HYBRID WORKING?
BY SANJAY sanjay@accentinfomedia.comHybrid Working has become a reality and it is going to stay.
Management finds it very meaningful and apt to adopt this model for a long run
The collective experience of the past two years has left a lasting imprint, fundamentally changing how we define the role of work in our lives.
It has been very different from the earlier years. During the last two years, people have been moving back and forth from their homes and remote locations to offices. Many have permanently shifted to home office and remote offices, and many have been given the option of working from office for few days. So, it has been very challenging for the management from the employee collaboration and productivity point of view.
McKinsey survey says nearly 90 percent of organisations thinking of combining remote and on-site working models as part of their long-term stategy. At the same time, Poly launched a study, Recruit, Retain and Grow, which analyses issues of hybrid work policies, workplace culture, and employee wellness through the lens of over 2,500 global business decision-makers. The insights from the study have been useful for companies that are planning to roll out their hybrid work place strategy.
As per the study, more than 50% of organisa tions in Asia Pacific (APAC), and over 70% of Indian organisations believe that if they don’t address their hybrid work processes and plans, they will start to lose staff and be unable to recruit and retain talent. To be informed that Poly is the only player in the industry that has a collabora tion solution (audio/video) for every workstyle – whether they are working from home, in the office, or anywhere in between.
Sustainable hybrid work strategy is the need
of the hour
Talking about how workplace and employee expectations have changed over the last two years, Ankur Goel, Managing Director for Poly India & SAARC said, “There is no denying that hybrid work is here to stay. Employee expectations from work and workspaces have changed dramatically over the last two years. I have interacted with multiple CIOs over the last few months and have discussed their hybrid work strategies with them. They are worried about questions like, ‘How do I protect my existing investments?’ ‘How do I ensure office kind of experience at home or any where between office & home?, ‘How do I plan my device strategy to meet a multi-cloud environ ment?’. Today, a CIO’s priority is all about nailing their hybrid work strategy and making sure that they have the best collaboration system in place to support a diverse workforce.”
He added, “Rolling out a hybrid working strategy is no longer just an IT discussion. It has become a serious business discussion. The involvement of C-suite executives and HR leaders is needed to truly make hybrid working success ful. Companies that want to thrive in the hybrid world of work need to develop an employee-first approach focused on user experience, and for the CIOs, the collaboration solutions they implement should be easy to use and easy to manage.”
Elaborating on the role that Poly plays in sup porting a hybrid workforce, Ankur added, “Poly has a collaboration solution for every worker - whether users are working from the office, or remotely or anywhere in between, we have the
audio, video, headset, and meeting room solu tion for every work style. Our vision is to ensure that everyone can be part of the conversation, on any platform, from anywhere, with total meeting equality. Our products like the Poly Studio P5 (a professional webcam), Voyager Focus 2 (head set with great ANC features), Poly Studio R30 (USB video bar for small conference spaces) are designed for the hybrid worker, work with mul tiple cloud platforms and provide amazing and seamless user experience”.
Poly and its partner ecosystem in India
Poly has seen immense growth in India – in every segment and sector, especially its headset business, which grew exponentially over the last three years. It has seen good growth in sectors like IT/ITeS, government, and manufacturing. Prin
cipally Poly relies on its set of channel partners for its rout to market. To be fair, Poly has a very strong partner ecosystem in India. Through its set of channel partners, Poly wants to make sure that it delivers equal meeting experience to all users, regardless of location.
One of Poly’s most crucial partners, Beetel Teletech Pvt. Ltd. which has been working with the company for over 15 years.
Speaking on how hybrid working has trans formed workplaces, Sanjeev Chhabra, MD & CEO Beetel Teletech Limited, said, “The onset of the global pandemic has brought a major transformation in the workplace, and business leaders across the world are reconsidering the ways their organisations operate. Corporates and businesses have developed ways to adapt to new technologies, including hybrid working modes
and a myriad of collaboration solutions; these have now become one of the most important aspects of companies’ overall strategies. Hybrid working not only provides flexibility but also has a significant impact on productivity and employee satisfaction. This shift toward new workplaces, styles, work cultures, and hybrid working has emerged as the new normal and will continue to thrive exponentially.”
