MY EXPERIENCE EDITORIAL

MARKET OPPORTUNITY POST COVID SANJAY MOHAPATRA

sanjay@smechannels.com

Dear Friends Post Covid market scenario is going to be very exciting. It appears that India is moving ahead and getting rid of the Covid pandemic. Now of course maintain maximum restrain and control, organizations have started their full-fledged office work and pulled back the old order to 100% work from home and resorted to hybrid work. It has pumped in the demand for technologies. The channel Partners are also seeing the opportunity in a big way. In some of my recent discussions with the partners in various regions, I realized that partners have already seen the signs of the booming market. And many have started booking hefty orders and margins. In this encouraging sign of the market growth, one should not also forget that covid has not yet gone from the surface of the earth. It can bounce back without giving the signals. Therefore, the customers are quite cognizant about it. Their priority of digital, cyber security, automation and cloud computing has taken a strong flight. Partners also need to take cognizant of the same. If one can look at the opportunity order, cyber security is becoming the biggest thing where the customers are thinking to beef up always as their chance of gaining market share is maximum in the post pandemic but what deters their growth is the cyberattacks. So, starting from antivirus to server level security to applications security and anti-spamming, anti-malware, anti-privacy attacks, customers are evaluating and adopting all technologies. So, the partners need to offer innovative solutions which have contribution to the cyber security fencing of the organizations. The second most important opportunity is cloud computing. Partners need to equip with the consulting power to advise the customers on their need and solutions accordingly without giving any cloud computing solutions. There have been a lot of discussion on making the solutions smart and at the same time keeping control on pricing. With the new technologies computing in including HCI, the game of cloud computing is assuming a different dimension. There is always an argument between whether public cloud or private cloud. It has not yet been put to rest and here comes the prowess of the partners from their experience of doing business for a long time. Since the partners are not utilizing their experience into the business evolution, their chance of moving away from the customers is becoming imminent. Digital is of course a journey under which automation is coming. These are the 3rd and 4th opportunity for the partners from the market. Partners need to be highly skillful to be part of these last two points. Here lies the money of course. It is upto the partners how they can see the market.

Gartner Says Global Government IoT Revenue for Endpoint Electronics and Communications to Total $21 Billion in 2022 The worldwide government Internet of Things (IoT) endpoint electronics and communications market will total $21.3 billion in 2022, according to Gartner, Inc. This is a 22% increase from a forecasted total of $17.5 billion in 2021. “Local governments worldwide are increasingly using IoT technology to monitor their infrastructure and assets more effectively and improve citizens’ safety and living environments, including controlling the spread of COVID-19 and checking quarantine compliance,” said Kay Sharpington, senior principal research analyst at Gartner. “In addition, the falling costs of devices are contributing to the financial viability of projects that utilize outdoor surveillance cameras and city asset tracking.” “Over the past year, the role of cameras has expanded into checking for social distancing and mask wearing to manage the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as increased use for contactless parking management,” said Sharpington. “Their adoption will continue to increase at a different pace across regions as data privacy regulations vary across countries. For example, the Chinese government does not have the same restrictions as Western Europe and North America so it will be a key contributor to growth, using cameras that harness advanced image recognition and video analytics techniques.”

Over 40% of IT Decision Makers Believe Their Current Data Architectures Won’t Meet Future Model Inferencing Challenges As companies look to expand their use of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to keep up with the demands of their customers, they are facing hurdles getting these projects to production and ultimately deliver the desired results to their bottom line. In fact, 88% of AI/ML decision-makers expect the use cases that require these technologies to increase in the next one to two years, according to a commissioned study conducted by Forrester Consulting on behalf of Redis Labs. The research looked at the challenges keeping decisionmakers from their desired transformation when deploying ML to create AI applications. The study revealed that companies are developing increasingly more models based on real-time data. Still, more than 40% of respondents believe their current data architectures won’t meet their future model inferencing requirements. CLOUD COMPUTING

