run Los Angeles. He’s come back year after year. “I ran it when it was really hot. I ran it when it was pouring rain three times. I run because I love to run.” Another local, Anne H., will cross the finish line on Ocean Avenue in Santa Monica for the sixth time this year. “Like the city itself, the Los Angeles Marathon takes a back seat to no one,” Anne said. “The course is difficult but not ridiculously punishing, which allows runners of different levels and abilities to participate. This is what makes it such a great race for the community,
because most of us know somebody who is competing in the race each year.” The LA Loyal program was inspired by the Legacy Runners, an impressive group of 144 athletes who have run every single Los Angeles Marathon. This year will make number 33 in a row. “When you come across that finish line you’re going to be a different person. You’ll feel different about who you are and what you’re capable of as a person” said Legacy Runner Johnnie Jameson, who was featured in the recent documentary Mile 19 about his repeat performances. The U.S. Postman and Veteran Jameson ran his first two Los Angeles Marathons

backwards (just for fun!) and has been coming back every year since. Now that he’s 70 years old, he feels fortunate to have the group of friends he’s made through the marathon. “I’ve never been involved in any kind of group all my life and this is the first time I find myself committed to being with people to converse about all the good things about life,” Jameson said. The Legacy Runners are a tight-knit group that now get together every year after the race to share their journeys. Jameson advises younger runners who want to build a marathon streak to have fun, pace themselves and focus on making it to the finish line. Irrespective of whether this is your first marathon or you’re wearing the unique LA Loyal consecutive race bib, be sure to high-five our Legacy Runners when you see one of them. And that’s not difficult: they stand out. Only 144 of the runners on course have earned the right to have their own name printed on the bib – in addition to LEGACY RUNNER. Hats off to all our participants but particularly our repeat finishers!
YOUTH INITIATIVES INVITE THE WHOLE FAMILY TO TAKE PART IN THE FUN C
onqur Endurance Group believes that it’s never too early to start living a healthy lifestyle. Furthering its healthy lifestyle for all commitment, Conqur continues to add participation-options for aspiring runners of all ages, including the 26th Mile, an assortment of kids runs, and Conqur’s unique partnership with Students Run LA (SRLA), which each year takes close to 3,500 at risk students on a journey to the Marathon finish line and a positive detour for the rest of their lives. The LA 1/2K Kids Run, one of three kids running events in Conqur’s race calendar, takes place at the LA BIG 5K at Dodger Stadium the day before the marathon and shares the Marathon Start Line giving kids a big-event feel and encouragement. About a quarter mile long, the run is designed to involve the whole family and more specifically, as Conqur’s Senior Manager of Nonprofit and Community Partnerships Rachel Sanchez says, is focused on “creating lifelong runners who truly enjoy the sport not as much for the competition but for the joy of the sport and participation.” Participants will receive a T-shirt, bib, a bag filled with goodies from our generous sponsor Big 5 Sporting Goods, as well as a medal. Lucie Murray, of Run Kids Run, a program that helps organize the kids runs with Conqur, says that “the medal empowers children and provides them an incentive to
44
run more often, keeping them healthy and providing a means to physically express themselves”. “We’re always looking to add a kids’ component to any athletic event,” Murray says. “It’s a great opportunity to get kids involved in the community, and it’s fun and health oriented. Running is accessible to everybody. While a 5-year-old can’t run a marathon, they can complete a kids’ event and have a medal to show for it.” No worries, though, mom and dad — that medal is made from rubber to keep all ages safe. Other Conqur kids’ runs include the Surfer Shuffle Kids Run at Santa Monica Classic (September 2018) and Rose Bowl Rush at the Pasadena Half Marathon (January 2019). These runs are also around a quarter mile long and give kids the
ability to see Los Angeles in a fun, inclusive way with their families. The Pasadena event finishes on the Rose Bowl field – an incredible thrill for runners of all ages! Students Run LA (SRLA) is a non-profit program which includes 175 LAUSD high schools that gives app 3,500 at risk students the opportunity to train and run the Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon for free. This year Conqur provides approximately $1 million in free or reduced-price entries to support SRLA at the Marathon and Pasadena Half Marathon at the Rose Bowl. Since 2010, Conqur’s first year as organizer of the Los Angeles Marathon, Conqur has donated over $6.5 million in race fees in support of the SRLA program. Beyond the Bell’s 26th Mile Run is another LAUSD/Conqur youthfocused collaboration, teach-

