MY EXPERIENCE EDITORIAL

LOCKDOWN AND BUSINESS AS USUAL SANJAY MOHAPATRA

sanjay@smechannels.com

Dear Friends India has gone through a very difficult time due to the second wave of Covid-19 and lockdowns around the country. The market sentiment is not that great in real sense. But the good thing is that business sentiment has not gone down. We can see there is a growing demand of various solutions – specially cyber security and digital technologies. Of course, there is a need in the market seeing the increasing cyber security breaches and criminal activities that the industries should beef up their security practices. At the same time due to the work from home environment the enterprises are making migration of their assets to the cloud and adopting digital applications to engage with their customers and vendors. On the other hand, there is a certain level of discomfort among the partners as the OEMs are reportedly not becoming that lenient to the partners as they used to be during 1st phase of Pandemic during 2020. I know there is a financial challenge for the partners. There is a payment issue from the customers. Projects are getting delayed. Therefore, it is highly needed that the OEMs should be extending their hands to the partners to bring them to the comfort-level. I can personally observe that there is a lot of job changes happening during this time in the enterprise market. At the same time, the IT leaders are openly discussing about their emerging tech requirements. Veeam Data Protection Report 2021 says 96 per cent of organizations will accelerate cloud usage. At the same time 82% of organizations have an availability gap and 56 per cent of data cannot be recovered. It means after cyber security BCP including DC and DR are the next big thing apart from digital technologies. So the partners and the OEMs need to work in coherence with each other to develop market and offer the customers solutions which can lead them to sustain and take the business in the next phase of growth.

HERE cooperates with Siemens Healthineers to enhance supply chain visibility of time-critical, high-value medical equipment

Capgemini commits Rupees 50 Crore to augment Medical Infrastructure in India Capgemini committed Rupees 50 Crore to augment the efforts of the central and state administrations in India towards fighting the second wave of COVID-19. This fund will be used to build COVID care ICU facilities, oxygen generation plants, and other long-term medical infrastructure and provide relief operations. As part of this effort, Capgemini is in discussions with various State government authorities to set up healthcare facilities across those cities where Capgemini has its presence. This contribution will be in addition to the Capgemini CSR statutory fund in India. “India is at the heart of what we do in Capgemini, and the health and safety of our employees and the communities we live in, remains our top priority. This second wave of the COVID pandemic in India has been particularly challenging, and we want to ensure all our support to fight this pandemic and come out stronger. At this critical time, we are committed to accelerate medical assistance in India through the Capgemini Social Response Unit. This fund will help to enhance the efforts of the Central and State authorities in building long-term medical infrastructure in India,” said Aiman Ezzat, CEO of Capgemini.

HERE Technologies, the location data and technology platform, today announced collaboration with Siemens Healthineers, a leading medical technology company, to optimize aspects of logistics and supply chain operations for its Customer Services unit. The Customer Services unit of Siemens Healthineers is responsible for more than one million service parts deliveries per year. The global transportation of service parts, particularly the on-site deliveries, from central warehouses to an installed base of several hundred thousand systems in hospitals and laboratories needs to run smoothly to ensure on-time availability of parts for the Customer Services engineers on site. Delays during the delivery process or parts ending up in the wrong locations lead to additional effort in terms of searching for parts on site or even the risk of a loss of parts. This could mean wasted time or longer service slots for the installation services, resulting in less productivity and additional costs. Therefore, visibility of spare parts along the entire supply chain – both outdoor and indoor - is critical to ensure seamless business operations between the Customer Services unit of Siemens Healthineers and their end customers. “Accurate shipment visibility crucially provides valuable support to healthcare technicians around the world in the tracking and maintenance of time-critical, highvalue medical equipment from warehouses to hospitals.

