Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) exposes PCs in just 84 seconds: Sophos’ study Sophos has launched a new research, ‘RDP Exposed: The Threat That’s Already at your Door’. Sophos’ new RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol) research highlights how attackers are able to find RDP-enabled devices almost as soon as these devices appear on the internet. Sophos deployed 10 geographically dispersed, low-interaction honeypots to measure and quantify RDP-based risks. The honeypots were set-up in California, Frankfurt, Ireland, London, Mumbai, Ohio, Paris, Sao Paulo, Singapore, and Sydney over a 30-day period. On average, the RDP honeypots were hit by 1 attempted attack per six seconds. RDP continues to be a source of sleepless nights for sysadmins. Sophos has been reporting on cybercriminals exploiting RDP since 2011, and in the past year, cybercriminal gangs behind two of the biggest targeted ransomware attacks, Matrix and SamSam, have almost completely abandoned all other methods of network ingress in favour of using RDP. “Most recently, a remote code execution flaw in RDP – , who nicknamed BlueKeep (CVE-2019-0708) – has been hitting the headlines. This is a vulnerability so serious it could be used to trigger a ransomware outbreak that could potentially spread around the world in hours.

What started in 1984 as a desire to connect different systems, twelve years later turned into a commitment to the channels as a strategic route to the market. By 2001, Cisco had introduced its value based partner program that was supplemented by its profitability programs VIP/OIP/

“IN TODAY’S WORLD, INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS CAN BE DEVELOPED BY ANYONE, ANYWHERE— AND THEN SCALED TO HELP PEOPLE AROUND THE WORLD. THIS IS THE POWER OF CONNECTION, AND NO ONE CONNECTS BETTER THAN CISCO.” SIP three years later. It took Cisco 26 years of perseverance to venture into the collaborative channels and create its own worldwide partner organization. Since 2015, Cisco has been consistently working on enhancing its partner ecosystem, and now in 2019, it is a force to reckon with in the Digital Transformation journey that is centred on the expansion of the role of its partners. Today, Cisco has over 2300 partners nationwide that range from Industry Partners, Integrators, Distributors, Service Providers and Consultants to ISVs, MSI/EPCs and Technology. What lies for the organization ahead is an unimpeded expansion of the playing field, wherein Cisco extends its incessant support to its partners in building their transformational capabilities. POWER OF ALLIANCES The 65 years of Independence have seen the growth of the Indian economy to a $2 Trillion economy. With the rate at which the enterprises are currently progressing, the next ten years hold the promise of turning Indian into a $5 Trillion digital economy. As the enterprises embrace the new world order of Technology, what we are looking forward to, is a steep increase in the digital economic impact from six percent to approximately twenty percent of the GDP in just a period of five years. The question that arises in the face of these statistics is -by what forces will such a monumental growth be driven in the Indian Economy? To address this, Cisco celebrated the ethos of Partnerships in the Cisco India Summit 2019, conducted on 29th – 30th July in Kochi. The theme for the two day conference was ‘Power of Alliances’. From looking back to and celebrating the partnerships that Cisco has had for decades,

to establishing new enterprise relationships, Cisco continued on its journey of exploring the power of partnerships. “The way forward if you want to grow and keep pace with the innovation on the business side, it is no more about serving old and new customers with existing business models. It is about serving new customers with new business models. That is the change that Cisco wants to bring,” said Sameer Garde, President, India & SAARC. Garde kickstarted the event with a discussion of the three pillar model for market creation that has guided Cisco in all its operations. The three pillars are Programmability of businesses, New GTM and business models and Collaboration &Coinnovation. It is this proactive approach of going the extra mile to reach the customers you thought you could never acquire, that has led Cisco to becoming the market leader that it is today. The event saw a series of groundbreaking announcements being made by the Cisco leaders. The highlight of the Summit though was unveiling of the Cisco-Google alliance to offer high-speed public Wifi in India. Cisco will work with Google’s gStation platform to provide communities around the country, access to a free, open, high-quality public Wi-Fi. In line with Google and Cisco’s shared vision of connecting 1.3 billion Indians to the digital economy, the project has already begun its first phase of implementation in Bengaluru. By September 2019, 200 locations in Bengaluru will be Wi-Fi enabled, followed by another 300 in the second phase. With this initiative, Google and Cisco are looking forward to engaging over 1,750,000,000 new internet users by 2025. “According to a TRAI report, globally there is 1 WiFi hotspot for every 150 people, and in India, 8 million additional hotspots must be installed