ing students the importance of combining healthy nutritional choices with physical activity. This eight-week program educates students about the importance of healthy eating habits and exercise. The students are challenged to run 25 miles in short increments leading up to the 26th Mile. Last year over 25,000 children in grades K-5 participated in the program, with more than 6,000 running their final (26th) mile at Dodger Stadium. Those not at Dodger Stadium run their 26th Mile at their schools. Watching 6,000 kids take on their 26th mile the week before the Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon is truly a sight to behold. The pride these kids show when crossing the finish line and are rewarded with a medal for completing the marathon distance is truly inspiring.

LOS ANGELES’ OWN JUSTIN TURNER TO KICK-OFF SKECHERS PERFORMANCE LOS ANGELES MARATHON
T
his year, the Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon is recognizing, fostering and rewarding civic pride in a fresh, new way with the LA Loyal program. It’s fitting, then, that they partner with a homegrown, Los Angeles Dodger who embodies the grit and determination this city was built on. On Sunday, March 18th, runners will be welcomed to the start line of the marathon and home of the Dodgers by third baseman and MVP of the National League Championship Series, Justin Turner. Aside from serving as an official race ambassador and race starter at this year’s Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon, Justin’s own Justin Turner Foundation is one of this year’s official charities. The athletes on Justin’s team will fundraise through their participation in the full marathon, the Stadium vs. Sea Charity Challenge and Saturday’s LA BIG 5K at Dodger Stadium. Fundraising team members on Justin’s Foundation team can win an array of prizes once certain fundraising milestones are hit. Prizes include autographed baseballs, t-shirts, Dodger jerseys and passes to watch Dodgers batting practice. For the dedicated home run hitters of fundraising, the top prize includes tickets to a Dodgers

game and dinner for the fundraiser and a guest with Turner and his wife. “Justin is a hero, not because he wears a Dodger uniform, but because he plays with grit and determination and uses his platform to selflessly help those in need through his foundation,” Ryan Cavinder, Senior Manager of Marketing & Communications at Conqur Endurance Group, says. “Justin is the epitome of what it means to be LA Loyal and we’re honored to have him represent this great race.” Money raised from the fundraising teams will go to many great causes helping individuals and families in need. Clint Carlton, Turner's friend and director of public
relations for the Dream Center, a faith-based charitable organization in Echo Park, speaks positively about the local hero: “Turner isn’t the kind of guy to just “write checks on the sideline” - Turner prefers a personal touch to his philanthropy. He wants to be in on the front lines with everything that the Justin Turner Foundation does”. Carlton added, “From raising money for, and building homes for homeless veterans and visiting children and families with life-altering illnesses, to giv-

ing away toys and bikes to children at Christmas to opening a Literacy Center with the Dodgers Foundation, Turner’s there to proudly be the face of his own donation efforts. CONQUR AMBASSADORS OFFER THE BEST TOUR OF LA N
o one should train for the Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon alone, so this year a group of 14 Conqur Endurance Group Ambassadors helped participants every step of the way. The hand-picked group of motivational athletes have been sharing their stories for the past year on social media, inspiring thousands to cross the finish line in Santa Monica on March 18th. All of the ambassadors are runners who have completed the Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon multiple times and are active in their own running communities, both social media based and inperson training groups “It’s a great way to follow what’s going on,” said Ryan Cavinder, Senior Manager, Marketing and Communications at Conqur Endurance Group. “You should definitely follow them on social media to get an insider’s view of the marathon.” Ambassador Captain, Linzie Starr, leads the pack with 25 marathons and more than 50 half marathons under his belt. The Los Angeles native discovered his love for running by accident when he started jogging in 2011 to live a healthier lifestyle. You can follow him @sharpendurance for race reviews, words of