VIAVI Introduces Fusion JMEP 10 Smart SFP+ Gigabit Ethernet transceiver VIAVI Solutions today introduced Fusion JMEP 10, a smart, small form-factor pluggable (SFP+) Gigabit Ethernet transceiver for network test, turn-up and performance monitoring up to 10 GbE. Part of the VIAVI NITRO lifecycle management platform, the Fusion JMEP 10 addresses the emergence of 10 GbE as the dominant Ethernet bandwidth being used for applications like 5G xHaul, Business Ethernet Services, Distributed Access Architecture (DAA) for Cable or GPON/ XGSPON for Fiber Access Networks. The past year has seen a global reordering of network traffic patterns, and service providers are responding by accelerating their technology evolution, relying on distributed architectures with significantly larger links. For example, 5G requires 10 GbE to the tower compared to 1 GbE for 3G or 4G. Cable networks require 10 GbE links that connect to remote-PHY devices at the edge. Traffic growth and complexity are further driving adoption of virtualized test and monitoring solutions. By actively monitoring and analyzing key performance indicators (KPIs) virtually, operators can maximize network performance and ensure the best possible customer experience, even as they accommodate exponential traffic growth.

Mogi IO – AI based Video Tech SaaS venture Raises Funding from Pentathlon Ventures

ThoughtSpot and Databricks Partner to Deliver the Modern Analytics Cloud for the Data Lakehouse ThoughtSpot, the Modern Analytics Cloud company, today announced a partnership with Databricks to help customers make data and the results from AI and machine learning actionable for every business person with search and AI-driven analytics. The partnership includes the launch of ThoughtSpot for Databricks, giving joint customers the ability to run ThoughtSpot search queries directly on the Databricks Lakehouse, powered by Delta Lake, without the need to move any data. Organizations today have to deliver personalized, custom experiences at every touch point. Doing so requires them to put machine learning, AI, and data in the hands of employees, customers, and partners. The static dashboards that have defined analytics for a decade don’t meet the needs of the majority of nontechnical business people. The complexity to build these dashboards and lack of interactivity requires business people to rely on data professionals for every additional follow up question. This prevents companies from empowering their teams, customers, and partners with actionable insights from these investments.

Mogi IO, Cutting edge, B2B Video tech venture announced that it has raised an undisclosed amount of funding from Pune based, VC Pentathlon Ventures. The capital raised will be used by Mogi to strengthen the product & make it more scale able & robust. Along with this the startup plans to expand its footprint to tap the overseas market. Mogi recently appointed sales partnerships in the Middle East & Singapore region. Speaking of the fund raise, Founder & CEO Vikrant Khanna said “80% of the traffic on the internet is video, and content consumption is booming across all sectors ranging from OTT, Media & Entertainment, Short format Video apps, Education or Health care. However, consumer retention continues to be a challenge for content platforms. From a tech standpoint there are 3 fundamental reasons for this i.e.buffering, poor video quality & the fact that the video delivery workflow is highly complex & fragmented. This leads to sub optimal user experience & churn.”

PARTNER CORNER

WE DID EXTREMELY WELL IN 2020 SO ALSO OUR PARTNERS Amid the Covid Pandemic, our concern is how to keep the business alive and in the series, we spoke to Ganesan Arumugam, Director – Channel Sales, NetApp, NetApp to understand the partner strategy for the company. An Excerpt What is your sense of market sentiment now? All of us are reading a lot about the second wave of COVID in newspapers and various TV channels. It is quite alarming. It is worse than what everybody has anticipated, which has struck the entire country without much notification is a very unfortunate situation. From the business point of view, the entire population is going through a very difficult times, though the government has clamped a selective lockdown. Most of the businesses are functioning as normal with a lot of restrictions. All of our customers that we are interacting have acknowledged that the time has arrived for virtual work and work from home. So it needs the intensity of the IT usage among our customers and the importance of getting into the new applications – it may be VDI where you offer the virtual desktops to the customers. It is about the employees of the customers who can work from home and access the critical applications even from home. That opens up an important question for the customers because once they open the critical application and access the database from remote location what is the level of security they have in their sys-

tems and access terminal. Whether they are able to access their core infra and database with utmost security is the concern for every management and is the critical question for all the customers. We are working with our customers in solving those issues. It opens a Pandora’s box of opportunities for the channel, but what is the sentiment in the channel market? Yes. It is right. During the first outbreak of pandemic, last year, the channel had faced a little of challenge in terms of how they had to managed because they were expecting the business to go down drastically. Their concern was how would they manage their working capital and the cash flow. There were a lot of principles who supported them. The two to three months, during March and April last year, they had redesigned or redeployed their workforces and managed the situation very well. In today’s critical situation, the channel is continuing to work from office and serving the customers. They are the frontline workers for us and even wherever possible visiting the customers and offering services and solving the customers