There is no doubt that the pandemic has forced Indian organizations to put their digital transformation journey into high gear to address the evolving business needs and the changing landscape. According to a recent study[1], almost 95% of business leaders in India believe that the pandemic has fast-tracked at least some digital transformation programs last year. Moreover, to maintain business continuity, organisations in the country are investing in multiple cloud environments which is featured among the top five technology priorities over the next one to three years. As a result, a hybrid cloud strategy is rapidly becoming the IT strategy of choice largely due to its ability to offer enterprises the best of private and public clouds, along with edge technologies with greater choice and flexibility. However, this hybrid cloud strategy presents an opportunity for businesses to rethink their data protection and resilience approach. It is undeniable that hybrid cloud offers enormous potential as a way to cut costs, increase agility and reduce risk. And, when it comes to resiliency, right decisions on cloud is critical for organisations who want to reduce their overall spending while expanding their ability to respond to opportunities and protect their data. In order to do this, organisations need to look at a hybrid cloud strategy wherein they have the ability to innovate and create an always-on business for their customers in the most efficient way possible. Guiding principles to establish data resilience At Dell Technologies we believe that there is no one size fits all solution, however, there are three broad guiding principles that could enable organisations to establish long-term data resilience for their hybrid cloud strategy: Architecture matters Advocate for scalable and efficient architectures, technologies and products that are built with multi-cloud in mind. Organizations must deploy solutions which provide a full range of hybrid cloud data services that simplify management of applications and data across cloud and on-premises environments to accelerate digital transformation. Along with this, assessing all hybrid cloud infrastructure components is necessary to ensure there are no surprises in the future. Furthermore, leveraging controls such as data encryption, immutability and access controls will help ensure that data is not visible to the cloud provider or an adversary in the network. Lastly, choosing

ESTABLISHING DATA RESILIENCE FOR A HYBRID CLOUD STRATEGY: DELL TECHNOLOGIES capabilities that take advantage of pay-per-consumption services so that infrastructure does not become an expense when it is not in use is also a preferred path for businesses. Develop well-defined data protection policies Companies need to consider local data protection regulations and how those affect the data they collect. Regulatory requirements should be reviewed in the context of storing and protecting data in a hybrid cloud model. Organisations should take actions to ensure resilience in the event of a successful cyber-attack. The ability to get critical systems back in service has the potential to impact an organisation’s customers. Additionally, there is a need to understand that public clouds generally operate under a Shared Responsibility Model, which means that an organisation maintains some responsibilities for their data and workloads, while the cloud provider may also take some responsibility. Data protection and availability is one aspect of the hybrid cloud model that typically falls on the customer to implement and manage. For this reason, it’s important to ensure that the corporate data protection policies extend across the hybrid cloud strategy. It is also good to ensure that the data protection strategy is up to date with the changing technology as well as the regulatory landscape.

Partner with a single data protection vendor According to another survey[2], 83% of the respondents in APJ revealed that they were using solutions from multiple data protection vendors. The challenge that lies here is that these enterprises are likely investing more in time, money and staffing resources to protect their data and applications. Yet their annual data loss and downtime costs are significantly higher than those working with a single data protection vendor. Therefore, while thinking through a data protection plan for a hybrid cloud strategy, CIOs must partner with a single data protection provider that can protect data wherever it resides. To conclude, organizations generally understand that a hybrid cloud strategy has many benefits. Those who adopt the broadest data protection capabilities, develop and follow strong data governance policies, have a single data protection partner across their on-premises/public cloud, and edge environments etc. will be in a position to effectively manage and protect their data and workloads. With the evolving nature of the technology landscape, it is time for businesses to stop reacting and start anticipating.

TECHNOLOGY AND NEW SOFTWARE TO HELP PREVENT GST EVASIONS

AMIT GUPTA, Co-Founder and MD, SAG Infotech Private Limited

In the present era, if fraudsters have techniques and technology for tax evasion and tax fraud then the government has imported ‘Information and Communication Technology’ from Silicon valley to suppress it. If technology can also coexist with bridle on the practice of tax evasion and tax fraud that costs billions of dollars every year to the government exchequer. Be it an integrated tax technology, use of artificial intelligence and so on, India is now technologically more creative and the Government has all technologically aligned weapons to use in a war with tax evasion and more importantly tax fraud. But since last year, India has been aggressively doing homework and preparing a roadmap on integrating tax technology to curb tax fraud and tax evasion. Artificial intelligence, integrated tax technology and so on are being implemented by the government machinery to expand the realms of revenue collections and prevent fraudulent practices. Artificial Intelligence The Delhi Government is planning to implement Artificial intelligence for curbing tax corruption. This model is being followed in many countries, for instance, Denmark. Implementing this model in Delhi is likely to add Rs 300 crore to the government exchequer by plugging the leaks. The Nordic countries in the past have lost 2 billion euros till the aforesaid Artificial Intelligence technology was not followed. Vehicle tracking to curb tax evasion On January 1, 2021, RFID/FASTag was integrated with the e-way bill system. Consequent to the integration of the e-way bill system with FASTag and RFID, GST officials will now be able to track realtime data related to the movement of commercial vehicle on highways. n How technology works Now It is necessary for every transporter to have a radio-frequency identification (RFID) tag attached to his/her vehicle. So, whenever a vehicle passes from the RFID tag reader on the highway, the details that are fed into the device get uploaded on the government portal. Later on, This information was used by tax