Talking about Beetel’s and Poly partnership, Sanjeev Chhabra, said, “Our relationship with Poly goes back a very long way, and we are proud to be associated with them. Our growth journey together has been incredible.
We have worked on developing a 360O approach for Poly Products with our channel net work. Poly is growing in all segments and verticals due to its varied portfolio for hybrid workers, and they have even started to rapidly expand their presence in tier 2 and tier 3 cities. We are excited about the opportunities that hybrid working presents and look forward to working closely with Poly over the next few months to help customers navigate the new world of work.”
At the same time, Poly has also engaged with global technology providers to co-create solutions for a wide range of audience. It has been engaged with various hardware, software and collabora tion vendors and leveraged their channel ecosys tem. Now being acquired by HP, the synergistic approach would be multiplied as HP’s strength lies in engaging channel partners which are not only in IT vertical but also AV, imaging, etc.
Ankur said, “We are very excited to be a part of HP, and the combined synergies of Poly and HP offer amazing opportunities for IT & AV partners. Together, we have incredible opportuni ties to innovate at the heart of hybrid work and create amazing new solutions for our customers”.
He added, “Channel partners should be excited as this is a winning combination that will
empower people to work from anywhere, and help customers win in the hybrid world of work.”
In a nutshell, with the set of smart endpoints for unified collaboration Poly successfully offers per sonal and group communication, with a full range of headsets, desk and conference phones, and video collaboration solutions. At the sme time, its cloud software and services provide advanced management, analytics, and the insights that drive first-rate business decisions. The objective is wherever and whenever the customer wants to communicate or collaborate; the company wants to make the experience as genuine as face to face. Bringing the world closer. One to one. One to many. Many to many.
In their efforts to reaching out to the customers in offering the best of the experience, partner eco system is paramount. Poly study says that more and more customers are relying on players to provide seamless communication and collabora tion experiences. Poly solutions drive the last, and most important, mile for customers delivering the richest and most complete set of communication solutions.
“WE ARE VERY EXCITED TO BE A PART OF HP, AND THE COMBINED SYNERGIES OF POLY AND HP OFFER AMAZING OPPORTUNITIES FOR IT & AV PARTNERS.”

spaces and even from coffee shops. We at Accops enable anyone to securely work from anywhere.
When the work is being enabled from any place and working with your own employees and vendors’ employees and customers, it means you expect a mix of managed and unmanaged devices. These unmanaged devices bring a lot of security challenges.
large customer in north India which suffered from an insider threat paid almost US$500000 as remediation.
So, insider threat would remain a major con cern for every organization.
What is the trend in the market from remote work and cyber security perspective?
I will start with the people. The definition of people or workforce itself is not limited to employ ees these days. People are coming from the vendor ecosystem and customer ecosystem. Machines are now becoming part of the network of any organi zation. What we are looking at from the post-pan demic point of view is that the technology strategy has become far more inclusive. What was consid ered ‘nice to have’ from the work-from-anywhere standpoint is ‘a must have’ from an organization’s business continuity charter point of view.”
Having said that, when you accept the new real ity, you must accept the challenges – especially, from a people experience standpoint and from technology execution and sustenance point.”
When we talk about technology execution and sustenance, from the information security point of view, what we are picking up clearly is that with the new normal coming in, there are people coming from the workplace of office, home, co-working
We also see that post-pandemic, the access to an application is no longer limited to the datacenters. A lot of applications are hosted and accessed in the SaaS model. It means folks do not need to come inside the corporate network, they can access these applications from anywhere. It entails added responsibility of offering seamless user experience with the same security principles, which guide the entire organization. From Accops’ standpoint, our simple approach to resolve some of these prob lems is to offer the zero-trust framework.
What is your perception of insider threat?
Insider threat is a major concern these days. We look at insider threats from two dimensions –intended and unintended.
The first one is about a disgruntled employee who wants to damage the organization delib erately. The second one is the skilling issue. The employees who are not skilled enough unknow ingly do damage to the company by leaking information.