problems. Therefore, the channel is playing a critical role in this situation. This has also opened up a lot of service opportunities for the partners, which they really captured and monetized. In this process the partners are building or cement relationship with the customers in a much better way. We do not see they are worried about cash flow now. More than 90% of the partners whom I have interacted in the last six months, they have done extremely well in 2020. Even some of my partners are believed to have said that over achieved their targets for the year during the last quarter. What are you doing now to boost the morale of the partners? We are doing a couple of things. Starting from the recruitment, we take the relationship with partner as a marriage. So they have selected us and we have selected them. The second thing is how their team is able to go and sell the solution from NetApp in the market. That’s where the enablement comes into the picture. For last one year, we have scaled up our partners through the virtual training. The partners are also taken it up as a project to

“WE HAVE EXPERIENCED THE CHANGING MIND-SET OF THE CUSTOMERS ABOUT THE DIGITAL CAMPAIGNS AND EVENTS. THEY HAVE STARTED ACCEPTED THE FORMAT AND INCREASINGLY LIKING IT NOW. THEREFORE, WE HAVE NOT BROUGHT DOWN OUR MARKETING SPEND.” upskill their team. They have enabled their team on various technologies and scenarios including VDI solution, digital transformation, and many other areas. We have supported them by opening up our training programs. We have offered them in person training for some high-end technical courses and many through digital or virtual platforms. Apart from training and certifications on various complex technologies, we have also ramped up our sales training for the newly recruited partners. We also have extended our marketing activities with the partners in various digital ways and have yielded excellent result. We have experienced the changing mind-set of the customers about the digital campaigns and events. They have started accepted the format and increasingly liking it now. Therefore, we have not brought down our marketing spend. Last year, we spent the same amount on marketing activities as earmarked by us. So, it had really helped us to reach more customers and support more partners in terms of generating more leads for their business. If I say so: we focused on it and did extremely well in 2020 and will continue

to do the same thing this year too. What is the USP of your channel program? One is: Our partner program is focused in terms of how we can grow the business for our partners by improving their compliance, increasing the top line, bringing in more revenue. We are focused on a set of partners. We call it as an ONTAP managed Partner Program under our Unified Partner Program. We selected only the few partners who are loyal and committed and invested with NetApp. We also reciprocate with investment from our side in terms of the resources alignment including our sales team or joint planning exercise or marketing MDF spend. Our strategy is really how we can grow big with the committed partners, rather than spreading it too thin with hundreds of partners. It has really helped in terms of getting maximum return on capital spent. The second is: Obviously all of us are in business to make profit. The partners are also keen in increasing their margin. We have brought in a lot of rebate programs

for the partners, whether it is for a new sale or for renewal sales. Apart from the transaction model, if they bring us the competitive accounts we have a different rebate program, which is over and above the regular rebate. To motivate the front-end sales team of the partners, we came out with various partners sales rep incentive programs. We are making sure that they’re still motivated and they are able to make a better margin with us. All of us know very well in the beginning of the pandemic last year, the cash flow and working capital become a big issue for the partners. So we came up with an extended credit facility for our distributors who in turn passed that on to the partners. How do you address the ransomware challenges? We are working with various security vendors and ensure that the data we handle comes with inbuilt security.

K BHASKHAR, SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT BIS SEGMENT, CANON INDIA

HERE IS A QUICK GUIDE OF THE MUST-DO’S AND MUST-HAVES TO ENSURE THAT YOUR ‘HYBRID WORKPLACE’ PRODUCTIVITY DOES NOT GET HINDERED: Access to Documents One of the key tasks of a hybrid working environment is having access to documents anytime, and from anywhere. In an office, most of the documents are available in hard copy and we have ready access to them. But accessing those same documents while working from home becomes a challenge. Investment in a secure, serverless solution that enables employees to have ready access to documents is imperative for organizations in the new normal of working from home. Version Control through Smart Solutions Documentation is often the trickiest task. Not only does it require proper recording and maintenance, but there are also multiple stakeholders who review or access them. Amidst constant back and forth through emails, the original copy tends to get lost and occurrence of duplication is high. This can result in inefficiencies and hamper our workflow. To avoid such circumstances, document management system (DMS) is the way to go as it stores everything in a single system/ over the cloud for ease of accessing documents. The only prerequisite – it should allow real-time edits and collaboration. Plus, you want a solution that tracks a document’s entire version history so you can create an audit trail and restore an older version if necessary. Canon’s cloud-based solutions like Therefore Online can help businesses lift their information-management and workflow-automation technology to the cloud and make them accessible to all workers, no matter the location. Another efficient solution is Kofax Power PDF offered by Canon that allows users to create editable PDF forms to collaborate on one PDF and convert multiple files into a single PDF. things to be kept in mind to ensure a seamless setup and disrupted workflow for the enterprises and the employees.