authorities to authenticate the supplies made by a GST registered person. n What is the new system? Tax officers can now have access to reports about vehicles that have passed the selected tolls without e-way bills in the past few minutes. Furthermore, tax authorities can view details of any suspicious vehicles. Officers can use these reports to make vigilance more effective. Adding further, officers of the audit and enforcement wing can utilize these reports to identify fraudulent transactions like bill trading, recycling of e-way bills. As per estimates, On average, information of nearly 25 lakh goods vehicle movements from more than 800 tolls are reported on a daily basis to the e-way bill system. Single Window The government is using a single-window for generating e-invoices, e-way bills, and GST returns to bridle any duplication of data in e-invoices and e-way bills. Furthermore, the data from the Invoice Registration portal will also be carried to the GSTR-1 and GSTR-2A / 2B of the vendors. The entire mechanism of transactions that starts with invoice generation and ends at filing GST returns and checking for availability of credits to vendors can now be performed using a single source of data— by integration of the Enterprise Resource Planning with the GST Network that ensures a smoother flow of common data for automated e-invoice, e-way bills, and generation of GST returns. Restricting Tax Credits and Tweaking Electronic permits The government has further tightened the goods and services tax (GST) rules by notifying the Central Goods and Services Tax (Fourteenth Amendment) Rules, 2020 confirming that only genuine companies are registered. Moreover, it has restricted the use of tax credits and tweaked the electronic permits needed for the transportation of goods to curb tax evasion.

5G WILL BRING A DATA TSUNAMI: CAN YOUR DATA MANAGEMENT SYSTEM HANDLE IT? NIKHIL KORGAONKAR, Regional Director, Arcserve India & SAARC

Major carriers around the world are starting to roll out 5G capabilities. Most organizations are looking forward to boosting productivity that will come with 5G’s increased speed and bandwidth. But they’re also wondering how they’ll handle the flood of data that 5G will bring. Indeed, 5G will usher in an era of explosive data growth. That’s because the increased speed and lower latency of 5G will power many next-generation applications, which will mean much higher data use. According to an Ericsson report, the average traffic per smartphone in the India region stands second-highest globally and is projected to grow to around 40GB per month in 2026. And here’s the trillion-dollar question. Where will all that data be stored-and how will it be protected? Just as important, what architectures can organizations create to successfully capture and process the new data and use it to their advantage? New policies are needed With so much more data generated in the 5G era, organizations will need governance policies to determine what data is mission-critical and needs to be saved and protected, versus what data is less important and temporary and can be quickly discarded. Not all data is equal, and companies need a system to decide what data is valuable and what is not. Many companies have no such system. The truth is that traditional data backup and disaster recovery teams tend to err on the side of caution. They operate on the principle that you can’t go wrong by backing up everything. So, they take a one-size-fits-all approach to their data and back up all of it. While this works, sort of, in an environment where organizations generate a linear amount of data because they can manage their storage expenses, it won’t work in the 5G era. A one-size-fits-all policy is not feasible in an environment where the amount of data you need to store and protect increases exponentially. If organizations treat all their data the same, the sheer cost of storing it all will drive some businesses into bankruptcy.

Think about it. What business can afford to allocate an ever-expanding chunk of its budget to data storage alone? It’s just not a sustainable approach from a cost perspective. New data management solutions will help So, what’s the answer? As noted, organizations need to create policies that enable them to store their data in the most price-optimal way. For instance, they can use more expensive tier-one storage for mission-critical data that needs to be accessed frequently and recovered quickly. While for less important data, they can rely on more cost-effective alternatives. The trick is to quickly determine which pieces of data are more important than others. Fortunately, there is a new generation of data management solutions that come packed with intelligence to help you understand which data is worth saving and which is expendable. Based on how frequently you’re going to use the data and how critical it is; you can then decide whether to put it in primary storage or lower-cost secondary storage. By moving to such an intelligent and dynamic data management and protection model, organizations can keep their storage costs under control in the 5G era. What’s more, as companies roll out various use cases for 5G-whether immersive technologies like virtual reality or the real-time monitoring and remote control of connected equipment-they will have the comfort of knowing that their data storage capabilities are up to the task. Companies that act now will win With 5G arriving soon, it’s time for every organization to ask itself whether it is truly ready for the explosion of data that will come with 5G. Those that now use a one-size-fits-all approach to data storage and management are probably not ready. While those companies that use an intelligent, multitier strategy for categorizing and prioritizing their data will be in a good position to unleash the tremendous potential of 5G and gain a critical edge over their competitors in the years ahead.

