MY EXPERIENCE EDITORIAL

EVERY NEGATIVITY HAS AN OPPORTUNITY SANJAY MOHAPATRA

sanjay@smechannels.com

Dear Friends We are in a state of confusion – whether to maintain WFH or WFO as the cases are growing in numbers but people have started moving out. So, from the outset my submission is - we must live with the situation as there is no concrete datapoint on any of the theories floating thorough the media. But one piece of advice – maintain utmost caution. For myself, I am completely confined to WFH, which is giving me satisfaction mentally and devoting more time in harnessing my creativity and engaging with a larger audience beyond the traditional boundaries. In recent times we have engaged with senior IT leaders in all regions of the world. I can clearly observe there is a visible shift in the market and consumption pattern. We have been talking about the shift in various platforms and when the really comes, the change does not reflect prominently but now things are different. You have to think differently. Do not think that the situation would be normal soon. If it would happen so it would be in a different ways and shape. Imagine, you are not able to speak to someone outside of our home without mask, you have to sanitize your hands every time you touch anything. You avoid meeting anybody and everybody, unless they are known to you. So, Covid-19 has changed everything – including your interpersonal relationships, business relationship, etc. The other thing is its impact on the industry which is continuing to happen negatively. Domestic market is delaying their buying and project execution and international market – specially US and Europe are in bad shape in terms of their own economy. Do you expect that things would be normal? If I say, it is a lie to myself. Now, what next? As we all observe, we have potential to transcend our imaginary and physical boundaries. Virtual business is the new normal and one has to reimaging how to address the opportunity. To my reckoning managed services, cloud services, security services, document services, digital signature, and many more such services are going to drive the market though technology product market would not go away but vibrancy that you used to feel earlier would certainly has dried out. Before I shine off, I must congratulate all the winning partners of SME Channels Covid-19 Superhero Partner Award. I am glad to see your support to the ecosystem and your workforce. I must apprise you that SME Channels Covid-19 Superhero Technology Summit & Awards turned out to be a path breaker. You all supported this initiative. Thank you for that. I must thank all the senior IT leaders and Prof. Triveni Singh, Superintendent of Police- Cyber Crime, IPS Officer, Uttar Police for inspiring talks and making the event a thought leadership platform.

before. One of our key focus being digital transformation and given the current scenario we see it as a necessary journey which will enable companies to chart out the best of business continuity plans. Our focus on sectors like healthcare, online collaboration, education, telecommunication and digital cities will be more now than ever. With the digital economy growing exponentially, Dell Technologies will continue to work towards enabling our customers and partners to achieve their goals. What are the projects Dell is working on with the Government to help under this situation? With an intent to make valuable contribution, we have developed a focused approach to support our societies and communities through various efforts nationwide. Some of the key initiatives undertaken are: • Dell is technology partner to Ministry of Family Health and Welfare (MOHFW) for the Ayushman Bharat Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) program and has developed a technology platform which is being used across 21 states. Studies show that people with NCDs like Hypertension, Diabetes, Heart Disease and Cancer are at higher risk for COVID-19 complications and would benefit from proactive interventions and monitoring. Hence, the Dell team is enhancing the

NCD software system with a module for Covid19 Risk Assessment and monitoring of NCD patients • In collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), Dell has prepared a COVID-19 awareness video for Community Health workers. The video has been translated into 10 regional languages and is available on the Ministry website (link) • Through our partnership with Invest India - a national investment promotion and facilitation agency of NITI Aayog, we are contributing INR 3 crore to provide Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) for healthcare workers • Provided 25,000 N95 Masks to healthcare professionals through Invest India • To help the daily wagers, who have been the worst-hit community in India, due to lockdown, we are focusing on fund-raising efforts to support them with our NGO partner HOPE Foundation. What is your expectation and optimism about COVID19 aftermath? The on-going environmental change is going to open brand new opportunities that none of us have even dreamt of yet. The current situation is bringing us closer and making us innovative. We will witness new innovations, new capabilities and new ways for people to connect with one other and new ways for businesses to collaborate.

We see four acceleration points which will shape the future: • We’ll have a larger remote workforce, expanding talent pools and reducing environmental impact: The remote workforce is here to stay. 451 Research finds approximately 40% of organizations expect expanded work from home policies to remain in place long-term orpermanently. Our own pulse survey among customers validates this view, with up to 40% stating they’ll shift to a more robust work-from-home environment. This results in less people traveling and could have a compelling impact on reducing the carbon footprint. Passenger vehicles account for nearly 30 percent of greenhouse gas emissions. Reduce the amount of traffic and transportation – make a significant change on the environment • Global supply chains will undergo rapid transformation – diverse, resilient and digital: We’ve built incredibly strong global relationships throughout our supply chain over decades. And we’ve been undergoing our own digital makeover that put us in the position to be more agile during one of the greatest moments of uncertainly we’ve ever faced. We’ve got powerful data sets that give us real-time visibility, intelligence and automation across planning and delivery, procurement, manufacturing and warehousing. We can apply predictive analytics to model a variety of outcomes to make smart decisions with speed. This resiliency is core to being able to meet customer needs now and in a post-COVID world. • The 4th industrial revolution will arrive faster and gives us a path to economic recovery: The shift to a remote workforce and the “just stay home” movement have underscored the importance of digital transformation for organizations – to innovate and rapidly put technology to work to create new ways of doing business. Companies that have started optimizing for digital experiences are a step ahead as others grapple with creating the same – or even better, a seamless experience online as they offer in-person. AI and Machine Learning play a big role to glean meaningful business insights from vast amounts of data. • Healthcare and education will transform to have the greatest impact on society if we get it right: Embracing digital transformation means positive changes for healthcare and education, creating the ability to reach everyone to close skills gaps and prepare the workforce of the future. The gaps in the digital divide need to close. Government stimulus can further accelerate the speed at which education and healthcare organizations can digitally transform to serve their communities in new ways. 5G and scalable technology infrastructure can drive these necessary changes.