to achieve the same ratio, creating new market opportunities for infrastructure providers and internet service providers. India has only 52,000 Wi-Fi hotspots today, necessitating a proactive strategy to make high-speed Wi-Fi hotspots ubiquitous across the country,” states Cisco. Google identifies the challenges faced by the Next Billion Users globally, who are majorly a generation of mobile only users. These challenges include high device prices, lack of storage, mobile data constraints and the paucity of locallyrelevant content, apps and services. Google-Cisco alliance proposes to address these challenges by offering Access, Platforms and Products to the next billion users. Commenting on this, Sajith Sivanandan, Managing Director and Business Head, Google Pay and Next Billion User Initiatives, India, said “Solving for access is one of the core pillars of our Next Billion Users strategy, and with gStation we have developed a best in class public WiFi solution that provides a seamless, high-quality broadband experience to users.” In addition to this, VC Gopalratnam, SVP, IT and CIO International, Cisco India and SAARC, announced that only Cisco is building a multidomain architecture that securely connects any user, on any device, on any network to any application. When asked about the evolving role of CISOs and the CISOs potentially replacing the CIOs in the boardroom discussions, Daisy Chittilapilly, Managing Director, DTO, Cisco India & SAARC, said “Though CISOs are traditionally into compliance and policy work, while the CIOs are the enablers, the synergist relationship between

CISCO: FOLLOWING A PARTNER CENTRIC APPROACH TO SUCCESS From an interaction with B Raghavendran, Managing Director, Partner Organization, Cisco India and SAARC about Cisco’s partner strategies for the SMB market.

By : Pooja Jain Pooja@accentinfomedia.com

t the Cisco India Summit 2019, Cisco leaders emphasised how leveraging the Power of Alliances has allowed it to grow and simultaneously assist its partner organizations in their growth. Cisco’s holistic approach includes providing its partners the global exposure that benefits the organizations in building its market identity, and enhacing their internal efficiency, portfolio and resources through comprehensive training programs. DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION AND CISCO There is a lot of transformation that is taking place. There are market and technology transitions that are happening. Digitization is progressing and Cisco is progressing with it –evolving from products to software and occupying this whole programmability space. The way Cisco has opened up its software, today it has software APIs, right from Security and Datacenters, to Enterprise Networking and Collaboration Platform. This is what additionally gives Cisco’s partners the ability to build solutions and applications on top of it. And by doing so, taking from the power of the underlying software infrastructure that Cisco has developed and delivering value to their customers in turn. It is with a completely different dynamics that Cisco is able to differentiate them from the pack.

24 SME CHANNELS AUGUST 2019

CISCO PRIORITIZING CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE From merely going about selling the technology, Cisco is shifting its partner approach to addressing the question of settling the technology with the life cycle of the technology, so as to ensure that the customer is not just using the technologies that are sold to them but also expanding upon it while simultaneously delivering value from it. The priority now for Cisco, is to create the best customer experience possible. This is what helps the partners to differentiate. Cisco’s aim is to help the partners in creating that differentiation and leveraging it to increase relevance. So that in the long run, they will be able to drive the conversation towards technology differentiation and value based selling. This in turn helps Cisco in terms of acquiring specialized talent by virtue of collaborating with its partner organizations. The transition from Transactional Selling to Value Selling, initiates a process of enablement that upskills the employees. This leads to a holistic growth of the organization. This comes in handy for mid-size partners, who unlike their large-sized counterparts cannot afford to engage in a business consulting exercise on a regular basis. By assisting them through the process of upskilling, Cisco is making an investment that adds to its partners’ capabilities and resources. By sharing with them