INTERVIEW

PRAVEEN SAHAI, VP, CHANNELS, ALLIANCES & SERVICE PROVIDER FOR ASIA PACIFIC & JAPAN (APJ), COMMVAULT.

“PARTNERS HAVE BEEN GIVEN THE CHOICE OF ‘PAY-ASYOU-GO’ OPTIONS FOR SOFTWARE LICENSING OR MORE LONG-TERM PURCHASES WITH HIGHER DISCOUNTS.”

WE ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT THE SUCCESS OF OUR CHANNEL PARTNERS What is the market sentiment now with slowdown in covid-19 cases? The market sentiment is showing a positive outlook as we see a decline in covid-19 cases. Looking from the economic perspective, despite contraction last year, global organisations such as OECD have projected India’s economy to expand by 9.9% in the year 2021. This growth is fastest amongst all G20 economies. Moreover, the Indian Government also has taken up several initiatives to revive the economy. If we look at the business side, there has been a huge demand & adoption of digitalisation globally. SMEs are adopting digital faster now than ever. Today, the practice of leveraging the data has gone beyond firm level, as it covers a wide spectrum of healthcare, banking and education at the community and country level. The SaaS industry as a whole is the fastest growing software segment in the world and India is 1.5X faster than global SaaS market. The revenues stand at $3.5B in Fy2020 and growing at 30%. Commvault is also seeing record-breaking business growth both locally and globally, and we have

24 SME CHANNELS JULY 2021

more customers talking to us on how we can help them store, protect, optimise and use their data efficiently. Which are the sectors likely to drive and contribute to your business? The spectrum of industries who rely on Commvault is large. Today, more than 1 00,000 organisations ranging from small to large enterprises, trust Commvault to overcome their data hurdles and grow their business with industry-leading intelligent data services. We offer broadest range of protection of data types and location to our customers present over spectrum of industries such as AU Small Finance Bank in BFSI, Orchid Pharma in healthcare, Sify in technology sector and Apollo Tyres in manufacturing sector. Global trends are reflecting BFSI as the highest adopter of SaaS, followed by retail, healthcare and education. Moreover, the SMEs driven by cybersecurity threats and benefits of SaaS for its scalability, simplicity and consumption models like pay as you use are growing SaaS adopters.

What is the market trend from a BCP perspective as people are scattered? As we look back at 2020, we were faced with a new normal, a new remote workforce, and new challenges. While the world adapted to the global COVID-19 pandemic, we saw organizations rushed to move applications and workloads to the cloud. Cyberattacks have increasingly become sophisticated and government regulators are expecting data governance in accordance with data privacy regulations. From a BCP perspective, we will see investment on data analytics solutions for data audit and compliance with data privacy regulations as companies strengthen their BCP processes from the four walls of their data centers and now on the cloud. No security system is perfect, IT has to contend with a daily mutli-generational data sprawl as data and workloads are generated and moved from on-prem, to the cloud and back again across the company. We expect to see organizations accelerating to put in place business continuity processes and data recovery solutions not just from malicious cyberattacks, but also from natural disasters (like this pandemic) as well. Technologies like Software-as-a-service (SaaS), Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) will continue to be widely adopted into intelligent data management solutions as part of a robust BCP as these digital technologies allows data to be analysed, interpreted, protected and recovered quickly and efficiently, no matter where your data lies. What is your assessment of the channel market growth in 2021? The Channel is a significant layer to Commvault’s go-to-market strategy. We are a partner-ledorganisation and we co-sell with our channel partners. The Channel market growth certainly has a positive outlook and the same will continue post pandemic as more organisations are embracing digitalisation at a faster pace. The data management channel which includes the fast growing SaaS and BaaS partners have helped enterprises continue their business and survive through the global lockdown. Moreover, other factors such as accelerated digitalisation , growth of cloud adoption, and increased remote working will create a huge demand for IT services and SaaS/BaaS remains strong and the channel market will benefit out of this.