THE RISING SIGNIFICANCE OF CYBER SECURITY FOR LOGISTICS We all read in the newspapers and the online news portals about the importance of Cyber Security and how Governments and large organizations are being targeted by hackers to mine out crucial data. Even as global businesses are adopting WFH on digital platforms to survive in the face of the current crisis, there have been rising instances of cyber-attacks, which are a reminder of the need for a robust cyber-security network. Certain controls

and Firewalls have already become redundant as they aren’t “on premise” and are creating a cyber security risk unless companies have been agile to incorporate tunnels and VPNs. A report from Symantec Corp. (now part of Broadcom), published in 2019 stated India is the next most cyber attacked country in the world, after the U.S. and China. During the quarter AprilJune 2019, India topped the list of countries most

cyber attacked, according to a report released by Subex. A team at IBM has calculated that the average cost of a data breach in India grew 7.29 % yearover-year to reach INR 128 million from INR 119 million in 2019. The direct costs from cyber security breaches are growing exponentially, and companies – even small ones – are feeling the need to invest in new systems and a more comprehensive

risk management solution. The report also mentioned that among the most commonly targeted sectors in India, were critical infrastructure, BFSI, defence, and manufacturing. A new and surprising entrant to this list is logistics and supply chain networks. The 2017 cyberattack on the Maersk’s computer systems brought chaos and mayhem across the globe causing delays across ports of New York, New Jersey, Los Angeles, Europe’s Rotterdam, and India’s largest container port JNPT. This was the first massive cyber threat to a logistics and supply chain giant and since then, hackers have been actively targeting the sector. While it is reasonable to assume that these bigger businesses may find themselves vulnerable to cyber-attacks, one wouldn’t think that Medium Sized enterprises would be subjected to such cyber-threats. While basic precautions against phishing and malware which come along

as standard with Anti-Virus and Firewalls. SMEs and MSMEs fail to invest in advanced security measures against threats like ransom ware remain vulnerable and unprepared. Data in the Supply Chain spans from tracking of raw materials to delivery of products to the store or customer, customer information, costs related to transactions which also is the differentiator in how some companies succeed. All this information if not protected could lead to the demise of companies if the malicious intent was to understand the “secret sauce” that has created behemoths today. A company is only as strong as its weakest link. With increased digitisation of the logistics and supply chain companies and introduction of advanced technology enabled solutions, from IoT, cloud computing, AI and data analytics for efficient functioning, the sector is increasingly

drawing attention of hackers and potential cyber criminals. The rising significance of logistics as a vital infrastructure for modern global trade and the accelerated adoption of digitization across the network, make this sector the next potential target to cyber-crimes. Even as India strives to become a manufacturing intensive digital economy, ensuring a secure and well protected cyber space is going to be extremely vital for its growth and success. Hopefully the adoption of blockchain and digital secured contracts could help create transparency and safety in the information supply chain but until the time that is a new norm companies need to re-look at their existing infrastructure and invest with the right guidance on solutions.

According to new research by VMware, organizations have benefitted from the use of modern applications to adapt and maintain agility and reliability during the COVID-19 pandemic. The global study, which was conducted in March and April 2020, also reveals improved perceptions of alignment across app developers, IT and business decision makers as they collaborate to help their organizations operate amid the pandemic. Additionally, it captures the traits that the most successful organizations are adopting to better their digital experiences. For years now, businesses have been on a mission to digitally transform themselves and their operations. This year’s global pandemic served as a barometer for the true state of that digital transformation. And the results, according to VMware’s “Successful Digital Transformation: Apps at the