In both cases, blunders are happening. Of course, there is a lot of social engineering these days on the employees to reveal credentials. However, the average cost of remediation per insider theft for 2022 was US$ 800,000. A very
We are also seeing external threats, includ ing phishing, ransomware, DDoS attacks, etc., becoming responsible for exploiting internal information.
Our recommendation to deal with these threats is to have the asecurity posture which is right sizing tools and skills.
What are your future recommendations for cyber security?
From Accops’ standpoint, we recommend 5 prin ciples. Our recommendation starts with Desktopas-a-Service (DaaS). The future belongs to DaaS, where the minimum footprint of data is seen at the endpoint. That also comes with an added layer of protection, and it becomes very easy to manage systems cutting across all the layers. It also simpli fies IT admins’ responsibilities. DaaS also contrib utes to securing organizations from risk, which comes from an endpoint.
After DaaS, we recommend customers to embrace a zero-trust access framework. It ensures that the identity security and validation of users are never compromised. Of course, it continues to abide by the AAA framework that are Autho rization, Authentication, and Accounting which. ensures that the users coming into the network with risk cannot affect the corporate network.
Then we look at converged IAM (Identity and Access Management). Accops has defense-indepth multi-layered security approach in our con
With the new regime of hybrid work in place, Accops is all set to become the preferred vendor of business organizations
Accops Systems is one of the leading Makein-India brands that helps businesses enable secure and compliant remote access to business applications from any device and network. verged IAM. We go beyond multi-factor and SSO. Today, we offer biometric authentication, where we have an added element of facial recognition of the users.
The fourth principle is the consolidation of ven dors. It ensures the cost of operation comes down. And the complexity is reduced. So, we believe that the top decision makers’ agenda should have a high priority for vendor consolidation. We at Accops are very relevant to the vendor consolidation prin ciple. Our products’ suite is very integrated as we offer digital workspace having everything – right from VDI to ZTNA to Conversed IAM, etc.
Last but not the least is AI. AI is contribut ing significantly to the economic progress of the world. Machines are becoming more and more part of our daily lives. We have already seen drones

Accops Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Harish Menon added: “Partners are the vital bridge between Accops and our clients. And UTSAH is all about recognizing our partners’ contributions and celebrating our partnership. At Accops, we go beyond sales with our partners, providing them pre-sales support, continual enablement, assistance for setting up their COE, etc., thereby helping clients get a richer experience from their engagement with partners and Accops. Our partners have been our force multipliers, not only in India but in other geos, too. I would like to congratulate all the winners and also take this opportunity to thank all our partners for their trust and support over the last decade.”
becoming part of homeland security in India. So, most of the states today have drones with their police departments. There are going to be more use cases of drones, but there will also be use cases of many other machines trying to make our lives more productive and efficient. So, AI would play a very important role in the future with people and machines co-existing.
What is the value proposition of Accops?
We always look at the problem statement of the customers. Here is an example of one of our clients providing DTH services . We helped this client contact center save to the tune of 60% of opera tional costs by enabling remote work along with a Zero-trust network. So, the first and foremost
thing is that we want to solve customers’ business challenges, and as a part of this, we end up selling them technology.
Secondly, compared to many of our competi tors, who sell point solutions with specialization in one area only, Accops. brings an integrated prod uct suite with VDI to ZTNA to IAM and endpoint devices too, as differentiation. We help customers to reduce complexity within their networks and the cost of operation.
We use a frugal engineering framework to develop our products. Therefore, we can evaluate customers’ requirements rapidly and come up with new products features quickly.
Emerging Threat Actors Scaled
The China-linked threat actor, Mustang Panda, had the most detected threat indicators in Q3, followed by Russian-linked APT29 and Pakistanlinked APT36.
Ransomware Evolved
Phobos, a ransomware sold as a complete kit in the cybercriminal underground, has avoided public reports until now. It accounted for 10% of global detected activity and was the second most used ransomware detected in the US. LockBit continued to be the most detected ransomware globally, generating 22% of detections.