ANTHONY SPITERI, SENIOR GLOBAL TECHNOLOGIST, VEEAM

“WHAT VEEAM HAS BEEN ABLE TO DO AS A TECHNOLOGY PLATFORM, IS LOOKING AT WAYS TO IMPROVE OUR APIS, OUR POWERSHELL, OUR AUTOMATION ABILITY, SO THAT OUR CUSTOMERS CAN BETTER LEVERAGE THAT TO AUTOMATE RECOVERY.”

sity for all organizations, and this time because of this pandemic it is accelerating very quickly. What is your observation from Veeam perspective? Shiva: When we talk about COVID-19’s impact in technology, we have seen an acceleration in adoption of Veeam solutions as compared to how it was before. Companies earlier believed that their employees should have access to data and that technology should be company’s primary focus, however as the pandemic continues to impact businesses globally, companies have accelerated their digital transformation on the premise that the pandemic is here to stay and that now they need to grow their business grow.

VEEAM FOCUSSES ON PROTECTING THE OVERLOAD OF DATA The COVID-19 Pandemic has significantly affected the growth of the market, offline as well as online. We try to understand its impact on digital transformation, cybersecurity, data protection through our conversation with Veeam’s Senior Vice President – Asia Pacific and Japan, Shiva Pillay and their Senior Global Technologist, Anthony Spiteri. What is the enterprise technology market trend – specially from India perspective? Shiva: The APJ market is a great place to drive business in the context of companies and their investment strategies. If we look at the APJ market, Veeam is growing 3.5 times the market pace in the APJ region, based on the most data from recent IDC Semi-Annual Software Tracker for Data Replication & Protection 2H’20. This is very significant for India as well. The other trend we can start to see is subscription consumption. A lot of our business in the India region itself is driven by a shift from perpetual traditional models to more subscription-based technologies. With our new innovations in the data protection space, we are heading with a strategy that is aligned to the

Indian market. A market that is rich in innovation and the usage of technology. Anthony: The market has weathered the storm and has come out well. We talked about digital acceleration, which was very prevalent off the back of the pandemic last year. What has been observed is that the technology that is being used has increased business for the company to a great extent. There has been more awareness for certain technologies, but also threats as well. We understand by this that people who are working from home are aware of the ransomware and now more than ever they know that they need to protect their data as it grows.

ybercrime cost the American public more than $4 billion in reported losses over the course of 2020, according to the FBI. To stay ahead of emerging threats, Palo Alto Networks has developed the first virtual next-generation firewall (NGFW) designed to be accelerated by NVIDIA’s BlueField data processing unit (DPU). The DPU accelerates packet filtering and forwarding by offloading traffic from the host processor to dedicated hardware that is separate from the server CPU. The solution delivers the intrusion prevention and advanced security capabilities of Palo Alto Networks’ virtual NGFWs to every server without sacrificing network performance. It also allows network flows that were previously impossible or impractical to inspect by intelli-

gently screening the relevant parts of the flow and offloading the rest to the DPU. This hardware-accelerated software NGFW is a milestone in boosting software firewall performance and maximizing data center security coverage and efficiency by being first to market to be accelerated by a DPU. The recently announced DPU-enabled Palo Alto Networks VM-Series NGFW uses zero trust network security principles. The DPU operates as an intelligent network filter to parse, classify and steer traffic flows with zero ReCPU overhead, which enables the NGFW to support close to 100Gb/s throughput for typical use cases. This is a 5x performance boost versus running the VM-Series firewall on a CPU alone — and up to 150 percent capex savings compared to legacy

hardware. “As enterprises and telcos build cloud-like data centers, they need the agility and automation of the cloud without compromising performance. Together with NVIDIA, we are turbocharging our VM-Series virtual ML-powered NGFWs,” said Muninder Singh Sambi, senior vice president of Products at Palo Alto Networks. “The industryleading NVIDIA BlueField DPU is ideal for cybersecurity solutions operating in cloud-like environments.” The first BlueField-enabled NGFW to market, the VM-Series enables application-aware segmentation, prevents malware, detects new threats and stops data exfiltration with the BlueField DPU offloading the host processor to accelerate packet filtering and forwarding functionality.