Backup your Data and Stay Safe As we continue to navigate through these tough

times, we need proper storage solutions to help us organise our data in a more efficient manner. With the immense number of documents being produced daily that are clogging up our system, and remote IT teams, there is a dire requirement for efficient storage operations. The storage infrastructure needs to be more flexible, resilient, secure, and cost effective. Cloud-based document management systems are becoming the need of the hour as they involve no investment in infrastructure. Workflow Automation with Ease and Mobility The requirement for workplaces is to adopt quick, reliable, and transformational automation solutions to facilitate ease of hybrid working and increase operational efficiency. E-mailing documents is always an option, but that is tedious, plus it makes searching for documents a nightmare. Hence, a centralized multi-function device is required in offices, which brings advancements that help businesses reduce the steps required to digitise, archive, and retrieve documents in one remarkable line-up. When in office, with Canon’s imageRUNNER DX Series, you can now reduce time-consuming manual work by streamlining document capture and storage workflows with smart automation. The comprehensive line-up shares a consistent, automated scanning experience through Therefore Online cloud-based solutions, enabling seamless collaboration between remote and office workers. With its advanced hardware and innovative software, it safeguards end-to-end workflows and helps modernise business processes. And while working from home, use a portable and compact personal scanner like Canon’s P-208II to digitize key documents. Connection is Key This may sound like a basic requirement, but, is a primary factor to ensure smooth and ongoing work. A simple one, but make sure you have a strong broadband connection. There is nothing more frustrating than being on an important Zoom call, that keeps dropping because of a poor Wi-Fi signal. Video call applications adapt to the connection quality, but they do that at the expense of the video quality. The minimum requirement for effective video calls is 8 Mbps download/ 1.5 Mbps upload, so make sure you have enough bandwidth. If you experience temporary connectivity issues while you are working from home, you can turn your smartphone into a Wi-Fi hotspot as a temporary backup. Do not forget to check with your IT team on VPN connections/ requirements.

Digital is reshaping how business is done. We are at the cusp of a completely new age in global economics, with enterprises, regardless of size and heritage, redefining their activities and their sectors based on digitalization. Organizations are leveraging their digital strength to reshape their own business models and how business is done within and across entire sectors, including automotive/mobility, healthcare, finance, and media. As they become digital, organizations are needing a new interconnection service regime customized for their needs. New and transformative technologies, like IoT, artificial intelligence, and 5G, are accelerating the pace of change in markets around the globe. These disruptive elements will

serve as a “digital interconnection triangle” of future innovation, in turn creating still further interconnection needs at the edge. The heart, hand, and brain of future innovation Interconnection at the edge requires a new way of handling data streams, and a new way of interconnecting players within an ecosystem. The key factors that influence edge interconnection (if you will, the heart, the hand, and the brain of future innovation) are: 5G (the heart): 5G enables the management of a lot of different

frequencies, and also enables the transmission of multiple data streams. Designed primarily for maintaining data from a huge number of sensors, 5G represents the foundation for the future evolution of the Internet of Things. IoT (the hand): IoT represents function in the digital interconnection triangle. In a 5G-enabled environment, it will be possible to connect an enormous number of devices within a physically limited space. This will open the way to digitalizing more and more currently purely mechanical processes. But managing the enormous number of sensors and data streams that will result in the Internet of Things in

in the soil to measure physical conditions) and on the mobile objects (throughout cars – the car itself can be considered as a mobile edge data center – and on autonomous farm machinery or watering/ fertilization systems, for example). From this point, the masses of data that are generated by the given use case need to be intelligently sorted into, among other things: data that needs to be processed locally with extremely low latency to enable rapid response times; data that can be sent to the cloud for processing if the response times are less critical; data that needs to be accessed by specific actors (but not others) in the value chain: and data that will be stored longterm versus data that will be discarded. The list goes on… The complexity of this demands intelligent management of the data streams.