encouragement and his ultramarathon journey to 100 miles. While running has taken him all over the United States, the Stadium to the Sea route will always be his favorite. “I personally tell people it’s the best tour of LA you can take,” Starr said. “You get to see all the landmarks and all the hot spots and then you have a party at the beach. It’s the best.” The four-time marathon ambassador even has a favorite mile on the race. “There’s something about running and turning left onto Rodeo Drive around Mile 17,” Starr said, who has loved the spot ever since his very first marathon. “I put my arms out and posed like I
was flying. Whatever pain I was feeling in that moment disappeared. The neighborhood was lined with people and everyone was there cheering. The pain came back later but there’s something about LA that just makes you smile.” Starr is just one of fourteen personalities to add to your list to follow. You can also keep up with Brett Copeland’s love of running and Southern California breweries @run_for_beer. Make sure you tag your posts #lamarathon while you train, pick up your bib or even just enjoy a gorgeous sunset in LA. Interested in applying to be an ambassador for next year? Conqur will be hosting an “audition” during race week this year. Visit lamarathon.com or facebook.com/lamarathon to fill out the interest form and then showcase your social media skills throughout race week. DODGER STADIUM
DODGER STADIUM Sitting atop its perch in Chávez Ravine, Dodger Stadium appears to preside over Downtown Los Angeles. Construction began on the stadium in 1959 and it opened in 1962 after the Dodgers moved from Brooklyn to L.A. The third oldest baseball stadium still in use today, it was also the home of the California Angels until 1965. Dodger Stadium seats more people than any other baseball stadium in the country. OLVERA STREET Situated on the site of the original Los Angeles settlement, Olvera Street takes its name from Agustin Olvera, the first judge in Los
Angeles County. Today it acts as a thriving Mexican marketplace where tourists and shoppers alike find brightly colored piñatas, sombreros and pottery in addition to the smells of Mexican cuisine. But Olvera has had a rocky history since its establishment as the central plaza for the early settlement. With the expansion of L.A., it lay forgotten by the 1920s and became a gateway to downtown for Mexican immigrants. Its revitalization began in 1926 when the city agreed to save the Avilla Adobe, the oldest home in L.A., from demolition. Since then, it has grown into a bustling tourist attraction and historic site.
CATHEDRAL OF OUR LADY OF THE ANGELS Towering over Downtown Los Angeles, the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels steeps the community in cultural and religious significance, serving as the archdiocese of more than four million Catholics. Visible from the Hollywood Freeway and located on an elevated section of the old Bunker Hill, the cathedral marks the location of the Archbishop’s celebration honoring the major liturgies of the year. The cathedral is rich in cultural diversity and holds Sunday mass in 42 different languages. Inside, visitors are brought to awe by the beautifully colored
stained glass depicting religious figures outlined by vivid gold, burgundy and royal blue tones. With further exploration, the main church contains smaller wings colored by art pieces and paintings. HOLLYWOOD SIGN On a clear day in L.A. it’s hard to miss the Hollywood Sign looming from its place atop Mt. Lee. The original sign, constructed in 1923, spelled out “Hollywoodland” and served as an advertisement for L.A. Times publisher Harry Chandler’s new real estate development. Originally adorned with flashing lights, the sign fell SEE LANDMARK PAGE 56

