Stress baking has been a survival tactic for many home-bound residents but sometimes you just need the goods without the hassle and Santa Monica has every end of the bakery spectrum covered. Sourdough was an internet celebrity for a couple of months but local bread a cionados have long known about the power of this protein packed baked good thanks to Jack Bezian. Bezian Bakery uses a from scratch process for their immensely popular sourdough breads that includes growing their own sourdough cultures and raising each of their 40 types of bread for up to 30 days. It’s a process Jack Bezian painstakingly developed with decades of research, but the results are unassailable according to customers who also know that each purchase comes with a mini masterclass in the health benefits of sourdough bread.

Bezian has been absent from the market recently in accordance with LA County Public Health and Safety COVID guidelines, which currently do not allow prepared food vendors to participate in the farmers markets but o cials said they look forward to welcoming him back soon as part of the Downtown Farmers Market family.

HUCKLEBERRY BAKERY & CAFE

At the other end of the spectrum is the sweet treats at Huckleberry Bakery and Café.

The always popular eatery is part of the Rustic Canyon Family, co-ownd by Josh Loeb and Zoe Nathan. The pair grew up in Santa Monica, raise their family here and run a variety of restaurants in this city. Josh and Zoe debuted Huckleberry in February 2009, as they both shared a desire to open a local, artisan bakery and café where friends, family and enthusiastic food lovers could come together and eat delicious food in a warm, casual atmosphere.

Santa Monican’s with a sweet tooth can also indulge at the local Sweet Lady Jane location. The business has been a fixture in Los Angeles since 1988 when Jane Lockhart turned her passion for quality into a thriving business.

At Sweet Lady Jane they break our own eggs, peel their own apples, roll their own pastry, and squeeze their own lemons. They use only the finest imported chocolate, the freshest butter and cream, the highest quality in-season fruit, no mixes (as many bakeries do), and no preservatives. It’s a recipe that has served them well and continues to keep locals well stocked on all their dessert essentials.