the future will not be possible without the support of artificial intelligence. AI (the brain): AI is essential in this mix in order to create the logic management and maintenance of data streams for innovative use cases and the respective ecosystem involved in the specific environment. This is the only way that the interconnection of millions of sensors in the Internet of Things can be managed efficiently. The solution is intelligently managed software-defined edge interconnection. Each of these factors is dependent on the other two, and it is only when they are interconnected that they can drive digital evolution. The whole is

greater than the sum of the parts. Unlocking new use cases with edge interconnection Use cases that reflect this digital interconnection triangle will be many and various, but current scenarios include connected cars and autonomous vehicles on the one hand, and Agriculture 4.0 on the other. In both of these use cases, there is the need for widescale deployment of 5G masts, including edge computing capabilities (edge data centers), and the associated fiber connectivity to local data centers and regional cloud solutions. For these use cases, IoT devices and sensors are needed both within the landscape (in the road and

Edge interconnection – the next generation interconnection DE-CIX is working on developing a solution based on consideration of this triangle. Softwaredefined Internet Exchanges may well be one of the solutions not only to serve these needs efficiently and fast, but also to enable fast and cost-efficient expansion of the interconnection industry with less dependency on hardware. SD will also both bring more dynamism and encourage greater productivity. IoT is the edge, AI is in the edge, and 5G serves the edge: The software-defined exchange provides the solution to the forthcoming digitalization challenge – namely, the ability to operate and manage the data streams of the future.

LOGMEIN INVESTING IN MAKING POST-SALES SUPPORT HASSLE FREE The second wave of Covid pandemic has definitely handicapped many organizations due to lack of right solution. Rahul Sharma, MD, India & SAARC, LogMeIn explained about his strategy to support such organization from remote work perspective. Excerpts What is your sense on market sentiment? It’s a pretty worrying situation. If you see around you, it has hit more than the first time. In the first outbreak there were a lot of people getting impacted, but there were better recoveries also. People were still trying to figure out what to do this time. So, my hopes and prayers for everybody out there who’s undergoing through this. We hope everybody will be back as safe and sound. On Behalf of LogMeIn are you doing something about it in

terms of supporting your employees, partners or customers? Yeah, absolutely. We are doing our bit in trying to help. For us our employees and their family’s wellbeing is of utmost importance. So, we are trying to see what all we can do in terms of supporting them in making sure that all of our employees around the world are getting better attention, whether it is from a medical standpoint or financial standpoint, etc. So, a lot of our employees are contributing volunteering time and financially and even pulling resources to extend help whatsoever during this

second wave of the pandemic. One of the things that we are discussing, which is not finalized right now, how we can create facility in our facilities in India where we have spacious offices. So that we can convert some of those offices into quarantine zones for the people who need it. We can look at procurement of vaccinations or medical equipment and send out to India. From a pure technology standpoint, what we had done during the first wave of pandemic that we had given a suite of our products for free for the emergency situation of remote work environment. Of course it was for a certain period of time. Now we are restarting that again and this time, we’re not just restricting this offering to our existing customers or channel partners but for other people and organizations who requires that in a business environment. So last time we were giving it to some Not-ForProfit organizations, educational institutions, but we are opening that up to anybody who wants to use it this time around.

INTERVIEW

“WE ARE OFFERING A SUITE OF OUR PRODUCTS AS FREE TO ORGANIZATIONS WHO NEED IT AS EMERGENCY SITUATION OF REMOTE WORK.” There are organizations who need this technology, but we do not know how to get it or where to get it from, but we want to make sure that this time everybody is covered in this. What is your business prediction now? Are you going to change the prediction you have for the target that you have laid out for your team? No, I don’t think I will be changing any predictions around the business. In times like this, our technology becomes even more relevant for use. It only helps us and solidify on our mission that we have to put our technology in the hands of organizations where they can use it to work or get work done from anywhere. We just want to make sure that the availability of the product and the ease of usage and you know, it just seamlessly integrates into a customer’s environment. Any particular strategy that you are planning the channel partners? What we need from our partners is to take our message to their customers in terms of their emergency remote work environment. Here’s a lot of information overloaded. People don’t understand what that really means. But what this essentially translates into is that anybody who is in India who’s trying to get their workforce to start working remotely and is not ready to do that, now he/ she can use any of the LogMeIn technology to do that without being restricted. We’re not concerned about whether there is a