Old Vulnerabilities Continued to Prevail
STARING AT DOUBLED RANSOMWARE ACTIVITY
Years-old vulnerabilities continue to be successful exploitation vectors. Trellix observed Microsoft Equation Editor vulnerabilities comprised by CVE-2017-11882, CVE-2018-0798, and CVE2018-0802 to be the most exploited among mali cious emails received by customers during Q3.
Malicious Use of Cobalt Strike
Trellix saw Cobalt Strike used in 33% of observed global ransomware activity and in 18% of APT detections in Q3. Cobalt Strike, a legitimate thirdparty tool created to emulate attack scenarios to improve security operations, is a favorite tool of attackers who repurpose its capabilities for mali cious intent.
Last month, the world observed the International Cyber security month, which put the spotlights on the cyber security sector. Despite all big plans and buzzes, it seems cyber attackers have refused to be bugged down. In fact, it’s picking up momentum, becoming more intense, more lethal, achieving bigger scale and targeting untouched territories. At this backdrop, Trellix, a leading global cyber security player delivering the future of extended detection and response (XDR), has claimed that the findings from its latest The Threat Report: Fall 2022 prepared by its Advanced Research Center, indicate that Ransomware Activity is doubling in the Transportation and Shipping Industry. The latest report analyzes cybersecurity trends from the third quarter of 2022.
Trellix, which is fast enough to keep up with dynamic threats and intelligent enough to learn from them, enables customers to gain the upper hand in a constantly evolving threatscape. Offer ing a living XDR architecture that adapts at the speed of threat actors and delivers advanced cyber threat intelligence, it’s changing what security means and what it can do, equipping organization with the confidence that comes with being secure.
Threat from Ransomware & Nationstate Backed APT Actors
The report includes evidence of malicious activity linked to ransomware and nation-state backed advanced persistent threat (APT) actors. It exam ines malicious cyberactivity including threats to email, the malicious use of legitimate third-party security tools, and more. The key findings has been stunning and intensely insightful.
U.S. Ransomware Activity Leads the Pack
In the U.S. alone, ransomware activity increased 100% quarter over quarter in transportation and shipping. Globally, transportation was the second most active sector (following telecom). APTs were also detected in transportation more than in any other sector.
Germany Saw the Highest Detections
Not only did Germany generate the most threat detections related to APT actors in Q3 (29% of observed activity), but they also had the most ransomware detections. Ransomware detections rose 32% in Germany in Q3 and generated 27% of global activity.
“So far in 2022, we have seen unremitting activity out of Russia and other state-sponsored groups,” said John Fokker, Head of Threat Intel ligence, Trellix. “This activity is compounded by a rise in politically motivated hacktivism and sustained ransomware attacks on healthcare and education. The need for increased inspection of cyberthreat actors and their methods has never been greater.”
Leveraging proprietary data from Trellix’s sensor network, investigations into nation-state and ransomware activity by the Trellix Advanced Research Center, and open-source intelligence. Telemetry related to detection of threats, The Threat Report: Fall 2022 has been a wakeup call for the industry. The report dubs something as detection when a file, URL, IP-address, suspi cious email, network behavior, or other indica tor is detected and reported via the Trellix XDR platform.
Q3 2022 Global Ransomware Highlights
• Conti officially stopped their operations. Conti’s source code was leaked as well as their chats.
• LockBit remains the top ransomware family.
Trellix Advanced Research Center Details Latest Cyberthreats and indicates Ransomware Activity Doubling in the Transportation and Shipping Industry
“SO FAR IN 2022, WE HAVE SEEN UNREMITTING ACTIVITY OUT OF RUSSIA AND OTHER STATE-SPONSORED GROUPS.”
At the end of Q3 their “builder” was released, and allegedly various groups are already establish ing their own RaaS with it. Phobos ransomware continues to be active and accounts for 10% of our telemetry hits. Their tactic of selling a complete ransomware kit and avoiding large organizations allows them to stay under the radar.
The Global Ransomware stats are based on Trellix’s telemetry (customers logs) correlated with the malicious campaigns collected and ana lyzed by the Threat Intelligence Group: .

Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) are increasingly being used to boost the effi ciency of IT infrastructure management and moni toring. By automating tasks and providing real-time insights, AI and ML can help IT professionals improve the performance of their systems and avoid potential issues.