the information, tools and the processes that are the crucial aspects of the enablement framework, Cisco provides the partner organizations the right kind of knowledge that they need to upskill their employees. CISCO’S SMB STRATEGIES By taking up smaller partners in the SMB playing field, Cisco is working on its SMB strategies through its partner organizations. Cisco’s end game is to ensure that its partners’ customers get a similar customer experience as they would get if they were directly engaging with Cisco. One of the ways this is being done is by encouraging the SMB partners to invest in a head count that will then be put within Cisco. These ‘trainees’ so to say, would be working within Cisco for a period of one year during which they would be trained with and by the Cisco employees in accordance with the enablement program. At the end of the stipulated period, the trainees would be transferred back into the partner organization they hailed form and with them, the business that they have done while they were with Cisco, would go back to their respective partner organization. After a yearlong training with Cisco, when the employee walks out, s/he will have a nuanced understanding of Cisco’s portfolio and how it can be efficiently utilized. This on-the-job experience for the partners’ employees, is the investment that Cisco is making for the cause of its SMB strategies. Cisco does not stop at investing in programmability or new buying centres for a holistic Transformation. Instead it walks the extra mile and works on the performed space. And this is what has allowed Cisco to lead the market with its partner-centric SMB approach.

CYBERSECURITY TO BE ‘VERY COMPLEX’ WITH AI AND ML It is important to separate the hype from reality before setting expectations for AI and ML-based cybersecurity systems by clearing all the misconceptions about the technology.

Artificial intelligence (AI) and Machine-toMachine (M2M) connectivity are two highly talked-about subjects in the tech community. The applications of these technologies have been explored in every field, from manufacturing and retail to finance and healthcare. And due to the hype surrounding these technologies, business leaders often assume that AI and ML can be used to solve all their problems -- including those associated with cybersecurity. While such an assumption may not be entirely fallacious, business leaders should understand that AI cannot solve all of their cybersecurity woes. At least, not in the present. Thus, it is important to separate the hype from reality before setting expectations for AI and ML-based cybersecurity systems by clearing all the misconceptions about the technology. And the biggest misconception that people have about AI is that it will completely eliminate the need for human cybersecurity personnel from their roles. However, nothing can be further from the truth. AI won’t replace but assist cybersecurity personnel Many companies that have sizeable IT infrastructures and operations are facing a dearth of skilled cybersecurity personnel. The cybersecurity personnel that is employed with these companies spend most of their time fixing emergent cyber threats. They are left with very little time to perform strategic assessment and upgrade of their cybersecurity systems. Thus, these cybersecurity teams are stuck in a reactive cycle, where cyberattacks, leaks, and vulnerabilities keep emerging one after the other, using up the experts’ time in just fixing them. There is little scope for implementing proactive cybersecurity in these situations. The use of AI and ML, which can process large volumes of data rapidly, can help overburdened cybersecurity teams. These AI and ML systems are much more complex than most existing

cybersecurity applications and devices, with in-built capabilities to monitor every node in an enterprise for potentially malicious elements and activities. These systems can detect emerging threats and execute appropriate countermeasures suitable for every instance of risk. These systems can also ‘learn’ from past instances of cyberattacks and improve their responses to future threats as required. The enterprises utilizing such complex AI and ML-based cybersecurity systems can easily stop most emerging cyberattacks without requiring their cybersecurity team to constantly monitor all IT systems. These AI systems can highlight vulnerabilities in the enterprise network to enable the cybersecurity team to fix them promptly. AI’s pattern recognition can aid threat detection AI and ML, while still not as good at independently solving complex problems as humans, are extremely good at picking up and memorizing patterns. They can analyze large sets of data and monitor large numbers of entities to identify hidden patterns that human cybersecurity personnel may not be able to perceive at all. These patterns may include individual user behavior or data access and usage patterns. And after these systems memorize such patterns, they can easily spot anomalies or instances where established patterns are not followed. This helps AI and ML systems in fraud and threat detection. AI’s pattern recognition ability also enables it to predict attacks and stop them before they happen, making it perfect for use in Network Intrusion Prevention Systems (NIPS), Web Application Firewalls (WAF), anti-spam, and anti-malware systems. ML’s pattern recognition capability can help in the detection of botnets by analyzing communication patterns and DNS query information. Machine learning can also greatly enhance anti-malware capabilities by accurately classifying malware applications and isolating or sandboxing them before they cause damage to the.