monetary benefit coming out for us right now. We just want to make sure that, the first time around, the companies that were hesitant on getting onto the bandwagon and were impacted by this, seriously, get the benefit. We are expanding into offering all of our products into India. There’s a lot of strategic channel involvement because we can only reach out to some people in India, but we want the messaging to be taken to market by the channel partners. Most of our channel partners in lockdown 1.0, embraced a lot of LogMeIn technology. They are now aware of how they can take the entire operation and start working remotely. Now they can take their experience to their customers as well. Customer care is becoming very bad these days. So how better have you made your customer support engagement? I think that’s a very important factor for anybody who’s looking at using any kind of product. In our customer support efforts, we have made sure that the availability of our customer support is hassle free. We have increased our size of the team. We are working closely with a few of our channel partners for first level of support. So that’s a very big shift in our thought process. We are investing in enabling and training a lot of our channel partner executives to be the first line of information to support our partners and our customers. We want to bring more scale into that, to make sure that the post-sales experience for any of our customers does not dip down because of the nature of what’s happening around the pandemic. You see many of the employees have been relocated remote places, where the network is not that good? Are they able to address those things? I think the best testament for us is to see that happening with our own employees. Our own employees have moved back to their home towns and I’m not talking about tier B, tier C cities, even in the most remote place, in various parts of India that you can find. There are challenges associated with the last mile into an internet connectivity, which is probably the best solutions for those is the availability of the dongles that you may have from any of your service providers. We have tried to figure out how we can make our products a little bit lighter for users as well, so that they don’t increase the load on bandwidth by opening up everything. If you think about GoToMeeting as a platform. There’s a commuter mode on GoToMeeting, which

means if you’re accessing GoToMeeting from your phone, you don’t need to be on camera. You don’t need to have an audio enabled all the time. If it’s required for you to speak, you can unmute yourself and speak. In a nutshell the moment you hit commuter mode, the usage of the bandwidth for internet drops down drastically for product. What is your focus on the smaller cities from channel expansion point of view? Over the last one quarter, we have seen a lot of net new partners being on boarded. These partners have come from smaller cities including Coimbatore, Trivandrum, Nagpur and places like that. So, there is a good influx of partners coming from those smaller cities. LogMeIn has a COE sort of thing in Bangalore. Are you using that for any customization for India specific products or it is global centre? When the operations had started, it started as support to our global centre, but it’s very quickly translating into how a localization of work can happen, not just for India, but also for markets like South East Asia. Every country in South East Asia is unique when it comes to language requirements. It’s unique when it comes to the way the product is being used. Some of the sectors are not doing good for a long time, do you feel the statuesque will remain the same and not going to change anytime soon? Thankfully we have customers which are from small start-ups all the way up to the large enterprises. We have different teams to address these three different spaces, we do not prioritize one over the other. However, our priority clearly is coming out for both short-term and long-term is channels and partnerships. We’ve really invested a lot when it comes to building out our channel and partnership infrastructure, not just in India, starting this year. I’m also handling markets in South East Asia, which means everything from Korea to Myanmar. Our go to market is basically channel first and there are success stories coming out of what we are doing. We have three distributors in India. One is extremely excited about taking up our Sri Lanka market and going with us there.

CYBERSECURITY RISK MANAGEMENT FOR SMALL AND MEDIUMSIZED BUSINESSES

C

ybersecurity threats for small-tomedium sized businesses (SMBs) are real. SMBs are just as likely as larger businesses to be attacked. Yet, many are much less prepared to detect and endure an attack. There is a path forward to significantly improve the risk posture of an organization with good cyber hygiene, a strategic roadmap, and a cybersecurity insurance policy. SMBs face a specific set of challenges and limiting factors when it comes to improving their cybersecurity posture. Their smaller size often makes it difficult to find cybersecurity champions and define a right-sized cybersecurity governance model. Most SMBs do not have a dedicated chief information security officer (CISO) or information security organization to champion cybersecurity efforts. In fact, 35% of SMBs have no one function that determines information security priorities, and 43% of SMBs have no cybersecurity defense plan in place. Small in-house and outsourced IT departments typically have limited expertise on cyber hygiene best practices and cybersecurity program management, and limited capacity for new projects or tools. These IT teams may also have initiatives underway to move infrastructure to the cloud and, with limited cloud security expertise, they are unknowingly opening the door to an entirely new arena for hackers to play in with their advanced cybercriminal tools. 4 APPROACHES FOR IMPROVING YOUR CYBERSECURITY RISK POSTURE Keep in mind that your approach to cybersecurity should be tailored to the size, industry, location, and type of operations specific to your organization, especially as it relates to newly adopted remote working models or investments in cloudbased technologies. To protect your SMB, follow these four steps to start building a cybersecurity