The potential benefits of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) are well known. The question is how to leverage these technologies to improve IT infrastructure management. In many cases, AI and ML can be used to automate tasks that are currently being done manually. It can free up resources to be used for other tasks. For example, AI can be used to monitor and manage server perfor mance. It can help identify issues before they cause problems. ML can then be used to predict future capacity needs and make recommendations for changes to the infrastructure. In addition, AI and ML can improve the accuracy of monitoring and reporting tools, reducing the number of false posi tives and improving the system's overall efficiency. Finally, AI and ML can be used to create virtual assistants that can help with tasks such as provision ing new servers or troubleshooting issues. It can fur ther improve the efficiency of the IT infrastructure. Overall, AI and ML can have a significant impact on IT infrastructure management. By automating tasks and improving accuracy, these technologies can help to improve operational efficiency. In detail, we will explore the various benefits of incorporating AI/ ML-enabled systems in business.
How Ai/ Ml Can Boost Operations In

How to Benefit from Ai/Ml in Your Enterprise
Move from proactive to predictive AI/ML can help move an organization from a pro active to a predictive state by providing a real-time view of the entire IT environment, detecting issues early, and providing recommendations for reme diation. Additionally, it can also help reduce MTTR and improve SLAs.
Detect Anomalies Which Usually Go Unnoticed
AI/ML platforms use data from multiple IT data sources, including monitoring, logging, and perfor mance data, to detect anomalies. These anomalies are caused by hardware or software failures, con figuration changes, or user errors. AI platforms use ML algorithms to detect anomalies, including clus tering, outlier detection, and time-series analysis. Once an anomaly is detected, the AIOps platform can generate an alert sent to the appropriate IT staff.

RIDING A REAL GROWTH CURVE
Acronis provides an integrated all-in-one data protection and cybersecurity solution – Acronis Cyber Protect unites backup and next-generation, AI-based anti-malware, antivirus, and endpoint protection management in one solution
As October is being celebrated as International Cybersecurity Awareness Month, there’s improved collaboration between government and private industry to raise awareness about digital security and empower everyone to protect their personal data from digital forms of crime.
The month of October is dedicated to creating resources and communications for organizations to talk to their employees and customers about staying safe online. The Cybersecurity Awareness Month reminds us all that there are viable ways to keep our data secure and protected. Sticking to certain security best practices can make a huge dif ference to our data security.
As part of our effort to raise awareness and explore current state of the threat landscape, we had spoken to the leading cloud, cybersecurity and digital transformation solutions provider Acronis.
In a special interaction with SME Channels, Rustom Hiramaneck, General Manager – South Asia at Acronis, reveals his organization’s approach to cybersecurity; the significance Acronis attaches to this Cyber Security Awareness Month, chang ing security scape; opportunities and challenges, his company’s channel strategy, his forecasts for the industry and much more. Edited excerpts…
As a frontline cybersecurity player, how has your company been leveraging this uptick in demand? Acronis has enjoyed tremendous business growth this and last year. In 2021, Acronis’ cloud business in Asia grew by 72% in the number of workloads protected, and by 49% in the number of busi nesses protected. The Acronis channel network consists of more than 50,000 partners, including
over 20,000 service providers, and is expanding rapidly. The Asia-Pacific region (APAC), and India in particular, are seen as a significant growth zone with a booming digital economy. This is driving a powerful demand for effective cyber protection.
Choosing the correct solution from a crowd of solutions is like searching for a needle in a haystack. So, what sort of product differentia tion do you bring to the table?
According to the 2022 Acronis Cyber Protection Week Global Report which surveyed over 6,200 IT managers and end-users, 78 percent of global organizations now juggle as many as 10 different solutions for data protection and security, yet 76 percent of them experience downtime and data loss — a 25 percent increase from last year. Managing security across a patchwork of tools is tiring and becoming less effective. Acronis pro vides an integrated all-in-one data protection and cybersecurity solution – Acronis Cyber Protect unites backup and next-generation, AI-based anti-malware, antivirus, and endpoint protection management in one solution. The integration and automation provide unmatched ease for service providers — reducing complexity while increasing productivity and decreasing operating costs with out sacrificing security.