into disrepair throughout much of the mid-1900s. In the early 1940s, the Hollywoodland real estate development went under and by 1949 the “land” had been removed. TCL CHINESE THEATER Located along the historic Hollywood Walk of Fame, TCL Chinese
Theater was commissioned in 1926, and celebrated its opening in 1927 with the premiere of Cecil B. DeMille’s film “The King of Kings.” One of the theater’s most distinctive points of attraction is the concrete blocks set in the court, which bears the signatures, footprints and handprints of more than 200 celebrities spanning from the 1920s to present day. Structurally daunting,
the theater rises more than 90-feet with two red coral columns adorned by wrought iron masks holding up the dazzling bronze roof. Adding to the grand design, between the columns is a 30-foot high dragon carved from stone. The theater was declared a historic-cultural landmark in 1968. CHATEAU MARMONT HOTEL Modeled after Chateau d’Amboise in the French Loire Valley, the Chateau Marmont Hotel has brought a little French class to the city of L.A. It opened in 1927 as an apartment house, but high rents and the Great Depression kept business away. When it reopened as a hotel in 1931, it saw an influx in celebrity clientele. BEVERLY HILLS CITY HALL The Beverly Hills City Hall has presided over the city since 1932 when architect William Gage created the building in the Spanish Renaissance style. through Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico and Arizona. The route was traversed as a path for migrants who traveled west during the Dust Bowl of the 1930s and towns built up along the road to cater to these travelers. It was then popularized by the Nat King Cole Trio song “(Get Your Kicks On) Route 66.” The road was removed from the U.S. Highway System in 1985 but various portions have been desig-

nated national scenic byways. In 2009, the Santa Monica Pier became the official end of Route 66, even though it originally ended at the intersection of Lincoln and Olympic boulevards. SANTA MONICA PIER The Santa Monica Pier has a storied history as a world-famous tourist attraction. When first built in 1909, it was meant to be a municipal pier to carry sewage to the water. It wasn’t until 1916 that a shorter pleasure pier was built. In 1922 the famed carousel was added. During its heyday, the pier was home to the La Monica Ballroom and a variety of rides and attractions. When the city took control of the pier in 1953, many Santa Monicans feared this foreshadowed its demise. In the 1970s, citizens organized to preserve the pier from being converted into a resort hotel and the city eventually rescinded its decision. Tourists can still find the carousel and amusement park situated atop the pier, which celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2009.

housands of runners who participate in this year’s LA BIG5K and Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon are using their participation to raise money for a cause; this year another option has been added: The Stadium vs Sea Charity Challenge. The Charity Challenge is a race within a race. Participants in the new challenge will raise money and awareness for their favorite charity, all while experiencing their favorite section of the famous Stadium to the Sea course. Athletes have the option to either run from Dodger Stadium to Hollywood (“Stadium”) or from Hollywood to Santa Monica (“Sea”), finishing off when they cross the finish line on Ocean Avenue in Santa Monica. The contest will honor individuals and charities that raise the most money. There will also be awards for fastest mile pace for each section and overall. Of course, runners can still choose to fundraise as part of taking on the full 26.2 miles or the LA BIG 5K on St. Patrick’s Day. This year, the participating charities in the official Charity Program of the Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon are on track to raise $4 million for great causes like cancer research, autism, and animal rescue groups like Angel

City Pit Bulls. “It’s a really great opportunity for charities to involve their supporters in something that will give back to the community,” said Senior Manager of Nonprofit and Community Partnerships Rachel Sanchez. “Running a marathon is an extremely transformative experience. In this case, it’s a win-win. You are changing your own life and at the same time you’re also changing someone else’s.” Los Angeles animal rescue organization Angel City Pit Bulls has about 80 runners taking part in one of the three races this year with the goal of raising $150,000 to help them rescue more dogs from shelters.
“The marathon is our biggest fundraiser every year,” said Peggy Kennedy, who is running the marathon for Angel City this year. Kennedy says most of the money they raise will go toward medical treatment for dogs who need surgery or medication before they can be adopted by a loving family. “There are still a lot of dogs that are adoptable but have medical issues and we are saving more and more dogs that need a lot of medical work.” The money they raised through the Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon and other events has helped Angel City Pit Bulls save over 700 dogs since their inception (and 15 kit-

tens!). The dogs go into foster care with their volunteers, receive free obedience training and medical care before finding their forever homes. Frank McCourt, who owns Conqur Endurance Group, envisions that every runner who participates in the Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon will eventually race on behalf of their favorite charity. The passion for generosity has led the marathon to raise $47 million dollars since 1988, setting escalating fundraising goals year after year.