Ready” report are less dire than expected: only 2% of all respondents said digital transformation efforts have not been successful in any way. Key to that success has been technology which provides the foundation for any transformation initiative or app/software development project. Organizations that can modernize the tools at their disposal will see their chances of success increase. “The speed that organizations moved their engagement to digital channels during the pandemic signals the critical importance of modern applications,” said Sumit Dhawan, senior vice president and chief customer experience officer, VMware. “Businesses need to do more than transform capabilities to deliver digital experiences for customers and for employees. Ultimately, it is about cultivating software-minded leadership, driving alignment among app developers, IT and

the business, and adopting strategic technology platforms to thrive.” Three Key Findings from the Research Modern Applications Can Help Organizations Succeed During the Pandemic Modern apps are not only helping organizations operate and maintain their agility and reliability during the pandemic, they are furthering digital transformation efforts too. • The main benefits of modern, cloud-native apps during the pandemic include: o Enabling remote workforces (54%); o Pushing quick updates in response to changing landscape (42%); and, o Maintaining reliable uptime (41%). • According to app developers (app devs) and IT decision makers (ITDMs), modern apps also

provide: o Improved end user experience (46%); o Increased app/software performance (43%); and, o More efficient use of app/software developer time (43%). • Almost all respondents (97%) have seen some success, big or small, from their digital transformation efforts. The top three digital transformation priorities for organizations are: o Increasing business efficiency (48%); o Improving the customer experience (42%); and, o Upgrading existing technology platforms (39%). Pandemic Shifts People’s Mindsets and Perceptions of their Organizations Respondents described their companies, pri-

orities and team working relationships differently before the pandemic than during the pandemic. Alignment between different departments is a crucial driver of success in the best of times. During this pandemic, its importance increases exponentially. • US and UK respondents* were more likely to agree that their company was “on the cutting edge and quick to embrace change” during the pandemic (25%) than they were before it (15%). • There is a marked improvement in how teams characterized their alignment during the pandemic: o App dev and IT teams (increased from 64% with good or excellent alignment pre-pan demic to 70% during); o App dev and business teams (increased from 57% to 67%); and, o IT and business teams (increased from 55% to 67%). • The digital transformation priorities of “reducing costs” and “improving the employee experience” are weighed much more equally during the pandemic (29% and 27% respectively) than before (37% and 20% respectively). Software-Minded Leaders, Modern Tools and Agile Processes Help Improve Digital Experience According to the research, organizations seeking to thrive in this digital world should adopt tech savvy leadership, modern app/software development processes, and modern developer tools to successfully deliver net-new apps and update/

upgrade existing apps into production. • Leaders Matter – 88% of respondents say organizations with software-minded leaders are more successful. • Embrace Developer Processes – 80% of app dev and ITDM respondents agree that embracing developer processes such as test and learn would enable organizations to work more effectively and efficiently. • Modernize Tools – 80% of surveyed app dev and ITDMs say teams must modernize the technologies they use to develop and deploy apps and software for development projects to be more successful. • Develop Differently – 79% of app dev and ITDM respondents agree that organizations will not be able to deliver a best-in-class end user experience without successfully modernizing application/ software development processes. • High performing (HP) organizations, which grow 15%+ per year, do the following better than underperforming (UP) organizations which are experiencing falling annual revenue: o New software/app development projects making it into production on average (73% HP vs. 40% UP); o Average proportion of time in app dev process spent innovating (50% HP vs 39% UP), per app devs and ITDMs; and, o More than half of their dev processes could be considered agile (83% HP vs 24% UP), according to app devs and ITDMs.

SME CHAT

FILIP COTFAS, CHANNEL MANAGER COSOSYS

COSOSYS: WORKING ON STRENGTHENING ITS CHANNEL PARTNER PROGRAM In the current WFH scenario, every technology vendor is supporting the partners and CoSoSys is no different. It has not only added training to its programme but also webinars and other programs too. SME Channels spoke to Filip Cotfas, Channel Manager, CoSoSys to understand the strategy. How is the current status of WFH impacting Businesses? The WFH policy has been challenging all types of businesses. Companies have a harder time to have an overview of employees since they work from their homes. They also need to implement extra security measures, in order to keep their sensitive data safe. How to simplify the current security landscape? Working remotely, especially for organizations with no solid remote work plans in place, will mean that data will become more vulnerable. Tools like Data Loss Prevention (DLP) solutions applied at the endpoint level can support remote compliance through their focus on special categories of data protected by data-protection legislation. How important is DLP in the Covid19 situation? Along with the WFH policy, the number of

security threats is rising, putting business’s data in danger. With a Data Loss Prevention solution in place, companies can monitor and control the transfer and use of personal information remotely, ensuring that it is not sent outside the company or uploaded to unauthorized third party services.

“WITH A DATA LOSS PREVENTION SOLUTION IN PLACE, COMPANIES CAN MONITOR AND CONTROL THE TRANSFER AND USE OF PERSONAL INFORMATION REMOTELY.”

Any specific solutions you have launched for the covid19 situation? During the Covid19 situation, our company kept informing and educating customers and partners on how to deal with the new reality of WFH and remote users.

for the WFH scenario. It included training sessions and webinars with the channel partners on a daily basis.

Brief us on the Channel partner support in given times. How is the customer support during this period? Our company has strengthened its Channel Partner Program, educating all partners with the right guidance to accelerate the adoption of a data protection strategy that works from enterprises

Any message to the partners to build a sustainable business using CoSoSys solution? We are very channel focused in India, seeking to establish an understanding of why DLP solutions are business-relevant and should be a priority, through our channel programs, webinars and training sessions.