What key cybersecurity mega trends do you foresee in the security market?
Further consolidation. Security vendors adding more and more functionality under one product roof aiming to be end-to-end security providers. This includes not only new security verticals – for
example, network security in addition to endpoint security, or cloud security but also such areas/mar kets like data protection, user behavior analytics, IoT-related security, and so on.
More and more vendors will develop and push whole security platforms that form security eco systems of partners and customers like Acronis has already done. The platform will allow the addition of necessary security fictionality in place, make specific tasks easier to perform due to auto mation, and quickly react to new emerging threats by minimizing feature delivery or functionality integration time from vendors to partners and customers.
This goes together with the shift to the cloud. There will be more and more cloud-based secu rity. On-premise security products will not die but they losing market share rapidly and will only make sense in some specific enterprises and gov ernmental/military space later.
Cybersecurity more and more will rely on Machine Learning, Artificial intelligence, and big data analytics. AI is already used in security but in rather narrow tasks and this will be expanding. IoT security will become a must as more and more smart cities will emerge that heavily depend on IoT devices. The key thing here is not malware-like threats but more data alteration and compromisa tion risk. So data authenticity proof is another big thing that will be required from security products in the future.
How is your channel strategy aligning with the current market trends?
Our channel strategy is focused on growing the business of our partners and in particular on
growing their cloud services portfolio. Acronis delivers a flexible Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud platform with a stack of plug-n-play integrated cyber security and data protection services on it, which enables partners to provide comprehen sive protection to their customers and effectively cross-sell, adding value and increasing the yield and profitability of their offerings. We offer our partners best of breed Partner Program reward ing them for focus and compliance and at the same time investing financial, technical, and human resources into partners’ growth. We aim to become an external business development unit for our partners, sourcing them with tools, content, and channel analytics as well as our experience and internal knowledge that we collect working with thousands of partners worldwide.
How do you upskill your partner ecosystem to provide a more ebullient security service?
We tailor our approach to reach partners in all areas of their relationship with Acronis, from new prospects to seasoned veterans. Partners
take training when it is convenient for them ondemand, 24/7/365, via our online partner portal, at in-person events such as Cyber Summit being held in Miami, FL November 7-9, 2022, or live via an online webinar led by our world-class delivery team in their local time zone and language. We provide training and onboarding for their techni cal teams, sales professionals, and business deci sion-makers. We also provide individual coaching sessions for partners seeking to gain competitive advantages or onboard faster.
When it comes to selling a prod uct, customer experience weighs over the rest. So, what sort of presales and post-sales services do you offe?
Following the channel strategy the focus is to find, recruit and enable partners that will provide a quality direct service to their customer base. At the pre-sales stage, the partner is taken care of by a sales representative and a solutions engineer. We work with the partner to understand their current business model, customer challenges, and

VIRTUAL REALITY: QUIETLY REVOLUTIONISING CAREER EXPLORATION
As Confucious famously said, “Tell me and I will forget, show me and I may remember; involve me and I will understand”, the centuries old wisdom continues to resonate in myriad ways as the world of education undergoes metamorphic changes. The real purpose of education is to nurture children into responsible, happy, and successful global citizens. As technology sweeps the world in unprecedented ways, it comes as no surprise that it is transforming the leap from education to careers to create a flux of opportunities for young people.
How virtual reality is transforming career navigation
Although virtual reality has been in existence since the 1990s, its uses have been fairly limited, mostly confined to high-tech gaming consoles. With grow ing awareness and far-reaching industrial applica tions, this technology is creating ripples beyond mere entertainment. The scope of virtual reality in applications like training and education, design and prototyping, marketing, travel, therapy, and more is way higher than one can fathom. Its infinite reach lies in the immersive environment it offers, allowing users to feel fully immersed in the virtual world that stimulates all the senses of smell, sound, taste, touch, and sight. In such changing paradigms, career exploration is no longer limited to conventional routes. Navigating the world of virtual reality allows learners to fight some of the biggest challenges that come in the way while choosing a career.