strategy to withstand inevitable cyberattacks such as phishing, business email compromise (BEC), malware, and ransomware. 1. Take stock of your current cybersecurity capabilities and identify any gaps in baseline security requirements with a cybersecurity assessment. Industry standard framework, such as the National Institute of Standards and Technology Cybersecurity Framework (NIST CSF), is a quick and straightforward starting point. 2. Conduct a cyber hygiene review to first focus your cybersecurity programs on key fundamental requirements, before dedicating time and resources to more sophisticated technologies and tools that may not be the right fit to combat the most relevant risks. These baseline requirements should be implemented by all organizations regardless of size or industry to protect against the most common cyber threats using common sense solutions. Start implementing these fundamental cyber hygiene practices: Define and ratify a formal cybersecurity policy; if you process or store personal or sensitive information, develop a privacy policy for handling that data. Focus on: Password complexity and rotation Multi-factor authentication Data classification and encryption Identity and access management Remote access and work-from-home best practices Establish required training and awareness for all employees. Top root causes of data breaches are often due to negligent employees or careless thirdparty partners.3 4 Focus on: Strong password requirements and rotation Phishing and BEC awareness Appropriate use policies Other cyber hygiene best practices (e.g., clean desk policy, data classification and protection,

reporting mechanisms) Take regular backups of critical data and store backups either offsite or in the cloud. Test restoration of backups Consider different scanning or health check solutions to ensure malware does not propagate to backups in the event of an attack 3. Create a strategic roadmap. Once a baseline of best practices has been reviewed and implemented, strategic and longer-term planning can be organized based on the current risk posture and risk appetite. Compose your roadmap with a series of project cards organized by NIST CSF function and prioritized for the short-term (6-12 months) and long-term (12-24 months). Short-term initiatives may include: Define a whitelist of approved software (e.g., anti-virus software) and standardize corporate tools used across the organization (e.g., Dropbox, OneDrive) Define a checklist for third-party security reviews during the pre-contract phase of vendor negotiations (e.g., roles and responsibilities, data security) Document formal recovery plans for critical assets, including recovery time, service-level agreements (SLAs), processes and requirements Long-term initiatives may include: Implement an automated scanning solution to reconcile and update asset inventory for network devices and installed software Implement a formal data classification solution for data and email to keep data privacy top of mind Implement a security information and event management (SIEM) tool designed for SMBs to aggregate and analyze data across platforms, identifying and mitigating threats before they cause damage 4. Purchase a cybersecurity insurance policy.

This fast- growing sector of the insurance industry gives many SMBs peace of mind that they are covered when a cybersecurity incident occurs. Be aware that insurance carriers expect baseline security best practices and require a solid understanding of your cybersecurity policies and how you protect your assets to determine coverage details and premiums. The output of your cybersecurity assessment, as outlined in step one, can be used to purchase a cybersecurity insurance policy. Premiums can vary from a few hundred thousand dollars to $5 million, with the cost of based on: Industry and type of non-public information

(NPI) / personally identifiable information (PII) stored Who has access to your systems and data Network security requirements and policies Conclusion: The Best Defense Is a Good Offense Make it a priority to protect your data for the benefit of your employees and customers and the long-term health of your business. Hackers have no prejudice. These criminals will invade your organization, regardless of its size, prominence, or location, with their sophisticated tools. SMBs are under attack as never before, a trend the pandemic has only accelerated with newly adopted remote work.

It’s no longer an option for SMBs to simply adopt a defensive plan to ward off an anticipated attack. SMBs need to go on the offense by taking stock of their current cybersecurity capabilities, conducting a cyber hygiene review, creating a strategic road map, and investing in a cybersecurity insurance policy. One door left unlocked is enough to result in significant financial losses, many unhappy customers, and headlines that no CEO or investor wants to read.