Access to real-world on-the-job experiences
On the path to discovering the right career, it is essential to have an understanding of what actu ally happens in a job, roles and responsibilities, and expectations of employers. Virtual reality allows students to deep dive into a virtual world where they can immerse into the environment of a dream job. Immersive career experience programs powered by VR allow learners to understand what they can expect in a potential profession. The opportunity to access and experience the real world at a young age helps them to gain a previously unseen look into the
world of work, thus enhancing their understand ing of various careers. With the help of VR, young people can gauge their compatibility with particular careers and hone skills which can enhance chances of career success. Employers are increasingly seek ing out candidates who possess the necessary skills to take on workforce challenges along with being productive. VR enables learners to get closely acquainted with the work environment, thus giving them a better grip on workplace-readiness.
Exploring the untapped world of career opportunities
One of the biggest challenges learners accost while choosing a career path, is limited knowledge about the rapidly evolving careers landscape. Getting to know about diverse careers and multitudinous opportunities through VR opens up new vistas of knowledge and awareness. Exploring new age careers in augmented reality paves the way to better understanding of future possibilities besides helping young people to make better and informed career decisions. Experiencing a real environment in a virtual dimension has opened unlimited avenues for exploring lesser known careers. Virtual reality has unlimited potential in preparing students for potential careers and embracing the world of work with amplified clarity.
The benefits of virtual reality are far-encompass ing; it provides access to an active experience rather than receiving passive information, simplifies com plex concepts, boosts creativity, and expands learn ers’ efficacy to gain knowledge. With the advantages of futuristic technologies like VR springing into prominence, the way youngsters perceive and understand concepts, and apply them to their dayto-day challenges has transformed the way students brace for the future. The way VR brings concepts to life and boosts fascination is revolutionising the way youngsters navigate career pathways. Virtual reality has become a game changer in career exploration, from helping youngsters learn about the expanding universe of careers to enabling them experience the work environment closely, thus empowering them to stride confidently into the future.

SECURITY AWARENESS IS THE ROAD TO TAKE
The top initial attack vectors these days happen to be vulnerability execution, phishing, brute-force and stolen credentials
As part of our effort to raise awareness and explore current state of the threat landscape, we had spoken to the leading cybersecurity and digi tal transformation solutions provider Softline. The London-headquartered Softline provides services in Aerospace & Defence, Banking, Capital Mar kets, Communications & Media, Health, Oil & Gas industries. The company connects nearly 1.5 lakh organisations across industry verticals with over 6,000 best-in-class IT vendors, along with its own services and solutions, to allow, facilitate, and accelerate digital transformation for the busi nesses of its customers.
In a special interaction with SME Channels, Vinod Nair, VP of Global Sales, General Man ager for Softline India, reveal his organization’s approach to cybersecurity; the significance Soft line attaches to this Cyber Security Awareness
Month, changing security scape; opportunities and challenges, his forecasts for the industry and much more. Edited excerpts…
How do you see the significance of Cyber Security Awareness Month in line with creating more awareness among individuals and organisations to put cybersecurity on most priority agenda?
I think it’s essential for any organisation to ensure their employees are fully aware of the importance of protecting not only the company’s data and information, but also their own. The root cause of a cybersecurity compromise often comes from poorly-trained employees who don’t know how to identify an attack, or react to it.
This basically means that training and testing for employees are both key aspects of develop ing and implementing the appropriate security measures.
Usually, when you train them, employees are able to identify a cyber threat. When that hap pens, they should always report it immediately to the IT and risk management teams of their organisation. Sometimes is not so easy to know for sure if it is indeed a cyber attack. So, in cases like receiving an email with a suspicious link from someone you know, or a WhatsApp message from a friend asking you to send personal information or money, we recommend to always try to get in touch with those people by calling them or writing
to the email address you already had before.
What are the three major steps/ activities which you would like to advise for a better Cybersecurity journey?
These days, we see that the top initial attack vectors are: vulnerability execution, phishing, brute-force and stolen credentials. Advances on persistent threats and supply chain attacks are now the top threats.
1 A) It is essential to train the company’s employees to understand the role they play in protecting the business. They are often the first entry point for a cyberattack – through a link in an email, a WhatsApp message, a promotion posted on an unsecure online portal, and so on. By con ducting training sessions with people, they under stand the risks, are better prepared to identify a threat, report it to IT, and avoid the attack.
2 B) Another key step is to utilise effective and efficient practices in IT and internal control gov ernance and management, ensuring the surface of an attack is minimised.
3 C) It is the ultimate goal of each and every enterprise to safeguard their assets, and this includes IT assets. Entities need to establish multi layer security barriers, and then manage and oper ate them appropriately to get the desired result. Having the a technology partner to provide the company with the right security solution, imple mentation and maintenance is key to safeguard
the business.
How are you committed to supporting organisations with your cutting-edge security solutions?
We offer a multiple variety of cybersecurity solu tions from different vendors. Every solution
must be the right one for each customer. But we go further than simply selling the solutions to the customer. We work closely with each of our clients to understand their issues, their worries and needs; and also to protect their business’ data, infrastructure, and people. Once we have under stood exactly what their needs are, we offer the
best security solution for them. We also help them to integrate the solution into their existing inter nal systems, and 24/7 support in managing these solutions so that they can be sure they’re protected from any threats.
“IT’S ESSENTIAL FOR ANY ORGANISATION TO ENSURE THEIR EMPLOYEES ARE FULLY AWARE OF THE IMPORTANCE OF PROTECTING NOT ONLY THE COMPANY’S DATA AND INFORMATION, BUT ALSO THEIR OWN.”

RISING THREAT SEVERITY AND VACATION MONTHS
You might be wondering what con nection a vacation can have with a spike in cyber threats and attacks. Well, the latest threat insight from cyber security major Barracuda seems to have validated it. Barracuda, which caters to over 2 lac organizations worldwide, has announced that its threat insight has revealed that between the June and September 2022, the top threats were success ful Microsoft 365 logins from a suspicious coun try, accounting for 40% of attacks from suspicious countries. Followed by communication from the network to a known dangerous IP address (15% of attacks), and brute force user authentication attempts (10%).
Unprecedented Spike
The research shows the severity of the attacks has witnessed a huge spike as 1 out of 5 (96,428) attacks were highly critical and reported between
June to September 2022 as compared to 1 out of 80 (17,500) in January 2022. Experts at Barracuda analysed 4,76,994 threat alarms from June to September out of which 20% amounted to 96,428 were alerted and urged to take remedial actions.
What Tops the Treat Chart
Amongst the top detected threats, successful Microsoft 365 login from a suspicious country is classed as ‘high risk’, which have the potential to cause severe damage and demand immediate action. This attack accounted for 40% of all attacks during the 90-day window. The countries that flag an automatic security alert include Russia, China, Iran, and Nigeria. A successful breach of a Microsoft 365 account offers an intruder potential access to all the connected and integrated assets the target has stored on the platform. Among other things, analysts look for evidence of multi ple-country logins to the same account.
Communication to an IP address to Threat Intelligence and brute force authentication user attempt are classed as ‘medium risk’, which requires mitigation but would not typically lead to substantial impact as a standalone event. The attacks accounted for 15% and 10% respectively, where the former includes any attempt at mali cious communication from a device within the
network to a website or known command-andcontrol server etc., and the brute force authentica tion user attempts are automated attacks trying to penetrate an organization’s defences by simply running as many name/password combinations as they can.
“Cyber attackers target companies and IT security teams during off hours like week ends, overnight, or during a holiday season, such as the summers and festivals”, says Parag Khurana, Country Manager, Barracuda Net works India.
“Businesses should reinforce essential secu rity measures such as enabling multifactor authentication (MFA) across all applications and systems, ensuring all critical systems are backed up, implementing a robust security solution that includes email protection, web application firewall (WAF) and Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) in order to monitor, detect, and respond to cyberthreats,” adds Parag.
Barracuda, which has been enabling business to have secure access to cloud-first, enterprise-grade security solutions that are easy to buy, deploy, and use. protects email, networks, data, and applica tions with innovative solutions that grow and adapt with its customers’ journey.
